    I've seen these exact comments every single week, on every single episode of Vinland Saga since Season 2 began airing. I figured it was time somebody addresses all of the negativity surrounding Vinland Saga's second season in a mature and understanding fashion. People are justified in their anger due to the abrupt change in pace, but they really still shouldn't be upset because this season pushes the story of Thorfinn forward in a the meaningful and emotionally significant way.
    I must be a terrible chef because I keep forgetting to put the sauce within the video itself.

      There are manga like that it's just that with the rise of neets in Japan getting into the industry and only buying merch and stuff for those shows and the reduction in good studios ever since the 2008 financial crisis Japan has pushed less and less good shows.

The 2nd season sucks because the first 10 episodes are basically playing a farming simulator while Thorfinn deals with his PTSD over and over for an unreasonably long amount of time. i think even in shows completely devoid of action, they manage to actually tell an interesting story. I've watched and read plenty of well written drama/slice of life shows and loved them, this is just boring to me.
      Very little actually happens this season, even the "character devlopment" that happened was almost entirely off screen in between seasons. I actually think that would have been interesting to watch, but instead we just get the end result. Theres very little substance to this season, other than the message. Conveying that through three 2.5 hour movies worth of chopping trees, farming, staring at eachother, and flashbacks just aint it.
      Even in S1 where there WAS violence there was plenty of character driven moments, calm moments, moments of just travelling even. Character development too. S1 followed the golden rule of "show, dont tell" whereas S2 immediately does a 180 and breaks that rule with constant exposition.

    Honestly the subtext in the first season may have been too subtle for some of the viewers. Although, in a way, vinland saga has accomplished its goal of immersing the viewer into the perspective of a child growing up around violence.
    The prologue makes us see the world like thorfinn would. A place of prey and predators, where the strong take whatever they crave and the weak submit or perish. Being a death-delivering machine, like thorkell, is cool, exhilerating, admirable and, most importantly, in line with the "rules" of the world we have come to know.
    As thorfinn has the proverbial rugg pulled out from underneath him, so do we experience the same lack of drive and exhileration that we have felt before. The animation and pace of the show now reflects overtly the actual themes of the show that had been subtext in the first season. In the same way thorfinn had subtly been reminded by thors of his real fight ("become a true warrior"), so were we reminded of the true nature and themes of this show throughout the first seasons excitement and action.
    Honestly i wouldn't have been interested in this show, if these hints hadn't been around in the first season. For my part, this story transition is expected and very welcome. Shows like this were exactly the reason why i became interested in anime in the first place.

    I mean, people can just use Google to see what kind of series Vinland Saga is and who the author is and they'd have a pretty good idea as to the kind of story they're getting into. A story does not HAVE to have action sequences (which have become sort of the new fanservice to a lot of viewers) for it to be good or meaningful. Also, Vinland Saga does have action but it's not all there is and the action sequences are used to communicate a greater thematic point. They're not just flashy eyecandy to keep people watching.
    The fact that people also say season 2 is just about farming as opposed to season 2 being about slavery (something the Vikings were known to engage in) is also telling. Thorfinn and Einar are SLAVES on a farm who are FORCED to work there because of the violence and wars perpetuated by the Vikings....the show in season 2 merely responsibly looks at the implications and consequences of all the violence from the point of view of those who are victims of violence, not from the perspective of those who engage in violence.
    One should also judge a show by what it's actually aiming to do and how it does it and not judge it based on one's own (in this case somewhat misplaced) expectations. You're not judging the show that's in your head, you're judging the quality of the show that's actually on-screen. The show being an exploration of the virtue of (and necessity for) non-violence, it'd be odd if the main character were just a hate-filled, uncaring edgelord.
    Bottom line: lots of people didn't actually seem to know what Vinland Saga was about or why people enjoy the manga and likely didn't know how to interpret what the first season showed them for 24 episodes and so now that it's become a bit clearer to them, a bunch of them are rejecting it...which is their loss tbh.

    • @norwa3518
      @norwa3518 Рік тому +8

      You're saying its not fair to have these wrong expectations and then call it a bad series.
      But I fully expected this season to be about what it is - A depressed, lost Thorfinn finding new values and beliefs and realizing violence isn't the way - and STILL found it boring.
      Two main reasons why I think its boring: Pacing and content.
      1. Pacing: Its not that its slow, its just that theres not enough content per episode to make it seem interesting. It would be fine if this was the only issue but...
      2. Content: The content in this season is pretty much the same every episode. "Violence bad, slavery bad, Thorfinn learn to accept your sins" It kinda just feels like the same thing every episode, on top of not having enough content per episode for it to feel engaging to the audience.
      I still give it a 7/10 because I like the ideas and I like the new Thorfinn much more than the old. So I'm not a hater either.

    • @Regenmacher175
      @Regenmacher175 Рік тому +21

      @@norwa3518 Well, I don't find any of it boring so far because the secondary characters get a lot of time to shine and I find the nuance and realism of the situations the characters find themselves in fresh and fascinating. Also, the season is not over yet so I wouldn't write it off just yet if I were you...I don't have an issue with the pacing either, as I never had the impression that the show was dragging its feet or that we didn't get enough content per episode. I usually find that people say the episodes are over too quickly, which generally means that time flies by fast and that in turn shows that people are actually engaged in the story that is being told.
      You get a good sense of the place and the people living there, which is important in order to care about them and that place as Canute plans to take it for himself...In terms of the content itself, I think my comment is self-explanatory: I enjoy historical fiction that manages to make its characters into real people, fleshes out its setting and treats its audience like adults whilst addressing themes like the virtue of non-violence within a violent setting. That, plus the excellent animation, voice acting, writing, soundtrack, directing, etc. make the show something truly special in my opinion.

    • @pagatryx5451
      @pagatryx5451 Рік тому +3

      Long one here... I love slower paced stuff, slice of life, etc. I definitely don't need violence or action. My favorite series of all time is LOTGH and that's 90% philosophizing and exposition. But Vinland Saga just...sucks to be honest. It being slower paced is fine if the story is still moving. But it isn't. The same conversations are had every episode. The same thoughts are portrayed every episode. It's just repetitive. It feels like a kids show pretending to be deep and philosophical.
      Take episode 15, the one that just aired. From the twelfth minute to the twenty second (or half of the entire episode), was spent repeating conversations that have already been had two or three times already THIS season. There was absolutely nothing new in that entire conversation except for maybe Thorfinn saying he's afraid of Arnheid learning he is a warrior, so entertaining... On top of that, it's discussed with so little subtly that it's...cartoonishly cringe? Like, could they really not blend questions about war, slavery, and violence in a more natural way into the story without having two people literally sitting in a barn saying "How can we eliminate war and slavery?". In comparison to LOTGH, the same ideas and questions are brought up but they only reoccur under a different context and in response to new events. Yang's views on governmental structures doesn't really change much, but the events that unfold have him repeat the same questions and answers under drastically different contexts that explores those questions and answers from every possible angle. The problem with Vinland Saga is the same questions are asked when nothing has changed. We are just being told the same thing over and over again and unless you're a bloody monkey, it's predictable. It also is as deep as a puddle. They never actually intelligently dissect war and violence. (and I get it, he's an uneducated viking, but then we don't need to have the constant musings.) They have about as much of an understanding into the reasons behind war and violence as someone doing a journalism degree.
      It's absolute drivel. Like, I understand what the entire point of colonizing Vinland is meant to be. I don't need a revelation about a land without war, and a scenic shot of a field of wheat, every two bloody episodes. I understand they're attempting to portray the fact Thorfinn is thinking about that promised land. But that works in a manga, not anime. Visual storytelling through slides does not, and should not, adapt into a full blown scene for each and every slide. You adapt the idea... The idea is that Thorfinn is thinking about Vinland. We DON'T need a thirty second panning of a field of wheat and him reading an essay EVERY time he thinks about Vinland. There are other ways to portray that to your audience.
      I can understand people wanting a return to action and war here because the slow paced stuff is just extremely basic and poorly written/adapted in comparison. You CAN write pacifist characters without them seeming childish and ignorant but that's exactly what Thorfinn feels like. Rather than have him immediately and suddenly convert to pacifism because 'killing bad'. It would be far more entertaining and realistic for him to have an arc where he was violent out of nihilism instead of ignorance. Killing because he didn't believe life has much value, but the loss of revenge, and his memory of his father and his values, leads him to avoid violence as much as possible, while being equally as 'hollow' and depressed due to his complete and utter nihilism. Far more believable and entertaining, would lead to a lot more interesting events, interactions, and especially conversations, and it would be something that we haven't seen a million times before. (Yes, I know Thorfinn was a real person. But this is still fiction.) He would still kill people if the situation arose, but could convert into more hardline pacifism after losing his nihilistic ways.
      Though the ten minute conversations would still have to include more than what was included in all the other ten minute conversation of this season.

Doing it in two minutes would not sacrifice any important information whilst making the moment more impactful due to it being more condensed.

      Season One: Jaw-dropping (read: expensive to produce) combat sequences. Excellent character development, including a whole ass character arc for Thorfinn from child to young adult. Many different settings (mountains, dark wintry forests, ocean, islands, historical locations, camps and cities, villages, etc), many different storylines and plots. Fast pacing, action packed. Thorfinn is a legendary fighter who is very exciting to watch.
      Season Two: Jaw-dropping (read: YAWN) farming sequences. Decent character development for Einar, but not for Thorfinn. When season 2 began, Thorfinn was already a changed man from S1. His growth between seasons is not shown. The only development in S2 is he goes from depressed to not so depressed anymore. Two different settings: Farm and Town. Three plots (Farming to earn freedom, Arnheid/Gardar who are minimal side characters, and defending the farm). Slow pacing, drawn out conversations, excessive flashbacks and exposition, long holds on characters staring at each other, long and slow pans on scenery. Thorfinn is a defeated pacifist who somehow, without the anime actually showing it, has internalized his father's teachings about enemies (despite being surrounded by enemies).
      Thorfinn uses violence against Snake to protect Gardar, a man we saw for like 5 minutes. But then he refuses to use violence to protect literally everyone else on the farm because "he has no enemies." KAY.
      SEVEN episodes were devoted primarily to the melodrama surrounding the two minimal side characters Arnheid and Gardar. Arnheid's entire character is "Einar likes me but Ketil fu**s me." Gardar's entire character is "Must rescue Arnheid *dies immediately*". Seven. Episodes.
      And: Season One had far more character progression and story than season two despite having FAR more combat sequences as well. How does that work? Well, they showed character progression through violence. It explored ethics, world views, and history through the lens of exciting combat. How does season two show it? Through introspection, dream sequences, and dialogue. It's a soap opera. Season one encapsulated the golden rule of "Show, Don't Tell," whereas season two violates that rule on a weekly basis.
      But sure, okay. Let's call this a masterpiece of storytelling. Let's brush the terrible pacing and character inconsistencies under the rug.

There are plenty of non action anime and television shows that keep me invested. But when you go from an insanely action packed first season where we probably saw a couple thousand people die to only seeing 100 people die in the last 4 episodes it is going to feel boring.
      Also I did not enjoy the new characters as much as the first season. I miss Thorfinn being a fearless little shit. I miss Ascalad. I miss the giant ogre dude. Ainer is good. Arnheid was fine and the old master was chill. But did not really care for Snake. And actually fast forwarded through some of the parts with Arnheid's Husband (Ragner I think his name was). They introduced him and then he died 4-6 episodes later. Which is fine, but they had like 4 flashback sequences with him in those 5 episodes to try and make us care about him, but I just did not. I felt like it was a side story that was put in simply to get Ainer and Thorfinn locked up.
      All in all I was a little disappointed in season 2. Season 1 felt similar to 100 year war arc from Berserk. Thorfinn being Guts (trusting nothing but their blades). And Ascalad's mercenary army being the band of the hawk. I did not hate Season 2. But as I just watched both seasons in a couple weeks, it felt like Season 2 came to a complete stop for way to many episodes.

I just think that the action was paramount to Vinland's mainstream success.
      I gotta hard disagree on Thorfinn being a likeable character before S2 though. He spent too long in his angsty teen phase. It does make his redemption sweeter, though, making him an overall good character. I said he wasn't likable. I didn't say he was a bad character.

    This series could be divided into 3 parts:
    - part 1 is the story of violence and revenge
    - part 2 is about regret and transformation
    - part 3 is the story of redemption
    Vinland Saga to me is among the best pieces of fiction ever created. The show is not about who is weak and who is strong, or who won and who lost. If you find it boring, maybe give it some time, come back and watch it after you're over the age of 23. I feel bad for people who cannot see its beauty.

    The story of season 2 is the culmination of what happened in season 1. It breaks down Thorfinns character and slowly pieces him back together as a stronger and kinder person. And we still haven't even gotten to the best part of Thorfinns character arc in the story at this point in the anime

      my main complaint is that it doesnt do any of that. all that "character development" is just him recovering from PTSD, he's already undergone that radical change in between season.
      It would have been so much more entertaining to see that petulant angry child become introspective and gradually change into the haunted man we see in the second season. Instead we get around 13 episodes of farming, cutting down trees, drawn out sequences of people staring at eachother, and flashbacks.
      Thats 3 feature length movies worth of basically nothing. People complain about the lack of action, but in my eyes thats because they see it as an easy fix to the season just being plain boring. Whats REALLY bothering them is the horrendous pacing. Ive watched plenty of slice of life/drama shows that technically "go nowhere" the entire time. they manage to do what this season failed to do though, and actually entertained in one way or another.

    I'd read the manga, and I didn't bother catching up watching all of S1 but I am following S2, so I'll talk about the way I felt when reading it
    I felt like the change was a bit abrupt. I totally understood that Thorfinn needed to change and what kind of charachetr he would turn out to be more or less, unless he'd end up saying fuck u to all his father's teachings that is, but since I'd heard about how good the series was I knew that what i just said wouldn't happen, or else the story would be ass and the praises wouldn't exist in the first place.
    That said, I really really liked the action in the manga, ik S1 animated the stuff greatly but It was already great to begin with, and i honestly kinda liked the ruthless broken fighter boy, although his charachetr was dull.
    So what I hoped for was for a more gradual change, accompanied by some action battling leading into a reverie of his, and instead we got the very slow farmland arc, and I appreciated it less than I should've, cause looking back at it it makes the most sense for Thorfinn's charachter development to happen after his will is broken through slavery rather than just dishing out some battle scenes and then him changing to a pacifist. And I'm happy that I've been keeping up with S2 cause it's making me love that arc much more

There has to be some danger, goal, sense of adventure, conflict of some sort or something that keeps the story interesting. • @comicbugx5789
    @comicbugx5789 Місяць тому

    It’s crazy seeing how many people that don’t see the nuance of what season 2 brings. Vinland Saga is a story about discovering what a true warrior is and the redemption of the son of Thors. What the story tells us is that a true warrior that is strong has no need for violence or a sword. What makes a true warrior strong is their lack of dependency of weapons to live meaningful life. Throughout the later story and season 2 there are many instances in which violence and blood are the easier option and would seem like the ideal choice. Thorfinn didn’t need to take the 100 punches but the fact he did made him strong. He won without the use of a weapons or violence even though he could’ve easily done so. From then on he uses his strength to build a new nation to help those who live in pain from the violence of war he use to participate in. The character development and the message throughout the series makes this story special. Even though it is an almost complete 180 it’s still compelling. For those reasons.
    But if you like action it’s fine. Ur just not a true warrior.

      Well then I guess season 1 would also be ass because Thorfinn's "development" (there's literally none) was completely sidelined by Canute and Askeladd's. All he did were side quests for Askeladd the entire season.

      @@couldbeanybody2508 I have seen way more negative comments then positive ones. You can pretend all you want that the show is loved by all but it clearly isn't. The show has flaws and is no longer the good story telling show with action it once was. The only people I see that still like the show read the manga and where aware the direction of the show was going to take. In season one everyone was aware of how violence was bad but it still gave character development and quick paced episode the current season is a snail pace in comparison.

    1:35 not only that. In Season 2, the animation in non-fight scenes is very VERY much worse than in Season 1. Yes there are less fight scenes. But even then when you compare the "chill" scenes in Season one with the chill scenes in Season 2... well... it's taken a huge HUGE dip

    I'm definitely not a fan of season 2's slow burn, but it was still an excellent story. The part in the finale when Thorfin sees his younger self almost made me tear up a bit. The way he looks on across the water as one who's found purpose and healed his inner child.

    S1 was about making violence look cool since you view the story from Thorfinn's pov whose life's purpose is revenge.
    S2 is about the consequences of said violence.

      @@poekpally Based off most the comments I've read? They don't get it. The whole message is about embracing non violence and using that to broaden your perspective and sense of empathy in a world to change people rather than alienate them, as that just continues the cycle of violence. Most the comments not liking it are from people who think this is a shonen even though it's never, ever fit into the shonen genre. (No power system, no protagonist rivalry, no evil organization, or op abilities that get stronger just because)By genre, this is a seinen where the whooooole point is the long term goals and struggles of the individual characters. Do people have to like it? Definitely not, but so many people complaining miss the point entirely. A show about not embracing violence....doesn't have violence!?!? Oh noooo!!!!
