It’s worth noting that Pure RAW converts RAW files to an RGB variant of the DNG format. This is significant because the resulting DNG file will be at least triple the size of the original RAW file.
Thanks Joseph, I purchased it a few weeks ago to use mostly with my DJI Mavic 2 Pro drones, the lens correction is so much better than the LR version. My only complaint is the over sharpening. Tree branches, leaves etc are now 'crunchy', attempts in LR to soften the worst parts are ok, but still not right. The product need a sharpening slider. A photo last week over vineyard at sunrise just above the fog layer, the fog has been processed and appears way to sharp. The noise removal in the vary dark areas is amazing. I'm in two minds about the product. I want the noise reduction and lens correction, not the amount of sharpness, maybe 50%.
In your description you make it seem like you will show how it works in Capture One, however you do not actually use Capture One as an example. I specifically wanted to see if this program works with C1. I did really enjoy learning everything you did show and explain! It was a very informative video. Thank you!
I tried this on a couple of my images and it was pure magic! It works so good that I will be underexposing a bit from now on cause when I push the exposure, shadows, and blacks it looks amazing! HSL performs great as well. This tool alone takes my set up to a whole new level! Even if you shot an image in base ISO I’d recommend processing the image through this software, it allows you to push the dynamics of your image like nothing you’ve seen before from your set up. The other camera set up I’ve seen do this seamlessly and flawlessly is a large format camera. I’m blown away… great job DXO.

Thank you for the explanation. As a Nikon Z9 shooter I am irritated that DXO Photo Lab does not yet support this camera but Pure Raw 2 does. I did not like the 1 button solution that pure raw seems to be at first glance - however saving the output as a DNG gets around this. The drag and drop method and export back to LRC is a surprise and welcome.
I see some people struggling with the drag and drop in windows, what I have done instead with the same result is I have created an export preset that exports the original RAW file into the same folder as it already is and then in at the bottom "Post-Processing" browse to the Dxo Pure Raw EXE file, in my case "C:\Program Files\DxO\DxO PureRAW\PureRawv1.exe". I actually prefer this way to the drag and drop as I'm a big right-click fan after many years of windows use. The only drawback is that it duplicates the original RAW file, if that is a problem, just delete it after the roundtrip to Pure RAW is done.
I purchased it because I think this will greatly improve photos of my artwork etc. I'll have to use apple photos first to export because photoshop cs6 is on my older MacBook Pro.
Results of this software are outstanding. I am micro 4/3 user. And using this software I am able to use again my old lightroom 5.7 without any subscription to edit converted in DXO pure raw dng files from unsupported by lightroom 5.7 cameras. Effects of the deep prime noise reduction are insane. But you need a decent gpu I have gforce 1660 super and it works well. But for the low iso well exposed photos hq conversion is enough. great piece of software. Dxo + lightroom 5.7 + affinity photo great affordable combo without any monthly subscription.
One thing I've never heard anyone mention is the file size after conversion. It's about three times the size as the original NEF file. The resulting files are noticeably sharper, however.
The reason the DNG files are so much larger is that they are partially demosaiced into an RGB DNG file. That's three times the data of a standard monochromatic RAW or DNG file. (The DXO DNGs are more than 3x larger from what I've seen.) Not all DNG files are partially demosaiced into RGB, which is why if you convert a proprietary RAW file to DNG in Lr or Adobe's DNG converter the file size will be much closer. Fuji shooters who prefer to use Iridient Transformer as a pre-RAW converter experience the same thing. The file storage considerations that arise from this are the primary argument against batch converting all of your RAW files before culling and rating them. Batch converting more than triples your storage costs.
Yes, but… really… hard disks are cheap these days. Even a modern 2TB NVMe based external Thunderbolt SSD’s only commands half of the the small fortune, I paid for my first 80 megabyte (full height, 5.25 inch hard disk - at roughly 10 megabyte per pund ;-) I will make room! As an old Indian saying goes: “Ther’s always room for one more”!
I agree with comments, PureRAW sharpening is too strong. DxO needs to fix this. Else, unusable for my RAW files. I shoot: Canon 1Dx Mark III. Always RAW files.
The software is great at noise reduction. But it gives you no settings at all. There is no way to turn off sharpening (unless you turnoff lens corrections all together). This is a deal-breaker for me.

DXO noise reduction is awesome but the camera module for lens collection is still faulty. believe it or not , it adds vignette to my RAW file !!! My camera : Sony a7RIII Lens : Sony 20mm f1.8 G And I just have found that if we do not want DXO to sharpen and lighthen our RAW image, Do not click " Camera Module" The RAW will be only denoised and the rest will be kept in original.
First of all, it's a real pleasure to watch your videos. Just one question that is little puzzeling. At Adobe ACR module, should I put all my Sharpness and Noise reduction sliders to zero by default? As a default ACR put some sharpening (amount 25 and noise reduction (color 25) to photos. And yes, it would be great to hear, why DxO do not support newest camera phone dng files (that could really benefit for great noise reduction).
When you open a DNG in ACR, sharpening and NR are set to 0, which is where they should be. I don't have an answer to WHY phone DNG files are not yet supported; that's a question for them.
Tell DXO that while the noise reduction algorithm is fantastic, indeed, DxO PureRaw is overshapening A LOT. That nasty sharpening contour around the edges spoils the good job done by the noise reduction. They need to add a sharpening slider, or an option to disable sharpening all together.

THX for this tip! Seen in the early morning and tried it immediately afterwards with the trial version. At a first glance: much better results than my trusty Topaz Denoise I use since a year. Prob meanwhile: dng's from smartphones are not supported. Hopefully there's coming an up-date. Would be another great opportunity for cleaning mobile-pics too. Pics from my Pana G9 with 2000 ISO (300 mm teleshoots with f 5.6 and shorter times for birding) came out as like nearby captured with base-ISO. Ingenious tool especially for M43-users.
I already use Pure Raw, but you made me discover very useful tricks, thanks ! BTW, do you know if the sharpness/accentuation can be reduced in PhotoLab, and if so, with which sliders/settings ? That would be useful for some photos, especially for portraits.
Really helpful video, thanks Joseph. I have just about every noise reduction software out there but I'm finding on a RAW (Olympus) PureRAW is the best. Workflow back into LR is a bit clunky maybe...
Using test version of version 2 right now. It actually works and especially in situations, that were hard to catch with ordinary cameras and lenses: Fast movements, at distance and very low light, requiring a certain minimum depth of field - including all body parts on a twirling derwish ;-) Canon EOS 90D APS-C 17-85mm at 85mm F5.6-8.0 (auto, ⅓ steps) 25600 ISO (auto) 1/500 sec or more with indoor dancer - Wow! Canon EOS 90D APS-C 70-300mm at 300 mm F5.6 at 1/400-1/640 sec (auto) at ISO 25.600 (auto) indoor dancer - Wow-Wow!! And then the nasty one: ISO 51.200 in near darkness F5.6 and 1/100s at 85 or 300mm. Both converted to HDR after default NR. Wow-Wow-Wow!!! And one more Wow (you wouldn’t wanna look on the HDR based on Lightroom only noise reduction after using a lot of time on fine tuning - compared to waiting a few seconds for the result chewed out by the DxO critter on any lowly Apple M1 based computer (Intel version on MacBook Pro 13 2018 not ideal). Compared to Lightroom Classic 11 capabilities and „reportage use“ (you haven‘t got time to fiddle with minor details of next to insignificant importance and delivery tomorrow, when deadline is 20 minutes away) the DxO PureRAW 2 is a winner. For the first time, even indoor, low-light „fast moving objects“ can be captured with confidence on auto, with camera freezing most movements and good depth of field (NOT a thin slice, where one eye is in focus, and most of the body blurred. I said “reportage” mode - not “art” as an excuse ;-). Without even powering up my heavy, powerfull Canon Flash in order to get at least something within reach (and then not needing 300mm at all since the dancer often will be more or less to completely out of reach of the flash). I love it. It’s not the fastest tool in the block, but it certainly delivers stunningly clean results, that where completely out of reach before with the gear used here.

No. If you have PhotoLab, then you don't need PureRAW, unless you want the convenience of the workflow. The decoding and denoting in PureRAW are identical to that in PhotoLab 4.
I really wanted to but my "lifetime" license expired (no idea how that works!) and I wasn't keen to spend the money on it to show what can be explained. Right-click to reveal the image, then add that to Capture One.
I'm trying to determine what I need to get; DXO, Pure Raw, Deep Prime etc... are some of the afor mentioned included in DXO? I do photo editing. Thanks & best wishes for 2022!
DxO is the company. The products you’re referring to are DxO PhotoLab and DxO PureRAW. “Deep Prime” is the de losing technology in both of those apps. Everything in PureRAW is in PhotoLab. PureRAW is just a standalone RAW decoder for those who prefer to use another editor. PhotoLab is a complete editor. Great question - This is the same raw engine that is in DxO PhotoLab 4. If you already own that, the only reason you would buy this is simplicity - if you prefer to edit outside of PhotoLab, this is a streamlined method of processing RAW photos with the DxO technology, then passing it off to another app. You _can_ do the same thing in PhotoLab, but it's more steps.
@@photojoseph, This is where Fujifilm shine. So, either you shoot Acros simulation. And turn the Noise in to grains. Just like you see in DXO Filmpack. In colour, the digital noise is super low. You can add graines to give a film looks. Just like DXO filmpack. And Simple software like silkypix is very capable in general. Finally, you and me both know, professionally you never shoot 25000-50000 iso in Studio. And for websites, social media it don't matter. Because photo will be compressed anyway. Finally, I know some great photographers who shoot Fujifilm in very high ISO regularly. Never had problems before. Will never have problems in future. Je sais que vous êtes l'ambassadeur de DXO. Et je sais aussi que PL supporterai le Fujifilm en futur.
@@photojoseph most of the time I take 10 to 12 images and stack them in Sequator to reduce noise. I wonder how much cleaner the images would be to I've pure raw first and then stack in Sequator. I probably wouldn't have to use as many images. But I also wonder if it would cause any problems.

@@photojoseph Thank you. But I don't understand what you mean by "unless you want the convenient work flow" From lightroom I can select a RAW file and click edit in DXO photo lab 4. It then opens up DXO photo lab 4. From there I can edit the RAW file. Put it through Deep Prime and export back to Lightroom. How would using the new app be different and more convenient please.
Because that workflow sends a TIF back, although you may be able to modify it to send back a DNG; I'm not sure. Of course though Lightroom isn't the only workflow; if you're happy with the workflow you have, my all means, stick with it! This product is really made for non-PL users.
Very interesting !! I am trying the different options you suggested, but I have issues : 1) When I transfer the edited CRaw from LR to DXO, I have very good DNG back, but without the edited parameter I made before in LR 2) while yesterday using the plug-in I found the DNG back from DXO being in the folder and in the Catalog, today I see I the folder, but I have to add to the catalog "manually" . Any suggestion ? thanks
just the basic noise reduction in any app. This level of NR requires the raw data, as it's not "removing" it as much as it is recalculating the raw translation, which means you need the RAW data.
Dear Sir, i would like to mention that you can also do a drag and drop in case people use Adobe Bridge as an asset management tool like myself. I also have Topaz denoise and Topaz studio which give similar results. One thing i have noticed is that Pure Raw adds some details to the raw file. In the case of Topaz Studio i normally use the AI which is pretty darn good. While Topaz can be used a plugin inside Photoshop , DxO 's Pure Raw cannot at this point in time. Maybe they would bring in another version to work as a plugin. Anyways thanks for the Video.
@@photojoseph Yes i use mac os. After trying different applications, one thing is for sure. Applications are moving generally in the direction of AI usage and at some point it would be difficult to state which one is better. I use different apps depending upon the images.
Hi Joseph. You said it doesn't keep crop setting. It does if you first save xmp sidecar file and then process image in Pure RAW. All keywords are also preserved then. Really unhappy drag-and-drop doesn't work in Windows 10. It makes converting old LR catalogs ... uncomfortable. Specifically when you are using LR Collections and have ... thousands of photos. As Pure RAE DeepPRIME is pretty time consuming it seems to be reasonable not to process all photos in gallery - just those which are really the best. One more thing - to have more or less similar comparison you should compare Pure RAW results with LR Enhance details option. Still Pure RAW is winner :)
Interesting. I have found that crop does carry over sometimes, so maybe that was the trick! And good point about Enhance Details, and good to know PureRAW still wins ;-) I don't think Enance Details removes any noise though, does it?
Dragging pictures from LR Classic to DxO PureRAW does not seem to work on PC - or is there a different key combination? I have a lot of pictures taken with E-620 (!) and would like to processes those. Help is appreciated!

What LR user who cares about noise and sharpness would ignore the sharpening radius and masking sliders? I presume your module uses a detail mask on the sharpening as well as tunes the sharpening to the intrinsic fuzziness of the unsharp areas.
Because the sharpening is a totally different algorithm than the generic sliders you're used to, and are calibrated on a camera+lens per camera+lens basis, even varying levels at varying focal lengths and apertures.
Thanks Joseph. This is by far the best tutorial on DxO PureRAW workflow integration I ever seen. But for some reason, LR Classic on Windows didn't allow me to drag n drop photos in PureRAW nor to any external window or app. Any idea how to overcome this?
Just realized the issue.. kind of a deal breaker for me.. I would love to simply just export numerous pictures and get them denoised... sad :( Anybody with a solution?

Sorry I must have not read the entire original comment. I’ve heard many reports that drag-and-drop doesn’t work in Windows. Right-click, reveal in Browser, is probably the fastest way.
@@photojoseph Drag'n'drop works between Capture1 and DXOPR2 on win11 but not on lightroom, so it needs to be bug or something with windows version of lightroom. I have C1 trial now and thinking to chance from adobe to it because that D'n'D, mouse scroll zoom and C1 can be configured better to ultrawide screen(filmstrip on left side) + many other advantages. Then i lose Photoshop but i don't use it almost at all anyway.
I found the news a pair of days ago. I´m DxO PL4 user and don´t have it clear if it´s a new software better than the PL4 or if it is a special software for Adobe Lr and Ps. Understanding in the last case if you already have the DxO PL4 software is the same technology. My questions is wondering if it would be an upgrade from the PL4. I purchased it after a hard research comparing some tools. I really like it and use it daily, but sometimes I also like Capture NX-D work. It changes a lot the original image appearance in most cases. When click on an image you can see in an instant the original one and then changes. Right like Lr does. A little discomfortable as I like to see the picture with the picture control taken (always shoot NL-neutral, Nikon). Lightroom has very good picture control profiles, at least in the case of my old D90. Neutral, Standard, etc. But DxO PL4 only offers 1 for each camera with higher contrast level. I guess they chose the standard maybe.
Excellent video! Though when I drag and drop an image with my A7RIII import preset from LR Classic to PureRAW the sliders are zeroed out after returning it to LR unlike in your video. I wonder why? I've tried ctrl-tab also but it's the same. Also, I find dragging and dropping a LR thumbnail onto PureRAW in my dock (on Mac) saves the ctrl-tab step.
Does anyone know if it works in Windows? When I drag the thumbnail to PureRAW it just denies.. Would be a great feature especially if it will keep the settings like in the video!
I tried to drag the photo from LR to Pure Raw - but its not exporting it - it shows the circle with the / across it! i dont know whats going on there :-( And if i import directly into Pure Raw and then export to LR - it doesnt create a sub folder as you mentioned So then what i tried was - convert the photo into BW in LR, then went to pure Raw and imported the photo there - but it imported it as a color photo so that means my external XMP is not being read.
On a computer? Yes, you just have to export a TIF then open it manually in the Nik plugin. If you mean on mobile (iOS, iPadOS or Android), then no - the DxO apps only run on macOS and Windows.
I'm using a windows system with standard lightroom. (not classic) I see no way to transfer files to DxO. I've tried all these drag and drop methods, but nothing happens. I also don't see a "reveal" option to just open the folder. Any clues?
Because Adobe hasn’t built the API for _any_ third party app to work that way. Complain to Adobe, please. They need to hear from users that we want plugins!! The only way to do it is to export the original raw file, then process in PureRAW, then import the DNG. Sucks.
This is the video and with PhotoJoseph that is going to get me going with DXO PureRAW... But I am stuck, I want to pull the cropped version from Lightroom into PureRAW and I got to the part in Lightroom where I can check only 'cropped' and leave all else unchecked, but then I go to the Edit menu and 'copy' and in PureRAW I want to 'command V on a Mac 'paste'' but PureRAW has no way to take in a pasted image. I need the careful step by step of how I get that image that has 'cropped' only selected and to a form where PureRAW can download it or even if possible 'drag and drop.' I'm really stuck at this point. Please help.
I don’t follow. You want to send a cropped image to PureRAW? You can’t; it has to use the full raw file. Copy and paste the adjustments back onto the file in Lightroom (including crop). If the issue is that that’s not happening automatically then make sure that automatically writing metadata is enabled in the Lightroom preferences.
Question: I initially import my RAW files into Lightroom Classic as DNG files rather than native raw format files - I just prefer not having .xmp files. Will DxO Pure Raw still be able to work with them?
I used to share your opinion about sidecar files years ago. I now see them as an advantage because they make my backups exponentially faster. If I make a small edit to a RAW file with a sidecar file, only the small sidecar file needs to be copied over/uploaded. If I make that same change to a DNG, I have to back up the entire file.
@@photojoseph I haven't downloaded the product, but another reviewer tried it with an existing DNG file and it didn't work. Only native RAW files are accepted.
@@timothylinn Thanks, Timothy. I considered that argument, but my backups happen in the background and with today's modern hardware are incredibly fast. I also don't work on a file dozens of times, so backing up the entire file a couple of times is no big deal. I'm just a neat freak and prefer to have just one file.

@@photojoseph mac....also when returning back from photo lab as a dng Lightroom does not automatically open the import dialogue. Although the plugins manager has the exporter and importer module for photo lab running.

I’m sorry but not being able to customize any setting at all (amount of denoising, amount of sharpening) is an absolute no-go. What are they thinking? Nobody serious about his photos will ever allow this kind of automatic processing. The last image that you show with the flowers in the foreground demonstrates that perfectly: the sharpening is simply atrocious.
Thank you for this good video. I’d like to go back and send many of my old photos through Pure Raw. However, they are inside Lightroom and have already been converted to DNG. I do not have the original RAW files. Will I still be able to do what you do at 12:34 and following? I ask because you seem to be saying that what you do here works only because you still have the original RAW file, as opposed to having converted it to DNG already.

I have licensed the current version of Dxo PhotosLabs. About 50% involves iPhone raw photos version s through 12. Last time I checked DXO dis not support the raw DNG files. Does PureRaw now support these cameras? Please advise.
The RAW processing in PureRAW is the same engine with the same support as PhotoLab 4. I just checked the list, and iPhone 12 RAW does not appear to be supported. I suggest visiting the supported cameras page www.dxo.com/supported-cameras/ and at the bottom, there's a "hardware not supported? make a suggestion" button. They really do base a lot of development on user requests, so do fill that in, and ask anyone else you know who uses it to do it, too!
@@photojoseph Thanks for your prompt reply. Not supporting Apple raw in versions 8 through 12 is a real letdown. Over the past couple of years I have made several requests to DXO and they merely ignore them by replying in a noncommittal way. The DNG files from Apple are fully supported by Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, including the latest ProRaw in 12 Pro and Pro Max, so it shouldn’t be an impossible task.
I just downloaded V 1.2 of pure RAW. Like you explained In LR, I selected an image dragged it to Pure RAW using ALT+TAB.. and thats it... Nothing got copied. I guess I am doing something wrong.. Maybe someone knows? Thanks in advance !
@@photojoseph so no converter .... i tried topaz jped to raw and files aren't supported so, i guess my question really is,... what specific file formats are recognized by and workable within the program, that i may find a workable converter or program one.
ETTR doesn't solve all problems and at best will give you a stop or two difference. And, you can't go back in time and re-shoot just to overexpose and try to reduce noise.

im not sure this is really ideal for all camera systems and DAM's. if you are shooting fujifilm and on C1, there go all your film sims. The NR looks good though.

I see some people struggling with the drag and drop in windows, what I have done instead with the same result is I have created an export preset that exports the original RAW file into the same folder as it already is and then in at the bottom "Post-Processing" browse to the Dxo Pure Raw EXE file, in my case "C:\Program Files\DxO\DxO PureRAW\PureRawv1.exe". I actually prefer this way to the drag and drop as I'm a big right-click fan after many years of windows use. The only drawback is that it duplicates the original RAW file, if that is a problem, just delete it after the roundtrip to Pure RAW is done.

I purchased it because I think this will greatly improve photos of my artwork etc. I'll have to use apple photos first to export because photoshop cs6 is on my older MacBook Pro.
Results of this software are outstanding. I am micro 4/3 user. And using this software I am able to use again my old lightroom 5.7 without any subscription to edit converted in DXO pure raw dng files from unsupported by lightroom 5.7 cameras. Effects of the deep prime noise reduction are insane. But you need a decent gpu I have gforce 1660 super and it works well. But for the low iso well exposed photos hq conversion is enough. great piece of software. Dxo + lightroom 5.7 + affinity photo great affordable combo without any monthly subscription.
There you go! And yes, it does take power to run quickly… but even if it takes a while, the job will get done!

One thing I've never heard anyone mention is the file size after conversion. It's about three times the size as the original NEF file. The resulting files are noticeably sharper, however.
yeah, DNG are unfortunately quite a bit larger. I don't actually know why, TBH
The reason the DNG files are so much larger is that they are partially demosaiced into an RGB DNG file. That's three times the data of a standard monochromatic RAW or DNG file. (The DXO DNGs are more than 3x larger from what I've seen.) Not all DNG files are partially demosaiced into RGB, which is why if you convert a proprietary RAW file to DNG in Lr or Adobe's DNG converter the file size will be much closer. Fuji shooters who prefer to use Iridient Transformer as a pre-RAW converter experience the same thing. The file storage considerations that arise from this are the primary argument against batch converting all of your RAW files before culling and rating them. Batch converting more than triples your storage costs.
Yes, but… really… hard disks are cheap these days. Even a modern 2TB NVMe based external Thunderbolt SSD’s only commands half of the the small fortune, I paid for my first 80 megabyte (full height, 5.25 inch hard disk - at roughly 10 megabyte per pund ;-)

I agree with comments, PureRAW sharpening is too strong. DxO needs to fix this. Else, unusable for my RAW files.

The software is great at noise reduction. But it gives you no settings at all. There is no way to turn off sharpening (unless you turnoff lens corrections all together). This is a deal-breaker for me.

DXO noise reduction is awesome but the camera module for lens collection is still faulty.
believe it or not , it adds vignette to my RAW file !!!

And I just have found that if we do not want DXO to sharpen and lighthen our RAW image, Do not click " Camera Module"
The RAW will be only denoised and the rest will be kept in original.

Just one question that is little puzzeling. At Adobe ACR module, should I put all my Sharpness and Noise reduction sliders to zero by default? As a default ACR put some sharpening (amount 25 and noise reduction (color 25) to photos. And yes, it would be great to hear, why DxO do not support newest camera phone dng files (that could really benefit for great noise reduction).
When you open a DNG in ACR, sharpening and NR are set to 0, which is where they should be. I don't have an answer to WHY phone DNG files are not yet supported; that's a question for them.

Tell DXO that while the noise reduction algorithm is fantastic, indeed, DxO PureRaw is overshapening A LOT. That nasty sharpening contour around the edges spoils the good job done by the noise reduction. They need to add a sharpening slider, or an option to disable sharpening all together.
They have heard this but need to hear it again. Please provide feedback through their website. The more they hear it the better.

THX for this tip! Seen in the early morning and tried it immediately afterwards with the trial version. At a first glance: much better results than my trusty Topaz Denoise I use since a year. Prob meanwhile: dng's from smartphones are not supported. Hopefully there's coming an up-date. Would be another great opportunity for cleaning mobile-pics too.
Pics from my Pana G9 with 2000 ISO (300 mm teleshoots with f 5.6 and shorter times for birding) came out as like nearby captured with base-ISO. Ingenious tool especially for M43-users.

It actually works and especially in situations, that were hard to catch with ordinary cameras and lenses: Fast movements, at distance and very low light, requiring a certain minimum depth of field - including all body parts on a twirling derwish ;-)
Canon EOS 90D APS-C 17-85mm at 85mm F5.6-8.0 (auto, ⅓ steps) 25600 ISO (auto) 1/500 sec or more with indoor dancer - Wow!
Canon EOS 90D APS-C 70-300mm at 300 mm F5.6 at 1/400-1/640 sec (auto) at ISO 25.600 (auto) indoor dancer - Wow-Wow!!
And then the nasty one: ISO 51.200 in near darkness F5.6 and 1/100s at 85 or 300mm. Both converted to HDR after default NR. Wow-Wow-Wow!!! And one more Wow (you wouldn’t wanna look on the HDR based on Lightroom only noise reduction after using a lot of time on fine tuning - compared to waiting a few seconds for the result chewed out by the DxO critter on any lowly Apple M1 based computer (Intel version on MacBook Pro 13 2018 not ideal).
Compared to Lightroom Classic 11 capabilities and „reportage use“ (you haven‘t got time to fiddle with minor details of next to insignificant importance and delivery tomorrow, when deadline is 20 minutes away) the DxO PureRAW 2 is a winner.
For the first time, even indoor, low-light „fast moving objects“ can be captured with confidence on auto, with camera freezing most movements and good depth of field (NOT a thin slice, where one eye is in focus, and most of the body blurred. I said “reportage” mode - not “art” as an excuse ;-). Without even powering up my heavy, powerfull Canon Flash in order to get at least something within reach (and then not needing 300mm at all since the dancer often will be more or less to completely out of reach of the flash).
I love it. It’s not the fastest tool in the block, but it certainly delivers stunningly clean results, that where completely out of reach before with the gear used here.

There's a full compatibility list of supported files at dxo.com/supported-cameras and yeah Fuji x-trans have long been on their list of unsupported.

No. If you have PhotoLab, then you don't need PureRAW, unless you want the convenience of the workflow. The decoding and denoting in PureRAW are identical to that in PhotoLab 4.

DxO is the company. The products you’re referring to are DxO PhotoLab and DxO PureRAW. “Deep Prime” is the de losing technology in both of those apps. Everything in PureRAW is in PhotoLab. PureRAW is just a standalone RAW decoder for those who prefer to use another editor. PhotoLab is a complete editor. When using Pure Raw do you have to use the DXO optic module, can I try processing with and without the module?

Great question - This is the same raw engine that is in DxO PhotoLab 4. If you already own that, the only reason you would buy this is simplicity - if you prefer to edit outside of PhotoLab, this is a streamlined method of processing RAW photos with the DxO technology, then passing it off to another app. You _can_ do the same thing in PhotoLab, but it's more steps.

I am sooo frustrated that DXO refuses to support Fujifilm X cameras, because they do not want to support the sensor. Grrr.
Fujifilm is already a great camera company with a great sensor and optics. It does not require any further software assistance.

This is where Fujifilm shine. So, either you shoot Acros simulation. And turn the Noise in to grains. Just like you see in DXO Filmpack.
In colour, the digital noise is super low. You can add graines to give a film looks.
Just like DXO filmpack. And Simple software like silkypix is very capable in general.
Finally, you and me both know, professionally you never shoot 25000-50000 iso in Studio.
And for websites, social media it don't matter. Because photo will be compressed anyway.
Finally, I know some great photographers who shoot Fujifilm in very high ISO regularly. Never had problems before. Will never have problems in future.

Yes! While I didn't show a star image, I've seen examples where the Lightroom noise reduction eliminates stars, but the PureRAW does not. It's wild.
@@photojoseph most of the time I take 10 to 12 images and stack them in Sequator to reduce noise. I wonder how much cleaner the images would be to I've pure raw first and then stack in Sequator. I probably wouldn't have to use as many images. But I also wonder if it would cause any problems.

It then opens up DXO photo lab 4. From there I can edit the RAW file. Put it through Deep Prime and export back to Lightroom. How would using the new app be different and more convenient please.
Because that workflow sends a TIF back, although you may be able to modify it to send back a DNG; I'm not sure. Of course though Lightroom isn't the only workflow; if you're happy with the workflow you have, my all means, stick with it! This product is really made for non-PL users.

1) When I transfer the edited CRaw from LR to DXO, I have very good DNG back, but without the edited parameter I made before in LR
2) while yesterday using the plug-in I found the DNG back from DXO being in the folder and in the Catalog, today I see I the folder, but I have to add to the catalog "manually" . Any suggestion ? thanks

just the basic noise reduction in any app. This level of NR requires the raw data, as it's not "removing" it as much as it is recalculating the raw translation, which means you need the RAW data.
So how do I do this with light room cc? Is there an easy way?
Export original then reimport. It’s the only way.
Dear Sir, i would like to mention that you can also do a drag and drop in case people use Adobe Bridge as an asset management tool like myself. I also have Topaz denoise and Topaz studio which give similar results. One thing i have noticed is that Pure Raw adds some details to the raw file. In the case of Topaz Studio i normally use the AI which is pretty darn good. While Topaz can be used a plugin inside Photoshop , DxO 's Pure Raw cannot at this point in time. Maybe they would bring in another version to work as a plugin. Anyways thanks for the Video.

@@photojoseph Yes i use mac os. After trying different applications, one thing is for sure. Applications are moving generally in the direction of AI usage and at some point it would be difficult to state which one is better. I use different apps depending upon the images.
PureRAW isn't AI. It's painstaking manual calibration of each and every camera and lens combination!

Hi Joseph. You said it doesn't keep crop setting. It does if you first save xmp sidecar file and then process image in Pure RAW. All keywords are also preserved then.
Really unhappy drag-and-drop doesn't work in Windows 10. It makes converting old LR catalogs ... uncomfortable. Specifically when you are using LR Collections and have ... thousands of photos. As Pure RAE DeepPRIME is pretty time consuming it seems to be reasonable not to process all photos in gallery - just those which are really the best.
One more thing - to have more or less similar comparison you should compare Pure RAW results with LR Enhance details option. Still Pure RAW is winner :)
Interesting. I have found that crop does carry over sometimes, so maybe that was the trick! And good point about Enhance Details, and good to know PureRAW still wins ;-) I don't think Enance Details removes any noise though, does it?

That’s not a dxo feature, it’s an Adobe feature. I think that it’s probably even a difference between macOS and Windows itself.

Yes, that's the traditional workflow. The question was about the cool drag-and-drop from Lightroom workflow, which I now know only works on macOS.

Absolutely; every lens it supports has custom calibration.

Fyi, Lightroom Classic isn't cloud based and the raw files are on your hard drive.
Yeah… I know… that's why I showed Lr Classic this way, and specifically pointed out Lightroom (CC) as being cloud based.
Its a shame Pure Raw 2 software deletes some of the IPTC data entered in LR like Caption and Title.

What LR user who cares about noise and sharpness would ignore the sharpening radius and masking sliders? I presume your module uses a detail mask on the sharpening as well as tunes the sharpening to the intrinsic fuzziness of the unsharp areas.
Because the sharpening is a totally different algorithm than the generic sliders you're used to, and are calibrated on a camera+lens per camera+lens basis, even varying levels at varying focal lengths and apertures.
Thanks Joseph. This is by far the best tutorial on DxO PureRAW workflow integration I ever seen. But for some reason, LR Classic on Windows didn't allow me to drag n drop photos in PureRAW nor to any external window or app. Any idea how to overcome this?

Sorry I must have not read the entire original comment. I’ve heard many reports that drag-and-drop doesn’t work in Windows. Right-click, reveal in Browser, is probably the fastest way.
@@photojoseph Drag'n'drop works between Capture1 and DXOPR2 on win11 but not on lightroom, so it needs to be bug or something with windows version of lightroom. I have C1 trial now and thinking to chance from adobe to it because that D'n'D, mouse scroll zoom and C1 can be configured better to ultrawide screen(filmstrip on left side) + many other advantages. Then i lose Photoshop but i don't use it almost at all anyway.
I found the news a pair of days ago. I´m DxO PL4 user and don´t have it clear if it´s a new software better than the PL4 or if it is a special software for Adobe Lr and Ps. Understanding in the last case if you already have the DxO PL4 software is the same technology. My questions is wondering if it would be an upgrade from the PL4. I purchased it after a hard research comparing some tools. I really like it and use it daily, but sometimes I also like Capture NX-D work. It changes a lot the original image appearance in most cases. When click on an image you can see in an instant the original one and then changes. Right like Lr does. A little discomfortable as I like to see the picture with the picture control taken (always shoot NL-neutral, Nikon). Lightroom has very good picture control profiles, at least in the case of my old D90. Neutral, Standard, etc. But DxO PL4 only offers 1 for each camera with higher contrast level. I guess they chose the standard maybe.
There is no advantage to PureRAW if you already have PhotoLab 4 other than convenience. The raw processing and deepprime are the same.
Excellent video! Though when I drag and drop an image with my A7RIII import preset from LR Classic to PureRAW the sliders are zeroed out after returning it to LR unlike in your video. I wonder why? I've tried ctrl-tab also but it's the same. Also, I find dragging and dropping a LR thumbnail onto PureRAW in my dock (on Mac) saves the ctrl-tab step.

I tried to drag the photo from LR to Pure Raw - but its not exporting it - it shows the circle with the / across it! i dont know whats going on there :-(
And if i import directly into Pure Raw and then export to LR - it doesnt create a sub folder as you mentioned
So then what i tried was - convert the photo into BW in LR, then went to pure Raw and imported the photo there - but it imported it as a color photo so that means my external XMP is not being read.
Is the workflow any different if you're using Adobe Bridge?
Someone here just said you can even drag and drop, but if not then I think you can right-click open-in PureRAW from Bridge.
Can I use DXO if I edit only on Lightroom mobile?
On a computer? Yes, you just have to export a TIF then open it manually in the Nik plugin. If you mean on mobile (iOS, iPadOS or Android), then no - the DxO apps only run on macOS and Windows.
So if I have DxO Photolabs 4 does that mean I dont need PureRAW?
I'm using a windows system with standard lightroom. (not classic) I see no way to transfer files to DxO. I've tried all these drag and drop methods, but nothing happens. I also don't see a "reveal" option to just open the folder. Any clues?
Because Adobe hasn’t built the API for _any_ third party app to work that way. Complain to Adobe, please. They need to hear from users that we want plugins!! The only way to do it is to export the original raw file, then process in PureRAW, then import the DNG. Sucks.

This is the video and with PhotoJoseph that is going to get me going with DXO PureRAW... But I am stuck, I want to pull the cropped version from Lightroom into PureRAW and I got to the part in Lightroom where I can check only 'cropped' and leave all else unchecked, but then I go to the Edit menu and 'copy' and in PureRAW I want to 'command V on a Mac 'paste'' but PureRAW has no way to take in a pasted image. I need the careful step by step of how I get that image that has 'cropped' only selected and to a form where PureRAW can download it or even if possible 'drag and drop.' I'm really stuck at this point. Please help.
I don’t follow. You want to send a cropped image to PureRAW? You can’t; it has to use the full raw file. Copy and paste the adjustments back onto the file in Lightroom (including crop). If the issue is that that’s not happening automatically then make sure that automatically writing metadata is enabled in the Lightroom preferences.
Question: I initially import my RAW files into Lightroom Classic as DNG files rather than native raw format files - I just prefer not having .xmp files. Will DxO Pure Raw still be able to work with them?
If you've already converted the RAW to DNG, then no, I don't think that works… you should download the trial and try it though. Please let us know!
I used to share your opinion about sidecar files years ago. I now see them as an advantage because they make my backups exponentially faster. If I make a small edit to a RAW file with a sidecar file, only the small sidecar file needs to be copied over/uploaded. If I make that same change to a DNG, I have to back up the entire file.
@@photojoseph I haven't downloaded the product, but another reviewer tried it with an existing DNG file and it didn't work. Only native RAW files are accepted.
@@timothylinn Thanks, Timothy. I considered that argument, but my backups happen in the background and with today's modern hardware are incredibly fast. I also don't work on a file dozens of times, so backing up the entire file a couple of times is no big deal. I'm just a neat freak and prefer to have just one file.

Thanks for the video, I’m using photo lab 4 but when i drag the image from Lightroom classic with edits the edits are not seen in photo lab 4 - any ideas ? Much appreciated

@@photojoseph mac....also when returning back from photo lab as a dng Lightroom does not automatically open the import dialogue. Although the plugins manager has the exporter and importer module for photo lab running.

I’m sorry but not being able to customize any setting at all (amount of denoising, amount of sharpening) is an absolute no-go. What are they thinking?
Nobody serious about his photos will ever allow this kind of automatic processing.
The last image that you show with the flowers in the foreground demonstrates that perfectly: the sharpening is simply atrocious.

Thank you for this good video. I’d like to go back and send many of my old photos through Pure Raw. However, they are inside Lightroom and have already been converted to DNG. I do not have the original RAW files. Will I still be able to do what you do at 12:34 and following? I ask because you seem to be saying that what you do here works only because you still have the original RAW file, as opposed to having converted it to DNG already.
I'm pretty sure you still need the original RAW files for DXO to do its thing.

I have licensed the current version of Dxo PhotosLabs. About 50% involves iPhone raw photos version s through 12. Last time I checked DXO dis not support the raw DNG files. Does PureRaw now support these cameras? Please advise.
The RAW processing in PureRAW is the same engine with the same support as PhotoLab 4. I just checked the list, and iPhone 12 RAW does not appear to be supported. I suggest visiting the supported cameras page www.dxo.com/supported-cameras/ and at the bottom, there's a "hardware not supported? make a suggestion" button. They really do base a lot of development on user requests, so do fill that in, and ask anyone else you know who uses it to do it, too!
@@photojoseph Thanks for your prompt reply. Not supporting Apple raw in versions 8 through 12 is a real letdown. Over the past couple of years I have made several requests to DXO and they merely ignore them by replying in a noncommittal way. The DNG files from Apple are fully supported by Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, including the latest ProRaw in 12 Pro and Pro Max, so it shouldn’t be an impossible task.

Because raw files from Apple phones are not reall RAWS. Just cooked exposures
I just downloaded V 1.2 of pure RAW. Like you explained In LR, I selected an image dragged it to Pure RAW using ALT+TAB.. and thats it... Nothing got copied. I guess I am doing something wrong.. Maybe someone knows? Thanks in advance !
I've heard mixed messages if it works in Windows or not. I think it might be OS related, but unfortunately I don't know. Sorry!
what format conversion software exists to prep non cam raw files for use in dxo
PureRAW is only for RAW files
@@photojoseph so no converter .... i tried topaz jped to raw and files aren't supported so, i guess my question really is,... what specific file formats are recognized by and workable within the program, that i may find a workable converter or program one.

No, it does not support conversion of Fujifilm X-Trans RAF files. Capture One does, as well as Iridient Developer.
Don't use in camera denoise. Use ettr. Watch lr do it equal to the other two who needs you to shoot otherwise. 😉
ETTR doesn't solve all problems and at best will give you a stop or two difference. And, you can't go back in time and re-shoot just to overexpose and try to reduce noise.

oh, I think I know what you mean… RAW Small. Some cameras shoot a smaller version of a RAW image, and the software may not support that.

It takes 5 min to process a g9 file in pure raw. Is this normal?
Depends on your system. You saw on this demo how fast it was, but this is a Mac Pro.
im not sure this is really ideal for all camera systems and DAM's. if you are shooting fujifilm and on C1, there go all your film sims. The NR looks good though.
If it wasn’t for DXO as a company, I might have taken a look. I will NEVER give another penny to that company
