'Greed' was an international cash prize game show which applied similar gameplay conventions to that of 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'. Adapted from Fox's original American series, the UK version was hosted by Jerry Springer and had a £1 Million jackpot. It aired on Channel 5 from May 18th to June 9th 2001, ending after just 11 episodes.
To my knowledge the UK series has never been repeated. After sifting through various websites, I managed to locate TWO clips which I have uploaded here for entertainment purposes only; I do not intend any infringement of copyright by doing so.
This particular clip is of the final question in the series from Episode 11.

It's so strange seeing Shaun Wallace with hair...
superflipper76 agreed
Thought it was him
For those that were unaware, Springer was actually born in England.
OMG LOOK AT SHAUNS HAIR!!!!! Lol now he doesn’t have any.... does anyone recognise him? (From The Chase)
Wow! This is a rare finding of Jerry Springer hosting the UK version of "Greed." Can you believe he started out as Mayor of Cincinnati, then hosting a talk show and now has his court show "Judge Jerry"? A man of many talents!
Interesting! Thank you for sharing. :)
Agreed.
And we see Shaun Wallace before he would become famous on The Chase as The Dark Destroyer.
I preferred the us version to the british version
Interesting that Jerry finished the terminator question after Pooee buzzed in..
shawn is now on the chase
since they didn't give the categories for the last 4 questions, it was kinda obvious that they didn't want to give away the big money.
this makes me wonder, we all know how smart shaun is, who thinks that even though they didn't give the categories, that shaun would've had a decent shot to win the million pounds HAD he decided to go on. (I doubt he would've went for the million.) although i could have seen him trying for the half million.)
I think had he been on his own, he would've went for the 500k question, and maybe the million if he liked the 500k question
Just another day at the office
Preference:
Design: US. UK looks too bright and colorful.
Music: US. While UK got great music, the US has amazing tracks that all fit with the dark, aggressive nature of the game. UK has some tracks that are too lighthearted.
Host: Both. Chuck and Jerry are unique in their own ways. Chuck is a bit more chill and sympathetic, especially to losing contestants while Jerry lays down the cold savage truth, almost like Anne Robinson and the average Weakest Link host. Both are entertaining and great with the contestants.
Announcer: US. Mark's deep and quite scary voice is perfect for the dark nature of the show while the UK announcer seems a bit happy.
Intro: UK. Love the UK visuals that lead from the animation to the (wall?) of the studio, to the actual game studio. US only has that brief showing of the title along with the flashback from last episode and then onto the game.
The American version (with Chuck Woolery) was a whole lot better than this. That set and format looked so much better.
Amen to that.
and the music!
RIP Jerry Springer. Listen closely you can hear the Temptation theme (USA 2007).
From memory, her real name was Alison but her younger sister couldn't pronounce it so she called her "Pooee" instead! haha
R.I.P., Jerry Springer.
R.I.P. Jerry Springer
Jerry Springer was actually born in London, but based in the U.S. due to his long-running talk show that just won't quit.
Until now.
@@cutemimi25 And now he's got a judge show on American television like Judge Judy! lol
He was actually born in Highgate Underground Station in the middle of an air raid
Pooee has been chosen by the terminator twice.
For the £100,000 question ; she wants to challenge Ted ; Everybody plays for £20,000 except for Pooee who will play for £40,000 with the £5,000 that she won from the terminator.
For the £250,000 pound question ; she wants to challenge Angela; Rob and Shaun would play for £50,000 while Pooee will play for £150,000. She got £5,000 more for challenging. So that's £10,000 for Pooee ; no matter if she wins or lose.
£250,000
Rob and Shaun both has £50,000 while Pooee has £150,000 with the £10,000 from the terminator.
3:03 seemed like Rob did pull out his hair lol
Pooee, the terminator has chosen you again. Is there anyone on this team you want to call out for £5,000 win or lose.
Pooee: I want to challenge Angela.
Oh, Angela. Here we go. Let's go to the terminator zone.
Angela, because you have been challenged, you will be on the challenged side. Pooee, because you're challenging, you'll be on the challenger side. Pooee, you got £5,000 before and now you got another £5,000 because first she challenged Ted and now it's Angela. So you got £10,000 - that is yours to keep no matter if you win or lose.😊
I like it but it doesn't feel as dramatic as the American version. Maybe it's the music, although I like it, it doesn't have the same tension as the American. The lighting on the set is too bright and cheerful in my opinion, I like the dark vault-like setting on the other one. This is one the rare shows where the American version spawns the UK one, and the American one outdoes it in my opinion. This is not a bad show because it holds onto the format (and that format is killer) but it's no surprise this show didn't work in the UK considering it failed pretty badly in the US as well.
Chris D'Avanzo coincidentally, both highest winning teams in US and UK had their final question on the 90's
Chris D'Avanzo I think the only reason Greed did badly in the US was because it went up against Millionaire and The Simpsons
it was only cancelled because the then fox president hated game shows.
@@mrbow50001 The Simpsons didn't matter as they were produced by the same company for the same network, being #2 on the overall would have been fine
Interesting to see Pooee pop up again in Lightning this year.
and Tenable.
Never knew that!
Jerry Springer hosted the Jerry Springer Show.
Really?
I think this is one of the very few game shows on Channel 4 or Channel 5 to air once a week. All other game shows that have aired on Channel 4 and Channel 5 have aired daily even if it aired at night.
Andrew Hain the million pound drop is another example also the bank job.
I vaguely remember this show existing, but never watched it. It seemed to be, and surely was, attempting to cash in on the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire phenomenon. But there were tons of those kinds popping up left, right and centre so another one didn't catch my attention. But actually, seeing it now, it looks really good. I think the problem with it, is that maybe it's overly complicated. They're not allowed to talk, it seems, but they can make gestures which renders that rule pointless. He can play his joker, or whatever. They can do this, he can decide that. Unless he chooses to... in which case... then a head to head and a chance to... Woah, hold it there. I know that a game needs rules, and I'm not saying that dumbing down is the right thing to do. But a good game is suffocating under all these twists and turns. Part of the success of Millionaire was its simplicity. 15 questions, 3 lifelines, a general double-your-money progression. Done. Greed needed to make the rules a lot easier to follow, there's too much going on.
I'm surprised that early Channel 5 could support a million pound jackpot. And Jerry Springer wouldn't have come cheap, he was top of the tree at that point. I think Greed may have been a victim of over saturation of the Millionaire clones around in the early 2000's. And being on a channel which struggled to gain any notable viewing figures for anything. I think Channel 5's highest viewing figure ever is only around 5 million, so Greed was hardly likely to be a serious threat to Millionaire. Had it arrived before Millionaire and pushed out on ITV, I think it may have been quite the phenomenon that Millionaire became. I can see something special in it.
I agree with everything that you’ve said! :)
Maybe it's just me...but i follow the rules verry good)
@@JKL_YT Yeah, I may have exaggerated a little to make a point. But my first impression was that it didn't have a clear game at its core. With Millionaire, they just slammed a question onto the screen and that was the game understood, right there, immediately. A double-your-money progression towards a million pounds. And whilst there were some slightly more complex factors, such as the lifelines and fastest finger, they were easy to follow once you picked up on the general idea of the game. But all I get from Greed, is that there's a million pound jackpot and lots of varying mini-games within a wishy-washy core game to get there. I've no doubt that it makes sense once you get into it, but I feel that its failure was in not having a clear hook to grab the passing viewer with. Which is a shame, because I did start to get into it in this clip. But back in the day, when it was airing on Channel 5, I knew about it but gave it a miss because I didn't care to learn it. It just struck me as an overly complicated Millionaire rip-off.
@@97channel I think it is just a really, overly-complicated game. One you have to be fully immersed in to understand.
It's also far too slow. 12 minutes for a sub question and a main question? You can fit 5 questions of Millionaire in during that time. A whole segment of The Chase lasts for that long.
Angela shouldn't have begged. Look at it this way, she set herself up as the next Terminator target.
The very same person!
that IS shaun wallace?
Yep. Before he would become a future Chaser known as the Dark Destroyer.
To those asking why that particular contestant's name is Pooee, earlier in the episode (before the start of this clip), she said what her actual name was (can't remember what, though) but a relative of hers that was only young couldn't pronounce it, so said 'Pooee' as a nickname.
+Keshihead What a strange name for a woman!
Tell me about it. I'm SMH over that. Obviously her parents must not have had her best interests in mind when naming her.
Someone literally said she explained that wasn’t her given name.
Read description.
Everybody plays for £50,000 except for Pooee plays for £100,000.
3:37
Haha, that is unfortunate, I think Bridget or Jones might have been more appropriate.
0:29 those who are not on the 'sock exchange' (because of the man who hosted greed uk who host a talk show that has fights)
We also had the same show in Russia, but it wasn't popular. BTW, has anyone ever won the jackpot in British "Greed"?
+1993kaban The UK version only ran for 11 episodes - I didn't think that it could be less popular haha (!) And no, this clip shows the highest win of the UK version.
@@JRP90 in Russia only one time gamers answered for 6 questions))
Why would you name your kid Pooee?!?
I take it the host didn't provide any categories on this version.
In earlier episodes of the UK version, the host did advise teams of what the category of the next question would be, however towards the end of the series this was stopped.
i have to ask, what woulda happened if shaun had decided to go for it?
I guess the episode would've been re-edited so that the following question(s) could fit into the allotted timeslot?
Wheeloffortunefan99and the £500k question would of been 8 possible 4 correct (7 possible if he used the freebie)
not what i meant,
I will give the challenger £5,000 to play the showdown whether they win or lose.
£100,000 ; One will play for £40,000 and the other three will play for £20,000
£250,000 ; One will play for £150,000 and the other two will play for £50,000
My God Jerry Springer Hosted the UK Version? I rather Watch the US Version with Chuck Woolery! but I Tip my Hat to Jerry for trying also!
Pooee can't be her actual name...
Jerry Springer is British by birth.
15.15
That was so easy for the captain to figure out.
4:34
funny hair chaser lol.
Jerry Springer hosted the UK version of Greed!?... No wonder that version didn't last long. The US version only lasted a little less than a year.
oh shut up! that is NOT why the show was cancelled and you know it.
+Wheeloffortunefan999 You would be correct, neither version was able to get as much views as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
actually now that I think about it............. didn't Jerry have his own Show at this Time the US one Aired? How could Jerry be doing 2 Different Shows at once?
Because the shows didn’t record at the same times? He probably did Greed during a break of The Jerry Springer Show.
he acts and speaks like a very dull american.
You have the dark destroyer on your side!!!!
R.I.P. Jerry Springer
