I felt compelled to watch this and it brought back bad memories of my own escape from a monster. My friend Kim and I (7&8) decided to climb a fence and take a look at an old mans exotic bird aviary. He caught us and locked us in his house. He told us that he was going to tell our parents and call the police and that we would go to jail. He told us how our parents wouldn't love us anymore. He gave us an ultimatum which seemed the only way out was for us to strip and well he went a lot further fully molesting us. He let us go when we cried and screamed. We ran for our lives half naked. Kim wanted me to go back and get our clothes and I said I'm never going there again. I think we both snuck home and changed. We never told our parents about it but it brought back the memories. He was considered to be a very nice man and unfortunately friends with my parents who always invited him over to our house for meals. I used to hide in my room, my folks used to say how unkind I was. I should have told them but quite frankly I doubt that they would have believed me. That was in the early 70s. The only good thing is that he is dead now.
As a 6-year old (in 1954) a young man stepped out of his garden gate as my friend and I were cycling past on our tricycles and asked us if we wanted some sweets. I said Yes but my friend disappeared. He took me into the outside toilet at the bottom of his garden and closed the door. It was very dark so he said he'd get his matches out of his pocket so he could find the sweets. He put something in my hand and asked me to hold it while he found his matches. It was soft and warm and he started jumping up and down and I could hear the matches rattling in his pocket. Then the thing in my hand started to get bigger and hard ... and I got really scared and started screaming as loud as I could. He opened the door, pushed me out into the garden and I opened the gate, jumped onto my trike and pedalled home as fast as my little legs would carry me. I never told my parents (a) because I was told never to speak to strangers and (b) I didn't really understand what had happened -- I just knew that I'd never been so frightened in all my short life.
After reading the comments here, I think it's important to say, that the worst crime is that the "town" allowed this to happen. It's not hard to believe in light of today's backward society, Yes, backward. Why don't we protect our children? The threat is much greater now.

As a 70's baby, It's incredible to witness the antiquated views, ideas and resolutions as it relates to molestation. One fact I made sure to do is to speak with your children openly about everything, and parents validate their thoughts!

A brilliant film. Child abuse should be taken seriously and it is so important that children should be able to talk openly about this with their parents. Someone exposed himself several times to my sister whilst she was walking to school. She told me about this years later, but she never told my parents.

Not my kind of film story. For film fans, I did notice though a few English accents. Hammer production at Bray studios UK. The end sequence looks like Black Park with the small lake, near Pinewood studios Buckinghamshire.
Not true, sometimes they fantasise or lie to get themselves out of trouble. Which is why a responsible adult should report and get proper help/counselling for the victim .

The Carter family are new immigrants in this story. All the other characters appear to be stable Canadians. The power imbalance in local affairs is something I've often seen shown in American films and occasionally in historical British films (set in earlier reigns than the monarch cited here as QE2).
If the person is important, well connected ,money and power then yes ,everyone will be afraid to say anything to not upset them. Thus is how the world works .

Seriously they should get the people that made these comments and make a movie this movie sucks period
WoW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Movie!....but my how people were so backward thinking back then.... I am glad we have come along way, and protect our children much smarter today.
I just wanted to see comments concerning did you like it, was/is it a good movie ?? I don’t want to know your personal life. Really why would you want to put that out there ??? GeeWiz
Although I think that parents were very brave, they weren’t smart at all! I didn’t finish watching but let’s see how it’s gonna end.
Not my kind of film story.
For film fans,
I did notice though a few English accents.
Hammer production at Bray studios UK.
The end sequence looks like Black Park with the small lake, near Pinewood studios Buckinghamshire.
Always remember kids dont tell lies up to an age
@@claireboulton8725 I wish that were true, but it's not. Grandmother of a young child.
Not true, sometimes they fantasise or lie to get themselves out of trouble.
Which is why a responsible adult should report and get proper help/counselling for the victim .
This was the 1950s? Everyone so stiff and formal.
@@joyceanthony-huff2914 It's called "being civilized".....lol.
England. The grandmother especially was a pill.
Pero los niños se trauman cuando los padres les dicen que no confíen en ninguna persona extraña,,y no todos son predador..hay gente que más bien protegen a los demás..Talvez es mejor cuidar bien de los niños sin traumas.
The British always took more risks in film-making.
The Carter family are new immigrants in this story. All the other characters appear to be stable Canadians. The power imbalance in local affairs is something I've often seen shown in American films and occasionally in historical British films (set in earlier reigns than the monarch cited here as QE2).
Biden family?
Do you think that people, even entire towns would be aware of one person's deviant behavior and cover it up???
@sarahjeannepeterson5536 yes, these things did happen and continue to do so, sadly
How many people were very aware of the convicted felons predatory behaviour and still voted for him ? !
If the person is important, well connected ,money and power then yes ,everyone will be afraid to say anything to not upset them. Thus is how the world works .
@@verucasalt9182Thank you very much for your reply to my actual question. I appreciate it. Although it is disheartening to learn that this kind of thing still happens. I'm wishing all the best to you in this new year! 🎉😊

A rather silly ending!
I'm astounded by your remark.
@@urutherford Fair enough!
@sarahjeannepeterson5536 So you think that an old man who was able to hide his tendencies over such a long time suddenly moving around like a mad ghoul is a likely scenario?
@@AndyMangelehe didn't hide his behavior. It seemed that the whole town knew about him. One of the women of the town was happy the police were being involved. She said something like it's about time! He was not hiding his behavior or his tendencies. His son and the town did
@sarahjeannepeterson5536 So the whole scenario seemed plausible to you?
