  • I think concrete is a secret weapon for humanity. I was asked to make a video for the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair (OSSEF) in 2021 as a keynote speech. I talk about the things that drive me, some recent research from my lab, and how people can use their skills to solve Grand Challenges. I hope you have as much fun watching the video as I had making it!

    A huge thanks to Jessica Ley, my hero, for editing this video.

    I am a NYC Union High Rise Concrete Carpenter, Local 212. We are actually some what of a new union, only about 6-7 years old. We mainly build pretty much any form that is used to make concrete walls, Beams, or floors that go into concrete reinforced buildings. So we work side by side with most Iron workers. Steel and concrete are are like bread and butter together. Now im not one of these guys making major decisions on tension and weight and wind speeds but i do get trained in using all the different types of concrete building/forming system's. I will say you are an amazing teacher. I actually am going to request that my teacher use your videos in class instead of some of these other youtube videos that are very out dated. Even though i am basically at the grunt level of the concrete field, i do love science and engineering. i like building stuff, working with my hands and planning. so thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos.

    Ok, you mentioned that you want more suggestions for concrete subjects that you havent touched on yet. Hypertufa. Acrylic additives. Making concrete that is pliable to use like clay (for artists or otherwise). How long Bamboo, peat moss, coconut coir will last in concrete (indoors vs outdoors). What is the future for replacements of the USABLE sand? TY man, big fan.

    One of my favorite things about concrete is how waste products from other human processes can be implemented in an economic way to improve it's effectiveness. For instance, cementitious materials like slag, cement kiln dust, and fly ash are all by-products that can be used for concrete admixtures. Plastic fibers seems like another good way to repurpose waste products and put them into something that we use. Concrete!

    I work at a private storm water treatment company, and we put more concrete vaults in the ground than you can count. Concrete is pretty amazing. When the soil becomes too corrosive, we add about 20% flyash by weight to the mix to reduce expansion. It has negligible cost impact and will increase the lifespan of the concrete vault. It looks like these plastic fibers is something else for me to look into to help increase the vault lifespan. Great video!

    Mr Ley, I’m a layman concrete person. Followed and learned a lot from your videos.
    I find myself in unique situation of having recently bought some River bottom property out in Arizona. About 2-5% naturally occurring gypsum, might be a lil high.
    Anyways currently making a 4” slab w type s lime in a 20/80 mix w the River bottom sand.
    Have a kiln. Was wondering if you would be interested in sharing some of the findings for making a natural cement that’s green? Not looking for exposure, but to get the word out about concrete. Think you the man for that.
    Otherwise great vids and content. Much appreciated

    Hey Tyler! Good morning to you!
    I have fell in love with your content. The pace is perfect for long term retention on the material!
    I have a request. So I am actually creating a concrete staining business. The reason I have been watching your videos is because I really wanted to understand chemically what is going on with concrete when we pour it and how it reacts with the environment overtime and your videos have done a fantastic job! I feel much more intelligent on the topic.
    You probably thought you were running out of topics to talk about with concrete but I have a few questions that may be could take you down a rabbit hole of content.
    What I was wondering is if you could do some experiments and show videos of how the various different acid stains, acetone stains and penetrating dyes react with the concrete.
    Maybe discuss some of the health effects on the concrete itself. I’m not starting my business for another three months or so, would be great to be able to fully answer any question that comes my way so hopefully you’re not too busy!
    Thanks a bunch!

    Thanks for the passion and enthusiasm you put into this video and your work! I have a question for you. I am an undergraduate ecology researcher, and a question of increasing concern in my field is the negative downstream environmental effects of microplastics. Road wear from tires is a big driver of this problem, as material is sloughed off due to friction with the road when cars drive. Wouldn’t plastic-reinforced concrete exhibit the same problem, even if the plastic is used in small amounts? In my mind, it seems inevitable that regular wear and tear on concrete containing plastic would leak plastics into ecosystems.

    Dunno who to ask this sort of question, but this channel might be a decent starting point. Is there any way to accelerate the aging process of concrete for research purposes? As in, if I wanted to experiment with mixes, reinforcements, corrosion resistance, etc. do I have to wait 50 years before I can analyze failures, or is there some way to get an answer in a month to a year? Something beyond just using a press to test compressive & tensile strength.

    As concrete is one of the biggest polluters, I've heard something like 10% of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide, between hauling and even the curing process releases gas. Have you made a video about add mixtures using graphene to strengthen and in turn lessen the amount of concrete being used? I brought this up in a room with 3000 carpenters 2 years ago at a union meeting in Las Vegas, and nobody had a clue what I was talking about. Mr. Tyler a tutorial on concrete weight plates for weightlifting would be amazing if you did one.

    • @smokncho77
      @smokncho77 3 роки тому +1

      For like athletic weightlifting? Iron would probably be longer lasting for a purpose like that with plate weights. Concrete is hard, but brittle, so it is more likely to crack or chip if not handled correctly. Plate weights tend to see a fair amount of rough use over their serviceable lifetime. Iron is also a denser material, so to achieve the same weight from concrete would require a larger volume. There might be an argument for use if there were chains that were attached to concrete cannonball weights or something like that and I'm sure there could be a proper way to implement them in weight training, but honestly you could just use boulders at that point. In summary, concrete used for weight plates is not the best material for this purpose since iron is a denser, heavier material (better for weights) that is more ductile (less likely to crack) while concrete in this sense would not be playing to it's greatest advantages, like high compressive strength and heat resistance.

      @dimitris8575 3 роки тому +1

      @@smokncho77 I agree with you 100% but iron weights are extremely expensive right now because of the pandemic. Concrete will Chip or crack if handled roughly for sure.
