    I’ve seen a bloke here in Australia mix lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint & lemongrass oils with some water and organic dish soap in a spray bottle to make a concoction to spray his cows with.

    I have horses and have tried a myriad of fly traps. Despite that we remove poop twice a day, the flies are especially bad this year. People mentioned that the traps are flimsy, I cannot agree. The material serves its purpose. You can bend the hook and the trap will not come apart unless you release it for a cleaning. The opening to clean is small, so I will add a piece of Velcro on the top... I find these the most environmentally friendly traps and they barely smell. I use cat poop for attractant which doesn’t cost anything… If the location does not attract flies, simply relocate. I have found that the best location is in semi shade here in southern Arizona.

    I got one of those last year. I put it by the front door. Worked good at catching house flies. Biting flies are a bit different.they are visually attracted. Those traps get more complicated and large, lol. I haven't tried making one yet. But this type is a simple quick way to catch the regular kind.
    On a side note, I feed my horses a garlic supplement which keeps most biting bugs off them. Might get a bit expensive for cattle, but perhaps someone has made a more economical version for cattle?

    Fun fact-flies are extremely attracted to coffee with powdered creamer. Try it sometime. Leave a cup on your table and watch how many flies drown themselves in the solution. Its crazy, but true

    Weve tried everything here in kansas and traps dont work. We tried bug lights and stinky traps and pesticides. The stable flies here are blood eaters and stinky wont work. Sticky glue traps work but have to be changed a lot. We broke down and started using cattle rubs with mineral oil and ultra boss pesticide. These flies cause problems bad with all the critters on our farm including us. Cant wear shorts around here. I made traps with cider, sugar, and baking soda that emits carbon dioxide and it worked but its short lived mix.

    • @angyles1
      @angyles1 2 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure if the flies you're dealing with would be attracted to this, but I got the DynaTrap a month ago because the yellow biting flies were TERRIBLE. You need a power source but man it works. I caught about 1 cup of biting flies and other flying pests (mostly biting flies though) in about 4 weeks. Just emptied it out and was amazed. You replace the bulb every 4 months ($10) and it's so worth it. I don't know if it'll work with poop flies though since it's not stinky.

    • @damienroser8004
      @damienroser8004 2 роки тому

      @@angyles1 that might work on these guys. They seek out blood meals like mosquitos. They look like house flys and bite your legs and drink your blood. Nasty little buggars and they hurt. Theyll be hundreds on my cows legs sometimes. They love the heat. The hotter it is the worse they get.

    • @angyles1
      @angyles1 2 роки тому +1

      @@damienroser8004 That sounds a lot like the yellow biting flies we have here in NE florida. I highly recommend this if you can get power to it. There's an initial investment but after that, I'll totally spend $30 a year to keep it going.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 роки тому +2

    • @damienroser8004
      @damienroser8004 2 роки тому

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer we tried similar with hopes and found out our flies are not interested in smelly stuff. These flies look just like normal flies but bite and drink blood. Its the devils version of what was just an annoyance fly. I used to spray pesticides all over the place and got very limited relief. I finally started treating the animals that were suffering. I found out they respond great to skin so soft but it would cost a fortune to treat all the animals. We deal with them the best we can.

      yep...you're totally right.....everything I do is wrong brotha.....sorry I only had critters get in the traps when I placed them near the creeks or edge of the forest...otherwise no issues. Look at the flies in today's livestream...they work...these cows had thousands of flies before....also moving them frequently helps
