Speaking of heroes, you are definitely mine. I was a born artist and well on my way with drawing as child and won quite a few competitions. I even got accepted to an art school with a submission of a sketch until they found out I was only 11 years lol! Anyway, my teachers and family members pushed me until I grew to hate art and I quit cold turkey until recently when I saw your videos for the first time. Now, at 38 years old, I have taken up painting. Teaching myself with your help of course! What an inspiration you are helped stoke that passion back up. Bless ya mate!

      Good advice.
With the exception of Bateman, those are mostly almost still life settings the painters do, with a little bit of action in them.
      You're right about art schools.
For realism, there are a host of unbeatable artists of past generations, from Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema (and numerous other romanticists), to Charles M. Russell, N.C. Wyatt, the old masters, the impressionists,....even to the "super realists" (which you seem to lean toward, but with a scenic romanticist bent).

Hi again from Canada 🇨🇦 Andrew (& Rachel)! Just wanted to give a HUGE shout out to you for being so generous & honest with your advice... you've become one of my heroes since I've come back to my artwork after a 5 year hiatus. I'm always so excited when I get your emails & can't wait to watch you vids to see what great info you have for me. I most of all I love that you seem to be my kind of artist... in the sense that you don't just paint one thing but whatever you ❤️ & want to recreate. Thanks SO much!!!

Hi Andrew, very pleased to watch this video. I am self-taught too as far as sketching and gaining line control. I was lacking in applying colors. Luckily I found an artist who was running Art Classes. I learned from him how to use oil colors. Actually, before joining this art class, I had no idea of oil color medium at all. I knew only about watercolors that I had used in school. You won't believe but my instructor told me he taught me all that he knew and in 6 months I had picked up so much that his students for 5 years were not able to grasp. And soon after that, we moved to the USA. My inner urge to do portraits was burning all the time, though I was working a full-time job, I had no time for my painting activity. The artwork of Raja Ravi Verma, the Indian painting artist, Renoir, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, etc were my inspiration. I used to have tears watching their artworks with the thought that when and how can I achieve such perfection in my portraits? And as you mentioned you need to keep on working and working and working to improve your artwork. I am so happy to notice that just by divine inspiration I was on the right track all the time. Thank you so much for sharing your expert views and tips for new artists. And of course, I learned a lot from your portrait videos too! Thank you.

    Spot on Andrew.
I am older, "pre-internet" and did go to art school. Then, promptly stopped painting.
Now I am starting all over again learning online and with artists who have to teach particular skills I need. (That and spending a LOT of time painting).
There are so many opportunities available around the world and online. If you like how someone paints, watch them, learn, maybe take a workshop. Really learn from those you admire. When you need a certain skill, you can go find it, wether it be color, brushwork, etc, you can find the instruction for that, and appy it to what you want ot achieve. My favorite part of your video... your statement about being responsible for your own education.

OMG. Robert Bateman. I saw his work for the first time my freshman year of college, when he showed at the National Museum of History in DC. I didn't know who he was, and I was blown away at the level of abstract detail, and how he reached a level of realism by using it. I never recovered from the awe I experienced. Later, after college, I met Robert Bateman in NC at a small show, and got snowed in with the crew, and ended up eating BBQ with him and having many great conversations about his work, art, and conservation. He told me his show at the Natural Museum of History(TMONH) was for the fact that The Hershporn National Museum of Art in DC told him he was an "illustrator" and gave him a definition for why they consider him as such, he argued that by their own definition, they described Michelangelo, DaVinci, and many other Renaissance painters they exhibit on a regular basis. When word got around, TMONH jumped at the chance to bring him and several others to show at their location. He was very personable, and I almost hate him for being more than the best role model anyone could ever have! I have many of his books, and love how he has changed my view of being an artist. Experiencing Robert Bateman was the only positive thing about going to college for me, I experienced many "exposure moments" while at school, but the "schooling" itself wasn't worth the money at all.

@@chuitonpere2324 I can tell why is it so difficult to get into fine arts school in Russia ... although I'm Polish and studied at one of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poland. But we had some students exchange from Russia and they were absolutely amazing! Not only they had amazing skills but the school taught them the craft of fine arts thoroughly and rigorously, no fluffing about, no conceptual arts (that's the trend in western schools) but the technique and craft of fine artists: drawing and painting. To get to the school one has to have an amazing portfolio for a start then there are exams: life drawing, still life painting - One has to be a pro even at this stage... So they select the best of the best... And in spite of that, there are always 7/8/9 people fighting for the place!
The Polish art schools have similar recruitment process, however, they become a little bit relaxed of what you do after your first year... The first year was also very strict in learning the craft - so lots of life drawing, still life painting, studying colour, composition etc... In Russia, they do it for the whole 5 years of study! That's why they are masters if it comes to craft... I was in an awe of those exchange students we had... We were even learning from them!

After art school I am learning so much more from failures, successes, videos like Andrew's, research, and hours of hard work every day. Absolutely keep those paintings around that you don't like and learn from them. Be open to new techniques and critiques from people you respect, always striving for truth, excellence, beauty. Good advice here!

Thank you so much for this conversation (that's how it felt to me), as I have been struggling with my fears about fulfilling my lifelong desire to be an artist. I have taken all sorts of art courses throughout my life, but have not been able to focus on any particular media. Outside of that, you're very right, the quality of online instruction, tips, suggestions, and just plain encouragement is simply amazing. It took me a long time to get past the idea that art was a talent and not a skill, but the sheer volume of information finally turned my head in the right direction. Thank you for your time! I’m starting out in colour. Most of my art over the last 35 years has been pencil black on white. I’m working with different mediums trying to find what I work best with. How I’m learning is taking one day to paint my subject several times. I’ve noticed throughout the day the improvement of each one, and sometimes the middle one or even the first is the best. I’m doing this to learn my mistakes and build on them. I agree, keep your mistakes close. Be objective. They are stepping stones to success!

Sadly, modern art schools seem to focus on a confused meld of originality and conformity. The mantra seems to be Do what no one has done before...as long as it's recognisable as the kind of innovative originality approved by the art scene and conforms to what everyone else is doing. No wonder young artists have nervous breakdowns! The bar is not set by artists but by art collectors such as Saatchi & Saatchi. They make art "great" just by buying it. A work by an unknown artist becomes a "must have" as soon the Saatchi Midas Touch has expressed approval. The work immediately becomes worth twenty times what Saatchi paid for it, the artist enjoys a brief period in the limelight until Saatchi sells it on (for a healthy profit) and, eventually, collectors realise that it aint so hot. Even schools like The Slade is now paying homage to this easy common denominator.
If what you endeavour to achieve is a period of fame and temporary commercial success, the art schools can give good guidance in wooing the collectors and provide influential contacts if it's the "right" school. But, if you want to develop as an artist, follow Andrew's advice.

Completely in agreement about art school education as I experienced in England. Thankfully got the opportunity to go on a student exchange for a year to a classical painting atelier in Prague in my second year which made my jaw drop as I walked into the purpose built Academy and was faced with Carrevaggio quality paintings in the studio. Yikes! I then had to set up my own little space, where I had to summon the courage from somewhere to start painting (after spending the previous term painting in household emulsion as directed by my English art tutor!) Anyway, it was after my degree in fine art was finished that I actually began to learn to paint, inspired completely by the dedication of the amazing students I'd found in Prague.
Love your honesty and truth telling. Many thanks Emma.

Thank you Andrew for this insight. I am self taught. Have been drawing from as far back as I can remember. Eventually started with pastels and watercolours. Then progressed to oils. Dabbling in acrylics for the past 12 years. In 1999 I joined a college and obtained an art diploma. I really learnt very little from the college but obtained A and A+ for all my exams. Like you say, find people that really mean a lot to you. I had my friend Louis Audie (now deceased) teach me his way of doing oil paintings and have never looked back. Thank you for an interesting and informative channel here. I love your work. Please keep on making all your videos. They help a lot.

You are right on the money regarding going to college for art. I did. Same thing, never learned how to clean brushes, or how to correctly use the painting mediums, whether oil painting or watercolor. Most of my class work was this: produce a painting a week and x number of paintings to complete a portfolio for grading. No instruction on techniques. I've learned so much more since college with videos, where I can watch demos of artists showing how to do these things (atmospheric perspective, etc) than just attending college classes and spending lots of money for a sub par education, just to have a "degree" in art. Thanks for being here.

Hey Andrew... I'm in the middle of getting to grips with the challenges of learning to draw and paint. I just found out about you some months back and I have to say I find your straight talking no-nonsense attitude in regard to what it takes to commit to learning and growing as an artist, a huge inspiration. You dont' romanticize or minimize the trials and tribualtions that seem to be unavoidable on the road to becoming an artist, and your able to this in a very positive and encouraging way. So, thank you for that! that. I'm still in the middle of the growing pains of properly leanring the fundamentals of drawing and painting. In fact I have found that learing about what is actualy the right stuff to study is a whole learning curve in itself. And yes I have found that I can get discouraged and disillusioned with it quite often. But somehow it passes. And I have to agree with you., the main thing that gets me over those enivatable attempts to descend into self pity, is to just get back to the easel or the drawing board, and just keep working. And yes you are right, there is no doubt about it, there is a whole lot of work involved in this journey, I find it far from easy. In fact, speaking for myself, this whole process is easily the most challenging endeavour I have ever undertaken, at a whole host of levels. Again, let me thank you Andrew for sharing your experience and insights. Please continue to do so. Its helping big time. Cheers and best wishes. Jason

Wow! I think these nearly 12 minutes of tutorial were the best minutes I've spent in my recent learning process so far, because I absolutely felt identified with all the doubts mentioned here an artist goes through, wether attending or not an art institution, and choosing our own heroes. It happens to be that we share one of them: The late great Thomas Kinkade. I did attend art school for one year learning the basic rules of perspectives, shadings and lightings, watercolour techniques, and color mixing, and some more aspects. It helped me to start with something, but as you said...you learn more by doing. Well, I can say that I just added one more heroe to my already large list: Mr. Andrew Tischler. Thank you so much for sharing and guiding us.

WOW. How thought provoking. You have given me the inspiration to carry on. I am just learning at 75 years young. I love it. My great grandfather was a master painter in the UK in 1880's. Charles Leaver. Landscapes in oils. He has always inspired me to attempt it. I'm not very good but love it and I ell try to do more. I love painting in acrylics. Thanks for you video.

Andrew, this is my 2nd message/post on 1 of your videos. The first was of how I came across the 1st just by chance & being mesmerized.... completely! I have since (over the past16 hours) watched every single video of yours I’ve come across, (absolutely delighted there are still more to see!) in this video you say “discover your heroes” well Andrew, without question Sir, you have become mine. You have lit a fire in me that currently burns very hot, very bright. Tomorrow I will travel to my closest city to purchase my first ever painting supplies. I’m beyond excited yet Im also remaining realistic of my abilities and inevitably outcome of my first painting. I’m a wood worker, I create & build very unique & custom pieces. I show/sell my pieces at numerous art shows through Ontario Canada. Throughout every show ido, I am told many many times that I am not a mere wood worker, but rather an incredible artist. I confess, I do enjoy when people tell me this and maybe, just maybe I’ve let their words go to my head..... just a little bit. However, after watching your videos, I conclude, with great respect for my clients, fans & followers, they really don’t know what a true artist is! You Sir, humble, perhaps even shame me? I doubt I will ever allow another compliment of me being “a great artist” go to my head, huh! My head! Those words won’t even reach my shirt pocket!!! I’m not sure if you’ve any interest in other “art mediums.” If so, I’d feel completely honoured if in a moment of personal boredom, you’d peek at my works. Easily found on instagram at “Robert Made It Boards”. Thank you again for sharing your amazing works, truly & honestly mind blowing! Yes Andrew,,,,, mind blown💥!

I also agree that seeking artists work that impresses you and then trying to emulate their styles and techniques in your own painting is a great way to get started. I decided to drop art school and do just that. At the age of 25 I was working full time as an artist. One thing though,,,having done a lot of private teaching since I discovered that by giving my students good technical information at the start they quickly reached a standard that I needed several years to reach on my own. I made many mistakes that they were able to avoid. So I would recommend anyone starting to watch plenty of your tutorials Andrew and invest in some of your detailed tutorials too
    !

I’m also self-taught and has picked up brushes three years ago when I was 60 years old. But, maybe “self-taught” is not completely true because I learned so much from generous people like you, who share what they know to us, who are completely at a loss in the beginning. I just begin to paint, and like what you said, discover and learn by doing. I have several books on art and painting, but was usually too lazy or too confused to dig through them. But somehow I continued to paint and learn from my mistakes.
Thank you, I’m a new subscriber and I found that your kind of works are what I’d like to do.

Hi from the UK. I am a pensioner and have dipped in and out of painting all my life. i did start college after leaving school to do commercial art but after several months there and not even picking up a paint brush I decided to leave. I have always wondered where I would be today if I had carried on but thanks to your video I see that I dont think things would have been different. Since retiring I have picked up the brush again and as I cant afford the price of the videos I find "you tube" is my tutor. I thank you for inspiring myself and many others to never give up and whatever or however the painting ends up enjoy the process.

I eat and breathe art and am also getting art education from people like Andrew. We are blessed to have this passion in our older years because there are so many seniors that have no passion and just seem to let each day pass. We are also blessed to have people like Andrew that share there love and knowledge of art.

Andrew is a true master and I can relate to so many things he say´s. I am a self tought Tattoo artist, going on 26 years now, from Iceland and just started painting a little over a year ago now, I have been watching Bob Ross videos and learned alot there but Andrew is teaching me so much more about details and layers in paintings and I need to learn that because that is what I do as a Tattoo artist. I only have one thing to say about Andrew... ONE LOVE

Agree totally 100% about what Andrew shared about art schools. I went to an university and got an art degree. But I thought what have I learned? Then a few years later I found a couple of online programs that taught the technical skills of drawing and painting that I had so admired in my favorite contemporary artists. These artists had training in classical realism and I realized this is what I wanted from my art training in college but didn't get. Later I discovered that besides the universities and art schools, there are ateliers that offered more specific training in drawing and paintings. If I knew about these I would had spent my art education with the one nearby me.

Great story and advice.. I never thought of what you said throughout.. but it is true of what I have experience it.. i am trying to find my inner experience and self to built up something in painting that I can able to do it and function with it and make it happens. I need to get into it, that is one of my problem of how to built it up. I have been to art school and several art teachers that approach me. I got inspiration when I was 4 and start painting. Somehow in my life, things throws at me like getting a job, get a technical degree so I can able to have a job but one thing is my passion in painting is still at the corner of my mind as I need that to make it comeback to me. That is my goal. Thanks for this video as it means a lot to me.

Andrew is so right here. You have paint, draw or whatever the media and technique you chose to master it. Yes, there is so much available online but at first when you don't know what you are looking for it's hard to figure out the way in the jungle of hundreds of UA-cam video and online schools. Some are waste of time and money and some are awesome but unless someone does the search for you, lots of hours might be wasted.
I started on my own just to as leisure activity and soon I had so many questions that I thought that taking night classes at our university might help. I took 2-D Design, and History of Western Art. I was lucky to have good instructors and I really like the vibes of working in a group of creative people. I work full-time and sometimes it's hard to motivate myself and find time painting. In a class I had to keep up with the projects and I had to find time to do it. Unfortunately, my financial situation changed and I can't afford the university tuition anymore. Also, it's been two years now since I started painting and now I know what I want and limit myself to follow online only a few of my favorite tutors and teachers.
I don't remember how I came across Andrew's website but he is now one of my favorite as well. He is so passionate and sincere.

What a great video! I am a wildlife artist as well as an illustrator , I went to an exhibit of Robert Batemans in Vancouver in the 80's, and I walked out a different man, I too knew what I wanted to do, the exhibit blew me away! Mr. Bateman ended up critiquing one of my first paintings, I learned more in 10 minutes then the previous few years!

Andrew, I really enjoyed your thoughts on the points raised. I remember talking with my younger brother once, who did go to art school, and he said "The best thing that happened to you (me) was you never went to art school". Now, he wasn't saying art school wasn't any good, what he was meaning is that I was not influence by any one teacher and from that I developed my own style. Love my work or hate it, when someone goes into a gallery that has my work they know it's mine. Also when I started to paint in 1993 thee was no UA-cam or avenues to learn like we have today, so it was all trial and era. For people starting out today they have people like you that they can gain information and learn from, it's a whole you ball game!

Love your remarks and the group of people I think it really helps are people who are already in a career or older and don't have time , money, availability to go to " Art " school . I am sure there are many that are discouraged by this when they need not be since as you say they can practice at home during their odd spare time that wouldn't fit into a college schedule and develop over a period of time with practice and internet help .

Thank you, thank you and a million more, Andrew! I have just validated myself with all you said. I was told to go to art school and I said no. I wanted to be unique and avoid being influenced by another and his/her style rubbing off to mine. But I too have my idols and find what I want to execute and what I want to drop. Getting there but like you said, it's a process that never really ends. The joy is just addicting and even better when a work gets sold. The high that one gets when someone asks to buy your work....

Thank you Murray for the question and thank you Andrew for such considered, thoughtful answers. My own piece of advice to anyone who found this video interesting would be, watch it back and make written notes. Consider them, come back to them and as Andrew said, learn by doing. There's nothing else for it. If you can go to school somewhere like Juliette Aristides Atelier seems like an incredible education. In lieu of that she has incredible books, particularly the last 4 she's released in the last few years. 2 brilliant books to get started sketching and then 2 books on Classical Drawing (w/ DVD) and Classical Painting. With Patreon, UA-cam, etc, online provides incredible opportunities especially in light of an ongoing pandemic. Good luck and enjoy!

First time making a comment. I have watched all sorts of videos some people doing podcasts. In the oil painting area. I started watching Bob Ross. I am at a Crossroads to where I decided to paint professionally. In order to get better I looked around. When I ran into Andrew Tischler videos. I was amazed with a couple of his paintings. And as I progressively watched more of his videos. I realized how smart he was. And I realized how much Integrity he had realize how much Integrity he had. And when it comes to teaching his words are amazingly easy to understand. But the most important part to me what's his answer to how to start painting, did he go to art school. Him and Elon Musk. Are my two modern-day Heroes

One of your artist hero's is mine also.... Bateman. I happened to chance upon him giving a talk about art and learned some of his colours he uses, which are simple but effective, and so I still use them to this day. Here is one that I use often, (for those wondering) a grey, greenish mixture = Prussian blue, raw umber plus a little Payne's grey and white used for shading, , snow, sky, etc. My other artist hero is Steven Hanks, whom has passed away. He became allergic to oil paint so had to teach himself watercolour and how to make them look like oil paintings. He is one of my inspirations and have studied his work. As with Andrew Tischler:)

What's working, What's not and What if? It might be really fun to see how these three questions apply to projects at different stages in the painting process. As a tattooer, I've applied these three questions to my design process and they've really stream-lined design refinement in my work. Thanks for the hours you put into these videos, Andrew.
