      @Vo2maxProductions  4 місяці тому +1

      I was tougher in college....used to run in shorts until it was about 18 degrees or colder out 🥶. It's fair game in Colorado that any given month of the year it might snow on you over 10,000'!

    The heat took it out of me once the full marathon rolled around. I felt the lack of freshness in the legs around mile 6 so I knew I had it coming. Tougher course. It’s hard to pass up doing Pittsburgh two weeks before

      well it snowed in Colorado that week and I'm used to running in near freezing temps still and like 0% humidity....so yes, with the early start it was not "hot" but when that sun came out it was probably around 60-62 degrees maybe? and nearly 90% humidity. All I'm saying it is wasn't "ideal fast conditions"....for everyone!

    Watched and enjoyed your views on running, fitness and nutrition for near a decade now. You're a very knowledgeable and reasonable guy. Don't let SE drag your reputation down with them.
    Given the multiple testing results from multiple labs across multiple products (including Canaberry) and given that these results were not down small small %, but rather consistently down by more than half generally, this was not error - this was wholesale fraud. The current company response only serves to confirm this.
    I have been a sponsored athlete. I would not want to have been held responsible reputation wise for the fraud of my sponsor. In the case of such fraud however, it's extremely important for an athlete to separate promptly and clearly or reputation will be lost.
    Unsolicited advise from someone who's respect you have earned over the years but is totally done with SE and anyone who continues to support their dishonest business model.

    • @Vo2maxProductions

      thanks! To be fair it was more like "5 weeks of flatter training road/track with some targeted speed workouts" (I'm always training year-round and always have some element of aerobic base...even from skiing and doing the work before the Tarawera 100km). However as you can see from Strava the running mileage was a bit low this winter ast I am intentionally doing a slow build-up with ultras like Speedgoat 50km and UTMB 100 miler in the back of my mind for later in the summer. I also was doing a lot of vert and hill training on the treadmill (steep incline) workouts with MT. WA in the back of my mind....so #AnySurfaceAnyDistance !

    • @Vo2maxProductions
      @Vo2maxProductions  4 місяці тому +1

      I wanted to race before MT. WA and wanted a "lactate threshold check"....so half marathon. The timing worked well and the elite coordinators were awesome in helping me get an entry last minute.It's not too long or expensive of a plane flight either from Colorado. But another key main reason was for Sandi and I to go back and visit family. Her whole family basically lives in the Cleveland area and most of my immediate family also lives there now. So we got to spend a lot of time with family.. It's also cool to be running by the Rock n' Roll hall of fame and get some prize money and experience a big city road race again (that's not too big!).

    Half marathons don't get a lot of respect on the internet. Half marathons are the longest reasonably fast distance for lions. Everything falls apart in marathons.

    • @Vo2maxProductions
      @Vo2maxProductions  4 місяці тому +2

      yes I respect all distances! Some of the hardest events fro me have been 3km-5km races because it's right at Vo2max and the lactic acid flood at the end is super tough. Then a 10km on the track is also super hard mentally to run well at (it's so boring to run 25 laps!). Every distance is hard if you try to get 100% out of yourself.

    Congratulations Sage, i think thats a really great result given the training, course and humidity. Am I going to be crazy to suggest that an LA Olympic trails spot is still a possibility in 2 or 3 years? Im sure that 71 could go to a 68 with proper training, and then a 68 could get a 1:18.......It would be an amazing goal to have after all the hard times. All the best at Mt Washington!

    • @Vo2maxProductions
      @Vo2maxProductions  4 місяці тому +3

      The thought crossed my mind....but I think it's going to be a little bit of a stretch. If they hadn't lowered the OTQ standard from 2:19:00 to sub 2:18:00 (and I hadn't had my pulmonary embolism!), I for sure would go after it. But I think it would require me to give up mountain-ultra running for the next few years as I'd have to be 100% focused on just the flat road stuff again. Also, since they haven't opened the OTQ window yet, I'd have to wait until I was like 40 years old (time and age is not on my side for these "shorter and faster flat road events"). I think if I really focused I could get down to the low 2:20s again...but those extra few minutes under 2:20 have traditionally been really hard for me to shave off (even when I was younger and before my pulmonary embolism). On the other hand i love doing road events like this still and feel like I could probably jump in a lot more marathons and do some "fun" sub 2:30s pretty often.

    • @owkelly
      @owkelly 4 місяці тому

      @@Vo2maxProductions I totally get it. Dont give up the mountain stuff, just give yourself a 4 month crack at it when the time comes. Nothing to lose, even at age 40 !!! Given the marathon in Hawaii too I think you could be in 2:23-2:25 shape reasonably quickly with a small bit of training.

    Long course? Strava record stated 13.25 miles. Would account for the "slow"(!) time.

    • @Vo2maxProductions
      @Vo2maxProductions  4 місяці тому

      Any accurate cert course should measure "long" on a GPS watch. For example most marathons would register 26.3 or 26.4 miles. It would actually be alarming if the course registered only 13.1 miles on my COROS as I certainly did not run perfect tangents (a certified course will be measured on the tangent of any turns). Thanks though!

    Nice placing. You mentioned your lactate threshold being in the 160s since you can hold that for an hour. I wear a heart rate monitor and during my last long run I held a 170 average for two hours. Does that mean my lactate threshold is higher than 170?

    • @nberkel
      @nberkel 4 місяці тому

      If you're very young, then yes. It could also mean your HRM is inaccurate or wasn't reading right...

    • @gtromble
      @gtromble 4 місяці тому

      Depends on what was going on with your pace. Were you slowing down or struggling to keep pace later in the run? If so, then you were above LT.

    • @hibiru6868
      @hibiru6868 4 місяці тому

      @@gtromble Overall I was slowing down. I went out a little too hot in the first mile and then dialed it back. My pace was about 30sec slower per mile at the end of the second hour. It was definitely hard to keep pace though during that second hour, it was also very humid (soaked from head to toe as a result). I need to do a threshold test to see where I'm at - I'm glad that you mentioned pace changes because I'd forgot about that aspect.

    • @Vo2maxProductions
      @Vo2maxProductions  4 місяці тому

      Probably. The first thing is to make sure you are getting an accurate and real HR monitor reading though (chest strap or COROS armband strap is the only way to go imo). Make sure it wasn't reading cadence (170 is a common cadence as well!). But it's very likely your 100% max is much higher than mine (my max is like 177-176 only), so it's all relative to what % of max you are at (most people for lactate threshold will be around 85-90% of max....and yes that can't really be sustained for more than 60-min in an all out race).
