  • As Japan's biggest movie star, Ken Watanabe has performed in Hollywood movies such as The Last Samurai, Godzilla & Inception. But it's off the big screen where Ken plays his greatest role of all; rebuilding a town devastated by a tsunami. I spent a week with Ken to hear his inspiring story.

NOTIFICATION SQUAD: So it seems dreams do come true! To say I feel incredibly lucky would be an understatement. After all these years, I’d have been happy just to take a photo with Ken, let alone spent a day or even A WEEK together. I realise we left a lot of questions unanswered and there’s a chance this won’t be the last time we see Ken on Abroad in Japan. But it’s been a privilege to share this side of Ken’s life that most people would never have known about. An incredible man and an inspiring story.

A man starts 10 years ago in a tiny room with nothing and slowly over time shows us the whole of Japan. It’s beauty, it’s people, it’s heart and soul. He does this through cynicism and sarcasm. He shows us how great a friend he can be, he shows us how the people of Japan are taking to him and showing their spirit amidst natural disasters and man made ones. In the end he fulfils his dream and the last picture of him is a huge smile. What a journey……what a privilege it has been to see him grow and become just wonderful. Yes Japan has given you so much, but you have given back too. Godspeed on your future adventures. I think you made a new friend in Ken.

I can't believe that he got to spend an entire week chatting with and eating with one of the all time great youtubers.

Did Chris really meet up with Ken Watanabe, or is this just a dream within a dream?? Seriously though, congratulations! Always good to see hard work pay off

This is a really epic moment. To know how long you've been wanting to make this happen and now seeing it happen is awesome. Ken is a legend, thanks for sharing this Chris.

NGL, the inception bit at the end made us jumped out of our seats!! That was such a epic tie-in! I’m just glad this was all Ken’s dream and there will still be more Abroad in Japan content in the future 😅

I spent just 2 days with Ken, Koyuki and Tom Cruise because they filmed a few scenes of the last samurai in an old farmer's house i own near Engyo-ji, and they also slept at the Inn a friend owns there. but i wasn't allowed to film them at all.

I don't know why, but this man, even by looks alone, seems to be humble and down to earth. I think, there somewhere inside, he nailed what it means to live

You know shits about to get real when Chris is in his formal attire. I mean, he appeared in Japanese TV with nothing but a polo and some pants, so I can tell that this is indeed a very precious experience for him, and for us for sticking all those years with him.

This is why I love OG UA-camrs! Chris went from filming 144p video about his tiny bedroom apartment in middle of nowhere Japan to literally meeting Ken Watanabe years later! Dreams indeed can come true and this video is truly inspiring.

When somebody says to you "バカだね” with a smile on their face, you know they like you. This was a fantastic video and your sincerity and honesty throughout was great and your portrayal of Ken Watanabe absolutely wonderful.
