That band went through so many metamorphoses before hitting it big. The original lead singer, John Spence, committed suicide. Gwen’s brother quit. She was there from the start but the band didn’t hit it big until she took over not only lead vocals but writing most of the lyrics.
The way she sings to him, you can see the hurt in every movement she does.
You can see the frustration of every one in the band, too, not just her.
I like how they’re playing in a garage- she always says they started out as just a garage band. This song is about her breakup with the bass player I believe. Once her brother Eric phased out of writing lyrics, Gwen too over and wrote almost all of the lyrics for Tragic Kingdom and the band found their footing and took off! So good! Love Gwen and No Doubt!

Gwen is such a fucking boss. I saw them when they did their reunion around 2009. They did bamboozle which was an outdoor festival in NJ super similar to warped tour but only a weekend. I've seen videos of them playing but gwen climbed that stage to the top during I'm just a girl. Honestly, they are all awesome but I wasn't expecting her to still put all that energy and passion into performing every show.
My heart was feeling her pain. How she sang with this song with her breakup with Tony, feel her emotions standing next to him
UNDENEATH IT ALL is another great and unexpected song of theirs.
No Doubt has alot of influences like Indie, Alternative, Electronic, Pop, Christian, and Ska which is a genre of music that combines Jamaican and Caribbean rhythms, punk rock energy, and horn sections. Together, these elements create an energetic, highly danceable style of music that has achieved off-and-on mainstream popularity.

LOL in this case you are correct - it does have a Spanish (from Spain) Flamenco vibe to it. - No Doubt started as a Punk/SKA band in the OC.

I think you might be hearing the classical guitar. That's what they use for a lot of flamenco music. They also have a big Ska influence.

Saw them in the 90s for their Tragic Kingdom tour. Amazing concert. They date back to 1986 actually, No Doubt was Gwen's and her brother Eric's band. Check out their Beacon Street Collection album from the early 90s. 😊

The band was barely speaking during the shooting of this video. Everyone was angry with Gwen. If you look, most of them won't even look her in the eye. If I remember correctly, this video kind of represented what was really going on. She was getting all of the attention and the band was just some guys playing instruments for her. They were hanging by a thread and decided to shoot the video but acknowledged that they were probably done after. Thankfully the song was absolutely massive and it's probably one of the best music videos. You can feel the raw emotion. Watch the end when she is singing in the faces of the bandmates and they either turn away or won't meet her eyes. The song had to bring up so much emotion when shooting the video.
Although you're fundamently correct about the theme of the song and the bands stance, you're reading too much into the video. The video is directed that way,and they are not unaware of the camera like it's a documentary.
@@normandavidtidiman9918 That is a fair point. I think it's more that what was going on behind the scenes is reflected truthfully in the music video. There was quite a bit of tension in the group and a good chunk of it stemmed from Gwen being pushed to the front of the band's success, while the rest were kind of shunted off to the side.
When the cameras were not rolling they wouldn't even meet her eye or talk to her and vice versa. The video really highlights the struggles that they were going through and despite it being directed that way, you can still feel anger and pain.
Add in her split from Tony too. Again, this may have been directed that way but at the same time there are some moments in the video that feel a little too real. Like touching a nerve.
Always liked No Doubt back in the day. Some funny memories for me with the song ex girlfriend lol. Was never keen on Gwen’s solo work
My opinion the best track by No Doubt was 'What You Waitin' For' and the video is funny as hell. Check it out if you can.

This song and performance in my opinion was the showing of what happened and how the media focused on her and not the other members of the band. They broke up after this and she went on to become a wife and mother and a few years later she joined the cast of the Voice, met Blake Sheldon, fell in love and recently got married to him. But listen to this whole Tragic Kingdom album a lot of great songs that she wrote in this time. Her music is considered Ska
