I am blessed historically, I live in the only northern town burned during the war (Chambersburg PA) and I can be to both Gettysburg and Antietam in about 40 minutes. 🇺🇸
@Christopher Hughes dont forget Florida had troops at Gettysburg, Perry's brigade (2nd, 5th and 8th FL). They were in heavy fighting on July 2 and 3, lost about 450 men out of 700.
I have a sister in law that has lived there for 50 years. My wife and I live in upstate ny on lake Ontario. We visited them at 2 times a year for years, but she's in her 80s now and plus health issues. We visited Gettysburg alot plus some Antietam over the years. My brother's and their wife's have come with us to Gettysburg several times and we always enjoy it. I always try to show to show them something extra and different there. Love Chambersburg, love their downtown
Before it was Park and privately owned, as a young kid with permission I metal detected the East Woods and dug a Breast Plate. I plan to donate it to the Antietam Park if they want it as I am getting old! I found it behind an L shape boulder array that would have provided cover for any Yankee from Southern fire.
@16:10...McLellan's job was to destroy Lee's army, not send him home. The South won by continuing to exist [like the Continentals in the revolution], the North had to take the war to them.
'Unvexed to' spoken by Lincoln upon the surrender of Vicksburg to General Grant, July 4 1863. He was referring to the opening of the Mississippi River all the way to New Orleans. The Father of Waters once again flows unvexed to the sea. ---A. Lincoln
I just finished reading Stephen Sears' book Landscape Turned Red: The Battle of Antietam. He does not mention McClellan personally crossing to the west side of the Antietam and firmly believes it was a mistake to telegraph his punch to Lee. I suppose Sears is one of the historians that Dennis Frye believes got it wrong, intentionally or not. So McClellan maneuvered his forces to Lee's left flank and cut off his route to the north. But McClellan still didn't fight; he allows Lee time to bring up the rest of his forces from Harpers Ferry.
Lee never had great success fighting McClellan. Look at this battle: Union - ~12,000 killed and wounded vs. ~9,000 killed and wounded Confederates. Look also at the Seven Days battles: Union - ~10,000 killed and wounded; Confederate - ~19,000 killed and wounded. Lee took a lot of Confederate casualties when he pushed the AofP off the peninsula. I intentionally omit prisoners, because most of them at this stage of the war were being paroled or exchanged later. I think McClellan probably would have won at Second Manassas. The problem was that Lincoln was impatient. Steven Stotelmyer, among other CW historians, believes that after Antietam Secretary of War Stanton intentionally withheld supplies from McClellan, so as to get McClellan replaced: "Too Useful to Sacrifice: Reconsidering George B. McClellan's Generalship ..."
nice to hear these historians tag-teaming this battle! This really adds to the flavor of this historic event!
John Morton from Edmonton Alberta Canada! I'm always interested in the history of the civil war! your videos help so much! Thank you!

That's awesome!

Joe Johnston to Lee after the Battle of Bentonville: "“Sherman's force cannot be hindered by the small force I have. I can do no more than annoy him.”
Love the enthusiasm!!!!
Awesome! Keep them coming please
Thank you for discussing the actions of 16 September. I just realized that I am acquainted with Brian, we met at NARA about five years ago.
Great presentation! McClellan has Lee's Dander up!

After the war Lee said his best Union opponent was McClellan per Shelby Foote
Ha! That was my first thought too. Foote doesn’t elaborate. Lee hated surrendering. That may have lowered his opinion of Grant.
I'm sure he LOVED fighting McLellan!!
Lee wanted to keep Union soldiers from getting to Nutter's Ice Cream store before he could. Just a guess.
The Mississippi River now flows unvexed to the sea. Lincoln statement after fall of Vicksburg and Port Hudson.

Unvexted: Grant's quote re: Mississippi River "Unvexted to the sea (after Vicksburg is conquered)" message to Abe Lincoln.
So are you all saying the tKIA's on the 16th are counted in on the KIA's on the 17th?
I apologize on misspelling your name Bryan ...
I don't like Little Mac either Dennis.... thx!
👋👍

Dennis is a little too hostile in his presentation. No need for the theatrics.
I think that's his natural disposition. Not hostile, but decisive and animated.
It is called enthusiasm and I find it entertaining….don’t ever change Dennis.
