  • Today we visit Cass and Jowa Abrahams to discover some interesting facts behind the Cape Malays and their cuisine in Cape Town.
Cass talks about denningvleis in the video, it comes from 'dendeng', the Javanese word for meat of the water buffalo. The Cape recipe uses lamb and tamarind sauce, which gives it a lovely sweet-and-sour flavour.
Cass has passed her cooking skills onto her daughter, Shakira, who you can find on the cape markets under the banner of 'Spicy Cape Cuisine.'
As is discussed in the video, the Cape Malay people are not as most people assume, from Malaysia, but most have Indonesian roots.
Many thanks to Cass, Jowa and Shakira Abrahams for helping us to make this happen.
And heartfelt thanks to our production and editing team that work for mahalla to bring the joy to you.

Thanks Dion and Kim for interviewing a "Michelin Star" chef in my opinion 🙏🏽. People over the world uses Cass's recipes. Mr Jowa Abrahams was my "sir' as we would call teachers/educators in the 70's at Athlone High Senior Secondary.(Science and PT). Mrs Cass was displaying her culinary skills way back then.. Jowa's brother Sugary also had unique culinary skills. Mr Jowa Abrahams is a senior citizen today , but back in the day he was a briiliant rugby player and member of Primrose Cricket club. . A top team in the premier league after my team Victoria Cricket Club, (SACOS teams ) 😁. (my late father in-law Ian, was honored as Life president status). Hence we had a sweet/bitter taste on the sports field.. God bless the beautiful souls of Mrs Cass Abrahams and sir Jowa Abrahams 🙏🏽👊🏽
