I made this video because I wanted to make a online learning station that students could follow that would help meet the common core standards. I love the idea of blending online schooling into the classroom.

This is not only a great activity for teaching place value and expanded form but as my students were trying to do it ,they really had some great discussions about the value of numbers. I teach 4th grade and just making the cups taught the students a lot of math. It was easy to see the students who did not understand where the commas went and the true value of numbers. Some students really struggled the cups will help them! Just making the cups was a great assessment tool for me as a teacher.
Adults can get the idea after watching a minute or two of the video! With that said, it was NOT easy for the students. Some students got how to write the places and the values right away others struggled a little with the writing. Overall, it is worth the effort for the kids to have the experience of seeing the "real" value of the number.
The teacher needs to make a template cup for each student with just the digits on it. The students can not do this themselves unless you have an endless supply of cups. Late 3rd graders might also be able to create these. I wouldn't attempt having students try to make these younger than 3rd grade unless you do it as a small group activity that you can monitor. If you have youtube access, you could just play my video and let the kids stop and replay it as you help them. My students had a lot of trouble once we got past the thousands place. This was new territory for them. This is going to make teaching multiplication easier for me because the students will be able to see how to pull the numbers apart and multiply them. Students who are not neat will have trouble with this activity. Students who do not have could fine motor skills will also have trouble. DO NOT LET STUDENTS USE SHARPIE! It works great, but the fumes will be too much. My students have colored GEL pens and these worked great. Writing commas to mark the place value and expanded form under the hidden parts of the cup gets tricky for students. Make sure to tell students that one zero should go on each ridge of the cup. Students will want to cram all the zeros into a small area. Have a celebration when you get to a million. For high flyers, let them see just how far they can go with place value. HAVE STUDENTS WRITE THE PLACE VALUE ON EACH CUP AT THE BEGINNING. When I do this lesson again, I will start there! Good luck! I hope this video helps you and your students.

First of all if you are teaching place value, standard form, expanded form and trying to meet the common core standards this foam cup manipulative can help your students see the true value of numbers. You could even use this video as a cool math station if you put out some cups. I got 45 cups for a $1.00 at a dollar store. These cups are useful for 1st grade math, 2nd grade math, 3rd grade math, 4th grade math and fifth grade math. This could also be a cool at home week long project that helps students interact with place value.
I had students make these hands-on place value cups and it is really helping the students understand that there is a value behind the number. I think this is one of the hardest things to teach students with a place value chart that doesn't show the actual values of the numbers. I used this an introduction to place value and it really helped students to see the numbers
I did this place value lesson with my students and it really helped to teach them expanded form, standard form, digit and place value. It can also be used to show students how to DECOMPOSE a number into parts which helps if you are working on common core math skills.
If you are having students make these cups themselves it is a great lesson in itself. It is also a great lesson in following directions. I am working on adding place value activities and games using these cups.
Good idea to learn place value, standard form and expanded form. My daughters are also making some videos of math games when staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
very Good Job 👌👌👌

Awesome idea
Wow! This has really helped me in my Maths homework
I was hoping that the video would show how these are used after they are finished. Or is it more for the concept than as a manipulative?
Amazing! My students looked so confused when I spoke about expanded form. I am planning to do this with them this Monday. Thanks!

Great activity! I'm gonna do this to review place value w my 3rd graders this Thursday!
I need it
This video's is very nice
Superb!!!!!! Good creativity.....
Totally cool and affordable too. I think I would use a more durable cup to keep and use from year to year though. Dollar stores or IKEA has reasonable prices for cups. You could make a class set and put them in a center for practice.
nice creativity
