      I agree about short stories, they aren't as satisfying. If I read several all together they get jumbled together. I loved The Spell Shop, hope you enjoy it. I just finished Never Let Me Go, wow, now I'm having a difficult time settling down with another book. I need something happy.

    Emily, something that I feel isn't that well known but was a bingo for me is SIBO, and the test is mild and you basically drink something and then breath into a machine. Not sure it would make sense in your case but I feel like letting you know has no drawbacks. On the other hand, a big part of the diet is the same as during celiac disease, though I think even more harsh for the time of killing the extra amount of bacteria. Also, I truly appreciate you talking about colonoscopy, I feel like I'll need one for sure sooner than later and honestly everyone of us will need it one day, so normalizing the topic is so important. 💜

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  2 дні тому +1

    Booktok does have a problem with people not actually reading books. Rachel 0ates just posted a video about it where they literally say "I only read dialogue" or "I skip paragraphs if they're too long".

    For books about how humanity is not doomed to be rules in a hierarchical/patriarcal/capitalist way, look into The Dawn of Everything by Graeber and Wengrow. What happened to you during endoscopy is called "sédation consciente" and is now a gold standard in this type of care. I refused a colonoscopy a few years ago because I couldn't find a gastroentérologue who agreed to give me Propofol (in order to be KO) and ended up with an IBS diagnosis... 😅 Yeah, license to not do anything for you! 🤷‍♀️
    Happy this is behind you though...
    If you do end up with celiac, you'll know you haven't been through it "uselessly". But I do hope it's not celiac.

    Ugh, I went through a colonoscopy as a teen, but it was for nothing because they wouldn't let me pick up my own results as I was technically a minor and my parents didn't want to do it. My mom said if it was cancer or something important, they would call us.
    I hated the thing they made me drink all week and not being able to eat barely anything made me so cranky those last two days. They completely put me out during the procedure so I didn't feel or notice anything. One minute I was counting down, the next I was practically naked on a cot, in a hall full of other people in cots with their guardians. I felt vulnerable and exposed, my clothes folded on the end of the cot. The whole experience 0/10

    When I first read Riane Eisler's The Chalice and the Blade years ago, I loved it because it focused on how the dominator, patriarchal culture overcame the more egalitarian culture during the Neolithic period. It was more of a culture of the Mother Goddess--who was probably the primary deity. She came first before the male god(s).

So the book I won I totally didn’t want to read. Goodreads likes you to leave a review. I thought about not reading it and trying to cobble together a review from reading other reviews but I knew I’d never be able to write something that made sense by doing that. Don't feel bad about Ken Liu. I gave Grace of Kings 2 stars. He also translated Cixin Liu's Three Body Problem series which I liked, but I find Chinese sci-fi while quite ambitious and detailed, is generally a slog to read. Is it the translation or the writing style? Who knows. Another issue is that women rarely factor into the story and when they do the scenes are cringe worthy.

    I had the same procedure this past week. They do put you out here in the states so I don’t remember it. The drink they gave me was cherry medicine flavor which I loath cherry so that was fun. After I’ve been super crampy, I’m not sure if that’s normal.

      I’ve had two and was crampy for maybe five days afterward. If it’s really bad, I’d call the doc to check.

    I agree about reviewing books, but some people write full reviews for books they've not finished.
    Oh man, I feel you. I did not have a colonoscopy, but a more lowkey version but it was done without any painkillers and it hurt like motherfucker. In my case it did find the source of my issues and after waiting months for a procedure, they fixed it.

    I had a colonoscopy/endoscopy procedure this year too! I was out for it, but the papers I signed before said I shouldn't make any important decisions for the next 24 hours and included using social media in that caution. 😂 I don't have any specific answers yet either, but I hope we both get answers soon!

    I soft DNFed The Spellshop because it was putting me in a reading slump. Too many inconsistencies with the world building and I found the characters to be annoying and unfunny. (A soft DNF because I’m too stubborn to the DNF it ahaha)
