Sri lanka is one of the richest countries in the world, but unfortunately, the majority of the people are mentally poor , they like free stuff , an effortless life, and never think of going out for the comfort zone, they strongly believe that politicians will have to solve all their problems, yet they want to change the political system of the country but they don't want to change themselves, also they think that there are no any homeless or poor people in rich countries.
We unfortunately see this attitude with some of the comments we are getting. People don’t even believe that there are wealthy people here. Also that we should not be honest about these things.. it’s crazy.
Rich in resources I guess that’s what you mean. Agree with the rest. People are very dependent. They don’t want to change themselves, majority of them I believe, no matter where they come from.

Probably the best Colombo 7 video I have seen so far. You guys did justice to show around some important places. The Arcade used to be a dump sort of a place, neglected and overgrown trees. You got it right, in the colonial period it used to be a Dutch establishment for mentally handicapped. The govt gave it a face lift and transformed to the building you see today.
Guys.. If you go to Peradeniya you can see a very beautiful botanical garden there. It was started during the British colonial rule in Ceylon and attracts thousands of local and foreign visitors. 🤣don't talk what you don't know It was originally the pleasure gardens for kandiyan Royal family, before British made it as a royal botanical gardens. Royal means kandiyan kingdom's royal not the British royal 🤣🤣🤣
Hello.. Why do you laugh? Did you think that I don't know its history. Here I didn't say much about the history of this botanical garden. As we know, the garden dates back to 1371. It was a residence of a Kandyan Prince during the 18th century and it was in the early 1800s that it became one of the greatest botanical gardens in the British Empire. So, it's common knowledge that the garden was started during the colonial rule in Ceylon. Understood?

I live in Colombo 05 in a gated residence and I’m 29. More or less real estate value is the same even in Col 05. Let me share the financial perspective. My house worth about 400k USD and i inherited it from my father. I could never buy such a house caz the mortgages are like 30%. Salary is USD 3000 per month before taxes which is considered to be a very good salary in SL. In fact I belong to the highest tax paying bracket 36% per year which is insane. Caz im an engineer and my salary is more or less the minimum wage in a developed country but in SL; I belong to the highest tax paying category lol 😂 is it livable / good life ? Not really with the taxes, import restrictions and everything going on. I’m moving out to Australia in March. Bottom line is even though the buildings looks better there isn’t much money even in Colombo 07. However people in the island thinks for some reason it’s a wealthy (in culture ; yes it’s wealthy !) country which was mismanaged by the politicians 😂 but the reality is it never was , and most of the people are stuck in the past to a point where nobody try to do anything new. As a result the economy in the country heavily depends on tourism, even though there are 20 million human beings living in the island !! . However I’m hopeful about gen z as they are much more progressive / practical . Hopefully in like 50 years this would be a much better place ❤️
Interesting video, well done. Parts of that area look like parts of Denpasar and even Singapore. For some reason it reminded me that quite a few locations in Sri Lanka were used for the filming of the movie 'The Bridge on the River Kwai', including at least one in Columbo. A bit of useless trivia for you. Have you had anyone approach you in a friendly manner who is not trying to sell something? Clearly the people there are generally very friendly so it would be nice to hear that has happened.
Colombo 1-15 just like the 32 boroughs of London. Colombo 7 and some parts of Colombo 8 and 4 (Col 7 borders) are the local version of Kensington and Chelsea. Colombo 01 - Colombo Fort is the local equivalent of the city of London. (the square mile. ironically Fort is also around 1.5sq miles and also the central business district)
At 35:57 you walk past a blue wall and I saw Musaeus College, an all girls buddhist school, founded by a German lady in the early 1900s! I'm glad for your video to take a walk down memory lane.
You are allowed to walk and film and be free... BUT THE REASON why they were a bit concerned (may be over reacting) Sri Lanka is celebrating its 75th independence anniversary on Feb 4th ...just here..I think lots of buses parked as they bring people for rehearsals.
Hi, its a nice comparison video of Colombo, Colombo 7 is super expensive in terms of the property market, which is nearly equivalent to any high-end city around the west, it's a resident place for high-end government officers and top-class business people and also many government institutions are located like grounds, university, club, etc, due to this reason its highly secure place also well guarded by tri forces too, I don't know about your stay in Colombo 4/Bambalapitiya but the land side of the bambalapity also exactly similar to Colombo 7 with high-end buildings and high-class gated community of rich business people, seaside of Colombo 4 is something different from the land side, actually Colombo is a small city and around 1.6million population rich class control a major portion of the land areas and lower classes living in a very tiny portion of Colombo with a lot of dense, trishaw owners are mostly among them, Food is relatively still cheap compare to any other Asian regions but you can't get much variety here, but i would have to say its a cleaned and relatively better climate location from here you can reach a hill or beach with just an hour drive ..... Thank you for visiting our motherland and taking this positivity video to around the world
Glad you are enjoying our birth country #SriLamka ! One of the coolest places on the planet ! Many famous people like Arthur C Clarke chose to make his home and in fact lived behind my classroom in high school down Rosemead place in Colombo 7. ( also across from the First Woman PM and daughter too ) Try Paradise cafe or simply eat at the hotels or so many pastry shops every block as we stop for tea and we have an array of short eats to cakes! Try a place like Peters and Sons family UWM for over 1/2 a century or Fab! So many eateries like that for affordability and delish!
Thank you for the videos and the information you provided, my wife and I will be traveling to Sri Lanka this September, and I have a question, see if you could help us, do you have any suggestions for a cool place where we can stay in Columbo, looking for an area where there's a lot going on, NOT A QUIET AREA. Thank you again.
Lovely video. That service charge is pretty normal anywhere if you dine-in and not take away. Even international franchises like Pizza Hut and McDonald's have it here.
Being a local, watching foreigners filming and talking about our country is always interesting. Mostly it is because of human nature to compare one with another. When one's environment is described by someone else, it offers an opportunity for the first person to dive into the second one's lifestyle.
If u walk across Colombo7 before 2009.!.. Oooh god will make green zone of bagdhad more like a Disneyland 😂 😂 it was the most protected residential area of the country..... And still heavy militery presence! Yeah.... cos of foreign and locale diplomatic residences addressed in Colombo 7. ✌️
In a lot of restaurants yes it is, but a lot of places don’t add this charge too. It depends on the area you stay in 👍 Fuel is totally fine for foreigners, you can use as much as you need here.
Refreshing to see Colombo 7 from the perspective of a traveler, as a resident it feels quite mundane! If you're still in the area, Maniumpathy hotel on Kynsey road is an interesting colonial era home turned luxury hotel to check out
thanks, Luke and Nayomi. You guys are doing great videos. I suggest you try Sri Lanka Wedding. Since you have a lot of friends in SL you may find it easier to the invitation. Ofcourse Tamils and Sinhala Weddings are totally differ. Muslim weddings are different.
even though colombo 7 is still considered as the wealthiest area in colombo, not that many wealthy people actually live there nowadays. it's mostly different offices. majority of the colonial era mansions which was around colombo 7 got demolished and the owners moved to more quiet suburban areas right outside the colombo city limits around kotte, kalaniya.

Try Paradise cafe or simply eat at the hotels or so many pastry shops every block as we stop for tea and we have an array of short eats to cakes! Try a place like Peters and Sons family UWM for over 1/2 a century or Fab! So many eateries like that for affordability and delish!
Colombo is beautiful
Yes ❤
Thank you for the videos and the information you provided, my wife and I will be traveling to Sri Lanka this September, and I have a question, see if you could help us, do you have any suggestions for a cool place where we can stay in Columbo, looking for an area where there's a lot going on, NOT A QUIET AREA. Thank you again.
Heyy u guys passed by my school Musaeus College. Nice to see y'all sightseeing around colombo 7 :)
Lovely video. That service charge is pretty normal anywhere if you dine-in and not take away. Even international franchises like Pizza Hut and McDonald's have it here.
WELCOME TO COLOMBO.
❤❤❤
Being a local, watching foreigners filming and talking about our country is always interesting. Mostly it is because of human nature to compare one with another. When one's environment is described by someone else, it offers an opportunity for the first person to dive into the second one's lifestyle.
If u walk across Colombo7 before 2009.!.. Oooh god will make green zone of bagdhad more like a Disneyland 😂 😂 it was the most protected residential area of the country..... And still heavy militery presence! Yeah.... cos of foreign and locale diplomatic residences addressed in Colombo 7.
✌️
This is very informative.
FYI : Colombo 7 (aka Dehiwala) is literally the Beverly Hills of Sri Lanka
Thank you for the video btw. Sending Love and Support from Sri Lanka

Is it a requirement to pay a 10% tipping surcharge for refreshments and meals.?
How is the fuel availability for foreign tourists purchases ??
In a lot of restaurants yes it is, but a lot of places don’t add this charge too. It depends on the area you stay in 👍
Fuel is totally fine for foreigners, you can use as much as you need here.
Hi 👋 well come back 👋
Refreshing to see Colombo 7 from the perspective of a traveler, as a resident it feels quite mundane! If you're still in the area, Maniumpathy hotel on Kynsey road is an interesting colonial era home turned luxury hotel to check out
Wow nice, thanks for the tips!

Visit the National Museum of Sri Lanka.🙏🇱🇰❤️
❤
even though colombo 7 is still considered as the wealthiest area in colombo, not that many wealthy people actually live there nowadays. it's mostly different offices. majority of the colonial era mansions which was around colombo 7 got demolished and the owners moved to more quiet suburban areas right outside the colombo city limits around kotte, kalaniya.
Thank you for sharing. Enjoy 👍
❤️❤️
