I hope UA-cam removes the dislike button from this page, your solution hella worked. I didn’t think I’d get aromiswave games working. Every dc game I play works, but I didn’t get atomiswave until recently. Thank you so much 🙏
Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad it got things working well for you. I'm not too worried about the dislikes because I have a feeling it's from people who look down on using the serial adapter(due to its poor compatibility with regular retail Dreamcast games) and wanted a solution to work with their gdemu, mode, or even a CDR disc. So I don't necessarily hold it against them.
@@ENNEN420 Well, this is really only good for the atomiswave games and some Homebrew stuff. The vast majority of retail Dreamcast games don't work so good with this device.

Hello, many thanks for this. I only have issues with RD, it doesn't boot. and I had to update the IsoLoader to 6.6 otherwise I get a screen full of errors. Can you explain how to boot RD?
Once you have all the files dragged and dropped to your SD card, you just have to use the boot CD and select dream shell from the boot menu. it should then automatically load retro dream from your SD card.
Thanks, I just wanted to get this information out there for those who want to play these atomiswave games and not have to modify their Dreamcast to do so. Keep in mind that these adapters don't necessarily work well for all regular retail Dreamcast games since the serial port is slower than the disc drive. They only work good for maybe 50 to 65% of the library. I haven't done much experimenting with regular Dreamcast games yet myself as atomiswave was my main priority for getting the adapter.

Just bought one of these after watching your video, this thing is worth it for the Atomiswave games alone. Real Atomiswave arcade hardware and its games has gone up in price tremendously, especially Dolphin Blue which is arguably the systems best game. This will definitely help me get my Atomiswave fix for sure. Quick question though, have the issues with some of the Atomiswave games running through the serial port been rectified since posting this video?
The vast majority of these games all run great without any issue whatsoever. However, there are a couple that do suffer some minor issues because of the slow speed of the serial port. A couple of the SNK 1 on 1 fighting games stutter when loading in-between stages but the gameplay is still fine.
the serial port adapter kind of gets a bad rap because most people used this in the past to try to run regular retail Dreamcast games. Most retail Dreamcast games don't work well through the serial port or don't work at all but for whatever reason, the majority of the atomiswave ports work no problem.
@@Chris-Courage Yeah, I've heard of the inconsistencies of running Dreamcast games through the serial port. Luckily for me I'm not in it to do that, lol. Just Atomiswave, nothing much else. If I want to run Dreamcast games I'll either find an authentic disc or burn a copy. I bet one of the reasons the Atomiswave games play better this way than Dreamcast games is because Atomiswave games were carts and not discs. Discs can be kind of funky on occasion when ran through something based upon solid-state design unless its specifically designed for that purpose like a MODE/GDEMU or any other ODE for other consoles.
One of the worst offenders is Battle collesium. It stutters with video and audio when loading in between stages. KOF XI also does the same but it's not nearly as bad as Battle Collesium.
No problem, I figured there have to be other people out there who would like to play these atomiswave ports without having to remove their GD-ROM disc reader to do so.

You've explained this all so clearly and simply - thanks so much! To confirm, there is either no slowdown or minimal slowdown when using this method to play the Atomiswave titles? :)
For the majority of the games no slowdown is noticed at all. They're only a couple where very minimal issues can be noticed. A couple of the SNK fighting games simply take a bit longer to load in between matches and will kind of stutter a little bit on the loading screens. Gameplay is perfectly fine though. Faster than speed has very minimal slow down here and there but I only notice it when I'm really looking for it. All of these atomiswave ports run much much much better than retail Dreamcast games do from the serial port.
Look at Ian Michael's youtube channel here. He shows games running from the SD serial port in greater length than I so you can get a better Idea. ua-cam.com/play/PLnqOHvhr3p89PhFEnR0q_mD1jVAPzHTYV.html

But there was a previous adapter that did the same thing hooking up to the serial port in the back of the Dreamcast where if you are going to play a more complex game that requires more speed there will be slow down issues or errors because the serial port is not made for that high of a data rate
I'm not saying this adapter will work good for regular Dreamcast games. It does however work very well for the atomiswave games. The only glitches I have noticed is some longer loading in between stages on a couple of the king of fighters atomiswave games.
This is a known problem and if you have games like that which you want to play, then you're probably better off getting an optical drive emulator. Which is probably not a bad thing to have anyways as the drives will eventually die no matter what you do.

Hi. I copy all the files that you give to my 4g SD card but it wont work. When i put isoloader it make loading but some rgb error happen. I got a european dreamcast
i get stuck in the first menu showing boot from ram or boot from CD, i can use d-pad to select but no button selects the option. EDIT: Solution, i had to format the microSD card with 2 options in my iMac, with fat32 and also with "Master Boot Record" instead of "GUID Partition table"
Boot from ram or cd? I don't think those two options are on the boot disk I'm using. Mine just boots up with the menu shown in the video that has dreamshell, gens4all, snes4all, etc.... I then hit A to select an option. Start just doesn't do anything and makes the screen go black.

The Aliexpress seller never shipped out so I had to cancel and get issued a refund, I decided to go with a seller on eBay who was selling SD card adapters already (albeit no CD-R, given instructions said to burn it yourself). So I tried burning that boot disc image you provided with Nero Burning ROM at the slowest speed, since it was in NRG instead of the usual CDI for DiscJugglar. Just kicks me back to the menu, I decided to just to use a disc of DreamShell RC5 while updating the folder you provided on the Dreamcast-Talk forum post to an earlier version that was closest compatible since trying the boot disc for RC4 stalled at the Dreamcast logo. Feels like later versions are more dedicated for the modded IDE HDD solution, to which I strictly want to play Atomiswave through this SD card adapter as a strictly softmod solution.
The sd serial port adapter only works well for about 50 to 60 percent of the regular DC library. Other games either run way too slow or don't work at all. Works absolutely great for atomiswave stuff though.

@juanjoserivasgarcia2336 8gb is all you'd need. The games run very good for the most part. A few games take a little bit of time to load and metal slug 6 stutters a bit while played. But it runs much better than it does from CD. The best way to run the atomiswave games is from a GDEMU or internal IDE, but the SD serial port adapter is the next best option available.
@juanjoserivasgarcia2336 you're going to have to check the Dreamcast talk forums or the internet archive. Unfortunately, I had to remove the link per UA-cam rules.
From what I've read, there's some issue with the way extreme hunting was originally made programming wise that just won't let it work with the serial port adapter. Someone with much more knowledge than I would have to do a good deal of work to fix the issue. Any SD card 8GB or higher is large enough to fit the atomiswave wave games.
Very interesting video and congratulations. What I still don't understand, every time I want to change the game, do I have to turn off the dremcast and restart it? Or is there a specific procedure? For now I am waiting for the micro usb stick to not read data before turning off the dremcast. There is an alternative way to quit the game and turn off the console. Or does it shut down smoothly and this does not lead to hardware problems?

These are designed to work with the serial Port SD card adapter. They will probably also work with an IDE mod. They are not designed to work with a gdemu if that's what you are trying to do.
yeah, unfortunately something having to do with the way metal slug 6 was programmed, won't let it work with the serial port adapter. So the only options to play metal slug 6 would be either to burn a disc, or to get a gdemu or mode but those two require removing the optical drive from the system.

I’m noticing some sound stuttering in hokuto. The speed test seemed in line with the results other people have been getting. Have you noticed any sound stuttering in hokuto or other games?
More specifically, whenever you do many of the moves that trigger a voice line the animation stops for both characters whilst the voice clip loads in. I take it this is just down to the limitations of the serial port
I've only noticed minimal stuttering in Faster than speed and there's also some stuttering during the loading screen of one of the King of Fighters games. While the Serial port SD card reader isn't absolutely perfect, it's definitely a good option to play these games without removing the GD-Rom drive. Any model that can read a burned cd(CDR). As the boot disk required is on a CDR disc. From what I have read all versions 0 and 1 Dreamcast can read these discs. Some version 2's can as well but they have to be manufactured before a specific date. Usually best to test your system with a CDR disc first to see if it works if you have a version 2.

Wow, its like the PSIO but it's not held back by the creator being absolutely insane! Neat!

@@Chris-Courage I must be doing something wrong because my DC boots directly to DS and I get the DS menu..😢

Great video! I didn't know this serial adaptor was a thing.

@@Chris-Courage What are the ones that suffer "minor" issues, or were they the SNK games you were talking about?
Broooooo! This is valuable information. Fair play to ya

@@Chris-Courage Thanks for the update, it's really appreciated. That's my Xmas fun taken care of! :)

I wish they could do this to be able to play Naomi games and regular dc games (kind of like gdemu without having to open up the console)

Both options are available for this one on the dreamcast using the SD card adapter. Widescreen and 4:3.

I don't have a GD emu myself but I have also heard of some people having issues with certain games using one. While using this serial SD reader isn't quite as good as using a gdemu(when it works) it's definitely a smoother and better option than trying to run any of these from a physical disk.

@@xylose848 also, I should mention that some CD burners don't but Dreamcast stuff correctly. So if you make burn and it doesn't work, try making one from another computer. Also, set the speed of the CD writer at the lowest speed it can go.
Cris can you add more games to your post thanks
This UA-cam video is just about the atomiswave ports. Playing regular retail Dreamcast games is not recommended with the serial SD adapter as the vast majority of them do not run well at all.
I get a preset error ISO cannot be mounted.
Is that the error showing up on the Dreamcast or is this an error you are getting while trying to make the boot disk?
You take all the folders from the 7-zip file and drag all the folders to Fat32 formatted SD card. All files stay in their folders.
Also, once the Boot menu for the Boot CD loads up, you hit the A button on Dreamshell to load up retrodream from the SD card. Not start.
cool music btw
Thanks! I'm working on more chip tune covers but extra time for it has been slim lately.
Most the games are loading to a black screen ?
That's very strange. I never encountered that issue. I would suggest maybe trying a different memory card or setting the sync setting to a different number to see if that helps.
Actually, now that I think about it, I did encounter this problem once. fixed it by just reformatting the card and loading the files back onto it again.
Does dolphin blue get past the 3rd stage yet?
Yes, the game has been fixed.
Metal Slug 6 now works from the SD serial port and it runs much better than the CD version. Working on updating the link with an updated file right now. Will have today's date posted on the link once updated in the description of the video.
Games will not launch I get a configuration error
Configuration error? I don't think I've ever seen that before. Do you get to the retro dream menu?
Is it support 64gb micro sd card ?
Not sure, the atomiswave stuff only needs an 8gb SD card. I've used up to 32gb with no issues.
That seems awesome buddy, but for some reason I can't seem to be able to download the file. Is it something to do with the server? Has anyone else had the same issue? Thanks in advance and congrats on the fantastic work you've done!
Huh, never had any reports from anyone about that. I can download it here. Maybe try again later? Possibly the website/server is getting too much traffic?
@@Chris-Courage Hey again Chris :) I have been trying for a couple of weeks now and it only downloads about 300 megas of the whole file and I get a network error. Sad times! hahaha. Like, I have tried at all different times of the day as well.
@@semata2007 I'll upload it to another site and post the link tonight.
@@semata2007 Links have just been updated!
@@Chris-Courage You're an absolute star!!! Worked like a charm. Thank you very much for your time!
There a Lupin the 3rd game on there it's a rail Shooter. Surprise that wasn't on there?
I'm pretty sure that's a Naomi arcade game. If it is atomiswave wave, there's no mention of it being a port that's available.
no one has a loading time video :(
You mean as to how long it takes to load up games? Ian Michael ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=ian+michael+dreamcast+atomiswave+SD has a number of videos showing atomiswave games running on the SD serial port adapter. The loads times are actually pretty short other than for 1 of the KOF games. I can't remember which one but it takes a bit longer than the other games to load each match.
Where can I download these games?
If you are going to use the SD serial adapter then the link is in the description of the video. Otherwise, if you plan on using a gdemu then you will have to go the dreamcast talk forum.
@@Chris-Courage I finally received the adapter from aliexpress but I can't get any games to load except KenJu running via DS. All game names are kinda grayed out (instead of bright blue). Any ideas what went wrong? Thanks!
@@TylerDurden-tt3kq very strange, you're the only person I've had report that problem. Did you make sure to extract all the files from the download file first before dragging to the SD card? Still extremely weird that kenju works. I wonder if the boot disk included with your adapter is maybe an updated version or something.
@@TylerDurden-tt3kq I will test out the file later tonight and see if it somehow got corrupted or something.
@@Chris-Courage What should be the file size after extract? Not sure if using a mac to extract the files have caused any unexpected errors?
Download the link ? which link ?
The second link in the video description has all the files you need.
@@Chris-CourageThat link doesn't exist
@@abzhuofficial Unfortunately I had to remove the link and am not allowed to repost it. You should be able to find what you are looking for at the Dreamcast talk forums or the internet archive.
They've been running dreamshell from the serial port in CD for several years it does have lots of flaws. Some cases it's better to have a working Dreamcast and then one that is modded because those CD drives suck anyways SD card device you're reviewing with dreamshell it does have issues we're doesn't play certain games or the transfer rate of data is too slow
The sd serial port for whatever reason works extremely well with the atomiswave ports. Must have something to do with how the files are compressed. Obviously most retail games are a crap shoot if they will work good or not.
It's just better to get the Gd emu and then have a second Dreamcast that plays the discs as the GD ROMs are very problematic
Yes a gdemu is a solid option. This is just an option for people who want their system to still be able to use real discs. It's great to have options.
I'd use this to finally get the Genesis emulator to run on it. Years ago I attempted to get it going on my Dreamcast via a CD image I was given, but it never booted.
I haven't tested a Genesis emulator on the Dreamcast for quite a few years. The last one I tried the audio sounded absolutely horrible. I've yet to try gens4all so maybe it is better.
Metal Slug 6 now works from the SD serial port and it runs much better than the CD version. Working on updating the link with an updated file right now. Will have today's date posted on the link once updated in the description of the video.
Why? If you're going to use a Genesis emulator anyways, there are far easier ways of doing it.
The best Sega is the Master system .
Some games drop frames using this method.
They do but it's extremely minimal compared to regular retail Dreamcast games. The vast majority of atomiswave ports still run better on the serial SD adapter than they do using a CDR disc. This is a good option for people who do not want to take out their GD ROM and replace it with a gdemu or mode.
Yes but the games run slower
@@california6365 The atomiswave games on the serial port adapter do run a little slower compared to using a GDEMU. However, the serial port optimized versions actually run better compared to the CDR versions. This is most definitely not a good option for regular retail Dreamcast games.
But i believe the games run slower thats the difference
@@california6365 because of the way these games were optimized for the SD serial port adapter, there is very minimal slowdown in most of the games. They actually run better than the few CDI versions that came out. Obviously a gdemu will run everything better but this is still a fantastic option for those who do not want to take their GD ROM out of their dreamcast.
