I have been journalling every day for 51 years and can attest to its benefits. It is the anchor in my mental health journey. 438 volumes are now housed in the University of Northern BC archives and as I complete new volumes, they are added to the collection. The writings, collages, drawing and ephemera are the musings of an ordinary person over decades of life started when I was 24 and asked for my “reactions” in a summer Art Education class at UBC. The format was stream of consciousness writing to begin with but has evolved into more formal story telling.
I have been journalling for 2 years now. It helped me to process my feelings better bot when I’m happy and yes, when I am most challenged. This video is actually so helpful to better understand the benefits of journaling. Keep on doing the great work, Tom!
Mate I really like this style. “Conversational science”...The best teachers at school always provoked conversation and weren’t afraid to take their students out of the text book. Think it’s a really cool style you’re cultivating. 🙌🏼
Couldn't time it better. Having early life crisis at 17. Really need to sort my self out. I know I need to do it, but I don't know how. This really helps.
That's good to hear that you think it'll help you out. Also, don't be afraid to reach out to people that are close to you or any form of counselling to help you out with whatever you're going through. If it's anxiety about your future and choosing your path, my little bit of advice would be to take a few deep breaths and understand that you DO NOT need to have it all figured out right now.
going on depression, stress and anxiety lately because of the lockdown and chaos...journaling indeed helps..it helped me alot...I just finished my entry for the day and I felt good as if a heavy load has been taken a way from me after a long time of burden
I started a gratitude journal in March and I write one page every morning of what I’m grateful for. This has helped me in so many ways, I used to complain allot and have a negative outlook on life. The gratitude journal has changed my mindset and has increased my happiness. I can’t do a day without writing in it now.
That's fair. As I said, I found doing it daily to be a bit harder than I expected. But doing it when I felt I needed to figure something out in my head really benefited me
@@MiracleWinchester although I didn't dig into it in this video, I did read in a few papers that intensifying emotions is a possible outcome of it, at least in the short term, too. But they also suggested that the net effect, including the intensified emotions, was still positive weeks/months later. Not sure how conclusive they can really be about that though. This was a really hard one to research!
Buchanan Winchester I’m 17 now and same, I have 3 so far, with one being fully filled but spanning grade 5 to 8 or so, with many gaps. Second one is similar but less gapping and to my present age. The third journal I just bought two days ago, because I hadn’t brought my journal with me but I’m in a different country. Started a new journal to keep myself busy when there’s very limited internet! Also it’s themed to the country I’m in, so it is a nice mark of my time here.
I used to carry note books around all the time, mostly just drawing and writing scientific thoughts and mathematical and geometric stuff. Over the years, as my imagination fades into depression, I don't do this so much anymore. Also it gets more difficult with time as my hands and eyes have suffered from working hard in the sun. When I was younger I liked drawing a lot, as I've gotten older I seem to write more. I would like to return to my artistic roots and refresh my pursuit in scientific interest, a journey with an overgrown path.
You're clearly a writer, as that was one of the most poetic comments I've ever received. Whilst I can't say where I'll be in 10,20,30 years, I know that already I miss the simple act of just sitting down for an evening (what used to be 'after school') and just drawing. Sometimes detailed stuff, sometimes cartoony, sometimes black and white, sometimes colour. So relaxing and so fun! I'm with you on wanting to get that side of life going again! You're not alone here pal!
haha thanks! I was a terrible student in most of my English classes, I absolutely despised learning the technicalities, but I did well in vocabulary. I was a terrible student in general, but regardless of my bad grades I did learn a lot. I really need to go back to school, I can feel the gradual loss of information which used to be in ready supply.
@@shartbake1134 Haha. I actually know a lot of people that would have called themselves terrible students but then found something they liked doing - in your case writing, I think - and they excelled simply because it had that passion driving them! Looks like you're the same! Again, I know where you're coming from. I started this channel as a way to get back into just learning for the sake of learning. So I'm lucky that I have that opportunity. But I am still missing the _applied_ side of using my brain. EG I use to LOVE maths, because you learn the formulas and techniques etc. then you can apply it straight away

Thank you for taking us outdoors! It's so lovely to have a peek at (presumably) the area where you live in. I'm not sure if that's the English countryside but it looks absolutely serene and beautiful. I kept a journal which I wrote in almost daily when I was much younger... I started when I was 8 or 9, on paper notebooks, then eventually transferred to an online journal (livejournal haha!). I did this until I was about 21 or 22. I did it back then because it was very cathartic and it enabled me to understand, elucidate and process my thoughts and feelings. It was really helpful as a teenager to be able to do this at a time when a lot of physical, hormonal, and mental changes were happening. I remember back in the "olden" days when writing a journal was a habit done by anyone who was privileged enough to know how to write, but I think it's starting to become an exercise that's slowly disappearing and being replaced by more "social" equivalents that might not capture that same mechanism of being led to introspect on your day and your thoughts and your feelings. I also really love the point that you make at 4:35. There will really just be some days where you cannot find or think of anything to write. I frequently found myself before itching to write something, but not having anything happening to write about - so I would instead just write poetry or random fiction. Thanks for such an insightful video, as always. :)

I've been journaling since 2008. The more stress that you are under, the more it works. I have never used a paper journal though, and don't like paper at all. I've just used one long word processor file, and then very recently switched to the Day One app.
4:42 the fact that this video is from 5 years ago, yet only watched it after already falling into that trap during the pandemic. i had so much thoughts and believed that dumping them unto paper was good enough. But i unconsciously shifted my mindset to satisfy myself with the act of writing instead of doing something constructive with them (like CBT which i only heard of recently). Well, I have started journaling this year. Before I started journaling I had a lot of personal stress, depression and anxiety which increased my sensitiveness. And I had no one to share about the stress that I am going through. But after I started journaling, my depression, personal stress and anxiety have began to reduce gradually! I think that journaling might actually work for people who suffering from depression, personal stress and anxiety like it did for me (even though it will waste our time).
Interesting. I suffer from anxiety and try to journal but I always tend to be so negative in my writing... how long do you journal and when was the first time you noticed it actually help?
Great vid mate. Always love your editing + motion graphics. Blinkist looks freaking great too! I'm awful at reading...this might actually change my life!!
I find journaling therapeutic. I find using my iPhone journal better as the lack of privacy of a notebook gives me anxiety. Journaling on phone allows me to attach images and videos. I’m a visual person and I enjoy seeing photos together with the text I write.
Awesome video dude! Just heard of your channel and not only am I subscribing, I'm going to try journaling everyday now and also show this to my students! Can't wait to watch the rest of your vids you put out and see what other cool vids you got on the channel!
@@TommoCarroll my suggestion is after knowing how something, for example meditation, works. how can we improve it? I really like the moment when I go about "wew I've been doing it wrong this whole time" :D
@@fazarsn That's a great way to look at it! So what you're suggesting _really_ is how a lot of science/medicine has worked - you find something that works. You use that thing. Then you find WHY/HOW it works and then you refine it. That story applies over and over again to medicine
People never mention the interesting part of reading back on joirnals from 5-10 years ago. Can be a mixed bag, seeing how much dumber/cockier/sadder/or more lost you were, OR how much less so you were back then compared to now. It can really be a rollercoaster. Also helps you remember days and things you would've probably totally forgot about
when i was in highchool i have this diary where i vent etc everyday i didnt know that it was some kind of journaling that i was doing but i have notice how better my life was back then when i was journaling.
Is it alright to burn my journal ,whenever I consume a notebook? Would I feel bad if I do? I'd burn it because I don't want anyone to accidentally reading it.
I would write in journals as a kid but would always throw them away and never complete them due to not being able to keep up with it and push forward it wasn't a lack of motivation but more like getting tired of writing in it consistently. I use to write about things that were happening in my life. But now I sort of keep a journal as a coping tool to sort out my thoughts and emotions. It's weird having a journal as a 20 year old. Cause keeping a journal/ diary is usually seen as a teenage girl thing and I'm probably too old for it. But whatever keeps my sanity I guess. Anything will do.
I mean if that works for you, go for it! But I’m specifically talking about writing about the thoughts in your head, the emotions you’re feeling, maybe write about things you’re grateful for or worries about. Essentially it stops you for a second and forced you to examine some things that are going on in your head in ways that you don’t normally do
I agree...with all of it. Meditation video 👍 My personal tip on that is a meditation retreat. It truly is the best way to establish a meditation practice surrounded by like minded people, and put down the electronics while you’re there.
It has helped for me 😊 I get PD, GAD and a spot of depression. I've also been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis recently amongst other things. I've done CBT and that helped too. Journaling is great
That's awesome to hear! I honestly use it most days at the moment, it's such a great thing to just fit into a 15/20 minute break or walk. Let me know what you think!
Great video! Thanks, Tom for your insights. For some reason I think this video could do a lot better (in terms of UA-cam algorythm) if you named it something along these lines “30 days of journaling” - just my opinion :) cool thumbnail though. P.S. Yes, a video about meditation would be super cool!
@@benasleo You might notice with each upload I change it a bunch of times. I'm pretty terrible with picking titles so I'm all ears when anyone suggests a potentially better one! Thanks a lot :)
I use a heap of sources. I'm trying to figure out the best way to share them with everyone without chucking a load of links in the description. This was a good article that had a bunch of links that I used as a jumping off point: positivepsychology.com/benefits-of-journaling/#research-journaling
I feel like journalling would just cause me more stress. I'd be in bed at the end of if the day; tired and not feeling like doing anything, when all of a sudden I remember I still have to write like 16 pages in my journal. That would just add a bunch of stress. Also I'd be at work just wanting to be done, when I realise I still have to write 38 pages of words on paper when I get home. That would give me a lot of anxiety. Also, also, if I give in to my own laziness and not write 63 pages of thoughts and prayers front and back, I'd feel super depressed about it. Bottom line is: I don't think journalling is for me, but I'll try it out. Cool video!
Working on making that easily accessible to people with a single link. I can't put them in the comments or description as too many links have the potential to be marked as spam by UA-cam (they're very unclear on this, but I don't want to take any chances). Considering using a free blog website to just make posts about each episode that would include a list of the top sources
Hey Aspect Science, love your videos! I was wondering if you'd be willing to post the studies you used in your videos in the description of your videos for us to look at after watching. Thanks!

@@Alia-bc3rc I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. You'll likely find that there is a skew down to the fact that Western universities will have a higher population % of those demographics and therefore the test subjects will also fit those demographics

I'm barely watching this video ! I hope you're still making UA-cam videos and especially inspirational, informative and life changing.
Another great video. Coincidentally I just bought my eldest a diary for his birthday as he has emotional troubles. Fingers crossed it helps him.
Thanks so much! I'm sorry to hear that, hopefully it helps!
Amazing, clarity in your message. Love it.
Another great video!!
Thanks a lot Michael!
That's awesome to hear! Thanks for subscribing! Can't wait to share them with you!
I don't want to journal all day just to waste my pens, no thank you, but i am seeking ways to be positive, for myself and others that is.
Haha, I wouldn't suggest journaling all day anyway! Might hurt your hand!
I am doing it for last 2 years , no matter what people say, it makes your life easy
I am watching the ad since, you put it at the end you rock! I am going to give journaling a try 👍🏼
want to point out sometimes we don't need to know how something works, if it works then just do it.
but thats just my opinion
Despite being quite scientifically minded, requiring evidence before taking something on, I do agree with you here I think
Most definatly the best video for journaling on all of UA-cam. You rock!! I subscribed and am looking forward to your video on MEDITATION !!
I would love a video about meditation!
By the way, a great video as always. Keep up the work!
Nice! I'll add your vote to the 'yes' pile! :) Thanks so much
Is it alright to burn my journal ,whenever I consume a notebook? Would I feel bad if I do? I'd burn it because I don't want anyone to accidentally reading it.
I'm thinking of starting a journal, but Idk what I'd even write. Can someone tell me what they usually write about?
Start off with gratitude. Just write 5 bullet points about things you're grateful for! Can change your mood/frame of mind instantly!
Your journal style is what I'm doing for a few years now
I would write in journals as a kid but would always throw them away and never complete them due to not being able to keep up with it and push forward it wasn't a lack of motivation but more like getting tired of writing in it consistently.
Thank you for sharing! I'm doing research fora blog post about journaling :)
Great vid. What camera are you using?
Thanks! GH5 👍
By journaling do you mean writing down things you did during the day, like a diary?
I mean if that works for you, go for it! But I’m specifically talking about writing about the thoughts in your head, the emotions you’re feeling, maybe write about things you’re grateful for or worries about. Essentially it stops you for a second and forced you to examine some things that are going on in your head in ways that you don’t normally do
I just found your channel & I love your content!
Amazing video! Looking forward to watching the meditation video!
Thanks a lot!
I agree...with all of it. Meditation video 👍 My personal tip on that is a meditation retreat. It truly is the best way to establish a meditation practice surrounded by like minded people, and put down the electronics while you’re there.
Would totally love a meditation video. I need that validation. lol
Added to the yes votes! Haha I hear you!
It has helped for me 😊
I get PD, GAD and a spot of depression. I've also been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis recently amongst other things.
I've done CBT and that helped too.
Journaling is great
Yes, journaling does help improve mental health. I am a long time fan.
Nice! Happy to hear it benefits you!
I have to say that video on meditation sounds quite interesting! I would love to see that one.
Awesome! You've officially been added to the 'yes' count
That book app seems cool. I'll check it out.
That's awesome to hear! I honestly use it most days at the moment, it's such a great thing to just fit into a 15/20 minute break or walk. Let me know what you think!
Yes thoughts and emotions it helps to just ✍️ coupled with faith it's the beginning of a healing journey. And yes meditations it is helpful.
Yes on the meditation video please
On its way! :) Check out the Aspect Science instagram for info about a 30 day challenge happening now!
Oooh. A video about meditation sounds great!!
In the works :) Glad you like the sound of it
Great video! Thanks, Tom for your insights. For some reason I think this video could do a lot better (in terms of UA-cam algorythm) if you named it something along these lines “30 days of journaling” - just my opinion :) cool thumbnail though.
P.S. Yes, a video about meditation would be super cool!
I've met you in the middle with the new name ;)
Thanks for the suggestion - happy to take the feedback of the herd!
Oh did not expect for you to change the title! Looks awesome! Hope the video does well :)
@@benasleo You might notice with each upload I change it a bunch of times. I'm pretty terrible with picking titles so I'm all ears when anyone suggests a potentially better one! Thanks a lot :)
Great video! thank you, very useful content
Hi! Great video! I want to learn more about this topic. What are your sources?
Cool video!
Another great video. Something I'd love, though, is to see your sources? In the comments perhaps?
Working on making that easily accessible to people with a single link. I can't put them in the comments or description as too many links have the potential to be marked as spam by UA-cam (they're very unclear on this, but I don't want to take any chances). Considering using a free blog website to just make posts about each episode that would include a list of the top sources
Wait wtf how do you only have 67k subs? You deserve much more
I don't journal because I work a very repetitive, boring job and doing the same thing every day makes me sad
I'm sorry to hear that Robin :(
You can also use it as seeing into the pass in the future( In writing )
I meditate each day, I would love an episode abt it, have you ever tried Headspace?
Nice! I have tried headspace...I really can't stand the guy's voice! haha
Yes to the meditation video
the meditation video would be reaaaally cool man
Awesome! It's in the works!
Meditation sounds intriguing.. both are great books!
Awesome!
Wow! This is interesting to know!
Please do a video on meditation :D
I'm thinking I will! :D
Amazzing videeoo keep going
Can't wait to watch the meditation video!
In that case I can't wait to make it!
@@TommoCarroll ahaha, you star. :)
@@kousetsuhana Haha I try 🌟⭐
Yes please for the meditation video!
En route! I've just started a 30 day meditation challenge for it - check out the Aspect Science instagram if you want to get involved!
Hey Aspect Science, love your videos! I was wondering if you'd be willing to post the studies you used in your videos in the description of your videos for us to look at after watching. Thanks!
Hey! A lot of people ask for this and I keep saying I’m trying to figure out a way to do this without spamming the video description. I think I’ve figure out a good way and will update you soon!
@@TommoCarroll sweet thanks! I know some channels also write accompanying blog posts to videos with all links and further reading there :)
@@alexgordienko9821 This is pretty much what I've concluded is the best option. I won't be writing blog posts. But I'll use a free blog to create a blog post that has the link the video as well as a list of top (not all, I won't be able to share all) sources used
@@TommoCarroll amazing, thanks! Good luck with future videos!
please, make a video about meditation, i never actually understand what's all about, so i'm very curious
Looks like a lot of people want it! I'll likely make it!
Seeing a video about meditation sounds cool
Awesome! It looks like a lot of people want to see it!
I'd love to hear what you have to say about meditation! I'm a long time meditater in the Secular Buddhist tradition. On the other hand, I hate journaling but shall try again!
Stress Anxiety Depression = SAD
These "psychology studies" statement always makes me wondering, did the researchers done it in diverse ethnic groups?
That is a brilliant thought to always have with studies like these. I personally can’t answer that question right now but I completely agree with your mindset here
@@TommoCarroll I once read that there's a bias in psychology study that said the researches are mainly focusing on the population of WEIRD -- Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic. For me, it kinda explaining why most of the times I personally feel kinda "off" with this particular field.
@@Alia-bc3rc I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. You'll likely find that there is a skew down to the fact that Western universities will have a higher population % of those demographics and therefore the test subjects will also fit those demographics
I will give it a try
Interesting! I think I'll try it out and see if it's something for me.
That's awesome to hear! Let me know how it goes!
@@TommoCarroll sure thing
@@silas__3994 Nice!
@@TommoCarroll Thank you alot for making the video, I had never really thought about journaling before, but I have really gotten into it these last few weeks.
Yes for the video about meditation (la bise from France)
Haha ha to look up what that meant. Thanks 😊
@@TommoCarroll Technically if you used Google Translate, you might have it wrong haha :) . It's not a good translation ...
I’m at a low point in my life - and I’m writing, sooo... 👀
I'm sorry to hear that. Is the writing helping?
It actually is, I took more of a creative writing approach where the main character went through what I went through to be free from any type of format. 😊
Thank you very much❤️
It's quite frankly really discouraging that someone with such editing skill can't break big, maybe slow down the scenes a little bit? I don't know shit about video making but it seems like there's a lot of moving around it's kinda jarring. Anyways keep up the great work, that meditation video seems cool
Don't worry he's doing great and I think if he carries on like this his channel will grow exponentially
Thanks for the feedback and encouragement! I'll definitely play around with editing etc. I tend to always try something new with each edit. Always a game of learning and improving!
@@kentonian Thanks Jevon! :)
Meditation video would be awesome!
Definitely going to do it now!
