  • 1. Interest - You need to have interest in human behaviour. "Sometimes my seniors used to say, 'You don't take psychiatry, psychiatry takes you.’"
2.working hours- The intensity of activity varies based on the center you opt for. It's important to prioritize your interest rather than selecting a program solely due to its demanding nature.
3.Is it possible to develop a mental illness if you choose a career in psychiatry?- Just as physicians can have diabetes, dermatologists can have acne, and ophthalmologists can develop cataracts, choosing a career in psychiatry doesn't necessarily mean you will develop a mental illness. This perspective can be compared to the advice your uncle gives about drivers being prepared for accidents. On the contrary, some argue that engaging in a field like psychiatry might actually reduce your susceptibility to certain mental health issues. This is because during your residency, you gain insights into your own behavior and acquire coping skills. However, there's also a school of thought that emphasizes the concept of transference and countertransference. In this view, as a psychiatrist, you exchange psychic energy with your patients, and they, in turn, exchange their psychic energy with you.
4.Toxicity at workplace-Once more, the level of toxicity often hinges on the specific institution you choose. Many centers tend to have a somewhat moderate to mildly toxic environment.
5.Career- Institutions like NIMHANS/AIMS offer DM programs in areas such as deaddiction, geriatric psychiatry, child psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry (NIMHANS). Moreover, if you desire further training in the UK, you can consider MRCPsych. Many other countries also offer promising job opportunities for psychiatrists.
6.Stigma- The Perception of Stigma and the Outlook for Psychiatry - From my viewpoint, there has been a notable shift in the perception of mental health since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conversations surrounding mental well-being have become more prevalent, particularly in metropolitan areas, indicating a reduction in stigma. Personally, having observed developments in the field of psychiatry for the past six years, I believe this trend is gradually diminishing.
    7. job opportunities and income prospects- I've noticed a parallel transformation in job opportunities and income prospects within psychiatry. Even corporate environments have begun addressing mental health concerns, reflecting a decline in stigma and an increased demand for psychiatrists. However, this transformation is still in its early stages, considering that our nation is still in the process of development. It's worth noting that in developed countries, psychiatry stands as one of the most lucrative branches within the medical field.
