I really like your point about focusing on things that perhaps aren't things you'll commonly run in to, because like you said, the other stuff that you do run in to all the time, you'll automatically have alot of exposure and training opportunities with! One of the first things i did was crate train my dog. She's barely ever in her crate, but i knew she would be flying to spain with me at some point, and you never know if she has to overnight at the vet suddenly either. Gotta think ahead, for your own sake, but especially for your dog's sake aswell
I’m currently trying to train my 70yr old mothers newly acquired 3mo old Boston Terrier and I’m coming across the same issues you’re talking about with the Cocker Spaniel. He’s adorable and tiny so everyone wants to pick him up or “I don’t mind” when he jumps. Gregory is doing great. It’s the ppl that are having a hard time listening lol
This came perfectly! Stonnie been watching your stuff for a few years now. And now we finally just picked up our 14 week old black lab (British hunting line on both sides) Big plans for the boy! Keep doing what you doing sir
Great video! I loved the props! I especially enjoyed Bunsen’s segment. I’d totally be guilty of falling victim to his cute face too. 😆 Great points about being intentional and making sure he doesn’t always get his way or get made over and letting him learn to cope with challenges so he can become a well rounded dog.
This is a great video! You showed so many different situations, that the dogs may encounter and how to help them work through them. Hopefully the owners can “get it” and continue with the proper training. You are a great trainer, I love how you train. ❤🐾🐾
Thank you for watching. The frustrating thing about making these long form videos is that they get very few views. I really appreciate feedback from people who like the long form content.
I love your channel. I like your patience, understanding and common sense approach to training dogs. I’d love to know what kind/brand of treats you use for small dogs. Small dogs can be at times pickier about treats than bigger dogs I’ve had in the past. I’m 71, and disabled so am now limiting myself to small Senior dogs.
Hi Stonnie, you forgot about the people in a city who walk out their dog with "retractor leash" dogs pull on the leash like crazy, go right and left, cut people legs, dogs are totally lost with that leash and people push the button whenever they feel it. Love your video u put the words on what I think.. thank you
@@justinereid6374 I’m in Scotland. Good name for them! I HATE them. They’re invisible to a dog running at speed too and my puppy ran into one right at the level of her neck and totally shrieked. She was ok thankfully But the owner totally shouted at me. Argh.
I've used them in wildland areas to allow the dog to run out and back, side to side, but no one was around. Whenever we were around people, cars, whatever, I had it down to between 4 & 6 ft. They are OK when used correctly. Most people just don't.
Great video, love your content ! I totally agree with what you said around 32:00. Currently we got two shiba inus and with a lot of socialization, exposure to different environments, people, situations, etc, we can take them just about anywhere we want, e.g. climb into a boat smelling petrol, watch a loud parade in first line, hike in the mountains and decide on the spot visiting a deep cave with them, without getting the concern they won't follow us. Do you ever have primitive dogs in your place (shiba, akita, czech and sarloos wolf dog, etc) ?
For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕
Stoney Id love you to do a comparison of a Field / Working Cocker with a show cocker - it feels like they're chalk & cheese. I;ve a wonderful little working cocker very confident and fast thinking looks more like a pointer short haired and similar ears and maybe ranging distance. So different from show cocker spaniels like this little one. It feels like the field/ american lab vs english lab comparison is very similar. Im currently preparing him for some time with mentor dogs on some water adventures and road trip. We cooked dinner outside on the drive while he waited and didnt knock over the cook stove - well I had him back tied to make sure & get him into the swing of things. Need to get out there tonight and practice the sitting nicely beside me on my camping chair/ think Ill work on lying down next to the chair patiently - small steps - will be thinking ahead and working towards what I hope for and also the unexpected 😀😀😀
My 1 year old show cocker goes to doggy daycare at a working cocker breeder. She runs with the working dogs and does everything they do all weathers usually coming home wet and muddy. Our dog is super confident and outgoing. She has a strong play drive, not much of a prey drive, but isn’t as quick running as the working dogs. Showing dogs requires a very specific close obedience on the lead and a very high boredom tolerance (she’s done one show). They also need more grooming than working cockers, especially if you’re showing them. Our is hand stripped but cut quite short. Overall, I’d say there’s more difference between individual cockers personalities than there is generalising between the lines.
Love your video with the German Shepard 😊 I have Serena the German Shepard 97lbs. 4.5 years old. I believe Ukraine blood line. I do my best to understand her every day of my life. Management is key with her! I do love her so. The best compliment I get is she is beautiful 😊 Serena Beautiful ❤ Lots of management, respect, understanding and love. All of that is our beautiful relationship ❤Laurie
You're right about going down steps is harder than going up. Our 13wk gr just hopped out of the back of the wagon and landed on his head. We'll try again tomorrow with a bit more help from me.
Loving the cocker! Such good training!! I have 2 springers and a 4 month golden retriever and we’re teaching her to wait and not be fussed at the minute! Do you online teach in the uk?!
Hmm I guess I’m going to have to work on that crate training. My 6th month old lab hates the crate so I moved her into like a plastic play pen for kids. It’s actually a dog one. I had videoed her going completely nuts inside of it. (while we weren’t home ). She pooped on herself multiple times and claws the crap out of me when I let her out.she will eventually need to be spayed and never thought about her being in cage at vet waiting for recovery. I’m glad I saw this video. She also has an issue with jumping into my wrangler as she’s on short side. She can get into the trunk from the cut out in bumper for spare but has problems getting in back seat and try’s to jump on the fenders to get in. I just tired again yesterday and yet again she can’t do it.
for the crate it may help to tire her out mentally and physically before doing a crate session. sometimes giving cbd and calm sounds help. my dog hates his crate and used to throw tantrums inside of it until he saw the bigger the fit he threw the more i ignored him. it was only when he was tired from his episodes that i would i say ¨are you done yet?¨ and let him out. not every dog will be that dog who loves the crate so much they willingly go inside of it. a lot just learn how to tolerate it which is what the crate is mostly for. its not a permanent fixture just a device to put your dog in when they cant be supervised. how long is the dog confined? maybe it would help to have a sitter or walker come by to let her out. some dogs are fine as long as they know that someone will come to let them out when you cant.
@@angelinacamacho8575 Thank you!:) I appreciate that advice and will have to do that. She is a ball of energy and honestly doesn’t stop till she drops. Total bowl of sugar she is. The other problem is if she is that exhausted from exercise then she also will be hot. I do have a nice fan by her create so that should be good too.:) Now maybe that she is older she will understand why she needs to be there more. I tried two different 5min sections. She had toys and a few treats. The first time I sat in the room with her ignoring her. The second time I had a few things to do so I left the room and didn’t come back til the timer went off. She did better the second time. As I said thanks again!:)
My GSP was the best dog I’ve ever trained. Smart. Energetic. Eager to learn. Endlessly happy. A good run was his favorite treat. We had a huge fenced dog park hidden in county park so I’d take him there and let him run then meet up with friends for a round of disc golf with a happy and content good boy.
Is there a video you’ve done about field lab puppies walking well on the lead for people who don’t have an obstacle course like you? My lab is so fabulous but I’m struggling with her lunging when she spots south g she wants. It’s almost worse because she walks well to heel and then does it suddenly. I train with treats and used to sue clicker but haven’t managed in this area. Love the videos and all the amazing dogs in them. ❤
Hi Stoney, any advice on training a chubby lab puppy to walk on a leash when I am using a walker? Should be off it by late January but she is 14 weeks now and I am nervous about leaving this so late. She sits, downs, shakes and plays dead easily. She has a sweet and placid disposition but she does do puppy zoomies still. She has a companion pup who is three weeks older and a doberman. They get along really well.
Uncle Stonnie, I have a question about loading up. My dog typically jumps in and out of my SUV no problem. But I’ve heard it tough on dogs joints when the jump down from a vehicle, any truth to that? I’ve got a Pointer/Weimeraner mix.
As a puppy, my lab would not jump into the back seat of the car. She would stand, draped over the running board, and look over her shoulder at me. It was a process to be honest, teaching her to load, but I was not going to be lifting a 75 lb dog into my car every day. 😅
Ha, ha, ha, ha. From this day forward Stonnie will be known as that dog trainer who carries a doll while training. 😀 Who besides me would contribute to a doggy charity if Stonnie agrees to carry that shopping bag and doll carrier while shopping at Lowes and Walmart and the local biker bar and someone catching it on video?
Enjoy this video as I enjoy a lot of your videos. I don’t know if you’ve ever made a comment or made a video about this. But I am wondering what your opinion is of dog parks!. The trainer I have and I live in California absolutely hates them. I have a one year old German Shepherd who’s doing well. And absolutely loves Going to the dog park. Now that being said, I have not taken him very often, and there are only certain dog parks that I will go to. Because some of them, the owners are just not attentive to their dogs, and what’s going on. he’s never been in a park with more than maybe five dogs in it. And if dogs are there that don’t wanna play he’s very respectful and just leave them alone. Some people bring their small dog breeds in there and he doesn’t bother him. so after this long comment, I wonder what you’re feeling is about dog parks.
