      @@hellogoodbye4061 and what concerns do men have in a world controlled by men? Gloria lived during a time women couldn’t own their own credit cards or bank accounts.

      @@rachaelmarks2 Oh fah sure, men have it so, so, so, so, so easy. My bad!!! Well nothing for us privileged men to do at this point but stand around the fireplace puffing our pipes in our robes and slippers while the lowly women bring us our tea and crumpets while we talk all that patriarchy stuff.
      Damn, feminist man-hater, what a bizarre world in which your mind resides.
      Naturally, you needed to dredge up the past to find any form of oppression today. That credit card thingie, straight out of your gender studies textbook, was cute and all but answer this one straightforward question.
      What rights by law do men have that Western women, the most privileged and entitled subset of society in the history of the world, do not? Now this may be hard to admit, but there are none. But hey, I could be wrong, so in order to show me up, make me appear so so wrong, you only have to name ONE thing. Good luck.....you'll need it.
      Feminism is the radical notion that women are oppressed by a society that caters to their every demand.

    I relate to so many things in this interview but one thing that really hit home was the notion of crying when I am angry. I'm not sure what the reason behind this is but as long as i've known, I have cried when I am angry. And constantly have had reactions from people apologizing for hurting my feelings or telling me not to be sad. It's somewhat humiliating, not to cry, but to be told my feelings are hurt. My crying at things that I deem wrong is not hurt but resilience to what made me angry. I am not sad, I am strong. I am not weak, I know what right and wrong should be.

    At around 16:00, about there being more men than women now in terms of the world's population, China's "one-child only" policy had a lot a do with that, since that culture is historically one of the most extreme patriarchal societies. Countless female fetuses were aborted after that policy was effected. Now China's finally realizing its error by suffering the shortage of women - their men are now importing/buying wives from nearby countries.

    We get whole by venturing into what is considered to be right for the other gender. That makes sense. We miss out on a lot if we strictly stick to our gender roles and what is considered appropriate. Not just socially (e.g. guys learning to be sensitive and girls learning to be leaders), but even just practically. Any girl will be more whole as a human if she understands cars and can fix simple things around the house and any guy - if he can do housework, mend clothes and take care of babies.

    In regards to the arguement that gender equality will be addressed after more "important" issues are solved has been the standard for as long as gender equality rights have been fought for. It had always been a bargaining chip, the carrot before the horse. It has always been we will address your issues after we solve ours, and there has always been inequity. We've always been told we will get ours after we support theirs. And we kept making that exchange, time after time, out of hope. In a way, just to be able to say that we've not been unreasonable, that we've done everything they've asked of us, that we exhausted that resource. So when we decide to no longer put our rights at the mercy of our oppressors, we are villainized. We are demonized as the hysterical group that has to be protected from their own destruction. These arguments have always been the excuses for why we are still denied the right to live as the sole proprietor of our bodies. The right to manifest our own destinies. The right to choose or not choose motherhood, marriage, careers, be homemakers, to love and marry who we want, to live without violence, to not have women murdered, to have our abusers held accountable, to protect our women and children from sexual violence, to heal from our traumas, to end the normalization of trauma, and all on our terms. Oppression has many forms but liberation has only one: total.

    "It's not that we're somehow so wonderful, it's just that we don't constantly have to prove our masculinity" really important statement! Often times feminists claim that they don't have any gender beliefs, but then sooner or later they say something that implies... `we need women in politics/decision-making institutions, because women are seemingly better at it´ and then I sigh... because it's hypocritical to me. I love how Gloria Steinem didn't make that move. With her statement she referred to the different socialisation of men and women, where men have to stay tough and not show any signs of weakness and women are allowed to do that and therefore have a certain liberty at handling things that can be helpful.

  • @anthonyschwartz1084

    Crying is perceived in such a way because it shows that being overwhelmed with emotions disturbs the contribution to rational thinking. There is emotional thinking and rational thinking, to many men (me included) when someone cries it shows weakness on the rational process of that person. Is it wrong to cry? No, but many people don't realize that men and woman are different and deal with things differently, not letting men or women to cry cripples then their ability of expression. What needs to be shared is that crying isn't the solution but a process of regaining strength. It is a great tool when used properly (crying all the time isn't exactly efficient either). People need to learn to balance their emotional and rational expression/thoughts, that is being human, being one or the other "masculine" and "feminine" (or at least perceived that way) and truly know themselves. All of these problems come from lack of confidence in ourselves as individuals and as humankind destroying earth.

    Vey interesting interview. I saw Gloria Steinman on tv yesterday and i watched the tv sereis about her life and activism which was great to be honest, but... on putting women together at a table to end violence (22:00 mins), what about Cristobel Pankhurst and her table of women with the industrial production of white feathers and their army of young girls to hand them out to men of fighting age in Britain at the start of world war one. Of this Lloyd George said something like truly women are ready for, and capable of, the kind of decisions of public office. Trouble is though as with all political decisions someone has to get picked for sacrifice, but women are for the most part protected from any equal consequences of this decision. There is even a long standing tradition of making civilians immune to the consequences of warfare, even if difficult to maintain it is there as a norm and standard. That strangely also gives a privilege to women along with children. The only weapons that would directly impact civilians as well as soldiers are nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, and both are banned. ergo its ok for women to sit around a table and agree to allow the mass destruction of men, while at the same time enjoying immunity and peace campaigning. The later then now looking more like a instrument of particular interest and "women's laws" than some law derived from natural law. If you say this to feminists they just say its: "boys with toys" and "men's wars". There is no attempt to reason about this, its just a strategic move of avoidance and distraction and perhaps to elicit an angry response at the frivolity, so they can then say coercive and abusive male dominant behaviour allowed due to patriarchy. We need more laws to protect women from abusive and harmful male behaviour afforded by and about power. I can take it if its just coming out of a Marxist feminist conflict theory re- ontologised to make gender difference as the fundamental friend/enemy distinction in a Schmittian Political Theology. At least you know its war for absolute dominance in their eyes. But Gloria Steinem seems to couch this in terms of human rights as a identity to gender identity. So then whereas my Marxist feminist "enemy" can just ignore or distract or ad homion me, an equal rights advocate rather than trying tactics to silence me, or cancel me has to answer the question: In what way then is this right or good for me too?

    • @harveyyoung3423
      @harveyyoung3423 Рік тому

      Maybe that's the take away: "The means are the end" (28:00 mins) Gloria Steinem opposes this to Marx Engles (and i guess Lenin) she categories as the maxim: "The end justifies the means". This though i think is also in Marx as the question of praxis from the Critique of "the philosophers" as only interpreting the world What is to be done". the French post structuralists did much to escape this teleological "end justifies the means" norm of revolutionary political activism. What does it mean to make the means the end? Is it like Derrida's notion that justice cannot be given and so cannot be deconstructed. That to me means, as opposed to a utopian vision idea or formulae determining action, rather a continuous revolutions. Theoretically and practically interesting but i wouldn't want top live there. it would mean even jsut in the limits of gender a society in total conflict at all levels from the supreme court to your bedroom. The tools are the legal system and certain institutions like universities and health care corporations. the aim is metaphysical not teleological in that they seek to remove power asymmetries from human relations. they do his by describing all human relations as if mediated by institutions eg the institution of the family as opposed to the old "family of man". They do this by vice of a bad analogy: claiming families are governed by unwritten norms is the same as the family governed by a pseudo hierarchy with a man as the unelected head of the family. I imagine a bit like in the Godfather movie. "Patriarchy" here was from its use in anthropology as I recall the fallacy of thinking all organisations are structured like an institution. This though is not a methodological or category mistake or other sort of error, it is a necessary but incorrect abduction in order to use the law and medicine to change what were previously private spaces. That is straight from enlightenment law and politics and science man is first self interested and at war everywhere there is not laws and power to enforce them. So that means form this orientation a family is in state of war without law and power over it mediating it. Making the means the end implies then that the aim is to take control of the whole of society all the way down, and all the way up, a totalitarianism, but one that situates itself as about the ends of rule of law, positive rights, and minorities, and oppressed, but it seems these supposed anti totalitarian aims (as it was expressed by liberalism after word war two) are really not the point, the point is legal and medical take over. We haven't got to grips with the fact that totalitarianism can take many forms and architypes. Even laws and rights that appear opposed to totalitarianism can become, when made teleological, a new kind of totalitarianism. especially when the only recognised value system now is the law and the only evil is the absence of law or bad law which is seen then as subject to the brutal use of power and force. which then requires in this myth of the family at war, an even bigger omnipotent omniscient (and the other one) system of institutions to be run by women as "carer lawyers for power". tasking over civil society is the pseudo aim disguised as an aim for justice equality and protection of vulnerability. That is correcting apparent asymmetries of power though law and heath care and overseeing institutions then is an "end in itself"? equality is the pseudo teleological excuse.
      Might revisit some dead white men: Kant, Marx, Derrida on praxis. to do a better job of interpretation here.

    • @harveyyoung3423
      @harveyyoung3423 Рік тому

      On "the means being the end": perhaps a liberal feminist approach could accommodate this as the shift from a negative view of rights and freedoms, that is Rights as freedom from governmental power, and freedom as just not being prevented by force. This is traditionally contrasted with the notions of positive Rights and freedoms which, from Isaiah Berlin (Essay on Liberty), meant an: external to the person definition of the good human being, the good life, the healthy or safe life, it can be teleological like in Natural law as concern the person means the need to make the person into that model. Berlin allowed the former but thought the latter was basically the view of freedom of totalitarian regimes. Indeed i believe this shows us the strange link we can find in history between the far left the far right and theocracies. They have an ideal person in mind, and how to make them. i guess Foucault's Critique of mental health would also be a critique of this which we call a critique of normative images of people from authority.
      But things have moved on since the 1950's. So perhaps say Martha Nussbaum's notions of capability can be expressed not as a positive freedom or positive right but the capacity to act to choose etc. Freedom to here is not meant to be about constructing a person then, but reconstructing society such that people can exercise freedom as a capacity, and so giving people the "means" to use freedom.
      Alternatively it seems from reading that "radical feminism" is said to be about the actualisation of freedom through institutions like heath care welfare education reform of civil society (Hegel) really its metaphysics and ontology is about power relations in and through which there are asymmetries that can be discovered in synchronic data differences of wealth and diachronic historical repetitions and reasons. in this repetition through institutions takes the place of Marx's repetitious passive workers before they achieve class consciousness though struggle and education or ideology removal by experts.
      Tactically liberal feminism and radical feminism can look the same on the surface, the same actions, but really they are radical opposed in terms of world view, aims and strategy. In the early stages of political praxis these can be indistinguishable from outside. Indeed the radical feminist would be crazy to just conduct a praxis that is too different from the existing state of affairs. Modern praxis draws heavily on Derrida Foucault and Deleuze who all see revolutions not as so much a radical break from history but a process from within the existing order. If i was to stake money on a thinker here it would be i guess Amy Allen "The end of Progress"(2016) the year of this interview. I would contrast this with Rahel Jaeggi in "Critique of Forms of Life" and another i can't remember. This is discussed in the context of praxis by Bernard E. Harcourt in Critique and Praxis (2020) My bible of this political praxis turn. The question is to articulate the notions of incremental progress that does not presuppose and aim or a end or utopia. To use John McDowell's Google lecture on "Intention In Action" it is like knowing you are crossing a road and getting further without reference to the other side. But of course the progress here is really at the metaphysical level of life, it seeks to change people in accord with the asymmetry of power, even if it just looks like instituional change as Gloria Steinem says it involves changes in dispositions. This is not so alien to liberal capitalism effects for they ask us to change in terms of increasing our human capital skills education for the market. That process of increasing efficiency can be put as an aim of increasing total GDP or just in terms of increasing the persons wealth which is not simply end driven since it does not need to refer immediately to the total GDP. But hen it can look like Berlin's positive freedom in that they are after a perfect worker in a perfect working environment. It became Taylorism and this was applied to the home, the private home now called the domestic realm, reasoned as domestic science, and brought in by a woman genius industrial chemist who applied the ideas to workers homes. This has no clear end in a dynamic capitalist economy as what constitutes perfection here is a relation to the multipolicy of the ever changing market. This too me looks very like radical feminism which seeks in the home not more efficiency but less power asymmetry in home and society. Since power is intersectional then this also is a relation to an ever changing environment of justice and inequality metrics. So not a simple external set aim. Thing is someone is in your house in your soul telling you how to be more efficient and less less disposed to exploit power asymmetries. Ironically these are not opposed projects, but can be in tandem. Which can mean the radical feminist have been captured by liberal capitalism, or that they are using liberal feminism as a ladder to climb up through the contemporary world to then throw away when used and take up whatever Radical tools they can find. This needs more work from me I think folks.
