  • So I finally quit all social media, but I do intend to get back on at some point in the future. I received a lot of feedback from you guys and I think that after I figure out how to live without social media, I'll come back on to see if my training has paid off. Thank you for tuning in.

      ^Absolutely this! Have seen a lot of videos about getting rid of (and/or detoxing from) social media, and there are very few videos about UA-cam addiction unfortunately (and some of them seem to be just about regulating time on UA-cam, which isn't helpful if the addicted person is trying to slowly wean their way off UA-cam before going cold turkey, depending on why they're always on UA-cam to begin with). Imo, I think one of the important things to remember about addiction of any kind is that it can sometimes be a coping mechanism and/or self-soothing thing when they're dealing with something else in their life that they turn to social media/UA-cam for.
      In my experience having a UA-cam addiction, I'm self-aware enough to know why I'm in that spiral (mostly from a combo of struggling to find a job/getting easily distracted on the Internet when I do go job-hunting along with feeling despondent that I haven't been able to find one, as well as having some other personal issues going on in my life lately that I don't wanna disclose).

      It's just so hard to find that balance. Social media is so all or nothing, you can't have the positives without an insane amount of negatives. But I also feel like those positives are invaluable and irreplaceable, from knowing what's going on in the world that really matters to hearing different perspectives even to just seeing really good jokes that crack you up and come back to you at random and brighten your day.

      Social media was sold to us on the obvious positives, but the capitalist profit motive (along with the ubiquitous advertisement model) meant that these tech giants' business model was NOT going to be geared towards those things, but simply purely based on engagement. Time spent on app. And that is the incentive structure that has led to what we see today on social media (and also platforms like YT)

    A few years ago my ISP fucked up and left me with no internet for a month. I couldn't even get 4G because of the remote area I live in... For the first week or so, I was going out of my mind with boredom, but something clicked eventually.
    My attention span came back and I started reading books, watching movies and listening to music like I hadn't done in years. Not just passively having something on in the background while I idly flicked through social media, but giving it my full attention and getting so much more out of the experience.
    By the end of the month I'd more or less stopped even thinking about going online, but then they reconnected me, I went back online and all that detoxing was undone.

    you don't realize how toxic social media is, and how dysfunctional your way of thinking becomes in so many ways until you've eliminated them. The problem with this is bigger than ourselves. The problem is that there are literally billions of people in the world just like this. I seriously think that social media is going to bring about an involution in human culture and many other aspects.

    As someone who quit social media (minus UA-cam) then got back on, it’s really easy to fall back into old patterns. I’d suggest not rejoining until you determine how exactly you intend to use each app, and also limiting yourself to as little apps as possible. I went from IG, FB, TT, YT and SC to IG and YT because that’s all I need to stay up to date and relax for a bit.
    Also, I found a lot of peace in using social media on my laptop instead of my phone. I barely spend time on socials when I’m on my laptop; 15-20 minutes max (minus UA-cam lol).

    Real shit G. You just inspired me to get off YT again. I deleted IG and all other social media at the beginning of the year and honestly it wasn’t hard at all. But why would it be when I just replaced all that saved time with just more YT? I tried deleting it back this summer, but I kid you not, I literally started using the horrid mobile chrome version of YT, that’s how addicted I was, or am.
    But this time around I’m not going to try to just delete the app and cold turkey it, because I know that won’t work for me. My new plan is, I can only watch YT on my 1 hour break at work or play in the background while I’m getting ready for work. Other than that, it’s no more. No more watching YT videos wasting all of my little free time after work and no more staying up late and wasting my weekend away staring at my phone all day. And I know if I stick to that I will be 400% more productive and actually be able to make progress in my life rather than just sticking to comfort and stagnation.
    Thanks again brother. I am now subbed btw 💯

    Changing how you approach these apps really helps(in my experience). Instead off using UA-cam as a place to escape to because being alone with yourself for 5 minutes is too much i use UA-cam(through an adblocker) to actively search for information about subjects i am interested in.
    UA-cam is a good place for that, no matter how niche the subject you’ll find someone who made a video about it. The difference between doing research on UA-cam versus through other means is that you can *see* people do stuff. And that connects well with our brains, as we all are still basically villagers deep down that learn best when somebody who knows what they’re talking about “sits you down” and explains it. Especially when you need practical knowledge and you don’t have people arround you to teach that learning through UA-cam can really work.
    And in my experience just forcing yourself to stop using these apps might work but seeing how our modern worlds are almost build arround it it can be lonely or weird: try being the only one not on a phone during a multi hour train drive, you have no interaction because people aren’t interested in/scared off interaction. You’ll just be sitting there. Social media allows for that quick distraction that you don’t need to plan ahead for. So plan ahead. Take a book with you, or drawing supplies, or whatever.
    In “ye olden days” people didn’t have phones but people rarely just sat there, staring. Keep in mind everything was more labor intensive and required more time(cooking now is just turning on the gas, not also having to collect firewood, start fire, keep it going, etc, etc…).
    People usually had bags with them in which they carried little projects they could do when having downtime, like for example a drop spindle or small woodworking jobs like carving spoons or toys. Even up in my grandma’s day it was common to see a cluster of women just sitting outside, doing task while talking and gossiping.
    That’s another factor: social interaction. Just because you are off it doesn’t mean others are, this can lead to it feeling like your the last human. Obviously this is not the case. You just have to find them. I help a neighbor who has bees, walked by his house and saw a small sign, rang the doorbell and bought some honey, we talked and now we keep in touch and we help eachother with things. If i was on my phone while walking I wouldn’t have seen that sign.
    Alright, nobody is gonna read this because too long(how do you all even read ingredients on a package with this attention span!?) so I’m just gonna end here to stop wasting my time.

    not sure if you quit music or not, but in my case, if I did quit UA-cam, music would be my new vice. definitely not as distracting, but still something I’d indulge on. it’s seems apparent to me that the natural way of understanding the world is will never be in technology, but to go out in the world yourself and see what you can act upon and learn. whether it be from success and win, just be present in the world, and the opportunities will flow like water. thanks for this update, has really planted a seed that I’ll be sure to water!

    Bro, I'm on the exact same situation as you were in your first "delete my social media" video a few months ago. I quit my social media (Instagram) about a year ago and I thought I was doing great, but in reality I just replaced it with UA-cam shorts and videos, qnd I still waste more than half of my day in it. I feel like 24 hours a day is not enough for me to complete my tasks and goals. I know there are many productive things I should be doing to grow as a person, and I'm just procrastinating and watching UA-cam instead. I'm 25 now and I know this is the time for me to be doing things for myslef and not wasting my time in a senseless addiction.
    Before watching this video I had uninstalled UA-cam several times, but I failed and installed it back. I guess my subconscious kept trying to trick me into thinking that UA-cam is not an addiction like Instagram, but now I'm fully aware that it is an addiction equally harmful as any other social media, and I'm also aware of the huge positive impact that I could have just by quitting like you already experienced.
    Thanks for the reality check, you have no idea of how much you just helped me, or maybe you do. If I would've not tapped on your video, I would be scrolling for god knows how much time, but now I just made the decision of deleting UA-cam for ever, like I did with Instagram. Thanks brother and good luck!

    You’re awesome! Kudos to you for going against the grain by being “out of the loop” compared to your friends. That’s kind of happened to me already because I stopped consuming the news about a year ago since it was causing me so much distress. I find other people mention big stories to me so I manage to still have an idea what’s going on. You’ve inspired me to delete my UA-cam app and go back to only watching it on the computer, which is what I used to do way back before I got a smartphone. It will be much easier to manage my time that way. Thank you so much for these videos!!!!

    Thank you so much because I have struggled with social media while growing up. I deleted Instagram and was later diagnosed with ADHD but I find myself a lot on UA-cam during covid and even now.
    It started off with researching more about adhd and people experiences as well as listening to horror stories while I have time but it’s getting exhausting because I do the same thing everyday. I have to put more effort in managing life but unconsciously escape my life through UA-cam. It’s a struggle finding a way to cut back on UA-cam but I will try my best!

    Hey Eli, love seeing your progress between the initial quitting video and this one. I did the same, and had a lot of the same benefits! And awkwardness haha-- but something I did to stay productive and have something to do when out in public alone (like riding on the bus or in a waiting room) is read. Your phone is a hand-held kindle, so I use apple books-- there's lots of great free books too! Its the same excuse for watching youtube-- to learn something-- but doesn't feel harmful like social media.

      I agree 100%. Another upside to not knowing what’s going on is that you get to be more at peace. I just found out yesterday that there was a rumor circulating around on social media about WW3, and the only way I found that out was through my friends. The whole time I’ve been at peace just living life, they were panicking because social media made them believe that WW3 was gonna happen the next day.

    • @nuljeon
      @nuljeon 11 місяців тому +11

      I think intentionality is a key factor in that. If you are getting your education through youtube then you can set aside some time slots to watch that content purposefully. But I think the lack of intention is what causes these habits to become addictions

    • @shelby6
      @shelby6 11 місяців тому +3

      The amount of time being wasted scrolling absentmindedly isn't really learning though. Sure he's coming across random niches but not much is actually absorbed and not much is actually being learned. Current affairs can be learned about on news outlets or "intentionally" searching for that, if it's general knowledge you can watch documentaries or get a book like "a short history of nearly everything" similarly just go to a bookstore (or online) and browse the topics and choose something that peaks your interest. You can still "intentionally" search a topic to watch a video, but that's completely different to having 2 videos playing whilst reading the comments with a dude hopping around Minecraft. The problem is to not get distracted after watching that intentional video, it's so easy to jump down a different rabbit hole when the video finishes and you're recommended something else with a catchy thumbnail

    Man…I just watched your video about being addicted to YT and then immediately watched this one. I think you’ve convinced me to put the pipe down. No other social media site has me in a chokehold like this site here. And when you mentioned how long it took for you to eat breakfast because of scrolling between bites for vids - like SAME. Even while cooking it takes me longer. It’s just hard cause YT is legit my only form of entertainment, but I really need to let it go for a bit. Thanks for being my inspiration.
    Edited to add: There’s other ways to keep up with what’s going on in the world. It just requires reading and searching for information rather than having it regurgitated to you 😊 And I subbed so after the break I’ll catch up on your vids lol.

    hope you're doing well brother. I gimped my phone a while back and it's been great, but like you I got all high and mighty before realzing I'm on UA-cam all the damn time. There's some good content out there but a lot of it is crap. I've heard that you retain more from reading vs watching, and most good content can be gotten from books, so that's what I plan on doing to fill that desire for learning more about things that are actually useful.
    Also being out of the loop is a blessing. Most memes aren't funny unless you understand layers of internet humor and most news isn't relevant to you.
