Thanks for the overview. This is my first dive into the TechDraw work bench and it helped. Request: For future videos change the color scheme for better contrast in the program. The light blue on dark blue is a challenge for me to read.
Hi Forrest, thanks for you're feedback. You're absolutely correct - that colour scheme that I used was not suitable for some people. I made that video nearly two and a half years ago before I realised that it was a problem and have been making improvements ever since. I have been using a lighter colour scheme and larger fonts for some time now, so please persevere with my videos because you will notice improvements.
@@GlassonDesignStudio Thanks for getting back to me. I have watched a few of your videos in the past year or so (as I try to get to where FreeCAD helps me rather then slows me down). You have been helpful. I have not looked, but have you perhaps made a video or explained the user settings for the color schemes? Until I hear of TechDraw work bench earlier in the week I was simply making screen shots of my 3D views or the sketches and printing them to take to my work shop as an aid in fabrication. A poor aid they were too because not to scale and the color gradient background when rendered in monochrome hurt further.. Your video above fixed that for me. HURRAY!
I'm glad that you got some value from my video. No I haven't made a video about the user settings for the colour scheme. I like darker colour schemes because they are not so "blinding" in the darkened room which is my office/studio but I choose to use a lighter scheme for my videos to make it easier for people to see. The colour scheme can be set in the general preferences.
Great job! I am very new to FreeCAD in general but anxious to show dimensions on my simple diagrams. The WiKi is good but not enough. Your presentation helped immensely. Thank you!
Hi John, Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad that you found it helpful. Please let me know if you'd like me to cover something specific and I'll see what I can do.
@@GlassonDesignStudio Cool thanks. I'm moving from fusion so stuff like "where things are and how they work, would be a good place to start". I guess. I'm curious what errors you got. I tried it on 0.19 and it worked for me. I created the technical drawing, then selected all the parts in the assembly PLUS the technical drawing itself. I was then able to insert a view of the selected assembly. It worked the same for an exploded assembly,
I want to print complicated full scale drawings which are larger than my A4 printer for use as stick on templates. Alignment of the separate pages is tricky have you ever done this
Thanks for your question John. No I haven't done it before. I have previously taken a large format (A2) PDF file to OfficeWorks (an office supply store in Australia) and had them print it out for me. I didn't quite get the result I was after but it was close enough for my purposes. I would be interested to learn how you go with this, and would be grateful if you could leave a comment if you solve it.
Thanks for your feedback. I configured FreeCAD to use my template some time ago and can't remember what the default template is which makes it a little tricky for me to suggest something that might help. That said, there is a setting in the Scale tab of the TechDraw preferences that might help. That setting is called "Template Edit Mark" which sets the size of the green boxes. On my system it was set to 3mm. I increased it to 10mm today and the size of the box increased. That may help you. It should also be worth noting that my template was created in 0.18 and has NOT been updated since. The change mentioned above works in the templates supplied with both 0.19 and 0.20.
Excellent video. I cannot move the Detail circle till to the central tail. I can set like the maximum negative value of Anchor Point to x = -55. If I set -56, the Detail label in menu shows a red point and a warning label: DVDetail - detail area contains no geometry Till to x = -55, detail circle moves to left but it doesn't go beyond.
I think that the workbench gets occasionally confused about which is the X-axis and which is the Y-axis. I found that in some instances I needed to change the Y-axis value to get the detail circle to move in the X-axis in the technical drawing, and vice versa. Have you tried doing this?
Glasson Design Studio Yes, i tried doing this. In my case there is not confusion: if I change the X-axis coordinate the detail moves along horizontal; if I change the Y-axis coordinate the detail moves along vertical. The problem is that -55 seems to be the maximum negative value, and so the detail circle doesn’t arrive over the central tail.
Good question. According to the FreeCAD documentation, the Drawing workbench has been deprecated in favour of the TechDraw workbench. You should be using the TechDraw workbench to produce technical drawings of your designs because the Drawing workbench will be removed at some point - even though it may be available in your version of FreeCAD at the moment. I can't speak to the differences in the functionality between the workbenches because I haven't spent a lot of time using the Drawing workbench. I tried it when I made my initial switch to FreeCAD but found that it didn't really meet my needs (or perhaps I couldn't figure out how to make it do it), and quickly switched to the TechDraw workbench which did. I've been using the TechDraw workbench ever since.
Thanks for your question. TechDraw workbench templates are SVG files that you can edit in Inkscape. There's a howto on the FreeCAD website that talks about how to do it. It's been a while, but from memory I used it to modify an existing template - but that was in the 0.18 days so I'm not sure whether it is still appropriate in 0.19. I'll have to make a video showing how to do it.
As soon as I see your video, I can feel you are a PRO.

What is the difference between these two Workbenchs : Drawing Dimensioning & TechDraw?

In FreeCAD 0.19 (prerelease still), Detail objects have a doubleclick edit panel with a "Drag Highlight" button, making them rather easier to place.
Thanks for letting me know. I've started dabbling with 0.19 and plan to do an updated video once I've become more proficient with it
