- Huntsville, Texas: Breakdown after 125 executions. Very powerful scene from Werner Herzogs documentary "Into the Abyss". Introduction: Interview with Werner Herzog (3 days before releasing the film / DP/30). Interview with Fred Allen, former Captain of Death House team (Huntsville, Texas). Excerpt from Werner Herzogs documentary "Into the Abyss", Part V "The protocol of death" (2011). Watch the entire film (107 minutes) here: • Video
He lost his ability to judge them for their actions, murder, but could only see them as human beings.
One of the most intense interviews i have ever seen, what an amazing moment to capture on film
This guy, his eyes, what he said, that was moving.
You'd expect the same of any murderer
Even for the most pro death penalty folk, you cannot deny that this man has a perspective that you never will.
@Matt Beeman Oh, I am sure he did.
@goldlinks Yes, but many criminals are just high level manipulative psychopaths who convinced those captains/officers that they could be rehabilitatable or they are good inside etc. I guess the perspective of the captain is - there are human emotions towards some of those people once you get to spend so much time with them. But most of the time those people just toy with captains/officers but it could be very hard to see. And if you look at the statistics and see how many of the criminals who were set free , committed the crimes again, it would not be difficult to realise how malicious they really are and how dangerous.
@Matt Beeman What if there are hardcore evidence that the person is guilty?
Very true
If killing people is the best way to teach people that killing people is wrong then it's ultimately failed.
Its outdated. In the American south there are a lot of extremely religious and narrow minded people. They enjoy the whole killing thing for revenge. I don't trust the government or police. So I don't trust them to execute people the right way even if they deserve it. I'm only ok with the DP for child molesters and rapists. They cannot be rehabilitated. I think 25 years to life is plenty enough for murder. 25 years is so long. It's long enough for someone to truly reform if they take advantage of the resources in prison. And many do.
The prison system should be to rehabilitate but it's not. It's big business and part of capitalism.
The main reason they want the DP is MONEYYY. The appeals process costs taxpayers millions of dollars and takes years. Many people on death row die of natural causes. It's cheaper to sentence them to life.
All the judges lawyers and prisons etc are making bank. Ridiculous. No one has the right to take a life. I know my view on chomos being killed is hypocritical but yeah.
It doesn't make any sense. For most of human history the death penalty wasn't the punishment designed for murderers it was the just the most severe form of punishment, it was the government's way of getting rid of people. That's why jesus was executed. The idea now that it's the punishment for murderers is just nonsense
Fred Allen is a good guy. It would definitely be a strange job in the first place but I can't picture Fred doing it. I'm glad he saw the light. Go live your Dash , Fred .
Thank you Fred Allen for changing your mind and standing up for what you know is right.
This interview has stuck with me for years. It’s changed how I feel about the death penalty!
Strange how he lost his pension since it was because of his work environment he couldn't continue. It was caused by his employer.
Karla fay tucker.... Many people who new her said she was extrodenary person after she was in prison and accualy she changed someone's life after she was executed. That is powerful.
Of course, she was a high level manipulative psychopath. She played her role good. Now the question is - how would you have treated her and her "change" if she would have done what she did (God forbid) to someone you know?
Well, she also changed someone's life before she went to prison...changed it with a pickaxe. Wouldn't God talk her outta that ?
You can tell it still eats him up.
This Fred Allen interview is wonderful in how it shows real empathy and compassion. I can't help but wonder if Fred was always so sincere or did it come on gradually with time and the number of executions he oversaw . What I mean is that he seems like a great guy to know, but was he always? Another great scene in Werner's interview with James Barnes is the segment with Mr. Burdon , I hope my spelling is correct, Mr George Burdon I believe his name is explained how Due Process is why America, I'm in Canada and we have a great judicial system here as well and due process is the most important thing that our countries afford us , but to listen to him tell of living in countries where there is no due process. I have been in many countries where people aren't candid with who they speak to or associate with. Anyway, I'm rambling, outstanding interviews and channel. Cheers from Vancouver 🇨🇦
Very affecting documentary. The image of the red camaro sitting in the yard years later is one I wont soon forget🕊️
That dash statement is power i never heard it that way
"Thou shalt not kill." - the Ten Commandments of the Bible
Thank you Fred Allen.
Odd that one person would change the way he felt... he put lots of people to death that no doubt deserved it.
Aint nobody got time to look at the birds. We gots to make a living
this guy was too soft for his job, it got to him
He´s not soft, its called having a conscious...
