They're actually the same promo models used back then rendered through blender and painted on using photoshop. The only "new" 3D model is the Gravity gun Gordon has. Pretty cool still though
I find it wild that Kleiner's lab existed back in 2000 and survived all the way till the release. They showcase models there. I just love how designer of crab synth was like "yeah, the thing wasn't supposed to move, they weren't able to animate it lolz so it was cut"
Man. Valve really hit the spot when it comes to preserving their games and updating their games. It's a miracle that Half-Life and Half-Life 2 still support modern hardware. Same goes for all the mods and games coming out of these two, maybe some GoldSrc games have been lost since they predate Steam, and that may have been for good reasons, like the game is just undesirable or something. No need for a remake or remaster when you can just do this kind of thing. The original will stay playable on any hardware capable of running Steam. Allows them to focus on either Steam or their completely new games. There is the dread that Steam will disappear or go to shit, I hope Valve never goes publicly traded.

Can't believe that HL2 has been out for 20 years already, it's been a part of my life for almost 8 years now, HL2 is what got me into gaming and mapping in hammer. honestly I wish I had someone to talk and theorize about HL2 lore stuff with.
The E3 2003 demo valve upload is the proper recording where the one that we have all watched many times before was captured on some shitty camera at the Half life 2 booth at E3 (no offence to the person who recorded it but just by today’s standards, person of the past, cameras are way better.)
This week has been really exciting for Half-Life fans. from Project Borealis to the Beta Megabuild that was released today. I'm just happy this community of a game i grew up on is still alive and kicking
As a fan of plenty of shows and games that are steadily getting older and will probably never be revisited stuff the half life community being so vibrant and active to this day is good for my soul
Slight correction about the beginning, Episode 1, Episode 2 and Lost Coast are still available to play in your library if you bought them, however for some reason they're now located in tools so you still keep your achievements, saves, ect.

What I really need is a side-by-side before and after going over each of the changes. My memory is rose tinted, and influenced by the VR Mod, so I can't tell at a glance when I booted it up last night.
Note that the episodes can still be found in the tools sections if you need to launch them separately (which i think you need to do to transfer achievements to hl2)

For the siggraph demo as someone who has worked a lot with gold source. This is definitely a updated gold source engine that they are using that they definitely later modified into the source engine. Super sick to see though,love seeing the changes.
Kind of important, Valve broke linux servers, so everyone running beta version. Go Properties > Betas > prerelease to play on servers that say old version (which isn't by accident.)
It was an astounding sight to see the free tvs thumbnail on Valve's channel yesterday. I'm happy that we got the documentary, update, and demonstration videos, but I still want HL3. 😂

I haven't tested it yet and for some reason it seems to be disabled by default but one of the biggest fixes to me is that they've finally fixed the issue where music won't continue past level transitions. This has always been really annoying to me because it's painfully obvious that the one Water Hazard level was originally intended to have the music continue over to the next map.
All theese features are better late then never for me. Ive been wanting features like this for years, and while im a little frustrated it took so long, im more happy there here now then never
Nice, was hoping you'd do a reaction vid for all this! I think your point about the Workshop is super valid. Hopefully it goes in a better direction than how it went for the Doom community, I think the idea of mods being a lot more accessible is nice, I've found a lot of people are so ill equipped these days when it comes to modding, so it's a bit of a double edged sword I guess. I just released the Alpha for my VTMB RTX Remaster mod, and some of the people I tapped to beta test it didn't even know how to open a zip/rar. So maybe workshop support would make that an even worse issue in the long term... The beta footage drop was a big surprise, very cool to just have that archival stuff out there and in decent quality. Also, 'dark and gritty' popped into my head while I was watching the beta footage, thanks for ruining my vocab, I've literally said that in meetings at work now.

far-z is the draw distance of rendering of fog that the mapper can set up. Valve removed from most of the maps, For example the helicopter fight map, You can see further and there is less fog too. I guess the maps that still have far-z is highway 17
maps like highway 17 just get that feeling from the fog. as much as less fog and more draw distance is good in recent games, the atmosphere created by high amounts of fog in old games is unmatched.

Far-z can never be removed it is literally the highest z value stuff can be at and not be clipped, your pc could explode if it was infinite... i think, i did some 3d graphics before so I know this, i assume you mean "valve set it high enough you can't see stuff being clipped in most maps" it depends on the camera not on the map... at least generally i never worked with half life.
@@hodayfa000h far-z is a setting on the fog entity. You can set a max draw distance, if not set the whole map depending on what visleaf allows to render.

Man, they showed like 15 seconds of freeze gun of ep3 and it's literally the coolest shit ever. And then they were like "yeah, we could do this, but we were like okay we don't want to do it anymore". Only at Valve: "we never release the coolest shit ever because whatever lets make something else".
Combining both episodes into the base game is cool and all, but valve turned eps 1 and 2 into Tools on steam and are no longer registered as Games. This ended up breaking a lot of games and mods that run using the episodes. Any Ep 1 and 2 maps loaded up in gmod or synergy no longer work, with the textures and models either being broken or gone entirely. Entropy Zero's AI is completely broken and nothing attacks me. I really hope this gets fixed soon.
There is one important change for me that no one can notice: the performance has become much better! After they ported the game to the new engine, the game was running much worse on my ancient PC. Now, everything is much smoother on high graphics settings
I did notice that in Point Insertion, you can't interact with some citizens as you could before, and some of them may shout "Hello Dr. Freeman", when they see you, but that doesn't make any sense, because they shouldn't recognize Gordon at that point. It's like playing HL2 maps in GMod. I hope Valve fixes that quickly.
The steam workshop being available for hl2 after all these years is both a blessing and a curse as it’s only a matter of time until it becomes as cursed as L4D2 workshop

1. Gman "go fuck yourself" intro
2. Half life 2 pp
3. Fart reverb for explosions
We had to put those there first.

The minute Rad said they combined the games I was afraid of this. I'm terrified to see what the various sourcemods I have installed will do...
This is how we played the definitive version.
