What a drag! This is an exciting game. I was 15 when this gameshow was trying to find a home. Growing up in the 80’s gameshows were everywhere. Like Press your luck, Price is right, card sharks and classic concentration. On a roll would’ve been a nice addition to all the other gameshows.
They were the Doublemint twins at the time. The previous twins from the commercials were Jean and Liz Sagal, stars of the sitcom Double Trouble. Their older sister is Katey Sagal (Married with Children, Futurama, Sons of Anarchy)
@@JoeyLamontagne The bonus round is similar to The $1,000,000 Chance Of A Lifetime though. The only TPIR elements are some of the sound effects and a portion of the win/outro cue for the Showcase Showdown.
Never saw this game show before. This game show pilot was mashed up of “Wheel of Fortune”, “High Rollers” and “$1,000,000 Chance Of A Lifetime”. The endgame is “Lucky 7” which was stolen from a pricing game from “The Price Is Right”, and it was a ripoff of the bonus round which was used in the “$1,000,000 Chance Of A Lifetime” where one of the couple are going to the isolation booth to win the money, or go for $1,000,000. What a mess. There is also a 3D Mark Goodson Productions logo at the end which was kinda freaked out. The same pilot can be found on Wink Martindale’s YT channel.
David Sparks as I remember was also hosting a revival of "Crosswits" (originally hosted by Jack Clark in the late '70s) in syndication when this was done.
He was better on Crosswits, too - seemed a better fit for the flow of that game. This one is a bit clunky, combining elements of "High Rollers" with "Wheel Of Fortune". I also find his constant effusiveness irritating - how many times can a host stall for time by wishing players "good luck"??? 😂😄😆
Disagree- Sparks actually showed a slight amount of personality here. He was monotone and dull on Crosswits, so bad he could put you to sleep. In any event, he’s a lousy host.
Tim Butler was a contestant on *"The $100,000 Pyramid"* in spring, 1986! He was in the show's third, big tournament; along with finalists Barb Phillips (previously, of *"$ale of The Century"* fame...) and Patty Geiger. As we game show nerds know, it was Patty who beat them both out of the $100,000 prize... Tim later went on to become an associate producer for *"Pyramid"* when the show returned in 1991, with John Davidson as host... :-)
The lights of the set were great. The theme song needed more vivacity. But the Mark Goodson ending, moreover, makes me feel hungry 😋 if I saw the logo on an empty tummy. It looks like a sandwich!!😋
Or if said opponent rolled a number that couldn't be used (say, if he rolled a 3, and there was no 1, 2, or 3 on the board), then you could choose any unrevealed tile that didn't have a blocker on it, so a #12 could have been used that way.
He's a doctor now in a sleep clinic. Had a conversation with him and tried to get an interview for my blog. He doesn't want to talk about game shows anymore.
@@drummingdanny84 - Not really. He hosted a revival of Crosswits and proved far inferior to Jack Clark. And then he hosted one of the biggest piles of garbage of all time in "All About The Opposite Sex".
This pilot ripoffs several game shows-"High Rollers","Wheel of Fortune"," and $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime". The endgame "Lucky 7" is a pricing game from "The Price is Right". I could see why this didn't make it to air.
+Greg Palmer Not that I have anything against David Sparks (he did an okay job), but if I were one of the producers, I would've chosen Alex Trebek to host the pilot.
15:41-So that's where part of the old TPIR Showcase Showdown comes from. If it were aired today, they would use the pre-match vs. cue from either Marvel Super Heroes or the win cue from Anderson Feud.
+Pierre Kelly Or maybe even the last notes of the Mindreaders theme, like what the Puzzlers and Star Words pilots used as win cues. Hell, they could've even used the last few notes of the Dawson/Combs/later O'Hurley/Harvey Feud theme as a win cue like what Trivia Trap used. EDIT: Just realized-- the 1983 Body Language pilot also used the last notes of the Mindreaders theme as a win cue.
The art department at CBS TV CITY produced those type of graphics for game shows. They still do to this day but mostly for TPIR for SOME of their pricing games like Double Prices, Squeeze Play and Cover Up just to name a few.
And I thought Bill Rafferty and John Davidson's game show careers were short lived but not compared to this guy. What happened to David Sparks anyway? He hosted this along with a very short lived reboot of Crosswitts and then just vanished.
He is now a sleep doctor and does not wish to discuss his hosting career. I did have an interview scheduled with him for my blog but he reneged and hung up on me. The Sklar brothers are absolutely correct. He is a tool.
I can see why this didn't make it to air. I got to say I lost some respect for Goodson after watching this pilot. He was known for using original ideas for his shows yet this clearly rips-off three different shows and doesn't execute any of them well (Those being High Rollers, Wheel of Fortune and The $1,000,000 chance of a lifetime). I also got to say the rules are a little weird. Why 4 rolls for one correct answer? That just seems arbitrary. Speaking of arbitrary you can't roll doubles yet in one of the puzzles it required a 12 to reveal a letter. How can you see it since rolling a twelve would force you to lose your turn? Even weirder in this pilot if you rolled a 3 and a 4 you can only knock out numbers 3, 4 and 7 only (and not any number that adds up to 7 like in High Rollers). That makes playing the game that much more difficult than it really needs to be. Thankfully on the third pilot they adjusted it so it was more fair to play. Also I wasn't a fan of the twins. They were less creepy in this pilot but in the third one they reminded me of the twins from the shining. Also at 12:55 you can hear one of them rooting for doubles for one of the contestants. lol Now for the positives the set was pretty cool for the time and Sparks I thought did a good job at hosting.
+HappySnoutHour Goes to show that he was running out of original ideas. After this, the only other shows he got on the air were revivals of previous ones (ie. Family Feud, Now You See It). Even though he produced "Classic Concentration", the rights to that belong to NBC, and he just leased it to produce that and the 70s version with Jack Narz.
@@bluebear1985 But those revivals were good ones. Card Sharks '86 was good, and so was Family Feud '88. It's just too bad that, to make room for those shows, they moved Press Your Luck to a bad timeslot where it ultimately died and canceled The $25,000 Pyramid. I've never seen "Now You See It", so I don't know if it was good or not.
You’ll never convince me that this isn’t Bill Heder hosting the show.

We had the best game shows in the 80s didn’t we?
It's no wonder this show didn't make it past the pilot stage. I can't picture this having had any kind of longevity.
Do you know high rollers?
It Mostly Copied Wheel Of Fortune.
That opening sequence with the creepy twins is enough to drive the entire audience away.

So you can't roll a double. Okay, simple enough, except how would you uncover the #12 panel?
I believe you could choose it if your opponent rolled doubles.

The dice table here looked hideous. They should've use the moving table similar to High Rollers. And the size of the dice is too damn small.
