Car kneeled and the brake rotor hit the ground when the scissor jack fell over sideways. Luckily I only almost lost my toe and didn't actually lose it.

Also three leg stands aren’t as stable as four, the single leg needs to be on the outside with two on the inside of the load. It’s interesting and fun to watch destructive testing.

No… That is a Jack, NOT a support! Use it to change a tire if it’s your only option. Always put some blocks of wood or even the wheels from the car, stacked two high, preferably. Placed right, those things can save your LIFE! I put a front brake caliper on my 2500 using just an aluminum 3 ton Jack, but would have preferred a real frame lift like a heavy truck shop would use, or at least some better stands or random junk, like welded steel rims or railroad ties to stack it up on. The one thing I did right was to have my trusty ODF ply board under the jack and to not be too far underneath if something had went wrong. If you are using a scissor jack to do a risky brake job, at least slide the tire under the frame to keep the car from crushing you if it slips!

Brand Name made not assembled in the USA fail down the "pawl & gear" designs.
As an example of poor design, Harbor Freight had to recall a Made-in-China "pawl & gear" designed product here in the USA which you will find online. As I recall, the "pawl" design failed when used under a less than specified load limit.
Harbor Freight for the 1st time has established a quality-control group at the corporate level. Well maybe we might see better quality. Chinese & Asian manufacturers in general have the potential to produce good quality products. Japanese companies like Toyota autos have excellent quality. I'm looking for Toyota Minivan It has a higher cost used but it's worth the extra cost.
I own a set of 2-ton Sears Craftsman Jack Stands and a 5-ton set, both sets were bought in 1974(!!), & made in the USA. Used as specified, they have never failed. I also keep in my auto & use a 1.25 cm (1/2 inch) x 60 cm (24 inch) x 60 cm (24 inch) plywood sheet as a base. This UA-cam review touch's on a few product issues, ua-cam.com/video/Tp0sZ5fte2w/v-deo.html
I also keep a 3-ton 50 cm (20 inches) lift floor jack in my trunk "just-in-case". Some may believe that's over the top. Its been used 3-times away from the shop.
i always have both jack stands & the floor jack under the car together just-in-case for added safety.

Getting trapped under a car seems like a bad time, make sure your jack, and jack stands are secure, block your tires, even toss the tire under the wheel, im a amateur others would know more, but be as safe as possible, place jack stands on plywood so its evenly distributed. they don't sink into the dirt. The pawl, therefore, transfers the load directly into the pivot pin and through the pin to the vertical tube. Wow....I have both styles. I have switched to the yellow one over the last 25, for the 4 legs over three and the top and bottom contact points don't roll over. Plus the more height adjustment spots. The folding black 3 leg was impressive, it has flat base on the bottom, and the folding legs would make it great to leave in the car. I found that on some of my older 4 legs, the box around the wedge finger, on top, had weak welds, and the box popped out. Which happens to be exactly opposite to where the lever pin passes thru the frame, and the hole elongated. I'll be reinforcing that point ASAP. Glad I watched this, on a whim!

Both are up to the job of holding what they say they will but I'd rather have the yellow in the garage with its 4 legs which gives more stability. The folding one would be great to have in your trunk if something happens on/ off road.

Both stands exhibit small, correctable flaws. The yellow stand has an obvious weakness where the pin passes through the frame. Could easily be improved by reinforcing the holes. The black stand looks really good, however the wings fold early. In a few, very specific, cases this might allow the load to slide off the stand before breaking weight is achieved. Again, could easily be improved. Overall, though, both are excellent performers. I'm not overly fond of the ratchet design but the base is a more substantial four leg configuration (against the three of the black stand). For stability reasons I would probably choose the yellow stand.

By welding a ring support around that hole where the adjustment pin goes into I bet would double the strength of that whole jackstand. The black 3 leg type are fine a lot of the time, but as others mention, especially if vehicle up on 2 or 4 of them, are not very stable, compared to using the yellow 4 leg type.(and feel sure my ones would give in much sooner on your press, (also like yours, the tops flattened really easily when first heavy loaded)
As both exceed load ratings, i prefer the more stable type, used up to sensible loads, and so recently got a pair of the 10 ton ones as well (blue base yellow post), but may add some reinforcing to the smaller set, now i have seen what gives way first. It's interesting to see the ratchet type fail that way. I have a set of 3 ton ratchet ones I use at least weekly. I usually back them up with the twist head style ones as well. I think this video shows you where the failure point will likely be. I'm going to start inspecting the holes the pin goes through for signs of expansion whenever I use them.
One thing I want to point out though. In these tests, the load is suspended from above. It presses, but does not sit on the stand. If your car breaks one of these stands, it won't be the same. As soon as a part fails and gives way on the press, the pressure releases until the press can move down to where the stand is now, and the rate of failure is slow. Not so with a car. Gravity will make the result very different.

They were NOT old decaying logs either. My neighbor always had fresh cut logs he would eventually cut up and burn. I would borrow some until I found some that I kept from a tree that had been cut down locally. The price was GREAT, free, and they're better than any jack stands. A LOT of car jackstands and floor jacks sold at retail are all manufactured by a handful of factories in China. They are then painted according to the customer. So the only difference between dozens of different brands is the color, stickers, and warranty.
What happened with the 3-ton and six ton stands was that the manufacturing production equipment was worn out and some stands failed the load test. Harbor freight recalled them a while back. Now, AutoZone and Walmart are issuing a safety recall on the much more widespread 2-ton stands that are used by most car DIYers.
