William Oliver Stone (born September 15, 1946) is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. Stone won an Academy Award® for Best Adapted Screenplay as writer of Midnight Express (1978), and wrote the gangster film remake Scarface (1983). Stone achieved prominence as writer and director of the war drama Platoon (1986), which won Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture. Platoon was the first in a trilogy of films based on the Vietnam War, in which Stone served as an infantry soldier. He continued the series with Born on the Fourth of July (1989)-for which Stone won his second Best Director Oscar-and Heaven & Earth (1993). Stone's other works include the Salvadoran Civil War-based drama Salvador (1986); the financial drama Wall Street (1987) and its sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010); the Jim Morrison biographical film The Doors (1991); the satirical black comedy crime film Natural Born Killers (1994); a trilogy of films based on the American Presidency: JFK (1991), Nixon (1995), and W. (2008); and Snowden (2016).
Many of Stone's films focus on controversial American political issues during the late 20th century, and as such were considered contentious at the times of their releases. They often combine different camera and film formats within a single scene, as demonstrated in JFK (1991), Natural Born Killers (1994), and Nixon (1995).[4]
Like his subject matter, Stone has become a controversial figure in American filmmaking, with critics accusing him of promoting conspiracy theories, and of misrepresenting real-world events and figures in his works. He has been frequently critical of American foreign policy and approved of leaders such as Hugo Chávez and Vladimir Putin.

I've always had mad respect and love for Oliver Stone and his films. Great interview.
He is one of my heroes. His entire life story is so inspirational. Here is a rich son of a New York stockbroker who volunteered to go to Vietnam to experience something real only to learn everything he was taught by his father was a lie. You may not agree with him, but everything he believes is a direct result of his experiences.
I've enjoyed Oliver's movies from the start and last year read his book "Chasing The Light" which was very interesting as you can imagine. Thanks for the video!

It sounded like he made his way somehow, but one must be fair about both sides of the coin here, because what he didn't mention was his big budgeted intellectual attempt at a big 'Gladiator"-like blockbuster with "Alexander" (2004), which bombed in the U.S.
That's when he lost his momentum in Hollywood, & there have even been several later cut versions made that even with improvements, have still left U.S. audiences cold, & it was all under Stone's complete maverick control with Warners blessing of a $155 million budget, the movie simply didn't work, period. So he can't put his ultimate falling-out of-favor all on the corporate Hollywood studio system....

Two words: Robert Richardson
After Richardson stopped his collaboration with Stone (U-Turn was their last film)...Stone's output seemed to fall apart.
THIS is the question I would have asked Stone: What happened?
No, he was clearly greatly affected by the death of Princess Diana. After she died in 1997 (the same year U-Turn came out) he has never been the same.
Or perhaps correlation does not equal causation.

Hate to break it you ya. Richardson wasn’t going to save that film, that’s how bad it was.
Oliver stone made some good movies after his collobration with with Robert Richardson had ended: Any given Sunday, World Trade Center and W.
Would’ve been great if he made Noriega starring Al Pacino.
