- On my travels to the Northern region of the US, I stopped by to see my friend Ray (also known as Videoholic on UA-cam). He took me on a quick tour of his hometown, Cleveland, Ohio.
Traveling on I-90, we pass Lake Erie and the Cleveland Stadium. We see the future site of the Society Center (completed in 1992). Also, we visit the Soldiers & Sailors Monument in the Public Square. This 125' tall structure is Cleveland's memorial to the Civil War and was dedicated on July 4, 1894. We also see the BP Building, across the street.
Of main interest is the Terminal Tower, also in the Public Square. This 708' structure was completed in 1928 - two years before the train terminal itself. It would remain the world's tallest structure (outside of New York) until 1967. The view from the top is now very rare as the observation area has been closed to the public since the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001.
We finish the tour of the city by driving on a section of Interstate 90 known as "Dead Man's Curve".
Taped: August 27, 1989.
Looks so weird without the key tower
I love how this was filmed during the construction of the Key Tower
thanks for sharing...the world really was different place back in 1989.
George HW Bush was POTUS, soon after Pr Ronald Reagan
Man I was a teen aged that year now I'm 43 sheesh how time goe,s by.
i got to say your math on being a teen may be off. the youngest you can be is 46.
I realize this was shot 20 years ago... but Lake Erie wasn't then, nor is now the largest of the great lakes. It is the SHALLOWEST, but Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron are each larger than Lake Erie...
Great Video, that was before the tallest building was built the Key Tower, lso before Progressive Field, Quicken Loans Arena, and Cleveland Browns Stadium, and the Rock Hall of Fame
and the Great Lakes Science Center
It's always fascinating to see how cities looked decades ago...!
It was 30 years ago
Me and my sister was born in 1989 . we are from Cleveland Ohio
So we’re A newborn
So weird without the ballpark and the arena
Thanks , great video!!!
1:20 you can see them building Key Tower
It was originally named society center
cool video
Sure looks a lot different from today.
back when BP felt pretty good about themselves.
When the key tower is 57 stories
Filmed just two days after my first birthday (August 25). Chances are my birthday party was happening just 10 miles to the northeast (in Euclid) as this video was being taped. I was at the tender age of 1 years old.
Nice video of Cleveland before the new stadiums were built and before the Key Tower was built.
"largest of the 5 great lakes" that just isn't true
Aidan D no Google in 1989
someone else caught that. I'm not sure...but I feel like Erie is on the smaller end of the Great Lakes.
Technically Lake Erie is the smallest of the great lakes. In land size it's 4th. But in water volume in comes in last because Lake Ontario is the smallest of the lakes in area. But it's much deeper than Lake Erie.
Lake Erie is not the largest lake of the 5. It is Lake Superior.
shout out to the pigeon shit on the windsheild..
See the curve of the earth me either
the AT&T Bldg with no Progressive Field
I think a sad thing for me here (born in '57, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Cleveland) was hearing my parents' memories of a vibrant city they'd enjoyed growing up in. There was almost nothing left here any good by the '60s, there was martial law, riots, and later, bankruptcy. I took two spouses here and they were both quite horrified. This is a very interesting clip, however, thank you. Greetings from France from a Pennsy Dutch Slovenian Ohio born gal. sigh
2019 Here in Cleveland !
Hard to imagine cleveland without the key bank building. Was being built still when I was born. It used to be such a nice city, probably even nicer a couple more decades back. Such a shame and a pity.
The Q and Progressive field missing at 4:56 LOL
It Wasn’t Built Back In The Year Because Browns & Indians Had To Share The Same Stadium Called “Municipal Stadium” Til 93’ That’s When Indians Had Their Own Field In 94’ Called Jacobs Field (Progressive Field) Cavaliers Played In Richfield Not To Far From Akron In The Same Year As Indians Also Had Their Own Arena “Gund Arena (Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse)
@@VintageDonny216 umm I know I don't need a history on the city I've lived in since I was born (1979). My comment was a joke js.
@@CharlesEBright I knew you were joking 🤣 as well about the Q and Progressive field not being there lol 😆, but ive always wondered it was being built while i was in grade school and my family and I moved to Wisconsin in 1991 from the cleveland area, so im trying to remember what specifically used to be at the site of Progressive field and Q before they were built in the early 90s?
I was born a month later wow!
Nice view of Cleveland
obviously #cleveland has more attractions today compared to how it was in 89
Welp the terminal tower is the 2nd building now
The only two good things about Cleveland are the lake & downtwon.
the bp building was the sohio?
nope
How can lake erie be the "largest "of the great lakes what the hell was this guy smoking?
Stop Anti-Israeli Hate it is actually the smallest. LOL. With only 2% of the water of the Great Lakes. Also the shallowest, warmest, and has the most amount of fish! It is an excellent resource especially because of the rock salt.
That's what I thought, and I lived there for 12 years!
