If anything, the Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command cartoon and its pilot movie (the latter which Andy owns on VHS) is actually the one Andy saw as a child back in 1995.

Buzz Lightyear was originally designed to be a cartoonish space hero, and I think it would’ve been better if he stayed that way. Originally, I was open to the idea of a serious Buzz Lightyear movie, but the movie takes itself too seriously for me to link it to the cartoonish Buzz Lightyear I grew up with.

If you can find it, there is a Buzz lightyear of Star Command movie. It has a Similar plot but it's done way better and its 2d animation.
Ngl, this movie reminds me of the Transformers War for Cybertron trilogy on Netflix. Has great ideas for a serious twist on beloved characters, but ultimately falls flat on being too serious to where it comes off as bland
I honestly didn't mind the movie. As a Toy Story fan, I'm fine with the cartoon lightyear being an Adaptation and overall separate character based on the movie to further the toy line so they can make more money in the toy story universe [just my headcannon]
If this was Andy's favourite movie, I'd hate to see Andy's least favorite movie lol.

I 100% felt this movie would be a lot better without being shackled to the Toy Story IP. It feels like an independent sci-fi story that Pixar realized they could make more money if they just skin Buzz Lightyear and Zurg over and so that's what they did. Now they had to deal with everyone's disappointment finding out that this was what they retconned Buzz Lightyear to be from when it really felt like he was from some pulpy sci fi cartoon akin to the Disney Channel show.

Gosh my family and I just rewatched Toy Story 2. And it made me extremely sad that they didn’t think to make Lightyear heavily inspired by the opening scene. I mean, the opening scene is funny, weird, adventurous, and had real stakes trying to infiltrate Zurg’s base. The entire movie could’ve just been based on that. But for some reason they wanted to make something that is completely new and really has nothing to do with Buzz Lightyear. It just makes me sad how lifeless Lightyear was.
Yeah, It’s like the marketing tricked us into being excited for this when it just rectons the timeline of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (both the movie and the show) and pretty much overlay this film’s timeline over that pre existing one. The Toy Story 2 opening and BLoSC was literally the late 90s to early 2000s Lightyear movie and show everyone have grew up watching. Lightyear is basically an underdeveloped Pixar-ised Interstellar with Buzz Lightyear lines and elements shoehorned in. Everyone got pissy for the two women kissing while everyone else was just disappointed and felt this movie was just a brand recognition cash grab. I can respect anyone’s options on this movie.

To be the fair, there's a point in Lightyear where they reach a dark blue area that I'm almost certain is based on the opening to Toy Story 2. But overall, I completely agree with you.
When I learned that this movie came out in the 90’s in the toy story universe, I was really disappointed. This was the perfect opportunity to make a parody of a 90’s sci-fi movie, and instead it’s just a generic kids movie.

This movie had so much potential at the beginning with the forced sadness during the time skipping and it was working but buzz barely even cared he dropped one tear after skipping like 60 something years and all his people died like he didn't give a fuck haha. They could have done so much with him time skipping, the consequences of that and time travel. Sox was the only saving grace through out the run time.
At least up felt more relatable in it’s emotional moments like you could relate to a loved ones death or dreams that never come to fruition

Lightyear isn't a failure cause it's "WOKE", it was a failure because it failed at being a Buzz Lightyear movie. Nothing this movie did was in tone with Buzz's design, preestablished lore, or concept. It was pretty obvious by the redesigns and trailers.

I agree that it works better as a short film. The beginning of the movie kinda feels like one of those shorts that play right before every Pixar movie in the theater, and I think it would have been better if it was just that.
Imagine Andy, a grown man whose finished college ''and doesn't know Woody has left the gang from Bonnie in TS4'' typing a review on a LetterBoxd style website that this is a disgrace to his childhood of playing with Woody and HIS Buzz Lightyear. The Zurg twist of being Buzz from the future is literally like how Rex was a grown cool/meaner Emmet in Lego Movie 2. Buzz variants be like a ''Not actually father'' and son talk and fight, Loki variants be fighting off while Spider-Man variants be like brothers in the best way possible.

I did that once, I went to see Ice Age 5 and brought my Mickey Mouse Tsum Tsum with me in my pocket (NOT JOKING YOU) after the credits ended, I went off out of my screening room and right at the cinema entrance I realized I left it behind, My dad did chuckle a bit as we went back to find it. As I came back in the screening room, Two workers who were sweeping and cleaning there and found the Tsum and gave it back to me and I went back out of my Cineworld and into the car. I remember hearing someone say that the movie should've been a parody of cheesy live-action superhero/star wars movies and now I'm so sad they didn't do that.
Two girls kissing isn't the issue. It's companies thinking they can put out some subpar product and expect everyone to cheer because it has representation.
Can you explain? I don’t understand. Not all representation has to be some grandiose thing. All that happened was a normal same sex relationship was portrayed the exact same way a heterosexual relationship would be.
Also it was critics that pointed out and harped on the representation, not the movie itself. Btw I’m just genuinely asking this because I’d like to get what you mean.

I do not understand why they made this movie at all. As a kid I remember watching the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command animated series and I would've loved to see those characters come back! That show also actually made sense for a kid to watch and enjoy (bright, colorful, fun, etc.), unlike this grey mess...

One problem I have with the movie is the tone. It is serious but then goes very goofy with the Rookies, and it actually kills the movie for me. The humour just sucks.
It should not have been about the Rookie's, if anything it should be the most SOLO story possible. About him trying to fix his mistake all alone, and learning the lesson ALONE.

Its such a shame the talent and effort of the animators was wasted by a bad plot. The animators clearly put a lot of love into the textures and all the lighting, but it wont be remembered because it was attached to a boring movie.
*FR!!* This is a similar situation with Ice Age 5: Collision Course, the talented animators that put a lot of passion for the animation have also been wasted by a terrible plot… I can’t blame Blue Sky Studios for that, because the heads of 20 Century Fox were the ones that couldn’t take Blue Sky seriously as a major animation studio, instead kept holding them gunpoint to make more Ice Age and couldn’t accept the none Ice Age related movies, which was sad. :(

@@Peasham If it was truly Woke, it would be Woke all the way through. Disney pays lip service but doesn't have the actual conviction to commit in ways that might damage profitablity in other markets. If they believed so strongly in The Message, it would indeed be a different movie altogether.
While I don't appreciate the sentiment of this message, I do agree that Disney's only doing it for the money. I'm a queer person (she/they, pansexual), and I can tell that Disney doesn't actually care. That's why the scene is only 2 seconds long and in a spot where it could be easily removed. I mean, we've got people like Bob Chapek running the show. Do people seriously think that he cares about human rights and equality? No. He's an old white guy who's never seen a titty in his life. He doesn't give a shit. It's only for the money. Hence why I go elsewhere for representation. With Disney, you can tell that it's forced and only for profit. Doesn't feel very nice and validating to me to only be shown when it's going to make somebody money.
Technically, it shows how far Pixar's animation has come. However it is also a show of how the inovative storytelling that Pixar is known for has passed. Disney has left it's four fingered handprint on the company in a negative way.
I will always be a Pixar fan, but they will never return to the quality they once had
I think the rendering quality is great, but animation-wise they went for a pseudo-realistic style that's much less lively and interesting than other recent Pixar films like Luca.

I think Pan pizza put it best, that light-year should have been a colorful campy sci Fi rather than a bleak sci Fi movie. Honestly that new Disney movie coming out feels closer to what light-year should've been

I honestly expected Zurg to be a result of the IVAN autopilot AI thing going rogue with how much they showed Buzz's distaste for it. I know the whole rogue AI thing is kinda overdone now, but I think it could have been a much more interesting twist than the future timeline thing if done right.

We're living in a strange timeline where a Minions movie is better than a Pixar movie.
Weird how I preferred Lightyear despite loving the Minions and Despicable Me. I still enjoyed the new movie though I just didn’t think it was better than Lightyear.
I was watching this film with my family, and in the scene just before Buzz gets captured, he says "I need to be with myself for a bit" and I made a joke to my mom when he was captured "what if Zurg is just Buzz so he'd literally be with himself"

Lightyear didn't feel like a Buzz Lightyear movie. Hell, I forgot that it's even supposed to be one.
It tries too hard to be a "hard sci-fi" movie of sorts. While it is honestly a good idea, I feel like it would be great if Buzz was light the more optimistic hero who struggles to preserve his positive outlook in the face of gritty conflicts and much of his character development can be him learning to adopt a realistic viewpoint while also maintaining his idealism.
Also, the twist is awful. And Disney should feel bad.
Buzz's character development was about moving on from past mistakes instead of fixating on them and beating yourself up for them, that was like the central focus of the movie how did it fly over your head?
They shouldve gone for a more retro sci-fi style, imagine the unique visuals and potential gags we could've gotten
I really liked how Buzz and Alicia were simply strong platonic friends, and that they normalised Alicia being married to a woman, showing that it's not a big deal.

My main gripe with the movie (and its probably been repeated to death) was that it was unnecessary.
The whole "andy saw this movie in the theatres and got the buzz lightyear toy because of it :D" just doesnt make sense when you realize that all these characters in the movie were never featured as toys in the TS franchise or even alluded to.
Ffs if theyre gonna have a cat robot as buzz's companion, then where tf were the green aliens in this movie?? The green aliens were shown as toys in TS 2 but the cat robot was never even mentioned or shown

The first 30 minutes sounds amazing, shame it couldn't last the entire time cause the concept of a back story to Buzz is a great idea, hopefully they can learn from their mistakes and make a better sequel latter down the line (and hopefully don't try to shoot for money from investors)
This movie bombed at the box office. It barely could make back its budget. All hopes for a follow up are dead after that. The best you'll get is a Socks short.

6:55 actually this sandwich scene could have been a good metaphor, the sandwich is different of what buzz used to know, and he has to accept the change, he was infatuated on finishing the mission, and didn’t realize that the people on the planet actually found a life there, they all accepted the change, except Buzz

This movie is a perfect example of what went wrong with the Star Wars sequels. They added a bunch of unnecessary elements, broke continuity, had plot breaking twists and is a mess of basic story telling. The original Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story 1 and 2 was a clear parody of Star Wars. His mission was to deliver information regarding Emperor Zerg's evil planet destroying weapon, and that Zerg turned out to be his dad all along. They could have easily made a movie in the style of the original Star Wars, animating it as if it was a real movie made in the 90's. The movie looks too advanced for the 90's in terms of special effects.
Socks is cute, but where is the merchandise for him in Toy Story, or any of the other characters? You telling me not one child wanted a Socks toy? R2-D2 sells like freaking hot cakes. The main plot regarding time passing slower was interesting, and the first act is solid, with Buzz trying and failing to make up for the mistake he made, but everything after that is frustratingly dumb. The side characters were unnecessary to the plot, besides Izzy maybe. The movie tries to be funny, but falls to the MCU curse. Star Wars was a space epic, the sequels tried to make it like the MCU, which is one of the reasons it sucked.
If you hate/boycotted this movie because of the 2 second long kiss between a married couple, grow up. Honestly I enjoyed the film, the science stuff and the sci-fi references looked pretty interesting, my only issue is that I felt it could’ve been a standalone movie, separate from toy story.

My main issue with this movie is that it feels too modern for a film supposedly released in 1995 (the year the first toy story takes place). The same sex kiss is a primary example of that since something like that wouldn't really be common in the 90s.
Honestly I agree. It doesn't feel like a movie made in 1995. I don't have a problem with the same sex relationship personally, as that was a thing back then (just more people were in the closet) but everything else didn't feel like it fit the era. Buzz was meant to be a cartoony and bright colored space ranger. This movie kinda sapped that life and personality from him and that's what made me dislike it the most. It's an insult to his character.

I remember when the trailer first came out, everyone thought this movie would be fucking amazing, myself included. But as time went on, more trailers and previews came out and idk why but it started to look more and more bland and mediocre and I ultimately decided not to watch it. And I can see I wasn’t missing much.

My perception has been that the backlash regarding the kiss has been over exaggerated. Of course there are some idiots who will freak out about that -
But my perception is that regardless of personal beliefs, people didn't like this movie because it just was not a fun, well written movie. They wanted Tim Allen. They wanted an adventure. It was boring to kids and adults alike.
Again, I know there are people who actually freaked out about the lgbtq representation, but I feel like Disney just used that as a scapegoat. It's way easier to accuse your audience for your failure than to admit you made a movie people didn't want to see.
Even if the kiss was the reason the movie failed, somehow, it was really unprofessional of Chris Evans and others to go online and rage about it. The best way to combat those in the wrong is to simply stand firm in the face of it. Getting enraged only brings you to their level.

You know what was missing from this film? A simple adventure with weird aliens, buzz befriending the weird aliens, a big bad bullying the little aliens and Buzz going after the big bad. There should have been a romantic interest for Buzz, there should have been multiple villains for Buzz and it should have ended with Buzz saving the day from the villain, setting up a sequel and have Zerg as a reoccurring villain. It's not that hard, it does need to be complex, just good vs evil, dramatic, corny. It's not complicated Disney.
I went to see this movie at the theaters and honestly...It was alright. It was entertaining enough for me. Call me weird but I personally liked the movie.

There's no way that Andy saw this movie. Why?
1.) It feels too much like it was a movie from 2022.
2.) There are no alien characters. I'm not talking about the little green ones from Toy Story, I can understand why they weren't in there. But all the characters were either humans or Sox. If you're gonna do a Buzz Lightyear movie, you need alien characters.
3.) The plot twist. The first time that we get "aliens" in the movie and it turns out to just be an older version of Buzz.
I actually believe that Andy might have just seen a Buzz Lightyear cartoon. There's even a deleted scene of Andy watching a Buzz Lightyear TV Show.
The hardest thing for me is that they’ve already done buzz light year of star command. I liked both versions for different reasons, but it’s always hard to reimagine the same concept. Especially because original Toy Story fans are your target audience, and most would be old enough to remember the spin off show.
The sheer depressing nature of continually going on a trip and seeing your friends get old and die as you try to save everyone, honestly feels like that Diary of A Wimpy Kid fanfic where Greg is a sad adult
1:16 To be honest I literally saw 2 or 3 people complaining about the girl kiss scene and they were mostly religious people... the other 99% were the media and social media making up stories that most people were angry about it
I disagree, the financial numbers prove that there are a decent amount of people who are not religious and they don't like seeing this stuff in kids movies. I am sorry, but the truth is that hurtful. I personally found that insulting. This movie failed financially because it was woke AND it had nothing to do with toy story. Even though the kiss lasted for only a second, nothing is wrong with me if i think that it was disgusting. Nick does not have the right to judge me like that. Unless he said that because it was a blink and you'll miss it moment that could have been worse, I can't tolerate even a smooch from two girls. It's disgusting, I stand with my opinion. Idk if it would have been a better sequence, but I was thinking, what if the movies plot was the team tries to get to the Turnip with the crystal, they get inside the shield, but they then get apprehended by the Sergeant, so they have to find a way to convince the people to leave, showing they need to learn to be rangers, while Zurg eventually breaks through the shield, but they manage to hold him off while they convert the Lazer shield to a shield for the Turnip, which gets damaged from the Zerg invasion, and the Turnip flies through the Zerg ship, but goes to space and becomes the Star Command Station from the Buzz Lightyear cartoon tv show

This movie seems to have fallen into the fate of Brave, which also started out as if it would be the most amazing movie ever, but then somewhere along the line its tone is entirely ruined.
Well, at least it’s nice to see somebody comparing Brave to another Pixar film instead of Turning Red. I’m so sick and tired of those Brave and Turning Red comparisons and most of them only worsen Brave’s reputation when comparing the mother-daughter relationship of both films.

Brave is a movie that started out as being about rebellion and rejecting status quo, before the mother turns into a bear that represents nothing.

I really wanted this as a movie but this is so bad that this makes no sense as canon, I thought Buzz would have been a real person in the Toy Story universe, like he was a real spaceman so when I hear of Lightyear I was so happy! but then when I watched it yesterday it was bad, In toy story 2 they say "when the astronauts went up, everyone wanted to play with space toys" So I thought the story was going to be about Buzz being a astronaut in the Toy Story universe and goes to the moon, but he runs out of fuel and gets drifted off course, he finds the aliens from Toy Story and Zurg arives when he tries to get off the planet, he kills Zurg and returns home 300 years after he left.
If Buzzlightyear and Zerg hated eachother because they knew eachother in lore. Wouldn't Zerg in Toy Story not want to fight Buzz since technically he himself is Buzz? Or am I looking too deep into a kids movie that was made years ago?

i genuinely liked it it was nice to see the connection to the toys themselves to see it all connected in such a subtle way even the beginning was exactly reflected to how he acted in toystory 1 or like who is zurg in the movies he is buzz's dad in this movie he is well or baseballs being plasma, or the robots or the running scene from the game in the toy story movies being reflected in this movie it was like seeing it all unfold to see what it was supposed to be and not the toy version even the wings, i did find it genuinely dark to casually leave his friends knowing they grow older and older though he was so casual about it like oh my friend is 80 years old now? well i'll go cya in a few years
i did not like the sidecharacters in the second part the so called comedic ones they weren't needed i was also so sure that zurg would be the army guy that took over so seeing the reveal was a plottwist for me they also did not kill him off if you watch the credit parts

Lightyear has the most laughable nightmare sequence in history, it's less than or equal to ten seconds and it's the most bare bones example of a nightmare in fiction which says 'buzz regrets his mistake when he crashed the ship' in the most on the nose way possible.
I don’t it qualifies as a nightmare. It qualifies more like a what-the-hell dream.

Even the popcorn was pretty crap
