Half-Diminished Chords: • How to Play Minor 7 Fl...
UA-cam needed someone like you! A good guitar teacher who actually knows all of what he is talking about, and knows how to resume it in shorts videos. Very very helpful. Keep doing what you do, because I just subscribed. c:
Man that's so good to hear Cristobal. I appreciate you saying so!
Just visited the ninth realm of music with Sean "dominant" Daniel...it was a good trip👍🏼
Glad you had a good time.
Man I've just got to say I'm glad I found your channel, so many useful lessons. I look forward to your future videos
Thanks so much! I'll keep em coming!
You just helped me make a breakthrough on music theory for the first time in many years! Thank you, I've been overcomplicating it. Also, love the tone of your guitar.
You're videos are always so insightful. Thanks for what you do!
Thanks for reaching out Carlos! I'll keep em coming!
Such a great lesson. Can't wait to work my way through this playlist.
Man! Your tutorials open up a whole new world to guitar playing! Thanks...wonderful tutorial as always.
I'll keep em coming my man!
5:27 by far the most useful progression you have ever taught!
Because let's be honest we all just want to learn how to use the 6 string find out "where it is going"
It's that easy :)
I liked it too!
Your videos are so helpful, thank you so much for putting the effort in to make them great !
Thanks so much for watching Collin!
You are an exceptional teacher Sean. Thanks for your lessons
Always happy to help :)
You have an amazing ability for teaching, and covering a lot difference material efficiently and simplistic
Thanks so much!
"the 9 is the same as the 2" Thanks for saying this. Most of the videos which show what the notes are in a 9 chord don't use this nomenclature but it's the easiest way to understand what the ninth is when building the chord.
Loved this video plus all the others explaining the chords to build off the E A and D strings
They sound great and importantly look cool to play and is SO important as I am learning :-)
Party on and be good to each other
If I remember correctly, Clapton used those quite a bit in his cream reunion while doing Stormy Monday. Glad you explained it so well!
You're right on, Stormy Monday is a great song to use dom9 chords with.
9 years for college, and still staying this classy? You're like my spirit animal! Bless your heart for all these amazing videos, and a request, could you make a video describing how you got into guitar or music in general?
Thanks man, I kind of answered that question a little bit in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/juIm1rT6JA4/v-deo.html
But I think I might talk a little more about it soon. :)
this is a damn good lesson man I already know about the 9th this is still helpful tips.
Thanks so much!
Congratulations Sean. You managed to do that lesson without mentioning James Brown ! The 9 was staple diet for him and his band. As usual great class.
Thanks so much Alan!
You are changing my life!
And a lot of early rock songs actually end on the tonic chord converted to a dominant 9. I love that sound. e.g. Twist and Shout.
Great example!

Welcome to the party!
great vid, awesome theory. Much needed
Use it wisely :)
Here's me adding another 'You're the best guitar teacher on youtube' comment. You really are.
Thank you so much Anirudh! I really appreciate it!
a good teacher....nice
Fantastic explanation! Thank you :)
Happy to help Matt!
These lessons are great Sean, thanks for all of the uploads! I have been self taught since I was a teenager and now am trying to expand my chord library. Can I ask what gauge strings you use on your Taylor? They sound great and have awesome flexibility.
Love this chord! Would love to see a video tutorial on the bit from 5:08-5:55. The 1 to 5 chord, I think it is EMaj 9 to B dominant 9? Love the strumming and words too, lol, and would love to see a break down of that.
I play sierreño music . but man I just love learning some new chords for different types of melodies .. Awesome just awesome..
Thanks for watching!
Best opener yet
Wow.. felix ur really good at guitar 🎸
Subscribed!!..learned a lot thanks!..
+Gerardo Lozano welcome to the party!
I would love to see a video where you explain in depth the type of stuff that your are going through at 1:36 . Why is it that the 5 chord is able to be a dominant 9th? Would it break the "rules" if I played a different chord as dominant 9th? Finally, Is there any practical way to use 7th and 9th chords for improvising or spicing up songs that don't typically have them?
Great question David. So the reason the 5 chord is the most practical place to use a dominant 7 and 9 chord is because that chord requires a 'flat 7' to build it. The way it works out is that if you take the notes of a scale but start on the 5th degree (so in the key of C let's take the G) you end up with the exact same 7 notes of the major scale for that particular note, with one exception, a flattened 7th. So the difference between G and C is the 7th note in G is an F#, where C has an F.
Now even though it would technically break the 'rules' to play it anywhere else, it can still sound great, you're just borrowing a note from a different key, sometimes it works , sometimes it doesn't, you just have to experiment and see what you like. So don't be afraid to try it anywhere and see what happens!
Muito bom!!! mesmo sem dominar inglês, aprendi muito!!!
well done. subscribed !
I love your channel, it really helps me 'hear' things Ive been listening to for years with fresh ears- is the dom 9 the funky "Crunge" chord from led zep 5?
Really good ear! Technically I believe Page is playing the highest 3 strings on the guitar, which would definitely line up with the dom9 voicing from the video, but I don't think he's playing the A and D string, so if you want to technical those are like higher voiced minor, minor 7 chords BUT when combined with JPJ's incredible bass playing, when he hits the root note there are times when both players are combining to get more of that 9 chord sound you're hearing. :)
I know you've already responded to this comment but would still love a video on strumming: how to practice and such!
Yes! That's coming soon I promise :)
Great video.
Thanks as always Lee
Thank you sir
Hello! What is the best way to easily transition from a CMaj7 to a barred D9? I've been having issues changing back and forth between these chords. Thanks for your videos!
And again your video made me feel smarter than 9 minutes ago. :)
Always great to hear Gustavo!
GOOD SHIT BRO!!!! THANKS!!!!
+Audio Fella Happy to help! Thanks for checking it out!
Excellent
Thanks for watching!
Awesome 😎..... Thanks
..... Can you pls suggest a solo using C9 chord it's really necessary for me ...pls let me know
.... Thanks Sean
Just found your channel and subbed. Good stuff. Are you going to go over suspended chords as some point?
For sure! I did one like a year ago but I think I might actually revisit it soon, let me know what you think:

A very clear and great tutorial 👍
When explaining a dominant 7th chord by building up the notes from a major scale.
Would it not be worthwhile stating that the dominant chords' eg G7 etc, isn't a chord built from the Key of "G, It comes from, and is therefore built from, the notes within the Key of "C".
Just a thought.
Ha. Thanks for being so easy to watch
Theyre great for resolving on another root. I immediately hear a resolution on an Emin7 even though it's G major. That's just the jazz in me.
Right on man, it's cool how different people interpret resolutions differently. I'm a big fan of resolving everything on the 4 personally.
Really? Seems like a 4th is unresolving. In my ear at least. It seems like its gotta go one way or the other. I like to solo on a 4 chord though for sure. Mostly for tension.
Man, you have taken my guitar playing to another level. One question here....how do you use the 11th and 13th Chords?
God bless you
Thanks so much Geoffrey! I've actually been meaning to make vids on 11th and 13th chords! I did one on minor 11 if you haven't seen it:
ua-cam.com/video/l7vsoPbaFS8/v-deo.html
That's better my mate!! Back to doing what you are best at .....
My bread and butter :)
Yes, and for the benefit of grateful people like me .....

Happy to help!
these intro jokes i swear each new video i watch has a better one omg
Thanks so much! I try!
Hello sir
Can you please tell me what's the difference between dom. 6th chord and Dom. 13th chord
Thank you
Nice pick up line..hahaha!!! "Hey girl hows it goin"
Tried and true!
i wanna learn how to recognize the chords used in song.
can you help me sir ...$$
Great question, I'll start making some ear training vids.
Trying the barre technique at 2:28 but I can’t stop my middle finger from muting the 4th string. Is this a common issue when first learning the chord?
Same problem 😢
Ohhhh Donna, ohhh Donna 😉
+Thomas Valencia :)
Could I imply other notes??
like a 3rd, or 7th?
good lesson thanks Sean..oh your beard looks good now...old man..lol
Haha, the beard has its moments :)
Ok, tension I get it. Cool.
Use it wisely Leo!
Skin Blues by John Frusciante 👌
The master!
2:20 I’ve been trying that chord shape for a while now but those barred notes make all my fingers go flat and mute the second note.
You'll get it.
Same here. I can barely barre it with my pinky and get the 2nd note to sound.
What would this be without the flat7?
my brain is gettin bigger and smarter thanks to Sean ...but it hurts.
It'll be sore for a bit, but you'll survive :)
Great video, but hold on.. why is an E9 chord the 5 chord if Emaj9 is the 1 chord? So confused.
Well E9 is actually shorthand for Edominant9. The dominant chords are always the 5 chord in any key. So like in the key of C, G9 would be a dominant chord you can use, etc. Major 9 chords can always be used on the 1 chord. Hope that makes sense!
Kinda... but what key is that progression in? If the 5 chord is E9 then isn't the 1 chord A? Not sure how the 1 and 5 chords are both variants of E!

Great vid Sean!
The mark of the beast!
You should use the c major scale it is much more easier and more known
So did she ever show up? How could she resist with that Beatlesque song you wrote for her ha ha? Good info here thanks.
Thanks Mike!
Is someone still a beginner for learning this, or an amateur or something? (I'm not a beginner; I just want to know what y'all think.)
Maybe describe the chords as "Pretty woman"? Especially when you broke it into an arpeggio.
Definitely a good example :)
1:30 "so if we take all the notes from the key of G and apply it to the D..."
You had to go there.
Sean Daniel ;)
Bakit ba
You look somewhat like Pewdiepie
i don't understand what he's talking about.. but
Only one chord was explained i wish we would give a comprehensive list of dominant 9th chords😒
Maybe I'll make another vid!
The only complaint I have is that you talk to fast. It could be that I can't listen fast enough. 😁
Not that its your fault, but this made no sense. How do you remember all of that?
all your videos on out ther chords are great. keep making these non conventional chords videos ur like the only one i watch for the way out there chord videos. :)
Thanks so much! I'll have another one out soon!
ya sean youre the shit bro and a real chilled out dude
