A finely crafted work. Starts light and airy with lots of texture. Piston has Style. This is a strong contribution the woodwind quintet repertoire. Amazing how tame his harmonic language sounds now.
Neoclassicists loved the reserved, cool sound of a wind quintet, but in my opinion Piston brings a lot of personality to what could other wise be a dry exercise. His music was always very considered and intellectual, but would still be warm or wry or ruminative or playful, etc. The balance between intellect and emotion is a big part of Piston's appeal.
Agreed. a lot of people only know his books! Of the wind quintet revivalists in the 20th century Piston and Françaix are the ones I come back to the most.
@@baronmeduse Tomasi and Nielsen, perhaps?
@@owenbrown4149 I don't like any of Nielsen's music really.
Where has this been all my life???
This channel has exposed me to so many pieces I’ve never had the pleasure to hear. Thank you!
I love this quintet's sound- does anyone know who they are or how to find out who they are?
Why are the musicians unknown? Can you tell us anything at all about this recording?
The recording I used did not list the musicians, otherwise their names would obviously be included here.
@@GNGianopoulos Does this recording have a title? Any label / catalog number? I'm not trying to be difficult. I sincerely want to know - because it's an excellent recording!
