  • Woodley showed signs of promise throughout 1981 & 1982. He lead the 82 Dolphins to the Super Bowl, throwing 5 TD’s throughout the playoffs. However, the Dolphins drafted Dan Marino in 1983 and that marked the beginning of the end of his career.

Those days as a young teen at the orange bowl watching this team in the sun was a thrill. They didn't have the greatest talent on offense but their defense had some solid talent and were exciting. And , regardless this team between 1981 to 1983 when Woodley started up until he was benched for Marino was 24-9-1 when Woodley started. And that included a 3-2 record in playoffs with an AFC Championship win and Super Bowl loss.
I'll never forget those days of Woodley and Strock. And, they were a thrill to watch during this time because they weren't the Most talented team, they just played with a lot of heart and intelligence. I rarely ever saw them lose in the Orange Bowl. In fact at one time, under Shula they were 100-21-1 at the Orange Bowl. The day they left, the team was never the same. We, the fans, could raise such a ruckus, that many a time we were so loud QBs from the other team would stop play and complain they could not call their signals. Those were some of the funnest times of my life.
    RIP: David Woodley.

Very well put. The travesty is he would have rather played to an empty stadium. He refused to do endorsements, stating, once you do that, they own you. When traded to Pittsburgh and after 84 Art Rooney offered him the most he had ever offered a play. He chose to retire the reason I say travesty is that he was a very good person, non selfish and friendly. As an athlete he had great feet and speed eith a rocket arm. He was always on the verge of sustaining his growth and then just one boo would set him back. The biggest travesty is that today. He would not have been part of a 2 QB system coming out a running school and would have been nfl ready as he was only drafted in the later rounds because of his 79 tangerine bowl appearance where he truly shined. David would have been a first rounder and what we see today. Yeah, he was that good. He took those interception personally and they wouldn't even be in today's game. He's one of the most pure athlete the Dolphins ever had. Just too bad there wasn't today with qb coaches and systems with don't touch the Brady rules and every chance to improve and succeed. The other side of that is that he wasn't materialistic at all. This poor kid held everything in. Today we have sports psychologists. It wasn't David's time. As a dolphin fan, his tenure were the most exciting to watch and that includes the undefeted years and the Marino choke years.
Jimmy Cefalo was once interviewed and they wanted to get him to name drop Dan Marino name. The posed the question. Who had the strongest arm that you ever played with. He said David Woodley without a second thought and said he hated warming up with him before the game.my hands still hurt! Rest in price David

      OK few non popular facts.
1- dolphins fans in 83 were NOT happy about Marino. Woodley was far more athletic and ball control. The 82 AFC title game in the mud hole 14-0 vs the super rival NYJ was stellar.
2- dolphins ENDED WOODLEYS PLAYING CAREER.
He was traded to PITTSBURG and was blistering opponents for Don Coryell.
Then came the vs Miami game where the dolphins TARGETTED HIM and game him a career ending concussion.
Bill Arnsberger was like a defensive legend to me UNTIL THAT DAY where in my mind he was an ultimate asshole. Shula too.
Some things you just do not option to do.
This was your guy who you dumped for a glory boy. Stat wise Woodleys numbers looked a hell of alot better than Marinos IN SUPER BOWLS - AND For a long time that 1 Woodley pass play vs the redskins was the shortest timed touchdown play/drive in superbowl history.
Note: 82 super bowl was RIGGED. Dolphins broke several SB records in 1st half bit did not manage a 1st down in 2nd
Also same SB , week prior the US Congress held a floor vote which was 100% TO ENDORSE THE REDSKINS which in my mind was bs because HOW MANY SEATS DID FLORIDIAN REPS HOLD?
I can respect Marino as a person but wasn't exactly his biggest fan during his circus years with the dolphins. Hell, I even liked Jay Fedler better especially with his total devastation of Dallas at Dallas on Thanksgiving Day.

@@hdqb2813 I think I remember as a kid being sad Woodley got replaced by Marino after coming close to a SB win, but that didn't take too long to get over. That said, I've looked over some of your vids and for a QB who gets no praise, the Dolphins put up a lot of 45, 38 pt games with Woodley for being a Defensive renowned team. He was the right QB at the time for this team with a good receiving corp. Marino was thrilling to watch and still my favorite player of all time, but for all his talent, the team was too dependent on him, not a balanced Offense and too many turnovers, which makes his accomplishments even more impressive, but surely should have won a SB. Strock could have been a starter on a lot of teams too. I prefer these lowfi games over the modern HD games.

@@stevef4010strock... the only backup qb to ever hold out before a season. He was wanted by quite a few teams and especially the USFL at the time. He played his cards right and was paid quite well. To this day, still the best back up. Heck of a year he was having in 78. I think he had us in 1st with a 6-2 mark when Greise came back. His stats were better then Greise's that year, although Griese was a PB pick that season. He also played well when Marino got hurt in 83. Check out his first game starting. Think he must have completed at least 15 straight to start the game. Been a long time since I saw it. Think it was against Atl. Heck, I'll watch it now. We have UA-cam in 2024😂

Great video, David Woodley was my idol growing up in the early 80s in Miami and he was a spectacular quarterback! Great passer and rushes and had a great arm! I was devastated when I heard of his passing! As a Dolphins fan he gave me some of the fondest memories and I appreciate all of the hard work that he did! Rest in peace, David Woodley, you will never be forgotten.

He had talent and good athleticism. Could use his legs to gain extra yards and keep the sticks moving. But he was a project when drafted in the 8th round in 1980 and in a perfect situation would've benefitted from sitting, watching, learning and developing the good habits necessary to being a good NFL qb. Really wish he had gotten help for the depression/anxiety issues and not turned to the bottle.

The only LSU quarterback to play in a Superbowl until now (Joe Burrow). David Woodley from Shreveport, LA went to C.E. Byrd high school and was an all-state QB. After graduating high school in 1976 he went to LSU where he shared playing time with fellow QB Steve Ensminger. In his final game at LSU Woodley led the Tigers to a 34-10 victory over Wake Forest in the Tangerine Bowl

Yeah, Dan Marino was the reason for David Woodley’s downfall. After Marino came to Miami in 1983 and took over as their Quarterback, the Dolphins traded Woodley to Pittsburgh where he would spend 2 more years before the Steelers traded him to Green Bay for a Draft Pick in 1987. After getting cut by the Packers before the 1987 season started, Woodley just packed up his stuff and left.
After all that, Woodley went back home and drank himself to death from the depression he suffered not playing Football, which led to his death from Kidney and Liver Failure on May 4, 2003. Eleven years after getting A Kidney Transplant at the age of 33.
You see, Dan Marino coming to Miami in 1983 was basically a slow death for David Woodley. Especially when the Dolphins traded him after the season was over.

Go back and watch how well they actually did run the ball. You will be surprised! Marino audibalizing to many pass plays did not help the running game. Ask youself why that great O line that blocked so well for the running game a right before marino, could only pass block. A little knowledge here.... it's harder to run block.

David had all the talent in the world. If he came out today with all the instructioneers, videos, Qb coaches... and especially sports psychologist. Theres no way David isnt a high first round player today. You have to remember back in 1980, there was none of this and David was drafted with the CB position in mind, because of his great feet, speed and athleticism. He was never fully turned into an NFL QB, coming from a school that still played power running with 2 big backs, a Hb and the qb optioning. How strong was hus arm??? I recall some assclown trying to get Jimmy Cefalo to name drop Dan Marino in the middle 80's. The question posed to cefalo was.... What QB that you've played with had the strongest arm. Without thought, he said David Woodley, then explained how he hated to warm David up before a game because, of how much it hurt catching his fastball. An Alpha introvert is not the best combo to have as no one seems to get you and you seem not to get them at times. Anyone seeing him in HS today would have had him at a pshycolgists office. LSU would have then had a sports pshc and there would not have been a 2 qb system in front of him in college. Anyone who saw the 79 tangerine bowl saw how good this kid, the kid could be and that the other qb, the home town boy that he shared time with bit ass. Intraverts value their alone time to recharge, btw. L They can be very forceful leaders, better team mates, and people with the right touch. Also Davids rookie year of 1980, he was on the all -rookie first team. Rest in peace David as you couldnt in mortal form, wherever your spirt may be
