HOW TO CLEAN AGATES W/ CITRIC ACID

- In this video, I show you how to clean agates with citric acid! Getting rid of river scum and river burn on your stones has never been easier! To be honest, I was shocked out how much better my agates looked afterwards, this process will now be my exclusive means of cleaning my Lake Superior agates. Taking three days to clean river burned agates is a bit excessive, you could probably get away with a two days.
Step by step:
1. Poor HOT water over the rocks
2. For every cup of water, add 1 tablespoon of citric acid.
3. Mix citric acid, water, and rocks around
4. Let sit for no more than 3 days. Every 24 hous, mix the batch around and rotate rocks.
5. After 3rd day, poor citric acid in a safe place and rinse off rocks.
6. Put back in HOT water with baking soda, mix together. (This helps neutralize the acid)
7. Clean off again, I used soap and water, and enjoy :)
Please let me know if there is any additional steps you can think of so we can make this the best way to clean off your dirty stones!

I don't drink but if you're ever in the cities, I'll buy ya a round or three.
That makes my heart warm, I am happy to help and glad to have you with on these adventures in spirit ❤️ I’m game for a round.. or there haha 😊
Wow these are awesome finds, they turned out really cool. Thanks for sharing this process.
Wow those are all amazing finds! Truly spectacular. Can’t wait for the cutting video 😆
Hi again TAYLOR
Great idea and good result. The large moss one my fav too!
Can hary wait to hear your plans for each.
That was a fun happy hunt for sure.
Thx as always for sharing. See you again soon...
🙏❤️
Wow, those cleaned up really nice. I'm glad I was able to be there when you found that last one. What a beauty!
Glad you were too 🙂
Thank you for this very informative video Taylor! Your timing is impeccable as my daughter just found a couple of agates this weekend and was asking how we could clean them up better than just with soap, water and a toothbrush. Thanks again Taylor. Have a great weekend
Well I’m so happy the timing worked out!!
The Citric Acid works amazing. Not just on agates, but jasper and other specimens too.
Amazing video and very beautiful rocks!!
Keep it up like that my friend and always be careful!!
Have a nice sequel and I look forward to the next video!!
Thanks 🙏
Can't believe how amazing those turned out!
Thanks for sharing with me how you did it!
Oh wow! Thank you! I have agates and also rocks that look like yours i didn't know were agates.
I'm giving citric acid a try today. I have been using Bar Keepers Friend and soaking them for a few weeks with great results! Slow process but very good results!
Excelente piezas!!! Felicidades!!!
Thank you for this! I was just told about citric acid and have been meaning to try it! Great video!
It’s pretty easy, just gotta be patient, I’ll be using this from now on 🤘🤘
Excellente!!! Thanks for sharing!!!! 🤗♥️🙏🏼
The citric acid worked really well! I can't wait to see if you cut them!
heck yea I wasn't expecting the citric acid to do that much! BEAUTIFUL pieces!
Great results with a basic process!
Cool idea thank you for sharing 😊💙
Hey buddyyyyy happy to run into another Michigan rockhound gonna check out your videos I just came home from this untapped gem of a creek it has everything from Lake Superior agates to petosky stones slag glass horned Coral jasper fresh water pearls charlevoix banded agate some weird gobi looking agate and it’s a trail off of the Clinton river it’s blown my mind you look down and everything is clean you don’t even have to agitate the water 😍🤓
Sounds awesome!! I’m from MN btw 😄
Oxalic acid Wood Bleach at your local home Depot or Lowe's is what I use to clean my rocks with and you won't believe how fast it works either like within 15 minutes and they're clean now I will soak my Arkansas crystals in it for a few days but that's to get the red clay out of the deep pockets but for my creek agates, petrified corals, and other great finds they're cleaned within minutes.
Yes I agree, works awesomely
Sweet!
Thank you.
Thanks!
FYI, this video was the #1 hit for googling "how to......". I was like, hey, I know who that guy is. Too cool. I just got a box of really nice pet wood chunks from Nevada, and a gorgeous hand polished piece.
Now I know how to get that river scum off. I hope it works on Maganese too. Thank you.
Got the C A last night, and can't wait to see how they come out. I decided to them all. I added a little dish soap to help with leftover dirt in crevices. I hope it doesn't counteract the C A. Thanks again.
They cleaned up well. I recognize those that you got in Minnesota. Will be slicing them soon?
The first two likely will be cut!
Awesome vid man!! I have a lot of calcum deposits on the little agates I find on the gravel road close to the house.. I know I have citric acid from canning tomatoes.. I guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow 😃👌
Haha let me know how it goes!
@@AgateDad will do👍
So I was just at Lake Superior and I found a couple good agates, but I’m curious to know how you could identify those first rocks as agates? I would have passed right by the and never have known. Great video, I’m definitely gonna try this!
Check out the video of them being found, I show why I think they are agates 🤘🤘
The more you gather the better you will become: we have a contest in our home who can spot the best fossils. Lol. My husband needs bifocals DESPERATELY but still seems to always be the winner! Lol!
@@redhedhik-chik2510 I do too, but the ground from standing position is my “sweet spot”!
woah! I did not know this! I should get a lot of citric acid because I have a lot of rocks.
Sounds like you should try it
Gonna give this a try! Any experience with getting volcanic ash off of petrified wood? There is a solid crust on some real cool pieces I found recently. I can coax some of it off by scraping it and tried vinegar but I never get it all.
Never found any volcanic ash covered pet wood so unfortunately no 😌
Thats how I do mine as well, with a baking soda wash after the citric soak
Do you also scrub the rocks after the citric acid bath?
Dude that big moss really is a nice one! One with that size and quality is hard to come by. Definitely don't cut that one, It's so good the way it is!
I cut my last moss and I regret it
It was a 1.2lb agate 😭
@@AgateDad Awesome! Feels good when you find one over a pound!
Heck yeah!
Hey...cleaned some of our rocks/fossils with concentrated lemon juice.
However, from what I gather it is the same to use citric acid. Great advice from you for us rock and fossil nerds..(I swear there is a geologist gene somewhere yet to be discovered!)
Haha must be! How does the lemon juice fare with fossils?
@@AgateDad I have had no luck with lemon juice honestly.
Maybe I'm not using on the right rocks but in my opinion Oxalic acid works awesome.
I have yet to find something mild to clean calcite, do you know if that would clean it without dissolving it?
Honestly I have no idea, soapy water?
""Agate-y goodness" 😂❤👍
Excellent info, I’ve only known to use muriatic acid or iron out but both are harsh.
Yeah that’s why I’ve always used vinegar but never very happy with it. I was with the citric acid!
I soaked a bunch of agates with citric acid ( I stirred it well before adding) and the agates came out with a white coating. Any idea what it is and how to remove it?
Have you tried Cutting board mineral oil? I've tried it on some of my fossilized wood/bone as well as some of my other rocks & it works pretty good, it gives the wood/bone really good color.
never tried it, I'll look into it
@@AgateDad I leave it soaking in a ziplock for a day or 2? I've been experimenting on the time & I'm not sure if longer will make that much of a Dif?
2 days will probably do it
Does anyone use cerium oxide or mineral oil after the citric acid?
Wondering mostly for my cold water agates
Are there other rocks that you've used citric acid on? Are there any rocks that you should avoid using this on, besides limestone?
Not sure, I’ve only done agates and probably only will
niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice
Hello, can I use the yellow water to next batch? Or should I change to new citric acid water? Thank you
You should change it out
@@AgateDad thank you so much!
Any tips for removing limonite staining from LS Agates?
I wouldn’t even try lol
@@AgateDad normally I wouldn't, but I think this one may have some real tasty candy underneath and it's just a big ugly blob....let me know if you hear of any tips or tricks. Might try muriatic acid on a smaller one first.... hesitant with the HCL though. Heard horror stories.
Be careful not to leave the citric asid water setting long enough to grow mold.
Bleach works for cleaning agates too
Good agates. I know you never would, but they all need a cut and polish. 😎
Hahaha maybe the first two!
Muriatic acid will clean those much better and do so in under two minutes. Before you freak out let me say I remove creek stain from artifacts with it. I tested it with broken artifacts first to see what would happen and then moved on to complete artifacts. Works like a charm no damage only stain removal.
Why would I freak out? Lol I don’t care what you do
@@AgateDad 10/4 baby no problem. Some people tend to do that when I mention muriatic acid. Rock on
I have a big jug under my work bench lol I firmly believe in the statement “you do you”, so if you like it and are safe, go for it 🤘🤘
@@AgateDad It is bad stuff that requires safety but the results are great in removing creek stain. Have a good one.
Is that the citric acid made from.corn and mold and sugar??? I guess thats the cheaper way for them to make it these days instead of fruit citric acid!
My agates are so dirty
It's scary how citric acid strips rocks, and I use them in my cocktails for sweet sour syrup!
Please cut the moss agate and maybe clean up with a saw that really nice one.🙏🙏🙏🤎
Probably not doing anything with them ❤️
@@AgateDad OK so how about polishing on the high tech at least you would really see more of the stone
I have cut and worked moss agates before and it ends up being not worth it, as far as the banded beauty, it’s natural state is amazing so there’s nothing I need to do to increase its beauty, in my opinion. I try to work stones that don’t have the greatest as is appearance. Maybe down the line I’ll want to, but as of now, it’s staying as is 😊🤘🤘
I bet if you tumble the last one it would be awesome! Just saying... Thanks!
I bet it would for sure!
I wonder if muriatic acid would work better? 🤣 being chalcedony, it should be fine right?
Try it and let us know
@@AgateDad I will make a note to get back to you! That stuff can be real nasty though, maybe not the best solution 🤣
That’s why I like natural solutions lol
If you let them soak for approximately a week you'll have much better results.
Ill test it out sometime
Been using citric acid for years. pro tip : dissolve the acid in hot water to speed up the process
I shared that hot water details in the description box step by step initially, I think I forgot to say that in the video lol
