- Joe introduces us to the American Brabant (aka European Belgian). This breed was developed in central Belgium in the 1700s primarily for warfare, carriage driving and agricultural work. There are low numbers of this breed in the midwest but more in the eastern states, Washington and California. they were once considered endangered and the organization is working to keep the heritage alive. They are in much need of help promoting the breed using any means.

Joe interviews Tim Kesler and Tom Schmdt, Brabant owners and member of the American Brabant Association at the their annual field days in Minnesota.
Footage of a half Belgian/half Brabant and a full Belgian team are featured to show their different body types, leg feathering and coloring.
Tom discusses the difference between cross bred Brabants and purebred. Purebred is lighter and more suited to occasional work and calmer. Cross bred Brabants have a little more "pep" and work better in the field to get work done.Tom uses his horses to cut and bale hay, plowing snow, sleigh and hay rides.

The breed is excellent in the wood for logging. Tom discusses the breed's disposition with two main accolades:
Docile
Accept their surroundings better (not easily scared)
Safer
Accept work more readily.
Better suited for teamsters working alone
Good in public - parades, etc.
Bred as stockier, shorter and therefore better for work unlike modern purebred Belgians and Percheron.
Economical to keep as they convert their feed well. Mostly had with very little, if any, grain needed.

hallo , in 1958 a few farmers in my home town have by a binder(in BelguimEurope), they used till 1974, i was a little boy and work withe horse to guide theme in the fields, when i see this i now that my live is going to end, it wass a good live, every body used horses for farm work, or beuatifull Belgain brave gentle frendly nice horses sweet and strong, tears in my eys when i see this , keep them in good healt please , greets from Belguim sir

I'm not a farmer, but in the '70s I was at a friend's dairy farm near Reese, MI and saw that job 20:25 done with a tractor without a cab... for about 3 seconds.

Trust me :) less music, more talking about the breed‘s current benefits in an agricultural setting or in the show world of horses. The horse of the left seems to have neck pain, ( shot at 15:12 pulling disc cutter in hayfield)

I know Brabanders i have had them. And i know that the horses shown aren't the same breed as the ones i have owned in Belgium. A massive horse and hoofs like plates to match, These "goats" have more in common with a Cheval de Merens than with the cold blooded Brabander. Calling them brabands ( referencing to the Flemish breed) is an insult and i always wonder how long it would be if a Belgian association would be contacted to stop using the reference if they did the same with horse vaguely looking like an american breed
