Albert Camus is one of the greatest French writers and thinkers. He was a philosopher, an author and a journalist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 and his most famous works are The Stranger, The Plague, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Fall, and The Rebel. Camus is one of the most representative figures of the philosophy of the “absurd” or “absurdism,” which is a philosophical movement having as its central hypothesis that human beings exist in a purposeless, chaotic universe. Camus considered that absolute freedom must be balanced with absolute justice - too much freedom leads to the situation when the strong suppresses the weak but too much justice kills freedom, and we need to live and let live. As a promoter of the philosophy of the “absurd”, Camus believed that life has no meaning, that the universe simply exists and that it is indifferent to people’s lives. We are like Sisyphus from Greek mythology, forever carrying that heavy rock to the top of the hill, although we know the rock will always fall down and our life's work is meaningless. Our condition might be tragic, but Camus considered that this exact condition hides a blessing in disguise: life does not have a meaning, but we are free to attribute it any meaning we want. His philosophy has inspired a lot of people in dealing with the absurdity of life and even today, his philosophy is extremely relevant.

@@alexandros6433 Life cannot have objective meaning because it is not an object. You cannot apply meaning to 'life,' but you can apply meaning to the objects that you experience while living.
Michel Faucalt and Albert Camus are two of my favorites thinkers. Reading "the plague" has really helped me during the pandemic. This also raises questions of what is truly someone's "self interest" versus what could be considered true altruism. I just gave my copy that I picked up in the streets of NYC to my uncle for his birthday last year.
Postmodernism is a pseudo philosophy and the root of many errors that are a plague nowadays.

It’s worth noting that Albert Camus with less number/ less words too: still succeeded to elaborate to reply the most complex question of life : through existentialism and Absurdity of life : No writer before and after him is/ was able to explain this dichotomy with such ease and clarity…and here lies his greatness….!!

But it's worse, because the animal has no rationality to actualize whereas we'd be wating our potentiality. Logic shows the right path, that's not amatter of opinion. Also a morally objective life will show its fruits whereas saying that all is either absurd or subjective will prove wrong.

You don't have a meaning. Only what you create in your head. Stop thinking so highly of yourself that you have some sort of special meaning for the universe.
The universe has meaning for us both the other way around. Just a cog in a machine but we can choose a badass machine that rockets to space or a junk car in gmas garage. Our choice
But isn’t that the consequence of being a conscious being? Whether prescribed or self-assigned, most of us need a purpose to give direction to our experience, simply because it is OUR experience and no one else’s that we are stuck with, and want to feel like we did something worthwhile with all the time we were given.
Perhaps there are some who are okay just drifting from event to event with no purpose, but for others, embracing purposelessness just translates to everything you could ever do looking like a total waste of time. I am worthless, and no matter what kids I bring into this world, what achievements I earn, or what breathtaking memories I make, none of it matters, and I’m dumb for ever thinking it did. That’s not conducive to a healthy mental state or a very fulfilling life.

Despite being isolated existence and messey substances ,by dint of imagination , innovations and love ,we can overcome self pity and transformed ourselves from no-one to someone A. Camus philosophy make us aware us in noble way. It helps me lot to built my own construction of my thoughts.

For those who seek the meaning of life, life has meaning. For those who don't question what life is about, it doesn't matter. They just survive each day aimlessly. Still that's life for them. It's best we live our life in the way we perceive it.

The narration was a little old and could have been updated "a mother's love for a child" (a parent's love would have been more accurate) and only giving examples of traditional society "marriage", "jobs" ect. But still a very good video.

The most important aspect of Camus' philosophy is that he starts off with accepting the absurdity of life. We often ask, "what is the meaning of life" or "what should one live for" but that comes later.
The most important step is accepting what exactly we're dealing with and moving forward from there.

I truly love animals and found my meaning in animal rights advocacy. Animals are truly people too, just in a different form but exploited for so long that humans see them as products instead of sentient beings. Before this, I found life meaningless while I was working when the only meaning for work is for an early retirement.
I like learning the camus philosophy. I don't care for the speakers own interpretation via examples.

However, I don't see why it would be impossible to match faith and rationality/acceptance. Many thinkers have proposed what we could call "rational faith". When you keep questioning, searching for answers, considering science and keeping an always open mind. I like to bring this two paths together...

I wouldn't advice to read his books in english, for having read the stranger multiple times in french, after trying the english version, it looses a lot of its meaning and the books gets boring
Acceptance and faith in self is the same as the acceptance and faith in God surely. One has to choose the less lonely option in the end. If it is absurd to choose a faith in something else than self what happens to you when you fail at faith in self. Some have an education and drive to excel by happen stance, but what of those that get neither help or aren’t driven to resolve. We some how think that being immoral (eg killing animals for food) will somehow miraculously help our conscience if we love some animals more and kill others. Why not humans? Some believe that all food is equal and nutritious and therefore it’s only a matter of filling our belly. However I know for a fact that we are what we eat. Eat little nutrition and you will be ill eat lots of calories and fat and you will be fat. Transference is what makes us who we are. We become what we eat and we become who we surround ourselves with. Protectionism is our goal and balance needs to be intentional and ongoing not an after thought and a knee jerk reactionism to get our life ‘right’.

I feel you are getting a little confused between Existentialism and Absurdism. "Thus life becomes absurd" Life is absurd for everyone. It doesn't become absurd due to our circumstances. Life is meaningless; nothing we do can give it meaning, but we should live anyway. Living is rebellion. Accep the absurd. That's it.
