    All the Metropolis scenes were filmed in Milton Keynes in England, about 30 minutes on the train from London, but also a million miles away. I think the set-dressing budget stretched to a fire hydrant and a hot dog stand.

      @@prodigioussapsAlso, the scene with the arms dealers features not one, not two, but THREE Lex Luthors - Hackman, Cryer (from the CW Supergirl), and Porkins himself, William Hootkins. Hootkins played Lex in the BBC Radio adaptation of the early Byrne stories, The Adventures of Superman, which I beg you to check out.

    All of the Christopher Reeve films were made in England-that's why the kid in the town Zod attacks has an English accent, despite supposedly being the Deep South. And a mistake British people notice in the UN scene is that, instead of "United Kingdom", "England" is written on the name plate(England being one of the four countries that make up the UK).

    I've never seen it confirmed anywhere, but I think Cannon's deal was that they had the rights to the characters who appeared in the Superman films, but not any other characters who appeared in the comics. It would have made sense to have Superman battle Bizarro instead of Nuclear Man, because it is canon in the comics that Luthor was connected to Bizarro's creation. It still would not made the movie any better, but I would have enjoyed it a little more.

I watched it after watching your breakdown video today. I tried watching it on DVD a couple of years ago. But, the low budget effects were so bad, I turned it off eventurally. @@prodigioussaps watching the deleted scenes on the DVD is even worse than the finished movie.

  • @ThePlayTyperGuy
    @ThePlayTyperGuy День тому +3

    There is a deleted scene of a deathly ill Clark collapsing in his kitchen, before we see him desperately going to the deus ex machina (good thing he kept it at Clark’s apartment and not the fortress).
    The implication is that Clark is dying from radiation poisoning - the makeup is supposed to present an advanced case of this with his hair falling out and so forth, but it’s not done that well.
    For viewers who weren’t alive during the ‘80s or were too young to remember, this film came out during the height of the AIDs epidemic. Superman falls seriously ill after physical contact with someone and the illness quickly weakens and deteriorates him to the point that he’s a shadow of his former self. The writer of the movie said this parallel was unintentional but it really stands out in context.
    I also agree that the scene between Clark and Lois is really good. I have defended both Superman III and IV as bad Superman stories that nonetheless feature Superman. Despite the far greater budget, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman don’t feel like they feature Superman as a character I recognize.

    • @prodigioussaps
      @prodigioussaps  День тому +1

      Yeah, thanks for that -- neither of us watched the cut scenes for this review so we were just guessing in some places. It's puzzling to me that they cut so much from the film. The goofy first Nuclear Man stuff I get, because it was just painfully unfunny, but they also cut a lot of other stuff that I think would have made the film a bit more cohesive.
      Also totally agree with your last paragraph there. Superman in BvS especially seemed very uncharacteristically petty and cruel in the way he treats Batman at first.

      Yeah, those were minor nitpicks to be sure. Superman shutting the door I think was acceptable anyway, since you could maybe argue that's what the cosmonauts heard inside via reverberations throughout the hull. Great video! If you're down on Sidney J. Furie, I highly recommend one of his earliest films, The Ipcress File with Michael Caine. It's incredibly tense and visual, and his direction will blow you away. It's sad how poor Superman IV is, but what I find interesting is it does have its heart in the right place which is more than you can say for Superman III, and it flirts with superhero revisionism. The idea of Superman policing the world and learning the error of his ways is a good idea to explore, but the film wastes that potential.

    I'm not the least bit bothered by Superman talking in space. Super ventriloquism is a well-established silver age Superman power, one that goes along with his silver/bronze age super hearing. Basically, these powers, in the comics, don't require a medium for sound to travel from one point to another. With his super ventriloquism, he can throw his voice anywhere, instantly, and it isn't an optical illusion -- the sound actually originates wherever he's projecting it. The super hearing worked basically the same way. It isn't super sensitive hearing, it's like telescopic hearing in that he could detect a sound at any distance instantly.
    There's a bronze age story I remember involving the super hearing operating at basically faster than light speed. There's a kidnap victim being held at gunpoint somewhere in Metropolis. To save the victim, Superman sits very still and concentrates all his power on his hearing until he hears the gunshot, and uses his super speed to save the victim before the bullet can reach them. His powers violate real world physics in a dozen ways. I'm not going to draw the line at talking in space.
    I"ll take your word for it that S4 is terrible. I've never seen it, it doesn't appear to be available for streaming, and I'm not buying the DVD.

    Superman 4 is atrocious. Everyone from cast to crew to even the former Cannon owners call it an abomination. Just because today's movies may be worse in some ways doesn't change that. I felt this was the one film where both Hackman and Reeve were going through the motions.
    ( like what's up with Luthor's hair line? He went from bald to balding ). The Lois and Clark scenes felt forced, no magic between Lois and Supes. Jimmy Olsen was ok in 78, but the " young kid" aspect is long gone now. Jackie Cooper aged 25 yrs over a decade, Kidder's lifestyle started to show on her as she looks mid 40s here. Even the makeup work on Reeve left much to be desired. This was 1987 less than 10 yrs since the 1st movie . The set oiece for the Planet was literally out of a fan film. All the major role players look aged 20-25 yrs. Reeve certainly never stopped being Superman. But it's clear here he didnt want to be doing this. And the story, while topical of the day, and well meaning , was a mistake. Even comic book writers during WW2 knew enough to keep Supes from action in the war. Never mix hard to solve real world issues with characters who could solve those issues overnight. Or at least be creative about it. Even watching this as a 15 yr old it was off. The editing is just horrible, the missing 45 minutes may not of been top notch stuff. But its clear in many areas that chunks had been removed. It had none of the magic of One and Two, ....hell even 3 had good moments. And zero verisimilitude. Yes, I'd rather watch it over Snyder disasters every day. But thats not saying much. I'd rather have no anesthetic root canal than watch a Snyder movie.

      @@itsreallyme2706 Well it's a very weird sequel because although Superman still has the same dad, it's clearly not set in the same timeline because technology-wise it's 20 years later than it should be. We'll get into this in greater detail when we do the breakdown, but I think Singer should have either leaned harder into the sequel concept by making it an '80s period piece, or steered away from it completely and reset the canon with a new backstory.

      @ I absolutely agree, it’s like they didn’t want to pick a lane, there’s references to Reeves (Lex’s plot is the same but with the knowledge he gained in S2 and Clark and Lois’ son who could’ve been conceived when he was “human” but on the other hand like you said the tech is way out as well as some other small details

      when I found out it was a sequel to 2 I’m like but she remembers what happened and why does his son have powers when they conceived when he was human in this way the Donner cut makes more sense but then can he be with Lois if his not human so many questions

    I'm 41 and ss a kid, I watched Superman 2 and 4 the most, and I feel it was cause there was more fighting, I suspect. Superman 4 special effects didn't even really dawn on me at the time as being bad funny enough. I remember at one point in one of my many re-watches as a kid when Nuclear man takes Lacy to space... It just hit me like a ton of bricks lol...wait shes dead! The movie was never the same after that, and I started to notice more and more that was dumb and wrong with it as I got older. I would watch this movie 10 times before I would watch Superman 3 even once. I absolutely hated the 3rd one outside of him fighting himself as a kid. The 4th one holds a special place in my heart even though it's got a lot of problems, but the story just felt more Superman like, and there were some good intentions with it and even with it being a bad movie Christopher Reeve still made me believe in Superman even if the effects that made him fly looked like hot garbage.

      Yeah, despite its flaws IV does have some of the best Superman quotes, for sure. I love both of the speeches he gives, particularly the one at the end. And all his scenes with Lois (apart from leading her off the balcony and then wiping her memory AGAIN) are great.
      We didn't touch on this in the video, but the most hilarious thing about Nuclear Man taking Lacy into space is... where the hell was he taking her and why? It is one of the most puzzling things in the movie.

      @prodigioussaps 😆 so true... I often wondered myself where Nuclear Man was taking her and why. It was never very clear of his intentions with her outside of him I guess, finding her attractive and as you guys said a kind of a King Kong obsession with her which I thought was perfectly said. I'm going to go out on a limb and fill in the gaps... Mr. Pillow was taking her to Mars to make little nuclear babies. 😉 Either way, Lacy was right she was every guys type... even nuclear ones. Great job once again. You guys really do a great job!

    you’re talking about. This is the best superman movie . What was ever done? The technology in this movie was fantastic. The flying scenes were superb I really enjoyed this movie. I’d say it’s the best movie what was ever made? Not just the best superman movie what was ever made? a movie it should win the Oscars for the technology what was put in this movie

      Hey man, I'm really glad you dig the movie. I just can't agree with you, though. Some scenes are good, some effects are decent at best. But most of it, in my opinion, is just embarrassing. But again, really glad you think otherwise.

    Great reaction the things you do for your channel am I right? Well I hate three and four except for Christopher Reeve. I don’t think of real movies. I try to forget them. I think you should’ve done Supergirl. You’re supposed to be in a part of it and he didn’t do it. I think Supergirl is a much better movie than three and four. I don’t know whether you like it or not but it’s better than three and four not better than one and two but definitely better than three and four thanks for the fun until next time

      Thanks Curt! SUPERGIRL is coming next for sure, we've already recorded it. I'm not sure where I would place it in terms of quality compared with III and IV, but it is a very, very WEIRD movie.

Hopefully they have a classic member of the Justice league this time if they do it going forward may be much better universe much better DC way to come if they do all right they do all right I’ll bring super friends the cartoon not the cheesy first season but like challenge is super friends and dark side friends until live action version and make those justice league movies now that’ll be worse justice league two the challenge of the super friends versus the Legion doom I would watch that I want to see well there is one exception to the first super friends season they’re gonna bring them back Marvin and the wonder dog let him with crypto play with him. That would be funny for us seeing her too, and then have cyborg and fire storm say sorry Marvin and Wendy this is for real superheroes the winner twins could be used eventually that’s all for now
