He is so freaking motivating! this guy has such a positive energie, everytime i listen to him i feel like brainwashed since i feel so strong and motivated to go on and chase my dreams.
Steve Vai: Your talent goes beyond just playing guitar! You are a teacher who makes other people willing to play! I wish I had you as my personnal guitar master!!😍
I've been playing (and listening) for a long time the thing I like about you best is your ENTHUSIASM ! Who wouldn't want to learn after listening to you....
Great advice Steve. Always use your guitar to play something new that’s never been heard before every time you pick up your guitar. That’s what I’ve been doing since I was 12 years old and I am now 45. Sure I dabbled with cover-bands over the years but trying to play other peoples shit always bored me to tears and it always felt like work. A musician should always be expressive of ones self even if you never intend to be a professional like yourself as I never intended to. Its the only way in my eyes. You and Joe have been my inspiration all my life and my name is Tim fuckin Haskins and never forget that! :)
Yes, they are still doing it. It is not free, but worth the cost for all of their online courses. Its always good to have some knowledge of guitar and they can teach you, it will change your playing. Good luck. Rock On!
Steve, wthat i just heard from you in past minutes watching this video is most inspirational stuff in a long time and i'm not talking about playing! greetings from Zagreb, Croatia!
I buyed two days ago for the first time a guitar and I'm waiting to get it tomorrow and now is this video here out... and steve vai says this great words... just AWESOME! =)
@BDPGT Disregard any age restrictions bro! You play anything you want and learn from any classes and/or teachers you choose. There is no age limit when it comes to your desire to learn. Rock on!
out of all the instructional videos i've seen, this is probably the only onewith stuff worth mentioning. These are the kind of laregly unspoken points that separate guitarists from people who own guitars
I played guitar for 20 years, I am tone deaf, but I can sing well, I now have no need to pick up a guitar and the thought of doing so makes me ill. The world does not revolve around the guitar. I liked you when you with David L.R. especially in the "Paradise Song" and in that movie "Crossroads" Your solo projects are a bit esoteric for me, I just like the "Paradise Things" Thanks.
vai is the jedi master of the guitar realm... such insight into a powerful and provocative passion such as the guitar is... simply brilliant reasoning and logic.we as serious players are along for the ride and he is the vehicle and sherpa in which an enigmatic journey becomes much less puzzling, and very suddenly attainable.. unraveling the tapestry and translating the protocol of fundamental approaches to this magnificent instrument is what its all about. now go!!! and be awesome!!
Very cool. Seems like a really good person. Some positive karma vibes broadcasting out of that video. I dig the message, enthusiasm and humility despite the inhuman talent. Always looks like he's having fun out there. Yes, the guitar IS the greatest instrument in the world.
Steve could tell me that I should be use a watermelon as a pick and it would be correct! Totally awesome! Thanks for the video Steve, some great info for beginners but a few nice little tips about tone that are useful for advanced players too
Steve Vai, one of five Guitar Gods amongst men that are with us to this day.. the other four are: Yngwie Malmsteen Jimmy Page Alex Lifeson Eric Clapton
that comment was AGES ago.. damn.. my "idols" have changed an asston since then.. new list in no order.... -SRV -Clapton -Knopfler -Joe Perry -Eddie Cochran
Love ya Vai So happy your giving lessons. Wow cool idea lets get you in the Guinness Book Of Records :O) Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and beautiful vibes. Lessons from the guru himself WOW :o) Great information and lesson.
Been playing since I was 12 (44 now) and never really gave much thought to "pick position." Thanks Steve! BTW been using the harmonic tuning all along and it's never let me down. If you don't have a locking nut, you may want to tune the string flat and then tune up to the correct pitch. Otherwise you may leave some slack above the nut and you'll go flat about 20 seconds in to the 1st number. Not a great 1st impression.
@Raz0rDragon It helps to really zero in on what you like to listen to guitarwise. My old teacher used to always tell us to imagine what we thought the perfect guitarist sounds like. As the idea crystalizes in your mind over time it will lead you into the right areas of learning for YOU. The guitar, like anything in life really, is a head game. Make it exist in your mind first & the rest will surely follow. Good luck buddy & remember to ENJOY.
I got to play a Jem 6 like that in the early 1990's...It was pretty strange since I wasnt used toa solid body, locking nut, fine tuners or tremelo ..guess I should have plugged it in..since they seem very responsive amped.
0:00 - 0:42: Steve Vai - The-One-Chord-Song =). ...wish I could play the guitar like Steve *-*!!! Vai, Satriani and Malmsteen...just motivating and a great inspiration!! I don't care who's the best :)!!
In the first 5 or 8 years that I started to play guitar, I never tuned with a tuner. And then I stopped playing the guitar, perhaps for that very reason. After a few months ago I got a tuner for Android, and tune my guitar with that, and really never thought it could sound so good. As Steve Vai said, that the first simple rule, and if you do not, really can sound terrible. pd: Googles translator made it. :)
yeah the guinness people are pretty strict and dont reply quickly. i sent in a guitar speed record but never got contacted on when to break it so i went to record holder republic and recordsetter who replied verry quickly and helped me get a speed record
Steve Vai I think you're a very neat person - most people probably are interested in your music - I'd say- I bet you have fun in the kitchen - I like the read I get from you kind of a kid at heart always - no doubt - mastered some areas of pursuits - but you're a fun quirky kind of guy - the music persona is badass but underneath - you're working on what the kids want for lunch - and to make it well- hey- thanks for ever sharing your offerings - - all about the kids- no doubt. your cool.
During tuning, those "vibrations" you're listening for are called "beat frequencies". Great Googly Moogly, Master Vai... How do you expect to get that honorary doctorate from Berklee if you don't use the correct terminology in your class room? Meanwhile, Does anyone remember those pink newsletters Vai sent out to the fan club many, many, many moons ago?
@Raz0rDragon Is there any guitar-based music that makes your spine tingle? If so, sit down (stand up?) and try to figure out how to play it. What made you want to learn to play in the first place? Maybe you just need to remember the answer to that question.
it's a rediculous question - crank up the distortion, have extra light strings, and shred. That's not difficult. Why do so many have the impression that shredding is technically problematic? I think it must be coming from people who have never held a real electric guitar.
I'm quite sure that, if Steve had a desire to play Freezing Moon, he wouldn't have any trouble with it. Freezing Moon isn't terribly difficult from a technical standpoint.
He is so freaking motivating! this guy has such a positive energie, everytime i listen to him i feel like brainwashed since i feel so strong and motivated to go on and chase my dreams.
7:18 VAI FLICKS YOU OFF! :O
M3RKMUS1C Merk!! Love you babe

Steve Vai, you are the true definition of AWESOME!

Not only classical players hold the neck like that. Every person that doesn't have freakishly large hands like steve does it.

Interesting lesson for all levels.

@halmjamin just checked, its $1200 if you don't need credits, which obviously you wouldn't since your not a student.
@guitarrosegroove I think this was from last year, maybe even 2 yrs ago.
@mattsmith0209 does it have to? its there for those who could appreciate it..
That would be great! But, whats your definition of "better"?
I'm quite sure that, if Steve had a desire to play Freezing Moon, he wouldn't have any trouble with it. Freezing Moon isn't terribly difficult from a technical standpoint.
Dude, where does he shop for his shades 0_0 He always has cool Italian looking sun glasses.
@DinoDyl your mind may give you some crazy ideas but its no good if you cant back it up with your hands
