Horror actually tends to have lower ratings on goodreads (compared to like fantasy or romance that tend to be very highly rated). I think this is due to the fact that horror isn't a genre for everyone, it's often not an easy read. I've been getting more and more into horror and I've leaned to take no notice of the goodreads ratings because my all time faves have been rated super low on goodreads. Bunny being one of them. And I've also seen a lot of people , youtubers and reviewers loving Bunny but I think it's just you have to get it. First time I finished it I knew it was one of my best books of all time but also that it wasn't for everyone and I didn't think everyone would get it.
Same with horror movie IMDb ratings. They seem to lose 1 star or more just for being a horror movie. I still use the star ratings, but adjusted for the horror penalty.
I think you would like 'Slewfoot'. It's so good and I think they handled the historical aspect well - though, I have to admit, I don't read a lot of books set in the American puritan era so I have very little to compare it to.
I think Slewfoot is definitely worth reading. I really enjoyed it and the female character was well written. The art is gorgeous. Imo it's felt more like a dark fantasy than straight up horror but most people consider it horror
I had a therapist that mixed up tumblr and tinder. He was so confused when I told him I was asexual and on tumblr a lot. He didn’t want to judge my life choices, so it was several sessions before things were cleared up. Not a pronunciation problem (he just confused the websites), but I thought it was funny.
❤❤❤ I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to watch your videos. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with Gooodreads/Booktube recommendations. Soooo many of the books have terrible endings. It seems that so many of readers are in it for the ride and the vibes of the characters. It’s almost akin to Soap Operas, where the plot & twists don’t have to make any sense and they’re just happy to keep watching. Thanks for being honest!!
I liked The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix. There was one point in the book when I was thinking, "He's not going there. He wouldn't go there. Please don't go there" while reading. He went there! I love a book that has me talking back to it.
Slewfoot is in my top 3 best books of the year! I read it in april and still think about it all the time lol. I'd recommend it for people who love the film The VVitch
“The Hollow Places” by T Kingfisher is one of my favorite horror books. I keep trying to find something like it! Absolutely wonderful Lovecraftian vibes with T Kingfisher humor. The woman is a genius
I loved Slewfoot! While infuriating, it shows how stupid zealots and sexist men are. I found it kinda cozy too with the main character farming and living in her cottage :)
Currently reading “Carrion Comfort” by Dan Simmons for the month of October. It is quite scary so far and Simmons’ writing style really draws the reader in. Enjoying it thoroughly! After that I’m going to read “The King in Yellow” by Robert W. Chambers, supplemented with “An Inhabitant of Carcosa” by Ambrose Bierce
I'd read a number of Simmons' horror stuff back in the day (Summer of Night, Children of the Night and Song of Kali) and they're great too. He's got some sci fi that's also good.
SPOILERS I hated that all her character's growth went out the window and she went back to the shitty ex... I know the witch was "bad" but she did call her out on her shit lol
@@BookswithEmilyFox . . . . . . . Yeah! I was worried when that happened too! But as I remember it, she realised she deserved better and left again and continued life as her witchy self without him? Otherwise I feel like I would have come away hating it too ahaha
Slewfoot is a great book, I think you would like it. Not on this list (and one I can't remember if you read or not) but if you haven't (and can deal with body horror) I really recommend The Haar by David Sodergren, I love most of his books but The Haar is spectacular and in my opinion his best.
Currently reading Darcy Coates' From Below - not far in yet but the vibes are making me uneasy 😅 Already read your favorites from the video - love Kingfisher and Barnes😊
Death Silence is on my TBR foooor hole year. The momenr I saw the cover and read the blurb I new I wanted it.[like german vover more than the english one] So I skipped your explanation for it. Nice that you did 3 rec at the end.
I think there is a difference between ambiguous endings where the ambiguity is well thought through and ambiguous because the author never figured out an ending.
I read three 5-star books this year and two of them are on this list: Slewfoot and A Certain Hunger (the third one is A Way of Kings). I highly recommend Slewfood, it‘s infuriating but really good folk horror. But I don’t think A Certain Hunger will be your vibe. It‘s more literary fiction with people munching than straight up horror. 😅
I really enjoyed I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast is Me by Jamison Shea. It's YA so it isn't a complicated read and it's not particularly scary, but it's by a Black enby author who uses the world of elite ballet to explore ideas of class, whiteness, gender, beauty standards and a lot of really interesting ideas. Plus eldritch monsters. I really recommend checking it out, I found it really fresh and unique and since it's a debut I am so keen to see where this writer goes as they grow.
I've got about 100 pages left in murder road and am personally really enjoying it. It's a slow one (it's giving me cozy vibes😂) and not particularly scary but I am invested in the characters and what happened still. Haven't read any of her other stuff though so that might help.
Emily! 📚Out of context comment, but I have to claim your attention just so you can have a chance at this Sci-fi book (Woman writer) recommendation: On the Origin of Species and Other Stories by Kim Bo-young. This is one of the greatest modern sci-fi (from 2021) reads I have had these last few years. I know you will appreciate it, and if not, I would love to hear your opinion! 🤍 hugs
All the modern horror books I've read, which I admit aren't that many, just aren't that scary to me. I've read Lone Women, Mexican Gothic, My Heart is a Chainsaw and its first sequel, The Institute, How to Sell a Haunted House, Our Share of Night, Imaginary Friend, The Girl With All the Gifts, and A Head Full of Ghosts in the past 2 years. And I just don't find them nearly as scary as I expect. Scary moments, but not that building and sustained dread that I've gotten from some old classic King (It, Salem's Lot), or even some Charlie Parker mysteries by John Connolly, which I find deeply creepy. I picked up Survivor Song at a used book store, and I'm currently reading the classic The Haunting of Hill House. I also plan on rereading Dracula (it's been years). Ah well, maybe I don't need to be scared.
SPOILERS I don't remember all the details but I couldn't stand the FMC... Instead of embracing her new life, she spends too long missing her awful ex... and goes back to him once he decides that his new life isn't as great as he expected (or maybe the new girl dumped him?). All the growth she had done goes out the window at the end. Okay the witch turns out to be a bad person but like... she made some good points lol
Bunny and Mexican Gothic were very good. I like this channel, but unfortunately I feel like I can't pick recommendations here anymore because most reviews are negative.
Slewfoot was the perfect revengefantasy of probably every suppressed puritan housewife and I like to imagine that their spirits got a bit of a reprieve from the terrible men in their lives through me reading and loving the book. :D Also I read a certain hunger this year and it was a weird one. I can’t say I liked the book, but I don’t think it is a book to like, you know? I mean the main character is a literal maneater. ^^ I have read a lot of bad reviews on goodreads and I can see their point, but I think that this is not the sign of a badly written character. I think it is a sign that this women is written perfectly. She sees herself as the most perfect, smartest, most gorgeous women who existed on the planet in probably ever. However her actions are often really very stupid. But I think this reflects a sociopathic narcissistic personality disorder pretty well. Every sane person reading this book should pick up on those things and find them odd and not matching the characters actions, because we are not mentally ill. So yeah, I think the book was written well. I hated the main character, as I think you are supposed to, but it was also kind of exhausting reading from hear point of view, so if you give it a shot be prepared. I gave it three stars, which in my mind is somewhere along the lines of „I had a great time while reading it” to “ I do not regret the time I invested into reading this book”.
With Silvia Moreno-Garcia, I wish I liked her books as much as I like the covers of her books😂. I read two of her books, and while I like the Mexican representation, that wasn't enough to keep me interested.
I might check out a few of these. I think I have Dead Silence ready to go in my kindle. Have to say, when I go by reviews, I am usually disappointed. Right now I have both The Silent Companions and Naomi’s Room, I am about half way thru both and have lost interest in finishing them. I want creepy, I want really spooky…usually I feel let down.
I read Mexican Gothic and it was ok but not recommendable. I'm am currently reading Southern Book Club and THAT is great and I'll read more of Hendrix' stuff based on this one.
Bunny is one of the few books I have ever given a hard DNF. I had really been looking forward to it but as soon as they started making extremely gross statements about mental illness I knew I was in trouble. I looked it up to see if this was something that was actually examined but it doesn’t seem like it was, and I learned that I also had racism and fatphobia to look forward to. Anyway, the more people who didn’t like it the less I feel like I’m missing out.
If you’re looking for a haunted house story you should check out the haunting of ashburn house by darcy coates. Is it perfect? No. But it’s cozy horror😊
@BookswithEmilyFox yes but after she returns and apologies to her friend, the witch that I cannot remember her name of 😂 and becomes a witch herself. She was really annoying with all the whining though, and I was sensing that she will return to her stupid ex if she had the chance because she was that type that will be feminist only when there is no man in their lives.
Ever since the 1st time you mentioned "Dead Silence" I'm curious to read it, but somewhere I heard that one character sees Ghosts or believes it at least ... Ghosts are absolutely not my Cup of tea, so ... Maybe someone can Spoil that for me?
I’ve read every single Stephen King and Richard Bachman novel. I’ve only not cared for maybe two. I guess I have a type…

I hate DNF'ing books, but I had to put down Incidents Around the House. I read so many reviews about it being the scariest book they've ever read, and how thrilling and creepy it was. I got about 45% into it and just couldn't take it anymore; the story is told from the POV of the 8 year old child, but I feel like it was just an excuse to get away with choppy writing and odd formatting for dialogue vs. plot. I was very disappointed, it was one of my most anticipated books of the year!
I just finished "Mexican Gothic" last week (what about it was MEXICAN?!? please? it even took place in an old ENGLISH countryhouse) and finished "Into the Drowning Deep" today, and that's probably my best book of the year so far, reading "Bunny" now
Hidden Pictures is the only book I hold a grudge against. I was also enjoying it until I got to the end. I was pretty mad and will never read anything else by that author. 😐😐
Am I the only one struggling to get through slewfoot?? I feel like it is soo boring and not really giving me any horror vibes either and I'm 200 pages in lol
I dont know if I trust a Horror list put together by goodreads 😅 I am baffled how Hidden Pictures won best horror the year it was nominated, that book was sooooo problematic in multiple ways, it made me so mad! I will never read from that author again. Incidents Around the House was bad too, but it'll probably win this year 😂

Yessss on Slewfoot. One of my few 5 star reads this year
The Reformatory is by far the best book on that list. A true masterpiece that I really hope more people read!
Try this one: My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite, short but oh so good
I was pretty underwhelmed with that one tbh, I feel like the premise sounds so good but just didn't live up to its potential
I have to agree. It was a 2.5 star read at best.@@MediocreAtBesd

One thing i liked about Mexican Gothic is how eugenics played a role in the story. I wish more stories played with that idea more
Death at morning house focuses on eugenics. Creepy YA mystery. It was pretty good.
@stephaniepasero3843 I will check it out, thank you 😊
Motherthing and The Eyes Are the Best Part were some of my faves this year! Cant wait to hear what you think if you get to them.
Slewfoot is definitely one of my favourites of the year - hope you give it a shot at some point 🐐

Slewfoot is fantastic, but infuriating for much of the story.
I'm not sure if that makes me want to pick it or not haha
what makes it infuriating?
@@NonAnonD the puritanical treatment of the main character and difficulties she has to undergo during the story.

I read Bunny a while back. I describe it as a roller coaster ride: I don't know if I really enjoyed the ride but it sure was something!!
