This song is the epitome of 70s power pop. It virtually defines the genre. It was music written and played by the younger brothers of the classic sixties groups. You can hear the chiming melodic sense of the Beatles, the sunny harmony of the Beach Boys, and the crunchy power chords of the Who and the Small Faces. It has it all.
Yep, one of THE BEST guitar riffs & openings of all time. Add the lyrics, the harmonies & you have greatness!! He was a true talent & we will miss him. This is a tough one. Rest In Peace EC. 🙏
I read an interview with Eric Carmen who basically said the same thing that the guy in the video said: (to paraphrase) "I listened to a lot of great classic rock songs and combined them to make Go All The way".
IMO your guitar tutorial vids are best on the internet as far as quality and clarity and commentary. And believe me I’ve watched a LOT of tutorials. Thanks for the lessons!
Once again Andy you're right on the money; as always, and so accurate. If you want it to sound just right then it has to be done just right. Different versions of songs are not wrong but some songs cannot be altered. I've always loved the Raspberries....and I always look forward to your tutorials...just the best ever. Keep rocki'n.
I can’t even play a guitar, but I have always loved this song - it never got old. I couldn’t explain it actually - but watching I understand why. To me, it’s one of the best pop/rock singers ever produced. Timeless.
I agree," about it being to much,! Its like he took multiple riffs from other songs. Although how could you not love it? Brilliant recording,so catchy cool. Thanks for the review /Lesson. Jim K.
The most action-packed pop song I've ever heard. I tried to figure it out back in the day, and threw my hands up! Thanks for this lesson. Eric Carmen was musician enough to play this song on guitar, sing it, and chew gum at the same time. I saw him do it.
William Jordan - Carmen writes almost all his songs at the piano. He’s classically trained and composed the whole solo in the long version of “All By Myself”.
Outstanding tutorial on the Quint essential rock song of our time. TX for going over all the parts with detail. You play really great and this was very helpful. The hard part is now I have to sing it! Not an easy one but definitely doable! Eric Carmin has a great voice for both rock and ballads! Very underated musician. TX again and keepem coming. Bob
The opening d shape A chord your playing has these notes low to high a,e a c#, at the 12th fret an a shape a chord had these notes low to high a,e,a,c#, the exact same notes way easier to play, on thicker strings more tone, I teach guitar for a living, awesome song thx for doing this. McCartney's dad was a part time jazz musician and it shows in McCartneys chord progressions, Eric is mimicking rock jazz standard chord changes it's awesome and versatile
Great song selection, very cool progressions, and incredible break down. Happy to see that songs like this are appreciated and evidently still enjoyed by many. Thanks for this, and looking forward to many more.
I ran across this lesson when I was looking to play something completely different,, I learn it in about 8 minute watching you ,, thank you buddy ,, Keep those great lessons coming ,,, I have already suggested it by email to our band to play this one ..
Nothing I can add; great opening riff, melody, chord and key changes; just a great song with ear-catching surprises throughout. A tough one for guitar but once mastered it makes you stick out from others who play typical three chord rock. If you like this song check out the Easybeats “Friday On My Mind” and the Plimsouls “A Million Miles Away” for more Beatles-influenced music with musical surprises that takes practice to master on the guitar but makes playing worth it!
Once again........you raise the bar.....in guitar instruction videos.......great job.... I have a lot of work ahead ...of me..... to get this.....wishing you the best....
Great lesson, and thank you!! I just heard this song in the car, and I’ve always loved it. Especially that opening riff…..man!! Anyway, I turn 57 next week and I have nothing going on musically right now so I said I’m finally gonna learn how to play this. Not as easy as it sounds, but fun once you get it. Great stuff!!
Good job on the chord voicings. One small subtlety: I think he's playing most of those chords with upstrokes to give them a little more snap with the treble leading the strum. If you watch some of the videos you'll see this. ...yes in those days some of the "live" performances were lipsynced, but to my ears I still think the lead track was recorded with upstrokes.
thank you thank you thank you for doing this song! i've been looking for a definitive tutorial on this song and you do such great tutorials. donation on the way!
Amazing. I've been playing guitar (same Fender Jazzmaster, in fact) since 1961. You're lessons are excellent! But some day.... I wish someone would video the frets and chords and notes from MY point of view! From up top, looking down! You're way I've got to mentally transfer to what it would look like to MY fingers on the neck!BTW, I do a snappy version of the Beatles "Hold Me Tight" (since it was brand new!) and I'm glad you recognized it in Raspberries Go All the Way.
The reason the song has a personality disorder is because it switches back and forth from the perspective of the guy (the crunchy guitar part) to the girl (the mellow melodic part) and back. He's telling the story of what she said.
Thanks so much for this. I always wanted to play this correctly but could never figure it out. I sent you a few bucks for your hard work. Excellent lesson!
Another incredible lesson. Gotta say bud, you have the ear. Any chance you could take a run at REO Speedwagon "Back on the Road again"? Killer opening and solo from Gary Richrath (RIP). Always been a favourite of mine. Thanks!
Andy - "Great song selection, very cool progressions, and incredible break down. Happy to see that songs like this are appreciated and evidently still enjoyed by many. Thanks for this, and looking forward to many more." and, "Once again Andy you're right on the money; as always, and so accurate. If you want it to sound just right then it has to be done just right. Different versions of songs are not wrong but some songs cannot be altered. I've always loved the Raspberries....and I always look forward to your tutorials...just the best ever. Keep rocki'n." When you say bubble gum, I suppose that you are talking about the lyrics. My take on the song is that it has always been very inspirational, and very much a masterpiece. It has great writing, great vocals, and great instrumentation. The "Go All the Way' part of the lyrics, to me, is not immature, but very much the opposite, being a personal point in someone's life when his intimacy and everlasting love for someone, are realized at the same moment. Plus, can't get much hotter. Great song.
Good Rockin' Andy .... man you are good! (and you choose GREAT songs to share) thanks for that ;-) Lol, totally agree about the great intro and all the different parts...
So funny , we were just talking about this song how bad ass the intro and middle section is . My friend said it goes from Chuck Norris to Richard Simmons ... great song tho... would have liked to hear this band explore its heavier side

All that and more.
Infinitely influential
small faces is right
This song is in the holy grail of top power pop songs. A classic.
This lesson emphasizes well how what appears to be a simple song is actually a masterpiece.
Wow You got that right. Had no idea Great lesson
Several masterpieces, evidently.
You bet....how a Mid-70s bubblegum song is actually a guitar wonderland of chords and creative chord/ changes.
A very good guitaring song.
You're the Bob Ross of rock, really calm when explaining and making playing super easy Respects to u man
Hes the Bob Ross without the "Happy little trees" ...😉
This is how a guitar tutorial SHOULD be done. Awesome.
Walley Byrson.was a fantastic guitar player.Very underrated.Loved the Raspberries.
Greatest opening guitar riff of any song. Greatest closing guitar riff of any song.
Yep, one of THE BEST guitar riffs & openings of all time. Add the lyrics, the harmonies & you have greatness!! He was a true talent & we will miss him. This is a tough one. Rest In Peace EC. 🙏

You're so right about this song. It's Frankenstein, but in a good way!
This song has it all.
that hook in the chorus gives me the chills

Songs not singers - but Carmen was that too!
Thanks for the great tutorial. One of my all time favorites and perhaps Raspberries' best song.
The intro gives us all high energy and inhaling an exciting breath, great jam
I agree," about it being to much,! Its like he took multiple riffs from other songs. Although how could you not love it? Brilliant recording,so catchy cool. Thanks for the review /Lesson. Jim K.
Great Lesson!! Love the slight sidebar to Brown Sugar as well. 70’s music lives on!!!
Love that riff climb up in 4ths at 13:54. Great song.

Holy crap. I would listen to this and think it was some weird tuning or something and yeah just throw my hands up and just listen and wonder.
He"s not bad on keyboard either.
William Jordan - Carmen writes almost all his songs at the piano. He’s classically trained and composed the whole solo in the long version of “All By Myself”.
@@helengiallombardo4077 With help from Rachmaninoff!
Normally Wally was the one chewing gum LOL
This was a great tutorial. You captured all the intricacies of one of the greatest romantic power pop songs ever recorded. It has it all. Kudos!
Wow ! This shows it’s not just knowing 3 chords ... and I think we take for granted how musically inclined these artists were
Thank you for posting this video! I’m not a guitarist, but I was a big fan of the raspberries back in the day, and I appreciate it.
This is such a great song! It has elements from so many genres, and, is one of my favorites!

That little key change trick is a keeper, thanks, great lesson, I live in Northeast Ohio and remember this tune well.......

Great breakbown on a quintessensial rock classic! Thank you! Sounds just like recording and explained thoughly with detail! Outstanding!
Wow! Love the way the licks come in before the "hold me tight" section
I ran across this lesson when I was looking to play something completely different,, I learn it in about 8 minute watching you ,, thank you buddy ,, Keep those great lessons coming ,,, I have already suggested it by email to our band to play this one ..
Excellent tutorials by a very skilled guitarist…. Sometimes I get lost in the melody and forget the backing guitar… this is great
Excellent job on this! Thank you for spending the time on all the details of this!

What a great tune to learn. He was genius. Thanks for helping me get better. I need the help.
Once again........you raise the bar.....in guitar instruction videos.......great job.... I have a lot of work ahead ...of me..... to get this.....wishing you the best....
Great break down of one of my all time favorite songs! Thanks!
Got to learn this. When I was 12 it seemed so much easier on air guitar
Great lesson, and thank you!! I just heard this song in the car, and I’ve always loved it. Especially that opening riff…..man!! Love the history and insightful commentary you share. Thanks man..
You did great!👍 You got Wally’s voicings perfectly! Well done👏👏👏
Excellent lesson, great stuff!
This is a great song. Great musicianship. 👍👍
So tight! Lotsa bad cover lessons on UA-cam, nice to see one that is truly professional. Well done!
Absolutely Amazing Best teacher ever on YT
Such a great song and band. These guys started hardrock imo.
Thanks for this. Great song, great chords and fills. You have an amazing ear.
dgraja22 I
Excellent tutorial! TX for covering it all Very helpful! Sounds great! Thank you!
Parts of it sound like it comes right off of a 50’s soundtrack for the musical Grease. I am referring to the chorus. Very cool.
brother' you are by far invaluable to me thank you for all your work
There really is too many change-ups .But I love this song always have since I first heard it in 72! Thanks for the teaching.
I watched Wally play this song live alot..... He played it like he was playing a 3 cord song. A really great guitar player.
That part at 1:26 reminds me of that middle section in Let it Rain by Clapton.
Kudos on that B-7b5 before the chorus. Many like to just use a B- or B-7, but they don't hear the flat 5.
BMP

great song, great teacher, thanks. that arpeggiated chord phrase, ala and your bird can sing , badfingers babyblue comes to mind too.
Thank you so much for this great lesson! You are an awesome guitarist! 🔥👏
noticed that roadhouse blues lick after the first two chords on the A and D string...
The reason the song has a personality disorder is because it switches back and forth from the perspective of the guy (the crunchy guitar part) to the girl (the mellow melodic part) and back. He's telling the story of what she said.
Much thanks, always come to your channel if I want to nail it the RIGHT way.
Ufff.... Excellent! 👏🏻🎸🎶🎻
Thanks so much for this. I always wanted to play this correctly but could never figure it out. I sent you a few bucks for your hard work. Excellent lesson!
Grabbing that A chord again after playing the D is quite a feat, in the intro riff.
Top notch tutorial. Thank you!!
Great lesson!
excellent instruction!!!!!! many thanks !
Nice observation about it being 6 songs in one. One of the songs could be "Walk Away Renee."
?? Not really. "Renee" is merely 2 sections with 3rd part for the solo.
Another incredible lesson. Gotta say bud, you have the ear. Any chance you could take a run at REO Speedwagon "Back on the Road again"? Killer opening and solo from Gary Richrath (RIP). Always been a favourite of mine. Thanks!
First 3 beats with those chords and you know what song it is!!!! ❤️🎸
Thank you my friend, just a great job.

You always make me miss my Les Paul. : ) Love this song.
This song isn’t easy at all. Great job!
15:39 love this change.
Yes! Other than the main "rock" lick, that's my favorite part of the song. Very Beatlish! Cheers, Andy.
Beautifly done,thank you so much.
