From reading the wiki page of Gaara (I've never watched Naruto), Amumu's not like him. Gaara eventually was accepted by his people, and made friends. The curse that Amumu is under specifically is for him to be forever alone. The power he is given is to drive him to be alone. He is a child that will never be comforted, never have friends, and any who attempt to do so will wither and die while Amumu helplessly watches.
