Surfing Storm Swell in the OC1 -- Wipeouts, Ama Carnage, and Good Times

- Barry and Rod recently sat down over an avocolado smoothie and reviewed the footage of the day Barry took his outrigger canoe a bit too far inside --- and paid the price. Literally.
After waiting out a pretty intense late October thunderstorm, we headed out to paddle down through Masonboro Channel and back up the ICW. But as we passed Masonboro Inlet, we couldn't resist taking a peek on the outside, just to see the conditions.
Next thing we know, we're OC surfing big slabs outside the jetty and having a blast. Right up until the time Barry's ama suffered major damage, took on water, tried to escape and...well, you watch the video.
Sometimes, if you're going to play, you have to pay -- good times! - Спорт
Thanks guys, for those of us who like holoholo pau hana in Hilo out & around jetty, this is great fun and leash reminder.
Thanks, Hualani! We've envious of you!
Easiest way to remember leash is keeping one attached to your boat...(not stored unprotected - so no UV concern)
That's pretty good advice!
Thanks guys, I borrowed your thumbnail title on today's vid.
Take care and God bless!
Oh no! Sometimes we have to pay to play --- can't push the boundaries without finding the edge sometimes. Looked like fun, though!
I broke my ama in a similar way a few years ago. Now I avoid the reverse huli at all costs. Now I grab iako and huli away from the ama if there is any chance of this happing again. Thanks for sharing this video. I don't know about you, but I learn more from my mistakes I ever learn from the things that go right.
Dana & Sherri Outrigging & Kayaking that’s for sure! Thanks for the comment. Let’s paddle!!!
When I’m surfing my canoe and encounter a dangerous situation I do the same thing. I grab the back iako and self huli to the non ama side and hang on. I used to wear a leash until it got wrapped around my neck on a wipe out. Then I heard horror stories of leashes cutting canoes in half in waves! Now I surf my canoe a lot and the self huli thing works so well, I’ll never wear a leash nearshore just surfing waves again.
One day I hope I can make it to hawai with my Proa to go paddling with you guys!! This looks awesome!
We're actually on the U.S. east coast in North Carolina, and this a great place to paddle, with a little bit of everything to enjoy. But paddling in Hawaii sounds great!
Take me with you (to Hawaii). We filmed this video in NC. Where do you like to paddle??
Im in Hawaii come paddle with me
Howdy, Have enjoyed your videos--especially some of your rough water stuff outside the jetty. I know you've got the Kahe Kai. I'm about the same size as you and am considering the KK and the Ares. Have you ever tried the Ares and if so, your opinion?
Jocko, Barry might be trying an Ares today. We'll see if it happens and what he thinks. There are a bunch of paddlers around here (Wrightsville Beach) who love both the Ares and Kahe Kai.
I paddled the Kahe Kai again today on a downwind run and boy was it fun!! The volume of the Kahe Kai suits me very well at 195 lbs and it has never bothered my hips or back at all.
I owned a Kehele for about 7 months and I think it surfs downwind even better than the Kahe Kai, but the Kahele bothered my left hip to the point where I decided to sell it and paddle Surfski a while to balance my body out. In hindsight, I wonder if I was running the ama too light on the Kahele, and thus leaning on my left hip all the time to keep from flipping. Nonetheless, I sold it so I’ll be looking to purchase an OC1 again soon.
Surfski has really helped my body balance out, and I plan to continue to paddle Surfski 1-2x per week even after I purchase another OC1. I think the rotational paddle technique in the Surfski has really helped my core strength, hip flexibility and balance.
My buddy was in his Ares today. He tells me that it is a very comfortable boat. Like me, he used to own a Kehele and sold it due to hip pain, in his case he couldn’t get the seat back far enough. He still has a Kahe Kai in addition to the Ares. He tells me that he feels a bit faster in the Ares and likes it a little better in the bumps than his Kahe Kai. When I asked him if he were to keep one, which would he keep? Without hesitating, he said the Ares. He weights 172 lbs but I have noticed that plenty of bigger guys in Hawaii paddle the Ares so I don’t think you or I would be too big for that boat at all.
Personally, I have yet to paddle the ARES but will take him up on it the very second I am offered the chance. I definitely want to do this before buying one. Stay tuned, hoping to paddle it soon.
Check out Kainoa Tanoai’s instagram. He’s a big guy and paddles the Ares.
Can you share what kind of mounting system you are using to mount your GoPro?
Thomas, We took a bicycle inner tube rubber and used it to attach a broken paddle handle to the llako on the canoe. We then used a clamp to put a gopro camera on the end of the broken paddle handle.
Where did you get your ama repaired? I paddle the area and don't know anyone that does repair.
