  • Powering on a 1979 White Westinghouse 5,000 BTU air conditioner for what's likely the first time in 43 years (yes, I couldn't count in the video). This machine is a AC057C7A2 with a reciprocating compressor and R22 refrigerant. I have the original box and documentation which I will show in a future video.
    What an incredible piece, perfectly preserved over the last 43 years. Unlikely the machines of today, it was designed with performance, longevity, and aesthetics in mind. It runs so smooth and quiet--and will continue to do so for decades to come.

    Gosh, I haven’t heard that deep compressor start up sound since I was a kid. My next door neighbor growing up had a huge in the wall Fedders air conditioner and when the compressor kicked on you could hear that sound loud and clear even inside my house.

      Sometime around 1967 our neighbors had central AC installed to their house (previously used huge Friedrich window units) It was a Lennox probably 3 ton. I mention all of this because we could not hear it start up if inside the house but the lights always dimmed when it started up. We shared a pole transformer with the neighbor and probably it should have been upsized.

    Even more rare,a thing that was never used is working 100%. Normally if an appliance sit for many years it wont work 100% you got really lucky with this one.

      @@KuntalGhosh I was actually using window air conditioners in my home back in the late 70's. A bedroom sized unit like this one was about $400. A window a/c for a living room or kitchen was about $700-$800. I am surprised that this one only drew six amps, though -- I would have expected it to draw closer to the 7.5 amps it was rated to draw. Nowadays a new 5000 BTU a/c draws about 4-4.5 amps (and the older a/cs seemed to cool better than an "equivalent" rated a/c does today). I do like the 8300 BTU GE "n" shaped air conditioner I recently put in my very large bedroom, though, it cools much better than the Arctic King 8000 BTU a/c I replaced although neither reduces humidity as well as the 60's-early 90's era a/cs. We will see how long THAT a/c survives.

      @@mharris5047 It drew only 6 amps because the air temperature in that room was 72 degrees. If outdoor air at 85 or 90 degrees was being blown over the condenser, the current drawn would have been about 7 or 7.5 amps due to higher head pressure.

    I absolutely love seeing stuff like this. It's great to know there's more like minded people out there, although far and few between, are saving the past and this incredible equipment we used to make. I believe that is a "rose wood" style finish, my 1986 Ford F-250 had a very similar design on the dashboard and was described as rose wood in the options. I haven't had any luck finding any reciprocating compressor machines, but I have found a few vintage rotaries that I will have to get video of. Love the channel Jordan, good luck on your vintage mission.

    I have two vintage whirlpool window units, they're in there 50's and have ran all there life, all one needed was a few ounces of freon. The bigger one that i have has a recip but the smaller one has a rotary but they both work perfectly fine. I have the big one cooling an entire shop and the little one cooling out camp house. I gave the modern units a try, yeah it worked but i didn't like it, I used to have a GE 22k btu window unit and the condensation on the coil got into the thermostat shorted out. Such a beautiful unlt. Looks very similar to Montgomery ward unit i have repaired for a friend. If it were me, i would not install this and use it as it needs to be preserved in its natural state. I have brand new 1977 sears cold spot 5000 btu ac thst almost looks like tnis one especially the front grille. All i did with mine was try it for a few seconds and i have it displayed on my dressor in my bed room, and i use it for a fan only. I disconnected the common terminal from the compressor at the thermostat. Even the csse on yours looks similar to mine. I do know Whirlpool made my sears unit. You are so lucky. Believe it or not there is many nos units like this just have to look in the right places. Many instuitions like hospitals, schools and what not will buy extra of these units, and end up not using them as they will get whats current today. So i know there are many of these sitting in the dark crying, take me home.

    I have a very similar Westinghouse unit. Mine is a 10,000 BTU unit, and it has the same finish on the front grille. Sadly, it has a Matsushita rotary. Mine has almost no rust in the pan if I remember correctly, but somebody ruined the condenser. I only can imagine they used a coil cleaner and did not rinse it because the inside half of the aluminum fins are destroyed. It still cools fine, but it is quite unfortunate that someone did that.

    LOL at all the comments about how great US made products were in the 1970s. It was in the ‘70s when exploding gas tanks (Ford Pinto) & melting engines (Chevy Vega) happened, & the US brands forever lost markets share to Toyota, Honda & VW. Even in appliances, there was a perception that the imports offered better value & reliability. This included HVAC.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  5 місяців тому +1

      There were certainly issues with some products, but not everything was junk. I would argue that much of the imported equipment from Japan was some of the best we ever saw, but there's no way one can say this unit is not built properly.

      Never said all US products were junk. You have a fine Westinghouse AC. But that one unit doesn’t reflect the overall state of US manufacturing quality. Don’t believe me. Read Consumer Reports reviews from the 1970s. Consider the fact that Sony & other Asian companies first started taking market share from RCA, Zenith & Sylvania during the ‘70s, to the point where American TV brands have gone extinct. In the post 1960s world, “American made” lost much of the luster & prestige it once held.

      @@SamWesting The lack of attention to quality is true: in fact, the world's top QC expert, W. Edward Deming, who had run the War Production Board during WW2, had to go to Japan to find work.
      But there were other causes for the decline: increased operating costs, particularly unionized labor, continued to rise. And the demand for increasing profits from the capital markets of Wall Street finally sealed the deal.
