We had a crazy hot summer here in Perth, like many of you are experiencing where you are.
For a few days, we enjoyed some tropical weather coming from the north. The rain was a welcome relief, but I also knew it could be a great opportunity to get out to the sand dunes near Cervantes in different conditions.
The weather didn't disappoint, I had a good amount of cloud cover to catch some colour and the damp sand created more contrast and therefore potentially more interest in the foreground.
The challenge was finding a decent composition in the chaos of sand dunes, plus not walking through scenes and leaving footprints. 🤦🏻♂️
I hope you enjoy this one!

And that last shot was my favourite. Absolute banger!
Thanks mate, I was pretty please with how that last one came out!
Absolutely stunning images that you make look far too easy. Great to see you back on the dunes. Those flies looked brutal, had a similar experience amongst the heather recently. Brilliant video mate.
This video made me want to get out there. It's been so long!
Cheers Alex, if you're keen for a quick trip up there, let me know, there's some much to photograph up there 😀
Beautiful scene and light, fabulous!
Thanks very much Melinda for your comment 😊
Definitely a battle in a large scene, on sand , fading light and carrying all those flies! Great images and edited perfectly. Look forward to the next one.
Thanks so much mate for your feedback. I hope you're doing well and getting out for a shoot! 👍
Lovely colours and shapes
Thanks David I was stoked with the colours that came out around sunset. I don't think I'll ever get bored of the shapes and textures that sand dunes provide.
Lol im only up to the flyswatting part so i liked it straight away. Looking forward to the rest now andrew!
Haha! Hey buddy, I perhaps would have normally editing this out but the shifting has begun 😬
@@Andrew_marr loving the pivot my man!!!
Beautiful images.
Thanks for that Brent! 👍
Persistence I presume is the skill you refer to, certainly demonstrated, especially with the added harassment of flies, then despite the challenges some lovely images the reward. It would be so tempting to give up too soon.
Persistence can help in so may ways can't it. Working out a composition, hanging in there regardless the conditions, spending time at a location to get you eye in and on occasions tolerating the local flies, thanks Michael 😄
What a lovely location (even with the sandflies) and really beautiful images Andrew. I really enjoyed your drone images too - they captured the patterns and textures in that landscape wonderfully.
Hey Valerie, This is a favourite little spot of mine that I probably don't get to nearly enough. The last time I was here I didn't grab enough drone footage or images I so made sure I spent some time getting the drone up and composing the sand dunes from a different perspective.
@@Andrew_marr I can see why it's a favourite of yours. I imagine the dunes there are always changing and you get different compositional choices every time. Just loved your images. Would be fantastic to visit it one day. Thanks again for sharing! 🙏
The flies north of Perth really are annoying as hell especially once you get past Geraldton. Nice pics despite the difficulties.
Sounds like you're familiar with the flies we get around here. Wait for the next video, when I get out the next morning and the flies step it up a level!
Hahaha - the flies!!! When we visited there, it was the same experience. Well worth the effort though - stunning images from the opportunity and timing with the weather.
Haha, yeah they certain made their presence felt. In the next video they knock it up a level but its just a fact of life in the country isn't it. I was pretty stoked with the conditions and I'm keen to get back there again soon.
@@Andrew_marr how many did you swallow! Hahahah. Looking forward to the next video. Love seeing the images you knock out. Such a great part of the world for it that’s for sure.
beautiful colours and compositions Andy that you have captured in this vast area, love the sunset in the West. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Ross, I was hoping for some clouds and interest in the sky and colours didn't disappoint. We're very lucky with our west coast sunsets, thanks again!
Yes, I agree with you Andrew - time in the desert dunes your eyes begin to catch the compositions much more easily. I notice it after waiting for summer temperatures to decline in the UAE that it takes me a trip or two to get that eye back in! Great video and great images (and colours).
Cheers Michael! I think those who recognise this skill, understand how compositions are discovered and improved. It can take some time (and effort) to tune you eye to what to look for. I love the simplistic, clear and minimalistic images you've captured of the desert sand dunes.
Beautiful image with the curve in the dune & that fabulous sky.
Thanks so much Laurel, I was so pleased with the conditions, I felt it added some great interest and drama to the scenes.
What a lovely variety of shots that really showed off the beauty in those dunes and the use of contrast. The clouds and sky were gorgeous as well so your research on the weather really paid off. Perseverance and putting up with the flies was worth it I would say!
Hi Juanita, thanks for your kind words. I was really pleased with the conditions I managed to get. I'll be keeping my eye out for the next opportunity! The flies were crazy, but were worse the following morning 😳
Greetings from Cape Town. Enjoyed the stunning images and the video. Lovely drone stills. The flies are something else! Thanks for sharing.
This is the first video I've seen from you and realy like you're style and images. I started my own landscape photography channel in the netherlands a couple of months ago. but I always like to see where other people are photographing and putting ideas in my bag. You've got a new subscriber looking forward to see the next video. Grt guido
Thanks Guido, thanks so much for checking out the channel mate, I'm glad you enjoy the videos and images. I'll be sure to check your channel out!
Great video again,,,love your drone footage,,excellent work...
Thanks Graham 👍 I was really keen to get the drone up over these sand dunes, and they didn't disappoint, cheers mate!
First time on your channel - lovely images ( and horrible flies !) - subscribed
Thanks and welcome aboard Ivor, if you love landscape images and flies, this is the place to be 🤣 I appreciate you subscribing mate!
Enjoy watching your videos shout out from Seychelles 🇸🇨🇸🇨🇸🇨🇸🇨
Thanks for that Clive, so glad you're enjoying the videos mate. I bet there's some amazing seascapes to discover around the Seychelles 🌴
👌
As always, loved the drone footage and stils as well as the captures with the GFX. For me, the cropped shot is a much better image than the original full frame. I didn’t notice any sound problem without the muff. Do we get to see the following morning’s shots on your next vlog?
Cheers Brian, I think these are my favourite images I've captured in the last few months, I agree the cropped was an improvement on the original. Yep, the next video will be the following morning's adventures, if you can believe it the flies get even worst...luckily I'm pretty used to it. 🤣 🪰
Here in the US we have White Sands ( gypsum crystals, not actually sand) National Park in New Mexico, very similar landscape and equally as frustrating to find good compositions. The light is spectacular for about 45 minutes in the morning and then it all goes flat until about sunset. The problem is what to do with the rest of the day? There's not much to do in Alamagordo NM..
Love your work as always Andrew. It looks like you filmed this episode a while ago. I forgot to ask you how the new Mavic 3 compares to the Mavic 2 pro ..??
Hey Richard, yeah this was from back in March, this was the first bit of cloud/rain we had in a while near us. The Mavic 3 has been a nice upgrade. Even though the sensor has the same amount of pixels, the footage and images seem to be sharper and have more detail. The flight time is also one of the big improvement which has nearly doubled over the Mavic 2. I don't feel I'm rushed when capturing video or scouting for photos.
@@Andrew_marr Yes I reckon the flight time alone would be a fantastic upgrade. Must catch up soon ..!!!
How about investing couple dollars in some bug spray. 👏
Haha, I have three different bug sprays in the car, but completely forgot to apply. However the worse thing is, I forgot to apply the next morning when I went back out and there were even more of them...luckily, I'm used to them. 😀
