Hey thanks for answering my comments Tom! It truly is a fascinating game changer for the bbq market. Really cool overview and easily the most thorough one I’ve seen.
Hey Tom, came over from Hobie's Garage BBQ. He's buying fry oil by the case now. Says it's because of you 🤣🤣 Looks like good stuff so I thought I would come check out your channel. That is a really awesome grill. Glad I came by. Looking forward to more. Take care.
You don’t have to hope I enjoyed it. You can know for sure that I enjoyed it. You did a thorough job at this updated and in-depth review. I really find this MB intriguing. Charcoal is one of the two most ancient cooking fuels. The other is wood. Charcoal has been around before written language. Deemed superior to wood because it was lighter and easier to travel with. It does not flame as wood does and provides consistent heat. You know I’ve had a healthy skepticism of wood pellets primarily because they are made of wood. If pellets were made of charred wood dust as charcoal briquettes are I may not have been as skeptical. Of course I realize that wood’s advantage is the flavor imparted to the foods. Therefore small amounts of wood are often added to charcoal for flavor but not as the primary heat source. For off- set users it is very important for them to manage a wood fire keeping the embers glowing and the right color “thin blue smoke” these embers in a stick burner are basically wood becoming charcoal before it is consumed to ashes. So then even the the Off-set users recognize the issues with all wood as the primary heat source. Many of the issues that pellet grill users have complained about, I think it is because un-charred wood is the primary heat source. Anyway, I’ll quit rambling and babbling. Kudos and props to Masterbuilt for recognizing what even our ancestors knew, charcoal is a superior cooking fuel to wood. Then developing a system to control a charcoal fire electronically to approach the ease of use of a pellet grill. I have never joined the pellet fad, however I think I could one day join in the forthcoming gravity-fed-charcoal fad.
Inspired by the burn grate mod, I did the same, with flat Char-Broil stainless steel skewers from Lowes. One thing I notice is that the extra metal keeps larger charcoal from dropping. Good for extending the burn time but it impacts the smoke feature if you drop chunks in the ash bin.
Tom, great review. Now i want to paint my firebox as well lol. Looks beautiful. Anyhow did you notice a better use or longer burn from your fuel once you added the extra grill grates? Looking forward to doing this because i get nice sized lumps of charcoal in ash and im sure that could stay in a while longer.
Hi Tom. You keep your grills so clean. You mention Gel Glass? Can you show the product and a tutorial on how you clean your grill. I think a lot of us would like to see your process. I get my 560 in two days and want to take care of of it as best I can.
Man, I LOVE the way that thing looks with the blue lid. What kind of paint did you use, and have you done many cooks with it since you painted it? I'd be worried about the heat.
I said from the very first video, this is what Weber tried to do with a pellet grill. They are known for charcoal so in my opinion they should have stuck with charcoal. Weber is owned by investment bankers. I think once they set a course to build a pellet grill there was no turning back , Big corporations react to failures very slowly like big government. Thanks Tom for your hard investigative work but I still want to know do you modify your cars like you do with grills.LOL.????
Hey Tom, loved your video, thank you so much for putting the time into this. Love the mods, I was curious (maybe I missed it) but can you tell me or even show me, how you attached the cutting board shelf on the front? It looks bad ass.
Oh, and I would defiantly throw out those silly rubber seals for some nomex seals. I done my Weber kettle lid with a nomex seal, and it makes a WORLD of difference.
Thanks for answering my question. I noticed that the probe plug on the 560 has 1 band and the one from the other cooker had 2 bands makes me wonder if that has something to do with it? I was holding out for the 1050 but after watching this I might just get the 560. Thanks Tom grate video
I’m glad you said sorry Weber. That grill is a train wreck in comparison to this one. You have made my decision for me. I will be getting one. I have a camp chef that works great also. Keep up the great work Tom. Enjoy your videos.
Hi Tom. I just bought one this weekend and completed the burn in and seasoning steps. Man, this thing hold a perfect temp according to the gauge! Like rock solid oven quality... Question for you... do you have any concerns with the amount of heat/smoke leaking out the front of the cook chamber or the middle of the stack?
Thanks for Watching Rob! I havent notices any issues. you could add gasket to the lid easy enough, the back vent is what it is, although I plan on building and installing a weather shield to keep the wind, rain and snow out
Thank Tom. I see yours smokes out of the front the same as mine. Still, the temps hold. I'm watching your son's channel now. Wings, ribs, brisket! Awesome content and making me hungry!
Thanks for Watching David! It was engine paint from Auto Zone, I believe their house brand, Ford engine Blue is the color. Here’s the video for the shelf. ua-cam.com/video/9By8vVs0e_I/v-deo.html
Thanks again Tom ,do you really recommend to buy the charcoal gravity grill knowing that I have a pallet grill (low&slow) and charcoal grill( for searing) ?!
I had the 1050....you are right about not needing to get more smoke. I returned my due to erratic controller and some build quality issues.....Ironically, thesmoke flavor was too much for my taste!
I'm planning on getting the 1050, just in case size matters at the time. Could you do a how to in the nice wood prep shelf you done on the 560. this would be great, and thank you.
Any Idea when they are gonna ship? Do you know if the Home despot is gonna carry them? If not, I gotta make the drive to the closest dealer in the city that has them.
Really Nice Video! Thanks! I am just waiting for the 1050s to ship. I like the size of the 560 but the 1050 is insulated and has the "ceramic paint",etc (I am guessing its some form of powdercoating.) Any idea when they are really gonna ship? I know the factory says June 7. I hope the local Home Depot gets them, If not I gotta make the drive to the city and go to their dealer.
Sorry late to the party but, is the blue a protective coating for transport or did you buy it that way? (I think I saw a later video of yours and it was black? (the grill)
Have you tried the Kingsford charcoal with hickory, mesquite or the other woods? I was going to buy a Masterbuilt smoker but this gravity grill changed my mind lol. Im about to get one of these and was thinking the apple charcoal would be great for smoking fish! I love cooking with the hickory and mesquite in my OG Weber kettle.
I was purchasing my 1st pellet grill smoker , now I’m thinking to go with this gravity fed Master Built , sounds like a great grill .. What do u suggest ? I usually smoke on WSM or Stick Burners
I’ve been kind of disappointed with my new traeger. It doesn’t have nearly as much flavor of charcoal. It’s also a little more maintenance to vaccumm every few cooks.
Tom, Would you recommend putting some type of grid grate on the Charcoal burn grate to keep charcoal from falling thru or do you think the extra wire metal is enough? I noticed when i used mine for the first time some big pieces fell thru.
HI Tom....I'm curious how this unit is holding up after about a year of use. I'm researching what to buy and this looks like something worthy. I'm located in Florida on the gulf coast...salt air does concern me in regards to longevity...any thoughts or advice? Thanks very much for your input and expertise.
Thanks for Watching Randy! Good question! Need to do your research there is a new Gravity Series out there from Char Griller. Here’s the review, got a bunch more video planned, as far as build quality and material, I believe the Char Griller will endure the Florida humidity better. Here’s the review video....ua-cam.com/video/cRfTC2kQppg/v-deo.html
I think you are going to find that yours will last longer than most other folks' because you pay such close attention to cleaning and maintenance on your grills. What was the name of the cleaner you use again please? Thanks for another great video Tom.
How do you stop the charcoal from burning up everything in there when done cooking? If it's all attacked up won't it burn everything? Thx in advance love the videos
Hey Tom! Excellent Video and I kinda agree........It's The Best New Grill going right now! You proved it.... from Low n Slow to Hot n Fast. 👍 I regret not getting one when I had my hands on it. :-( But that's ok.......I've got my toys and plans. ;-) Just one thing about your walk through of this grill......you mentioned that several parts are Stainless. Do me a favor and put a Magnet on those parts. Let me know if it sticks. Oh........if I had this grill I would change the exhaust vent......as I believe You are getting ready to do. :-) Metal On! \m/
I use kamado-style cooker and lump charcoal. My wife says briquettes give a off putting taste. Does this burn clean enough so that the smoking wood flavors the meat? I enjoy your videos and really like the concept of this smoker along with the versatility of it,
Thanks Tom for posting. I was curious what the big deal was all about. You susinctly put it in simple terms with this review. Now, I'm going to put you in a tough spot. You gave great reviews about The Pellet Pro Vertical. If one wants a convenient "set it and forget it" method for only smoking purposes and volume, from a value/investment perspective and you could only buy one, would it be this or the The Pellet Pro Vertical??
Tom,I see this review is 3 years old,I'm thinking on purchasing 500 series, put have read that there seem to be some issues with this unit,do you still have it,and if so,how has it been ,thx Ray
Thanks for watching Ray! I don’t have the 560 anymore but I do have the 1050 and it works very well. I know the guy who got my 560, uses it a couple times per month without issue
Hey Tom!! Recently came across your videos and have been watching this MB gravity series. My question is can one fit a large size brisket on there?!? I tend to get larger briskets (I am in Texas) and even trimmed they can be 18-20 lbs. so I am worried if I go smaller size I may not be able to smoke larger brisket as often.. thanks for your response in advance!
Only thing stopping me from buying this is the firebox will decay from all the heat (seen alot of videos on that issue). The stainless steel mod is like $250 and thats just too expensive for some metal parts.
Hey Tom! Very interested in this grill and I'm thinking this may replace both my 22in Weber and PitBoss 700 - You say "Best BBQ Grill On The Market" how about right out of the box minus the mods? Do you feel waiting a year for the next gen and let them fix the wrongs would be a good idea or just go for it? Thanks!
Thanks for watching Nick! Good question! I don’t know if there will be version 2 although some have told me that some issues where rectified in the first run of the 1080. So if that’s case then maybe waiting might be the way to go
I asked your son what would be the better bang for your buck.. a Weber kettle with a slow and sear or the masterbuilt gravity? What do you think.. great video
Thanks for Watching ! It’s your choice, not sure what you prefer. If it’s me there’s situation where this is better and situations where the kettle and the SNS would be preferred. I prefer to have choice’s as opposed to just one.
Can you reuse leftover unused charcoal? Meaning, let’s say the hopper has lots left in it but you’re finished and you turn it off. Will that big tall chimney stack of charcoal smother itself out? Or does it keep smoldering and go to waste?
Ever think to line the fire box with a stainless steel lining?? Read that the charcoal gets so hot that it can eat away at the firebox, paint, powder coat or whatever is down there.
Somehow my home depot was selling one for $99 and I picked it up. Didn't realize what I got until now. What a steal. I have a wsm and wanted a more convenient smoker so I was like for $99 can't hurt. My wsm hasn't been started since.
looks like a fancy tin grill. great for warm climates, but cant hold heat in cold climates ( unless fuel source is unlimited ). also unless BBQ had lifetime warranty like BGE, it is not cost effective.
Thanks for watching! It double walled so it should do pretty well in colder weather but I’ll find out this winter. Not sure if it’s fair to compare against a Kamado. I have a Visions ceramic and haven’t thought of comparing it. I will however compare against a pellet grill
Been on the fence about getting a pellet grill. Definitely going to pick this up after watching your initial review video and break in videos and after talking to a coworker who owns a 560 also.
Thanks for watching Jason! I should’ve explained that better. The 2 sliding gates are put back in and shuts off the air supply and smolders out the charcoal. Takes about 1.5 to 2.0 hours. Good question!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ thank you so much for answering my question! I am not a huge fan of the pellet smoker. I learned how to smoke the traditional way, offset smoker lump charcoal hours of learning and tending a fire. The pellet smoker has the flame, even though separated by steel, directly under the food. There is a huge difference between a pork shoulder when it is cooked on a pellet smoker and an offset traditional smoker. This right here looks like the convenience of the pellet smoker and the advantage of actual indirect heat. I'm totally in! Your video was awesome
But how is the Customer Service? I returned a unit because the support was horrible. No parts available for months. I would think twice before I bought another product from them.
I bought mine already put together and couldn't get my fan to turn on. I registered it for the warranty and told them of my problem and they responded with ideas. Ended up taking a 30 second video that I sent them via Twitter and they sent me new wires which did fix the problem as it seems that the wire attaching one of the shutoff switches was bad. I'm fairly certain the people who assembled it messed it up when they were putting it together. Tried both Twitter and email, they responded much faster via Twitter but they were helpful and friendly on both.
I got my grill in November 2019 and the paint is starting to come off. Right now its like a quarter size piece of paint that has come off on the front. Not sure if you can help but any ideas on what should I do to the area? I email Masterbuilt very upset because I owned Weber grills and smokers for years and never had an issue.
I need help. I’m looking to buy my first “real” grill. It’s between this and a Pit Boss 820 Pro. I will be learning to smoke meats and all that. Would this be recommended or a pellet grill to learn the curve.
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Thank you. I’ve been trying to figure out how this type of grill works and your video said it best. Most others have long intros with some guy just showing himself sitting and talking in front of the camera. Great job!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ The Cheapness in me hates to run the (Pellet) grill for just one thing. During a big long cook, I (Almost) always fill it up with Chicken pieces, Sausages/Hotdogs , Onion slices, zucchini sliced lengthwise, Asparagus and the likes.

Masterbuilt 1050 w/Fireboard Temp Test ua-cam.com/video/CBM1GAidXAA/v-deo.html By the way, so far you are the only person I have seen recognizing the shortfall on the grate design. Curious on your thought of just cutting expanded wire mesh and letting it sit on top of existing grate?

I tend to get larger briskets (I am in Texas) and even trimmed they can be 18-20 lbs. so I am worried if I go smaller size I may not be able to smoke larger brisket as often.. thanks for your response in advance!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Yup you can fit a large brisket
Only thing stopping me from buying this is the firebox will decay from all the heat (seen alot of videos on that issue). The stainless steel mod is like $250 and thats just too expensive for some metal parts.
Thanks for Watching Tim! I’ve had no issues after 8 months, but you are correct, it is a concern
So if that’s case then maybe waiting might be the way to go
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Thanks Tom!!! I'll be waiting for the 1050 chatter to begin then!
Good question! There a 2 damper knives that pull out for use and are put in to smother out the charcoal. What is left is used on the next cook!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Sweet!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Thank you, fine Sir.
How long do you think that firebox is going to hold up with those high temps?
Thanks for Watching! That’s a good question, hard to tell but I am going to tear that apart and look closer at it in a upcoming video
Great Video
Very informative
Thanks!
How did you get a tray that looks as if it is mounted to the front of the grill? I know the 1050 comes with a fold down stainless steel shelf
Thanks for watching Wayne! I made it...
Here’s the video
ua-cam.com/video/9By8vVs0e_I/v-deo.html
When are you getting the 1050? Notice I didn't ask if, but rather when?? 😜
Thanks for Watching Jack! I’m not sure!
Unless you are smoking a WHOLE bunch on food, I think the 560 would serve every purpose
Can you give more details on how you attached the wood tray?
Thanks for watching Jason! ua-cam.com/video/9By8vVs0e_I/v-deo.html
Hey, how did you get the blue lid? Or did you paint it yourself? Also....will this work with Lump too or only briquette?
Thanks for watching! Works with lump or briquettes! I did paint it
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Nice....love the blue lid that looks awesome!
Thanks!
Got my 1050! Do you think lump or briquettes are better in this grill? For efficiency. Thank u!
Congrats! I think lump is better!
Ever think to line the fire box with a stainless steel lining?? Read that the charcoal gets so hot that it can eat away at the firebox, paint, powder coat or whatever is down there.
Thanks for watching! I’ve got something in the works...
Tom Horsman great. Good idea. Anything happen, let us know. May steer me in the Masterbuilt direction.
Keep on watching and you’ll see!
Somehow my home depot was selling one for $99 and I picked it up. Didn't realize what I got until now. What a steal. I have a wsm and wanted a more convenient smoker so I was like for $99 can't hurt. My wsm hasn't been started since.
Thanks for Watching! Wow! What a deal! Congrats!
Great review as usual. Could the 1050 be even better?
Thanks for Watching! It’s larger but most everything else is similar
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Do you think the vent on the 1050 is better, or not much of a worthwhile difference?
Could you use wood instead of briskettes?
Thanks for Watching ! Lump charcoal can be used and you can mix in wood chunks
Does it have a Rotissire? Have you tried pizza on this?
Thanks for watching, they haven’t released the rotisserie yet. Here’s the pizza video. ua-cam.com/video/MDGD1Tby7O8/v-deo.html
looks like a fancy tin grill. great for warm climates, but cant hold heat in cold climates ( unless fuel source is unlimited ). also unless BBQ had lifetime warranty like BGE, it is not cost effective.
Thanks for watching! It double walled so it should do pretty well in colder weather but I’ll find out this winter. Not sure if it’s fair to compare against a Kamado. I have a Visions ceramic and haven’t thought of comparing it. I will however compare against a pellet grill
Awesome video.
Thanks Erik! I appreciate you Watching!
Been on the fence about getting a pellet grill. Definitely going to pick this up after watching your initial review video and break in videos and after talking to a coworker who owns a 560 also.
If you fill the chamber with charcoal and don't use it all, what's the process? Will the fire go out do you have to empty it we etc?
Thanks for Watching Fred! I haven’t had to deal with their customer service yet. Hopefully I have a better experience than you
I bought mine already put together and couldn't get my fan to turn on.
Can you refill the charcoal hopper mid cook for 16 hr brisket cooks?
Thanks for Watching! Good question Bud! Yes you can at anytime.
Any info on how you did the front shelf?
Thanks for Watching! Here you go! ua-cam.com/video/9By8vVs0e_I/v-deo.html
Are you able to use Mesquite instead of charcoal
Thanks for Watching! You can use Mesquite chunks mixed in with the charcoal or lump
Thanks for watching. MB doesn’t return my calls or emails either. They’ve blamed it on the virus. Sand and repaint is the only advise I have for you
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ sounds good thanks
I’m a month behind, but what type of paint/process did you use?
ua-cam.com/video/K8h1lwEOpXo/v-deo.html Thanks for Watching, Thats the video
Tom you’re awesome. Thanks for the quick response and easy to follow instructions. A true Pioneer.
I hear complaints about the temperature of the themonitor is off.
Thanks for watching! I’ve heard the same complaints, but mine is pretty accurate, plus or minus 5-10 degrees which in my book is acceptable
Does the burn grate mod keep the charcoal lasting longer?
Thanks for Watching! Not sure if it burns longer but it keeps chunks and pieces from falling through
What video shows how you installed shelf?
Thanks for watching! Here you go ua-cam.com/video/9By8vVs0e_I/v-deo.html
I need help. I’m looking to buy my first “real” grill. It’s between this and a Pit Boss 820 Pro. I will be learning to smoke meats and all that. Would this be recommended or a pellet grill to learn the curve.
Thanks for Watching! Yes this would be perfect for you! It does low and slow and hot and fast
If you want a real grill, this isn't it. No "real" grill has a computer on it. Get a Kamado style grill.
Did you paint the lid blue?
Thanks for watching! Yes!
Can you use hickory wood only
I haven’t tried all wood yet, but have mixed it in with the charcoal, Thanks for Watching!
How did you get a blue gravity series grill?
Thanks for watching! Here’s the video, please subscribe. ua-cam.com/video/K8h1lwEOpXo/v-deo.html
Tom Horsman thanks for the reply. Looking forward to doing this process myself
I love mine so far!
Me too! Thanks for watching!
I would use the same gaskets they use on the kamado grills
Thanks for Watching and for the tip!
does it take a whole bag to cook every time or can you turn it off and ues the rest later to cook?
Thanks for Watching! Nope when you are done cooking you put the blades back in and it smothers the charcoal. Good question!
Need a grill/griddle combo!
Thanks for Watching! I have one
That is an amazing grill but I prefer something a lot more simple and easier to take camping or to parties like the tailgater.
Thanks for Watching Norman! Good Point!
Correction the stem is 3 inches but it should be about 2.5 like the oem from masterbuilt.
Thanks for watching and for the info!
Good video 0:25
Thanks for Watching David!
I like to put ‘taters on those upper grates and use the leftovers for home fries.🥔
Awesome idea! Thanks for Watching!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Thank you. I’ve been trying to figure out how this type of grill works and your video said it best. Most others have long intros with some guy just showing himself sitting and talking in front of the camera. Great job!
Thank you!
Sounds awesome!
Is it really made in the USA?
Thanks for Watching Roger! I dont think so..
Hey Tom, thought I would share this vid from BBQ Beer Bros regarding temp profile on a 1050.

By the way, so far you are the only person I have seen recognizing the shortfall on the grate design. Curious on your thought of just cutting expanded wire mesh and letting it sit on top of existing grate?
Thanks for Watching Robert! Yup the expanded metal would definitely work
