- The 310 Km Moonrakers and Sunseekers Audax started just before 10PM in Bristol on Friday November 19th.
I hope you enjoy the video, here are the highs, the lows, the experiences and any other information I thought to document. It was a great event, lots of friendly riders, fantastic organisation. But would I do such a thing again... Time heals all wounds.

The important thing to remember is the challenge in Audax is to finish inside the time limit (20hours for a 300km). As long as you do that it doesn't matter if you're first back or last back you've still completed the challenge.
So that’s what it’s like at the pointy end?! All those people. Audax enables everyone to have a go. I still have no idea how I avoided crashing on the Strawberry Line at dusk. I still can’t believe I had no problem with tiredness/blanking at all. Amazing organisation by Great Western Randonees. Finished in Audax time just (Full value finish time was later than 5pm) still got a plate of delicious curry even though everyone else was long gone. Great recap, thank you.
That was great fun. Cold and exhausting at points but so good!
Awesome effort.
I have to confess, I really enjoy riding at night. Sure the risks from bad roads, other clowns on the road are higher than during the day but the still of the night is wonderful.
It is great riding at night, I do definitely enjoy it, too! There's an interesting calm and peace that comes from it.
It was my first overnight and 300km ride. Great route and fantastic weather. Strangely enough, despite a hard week at work, I didn’t suffer the dozies at any point. Amazing what the body and mind can do. I started at 22.35 and finished at 13.40 so 15 hours total - I’ll take that. Thanks for the film to remind me of a classic ride. PS no punctures for me with my 32mm Panaracer Gravelking slicks. Handled everything perfectly.
Great video Chris. Sadly I wasn't the first to finish either but I enjoyed riding with you. Let's hope Alex is as good as his word and I see you on another ride soon!
Thank you Simon. Great riding on Friday/Saturday. What was your finish time? I could well be tempted, now the fatigue has slipped away.
Nice to meet you Simon. Shall certainly see you again on another one. Great ridding with you!
@@chrisopie87 I think I made it in at 11:30 - was too tired to check! I'll keep an eye out for you in future events - I'm hoping I might get to ride PBP in 2023 so I'll be doing quite of few of these, I guess.
@@alexboswell you too, Alex. Let us know if you're evert coming up this direction again.
PBP would be a great one to do.
Rode this one also - I think we leapfrogged each other a few times as I now recognise the pair of orange jackets and scoping those chonky tyres at podimore. If I'd known I'd have said hi, Ended up being a great night/day of riding and well done on being soo coherent on video, Id defo have struggled! . 🙌🏽👌🏽
Amazing effort Chris, thank you for sharing your adventure!
My wife ended up watching with me and she said what a lovely, genuine guy you are. Look forward to more contents from you!
Thank you!! Hope you both enjoyed it.
Do an equipment video. I’d love to see what lights you used
Well done Chris ..finished and still smiling ,i wouldnt have fancied the drive home though
Great effort. Hope you had a well deserved kip. I hope that these ventures into the other types of cycling are giving you plenty of enjoyment and a feeling of achievement. Keep up the good work. 👍 💪
Thank you Gareth! It really is enjoyable trying new disciplines/adventures in cycling. Looking forward to many more.
@@chrisopie87 well if you are ever back up and around the levels would happily fund your coffee stop ☕
Thank you, I do love the roads around there. Even more so when it's windy.
Great ride, Chris. These audax challenges through the night have to be a real battle of the mind to get through. Well done! :)
Thank you. It certainly was a challenge. One that in worse conditions I think I would have struggled to conquer…
Way to go! Could you please do a short video on the tech/gear you used for this ride? You talked about the light, but were so exhausted you forgot to mention brand!
I think I got a saddle sore just watching this. Such a great accomplishment
Really enjoyed the ride. My first overnighter and 300km audax. I started at 10pm and briefly saw you at the scout hut and I think we went passed you when were sorting out the puncture / having a nap! Keep up the good work with the vlogs, I really enjoy them.
Superb ride! I Captained my first Fleche ride in May this year, riding 380km over 24 hours. Riding through the night was an interesting experience. We had a great team of 5 guys. It was a fun ride. I think everyone needs to give it a try!
Top Stuff! (again!)
Thank you Gary!
Great vlog on the event, the colours of Autumn really were awesome. Scary to see myself on here @ Yatton station.
Impressive! You just love riding your bloody bike don’t you?! Any bike any time, that’s Chris Opie.
I definitely do Mark… talking of which, when are we riding next?
What an amazing ride. You rode past my town, although you would of probably not noticed as it's only a small place and you went by on the bypass. I recognised the section from Boscombe to Sandbanks. This is definitely a lot busier in the day during the summer! If you do this route again in the warmer months, I'm sure it'll be another memorable trip!
This looked fun? Enjoyed watching!
Thanks for the great mini "interview"/ informal chat in the holding pen at the start it was great to ride out with you out of Bristol. Hope you and Alex had a great ride? Probably be another week before I post my ride video - I am in that rare position of having a backlog of videos to edit together after enjoying a 4 day break exploring Wales last weekend.
How was the ride for you? We definitely had a good ride, memorable! Exploring Wales must have been brilliant?
@@chrisopie87 At 14:45 you can see the redness of your eyes... happens to us all on these night rides. Yeah it was good, the dirty bit ended up with me later up the road having a slow puncture and later replacing it and applying a tyre boot before reaching the Strawberry line so not completely trouble-free. Wales was epic as always, everywhere you go is breathtaking, I love my mountains, the more challenging the better, up and over a couple of mountain passes on one of the days, with some pretty spectacular views over remote farmland, barren remote land and even spotted a couple of waterfalls.
11:07 i could not agree more!!!
Well done, Chris. I once did a 425km ride in one day and I swore I'd never do it again and I've stayed true to my word. LOL Interesting bike choice but you can't fault it given the reliability. Looking forward to the next instalment. Hope all is well.
Thanks Chris for the video, well done on the journey.
Great vlog.. keep them coming Chris. 🚴🏼🚴🏼
you guys crazyyyyy
Good effort Chris. Maybe not your kind of type2 fun, but you stuck at it 👏👏
Thank you. Oddly feeling much more positive about it now the fatigue has declined.
Thanks for creating the vlog of the ride, it helped me reaffirm that'll never do a ride that requires sleep deprivation. ☺
Awesome ride Chris 👏🏾 You’re a legend ✊🏾
There are all sorts of fun 😊
Very true!
Nice! When I did this route in 2019, I was able to take a detour so that the 200 km mark was conveniently at home, got some food and a proper power nap. It was about 10am, I wasn't far off being the lantern rouge.
Bravo!!! looks like it was great fun!!
Thank you James, it was a real novelty.
Realy great thank you for sharing well done
Thank you Treve!
Great job. I must do this solo where I live. Is it safer. And less fumes. But might be reckless driving at late evening.
Good job Chris. Can you give's a bike setup rundown; what actual tyres, P, your new rims, bags etc and what the weight would have been(Vs 14.x kgs) if you knew then what you know now about carrying too much? Thanks
Ooh, good question! It normally weighs under 11kg kgs (Alu frame that is built to carry a load and last, it has a dropper post and gravel groupset) when set up for road rides. I had the wide rimmed Alt wheels, 40mm depth. With Pirelli Cinturato 40mm tyres. 55 front and 60psi rear I also have Vittoria foam inserts in and lots of sealant. I probably didn't need more than one spare light, needn't have taken the top tube bag and possibly could have used smaller bottles.
Whether or not the 3kgs would have made a difference to the end result, enjoyment and time is negligible. But the thought of carrying excess spares weighed me down.
Great vid, was a fun to watch.
Please, can you tell us something about the lights you are using?
Thank you Roland! I used a combination of Magicshine UK lights. Predominantly the monteer 3500 on a low setting. Then the monteer 8000 for anything that needed the equivalent of daylight.
Nice ride, Chris. Fancy a bit of Paris-Brest-Paris action?
Looked a great Ride Chris. Top effort 300km over night😱👏👏
Thank you Fred!
@@chrisopie87 👍 great to see you back on the videos. They are really mindful and make you think. 👍
I'm pleased to hear you find that, I can't always guarantee the frequency, but hopefully they're remain mindful and useful to people watching.
Was a great event - highly recommended. Though that rainy dark stretch to Podimore between 4am - 7am was grim!
That really was a tough grind, hope you made it through it ok?!
@@chrisopie87 yeah just kept stuffing my face with cookies :D
That stretch to Podimore was definitely the tough bit. Crawling up hills with legs that were empty, in drizzle.
I wouldn’t have made it out of the pub at the start point! Great effort, well done. Was that all on GRX gravel gearing?
Well don😊👍🏻👍🏻.
Rather you than me 😂 massive ride.
Haha, I was thinking the same thing at the end. Anyone but me ..
Hi Chris, would model of front light did you use? Apologies if you mentioned it. Looking for one that can use on road for ages on low power settings and maybe off road too. The one your using looks like one of the Magicshine systems?
CRAY CRAY IN A GOOD WAY 🤘
😅thank you Brian!
Totes.
Awesom ride. What tyres did you run.
That was good!
Thank you Mike!
Were you worried that your wahoo batetery was going to die, Chris?
Great video Chris! I did the ride as well, and saw you guys go past early on. My first overnight ride and finished around 11.30am. Very enjoyable, with some great people although a few tough times when the legs struggled.
Question: What light set up did you use? How much of the battery capacity did you use?
(My light used far more than it should have - I chose a 12/24 programme mode so it should have been fine. If riding on my own I might have run out. Luckily I ran on low power setting for some time as I was with others, and I had a small emergency one)
Well…views not the best butupside is that roads aren’t too busy in the middle of the night i guess 🤪💪
Ha, very true!! Sadly the views aren’t amazing in the daylight here, either… quiet roads were appreciated!
That video made me feel cold, tired and wanting cake!
Haha, I can relate to that!
It's an Audax, cake is very much encouraged!
Don’t leave it there for riding audaxes, really enjoyed that vid!
