  • On moorland behind Rothbury, Northumberland practice trenches were dug by the 18th(Service) Battalion (1st Tyneside Pioneers) Northumberland Fusiliers in the winter of 1915 to 1916. Troops trained here before being sent to face the trenches in France during the First World War.

These trenches at Rothbury are well worth a visit. Still in very good condition after over 100 years.

Flanders was way different, the trenches were wet and cold, the land which was won from swamps centuries ago reverted as the irigation systems were destroyed and the yser sluce was opened
these trenches may look like the real thing, but would have been a breeze compared to trenchfoot inducing conditions in the real ones

Pretty good condition being over 100 years old; incredible to think that is how long ago that war was, and getting close to 100 years since WW2 (well will be 80th since Pearl Harbor attacked)

The total amount of trench and tunnel approximated the circumference of the earth, 25,000 miles. What horror it must have been building them.
