Had this car for 3 years, upgrading from a Hyundai Tucson. I've always held the opinion that a 'good car' needed around 150 hp to be fun, with diminishing returns beyond 250 hp. Oh boy was I wrong. This thing is just mental (TORQUE!) and extremely infectious. I've never had a car before that made me smile everytime I walked towards it. Loved it so much that the replacement is now a 'proper' M car with 625 hp (my bank account sitting in a dark corner somewhere crying 'Make it stop!"). So thank you BMW - you've ruined my life in a very fun way :D

Same here. Went from 50hp Vw polo to Skoda Superb with 280HP, never looked back😂😂 Problem is I got used to power and now my heart wants something with 6 cylinders😮

This car would be faster in person than in the video .. i used to drive G31 530d touring x-drive ( a rental car ) when i visited Germany last month and the acceleration from standing still was so fantastic including the sound engine is also nice .. the keyboard-guy who say “slow” would never drive even 320d lol

These new cars m5 and e63 are amazing, and when you realize a m550d with 400 hp makes 0 to 100 in 4.4 and the M6 with 560 hp makes 0 to 100 in almost 4 seconds it is ridiculous how fast new sedans are.

Beautifull car
Having owned an F10 525d, and rented a G30(?) 520d touring, I can say that the newer car is more comfortable (seats, suspension) and drives a bit nicer too. Not to mention the X-drive on the 520d was amazing, I couldn't get the wheels to break traction when accelerating on a damp road. Having owned quite a few BMWs though, wouldn't get another one due to maintenance costs. Still, a good car to own if you want to get to know your mechanic on a invite-each-other-around for dinner level.

I couldn't find 550d in the UK, unfortunately, and had to go for 340d, but to be honest, it's a nice BMW too 👌. Great performance Great aspects and very good fuel consumption 👍

Klopt het dat deze auto niet de 400pk aantikt op de sports display als hij nog onder de 2000km (inrij kilometers) zit? Of gaat er wat fout?
Is it true that this car doesnt hit the 400hp on the sportsdisplay if the car is still under the 2000km break in period? Or is there something wrong?

The 540i is expensive with optional in my country around 100k, so I preferred to buy the 530i with many optionals
This is my dream car... i mean, it just JACKPOT from the deepest inside and out.... Its like you put a beast engine on a most comfortable, luxurious car (but not over the top) you can use 24-7..... its beautiful exterior, the interior is absolutely gorgeous/luxurous, its rear wheel drive, then you have a MASSIVE DIESEL engine (reliable & economic, what normal ~400 hp engine car is this fuel efficient?) while giving you ***ing supercar speed & thrill.... its a cheat code to go that fast and ECONOMIC! Then the 5 series is just spacy, comfortable.... it fits for the lone wolf or for the entire family...... YOU CAN COMMUTE/USE IT EVERY SINGLE DAY ENTIRE YEAR WITH UTMOST COMFORT and when it gets lonely/boring, pedal to the metal!

I’ve never seen a BMW 550d in UK. Do they sell them here? If so then I don’t think many people buy them.
There is currently no Right Hand Drive for M550d.
You need to lobby for it. UK, Australia and Japan are the biggest Right Hand Drive markets in the world so people need to request from BMW UK, BMW Australia and BMW Japan to make an RHD version of the M550d
No M550d for the UK. An X7 M50d (why?) is available though.

Probably around 15 l/100 km... well thats what a BMW 135i from some years ago would give... the M550d might be a Diesel but its also a heavier, less aerodynamic car... somewhere between 15-20 l/100 km maybe

@@gavinthenav6594 fastest stock, if you put 10k on this engine and 10k on a cummins (or whatever amount you want) this will beat it. You cant compare a tuned cummins to a stock bmw.

Quad turbo = Quad possible things to go wrong long-term... Was that really necessary to fit 4 turbos like Bugatti , instead put better, bigger twin-turbo? I ain't engine expert at all, but 3.0L quad-turbo diesel just sounds funny.

If you warm the engine up like you should and maintain the car what a lot of people don't do, then it will last.
I do, however it still sounds unnecessary. Like, expect to see 2020 BMW 760d 3.0L hexa-turbo? V12 performance with more boosted engine. Despite the fact that technological advancements do make all those wonders possible and more reliable; I wouldn't wanna know how many times a year one would have to take the car to service after warranty expiration. I miss the 90's era refinement.

Benedettini93 Well let me ask you this, why are there 12 cilinder engines when you only need 6 to eliminate all imbalances? And why are there turbocharged cars to begin with when belt driven compressors are so much simpler? Why don't all cars have MacPherson strut based suspension?
Two small turbo for faster response and two big turbo for more boost at high engine rpm

Please try this in D not in S, so it switches to 8th gear. Or atleast manually switch to the 8th..
That is an overdrive gear, if it switches to eighth gear it would slow down, not go faster.
@@nicholaslee5473 it is a diesel, peak torque drops at high rpm, so it works better in 8th gear. And I'm not just saying this because I feel like it, I actually own a 2016 bmw f11 diesel with zf 8 speed auto, and living in germany I had plenty of opportunities to test this
@@drinnify I understand that, I did not say it wouldn't work, I said it would not have the same power and acceleration as the 7th.
Overdrives are made for saving fuel, thus the ratio is usually set past the maximum capability of the engine. It is meant to be engaged at cruising speeds. Essentially the engine does not produce enough power for that ratio to be operated at high speed. i.e. if you were on a bike, as you go higher and higher in gears, your legs find it progressively more difficult to pedal, there will be a point where you are at your muscular limit, that is where most manufacturers position these overdrive ratios.
Having said that, I don't know how BMW engineers do it though, he may be able to eek out a few more kms if the final overdrive is only nearing the limit of the engine, but I've seen other cars slow down because they put it into overdrive while attempting top speed runs.
@@nicholaslee5473 you would be right if we were talking about an engine that gains power constantly over the rpm range (best example a n/a petrol engine). If we look at a turbo diesel, the torque and power drop noticeably at high rpm. When you switch to the 8th gear on a bmw diesel (while going around 200km/h +-) you will put the engine in a more favorable rpm range, and thus get better acceleration (in my 520d the torque drop is noticeable around 3800-3900 rpm, the transmission shifts at somewhat around 4300rpm).
So yes, the 8th gear is longer and the engine should have it harder to accelerate to top speed in 8th gear theoretically, but since we're talking about a diesel this doesn't apply (because of the power drop).
@@drinnify if you're talking about 200km/h +-, then yes, it's likely to still be able to accelerate, but if you're approaching the speed limit that the 7th gear can provide then 8th gear would not provide more acceleration.
Everytime you go up a gear, the ratios require more torque to accelerate the car, that's just the physics behind a larger gear driving a smaller gear. On an overdrive gear this usually exceeds the max torque of the engine, irrespective of what rpm range you are in.
But as I said, I do not know what BMW's 8th gear ratio is, and you are more familiar with the brand, so perhaps they did not position the overdrive gear too far apart that there may still be acceleration to be had.

I know its a heavy car but i was really disappointed in that acceleration! Seemed effortless and im sure it will suit the way its meant to be driven but i just expected more go after 100 kph
4.4 is really fast for what it is though. A luxury diesel.
It's a practical very fuel efficient car. Not muscle s**t American's love. Loud and not so long lasting cars.
The car is good but I can't tell the same for driver. He just takes gear left and arranges suspension in sport mode as well. They put clutches behind the wheel. Is it an unusable item? Driving in full throttle in such a car is not a driving skill. Even a grandma can achieve high speed in this type of car.
What is the engine? Looks slow compared to other cars.
