  • This is just a quick tutorial to show the way I clean my agates. Citric acid is a mild acid, so it's safe to use inside, but it still works very well for getting that black river scum off of rocks.

    The rocks should be dirty, my sisters brush. Ha, ha, ha, ha! So funny. Thanks for the great tip. Keep the goodness coming. Be happy, safe, and stay warm and healthy.

    That looks like it works pretty good . I have been buying bottles of pure lemon juice . It works really good and is strong enuf to soak at least 3 to 5 different batches of rocks before it quits working.
    Keep rockin!!👍😎

    I don't recall seeing that last one before. That is a nice R&W. Great video. Much safer than Muriatic Acid guys. Also works on other minerals too. Slightly dissolves some fossils that aren't agatized or chaledony.

    Hi Thomas, thank you for the information. Though I've watched videos and read instructions on muriatic acid; I'm still reluctant to use it. This is a great alternative to try before taking the muriatic acid plunge- figuratively speaking.

      That's what I love about the citric acid. It works well, and you don't have to worry too much about it. You can even dump it down the drain.

    Good info, Thomas. I know a lot of people use vinegar for this purpose. Do you know if there are advantages or disadvantages to citric acid over vinegar?

    • @Rocking-SLC
      @Rocking-SLC 2 роки тому

      Hi Rob. As a teenager did you try cleaning your car battery with vinegar and Coke? It certainly appeared to create cleaning bubbles! I wonder if that would work with rocks.

    • @99Rockhounding
      @99Rockhounding  2 роки тому

      I've tried both and vinegar does not work nearly as well as the citric acid does. Citric acid also doesn't smell bad. The only disadvantages might be it costs a little more than vinegar, and might be a little more work.

      @@Rocking-SLC I did not try that, but I have heard of it. In 7th grade, we directed a frog and there was extra credit for assembling the frog skeleton. I used Coke to help remove the meat from the bones. I can't remember how that worked, but I do remember getting 50 points extra credit and having a pretty cool looking frog skeleton to hand in.

      @@MichiganRocks we did baby pigs instead of frogs, didn't know that coke would do that. My great uncle was the chief of police in LA years ago, and he would tell me they used coke to clean blood off the street. This is a product we consume!

    If you live in a very rural area or small town, buy citric acid before canning season. Where I live it's shelved with canning jars and lids and disappears in a hurry!

      I use it for all of the rocks I find in creeks and rivers. I would be careful with certain rocks that could be damaged by acids, but things like jasper, agates, quartz, etc. should be fine.
