If you're not too rich then Spain is a good place. I have been able to live here on $1000 a month and own my home with no mortgage. Wonderful weather, mountains, beaches and food. Considering the Balkans now( Serbia, Montenegro,Slovenia, Bulgaria).
Also still looking into Colombia and Ecuador still. An American expat has a channel that raves about Paraguay but I don’t know a lot about it.

Cumbaya to the East (still technically part of Quito) seemed nice though and I would only consider that area, it's also 2000 feet lower then the Western part of Quito. Colombia is a lot nicer but still Spanish will make things a lot better.

We lived in Chile for 18 months. For the most part, I agree with your assessment. One thing that we found to be particularly bad in Chile was the food...boring with a capital "B." We had two excellent meals during the time that we were there and many that were disappointing.

@Joe Barone You're right. When I moved to Nebraska, I was taken to the best Mexican restaurant ever. The food was a little bit south of a TV dinner. I'll just leave with a small factoid about Chile. The national dish is the Completo. It's a hot dog with mayonnaise, avocado, and tomatoes.

you sound like you didn't go south. Most of Chile has only 5 options of meals, which is sold everywhere north of Puerto Varas. I also hated how they put pounds of sugar in literally everything. During the initial lockdown, those who had this visa weren't allowed in which I found quite surprising, because what does second home mean of you're locked out of it during a time when it's most needed? Your content is great though , as usual.

  • @anamericaninbangkok
    @anamericaninbangkok 2 роки тому +2

@anamericaninbangkok Thailand is what I call a "value destination" for both tourists, expats and potential expats. Quite simply, if you have the funds, there are better, cleaner, less corrupt and more developed places to live with a greater political stability. Also, China has a huge amount of influence here (like it does in my countries). This is coming from someone who has lived in the country for nearly 30 years.
I love the place, however if I were an ultra high net worth individual, I would only live here part-time (at most) and would live elsewhere for the remainder of the time.
Thailand isn't what it used to be, my priorities have changed, the country has become oversaturated as a tourist destination and now there are more and more Chinese moving and visiting as well as Indians and Russians. The vibe is much different than when I first moved here and as a family man, the reason we stay here is because of the value (which is slowly diminishing), our kids are still in school, the friendly people and also it's fairly safe.
We are considering other places to live in the next few years.

There are MUCH better and safer places within the same country. There's no need for a local Chilean as your companion down south, however, it may be your best bet in the central section of the country, esp. if you're of African descent (Black). My ex-wife, fiancée at the time is a white Chilean. I also lived in central Chile, and will go to the grave speaking wonders of Puerto Montt/Puerto Varas/Ancud region

As an Estonian, I can say that yeah, the country is very overrated in that regard. I do wish that the tax was a bit lower but a bigger issue is that housing prices are going up way too much, at least in the capital where I live. It's good if you invested a long time ago or if you wanna own land in the countryside, but for anyone younger, that's considering moving here, I'd suggest going somewhere else. You'd get more bang for your buck in other places. Healthcare is pretty good, fast, and cheap, but that's the same in most of the EU.

I've stayed in Thailand several times since the early 2000s. It was never a good place to park your wealth, other than cheap prices and favorable exchange rate, which are both long since no longer true. A lot of comments below say Thailand is favoring Chinese this and that--that may be true of the government at this moment in time, but its certainly not true of the people. You'll find that Malaysia has much better infrastructure in almost every way, plus I'm impressed by Kuala Lumpur's tech scene, they have a decent amount of tech talent going on.

Anyone under 50 contemplating Thailand as a long-term (more than 3 months) destination really needs to factor in the impact of a visa crackdown on their plans. Back in 2014 there were people who had clearly been using back-to-back tourist visas to stay in the country - a couple of days in Penang and voila - but suddenly found themselves forced to get on another plane with their freshly stamped visa and go elsewhere. Never assume that Thai immigration will be happy to see you, regardless of how much you spend in Thailand - particularly odd when the Chinese and Korean tour groups are so incredibly tight fisted, but the hotel industry clearly loves them

I was surprised with how much I liked Pattaya. Getting around is a lot easier and very cheap. Yes Pattaya has it' seedy areas but it's trying to become a family destination place, so it has the best of both worlds. Next time I'm there I'll stay by Terminal 21 in the Northern part (the South is the party area) I am not a fan of Phuket or Chiang Mai. Phuket, mafia presence, transportation... Chiang Mai's burning season is when it would have some if it's best weather. I like Bangkok but the traffic/ getting around is brutal.

Chiang Mai used to be great. Friendly and reasonably priced surrounded by beautiful countryside. In the last few years mass tourism has flooded into the old city eroding it's charm. The best time to visit there IMO would be now before the tourist hordes return and the burning season begins.

One thing that would make me pick Thailand over Malaysia is the food. It's very personal so everyone will have different opinion about it and it's OK. Sun and beaches can be found in many places but the overall attitude toward food in Thailand does it for me.

Me too. The variety of foods is amazing. And there's food everywhere. Or, there used to be, before the pandemic. But since Thais are obsessed with food, I expect it to return. Less so in Malaysia. Besides, a lot of Malaysian food comes from Thailand, produce in particular. Most Malays refuse to work in agriculture. They get special treatment from their government, so they don't have to.

I think Thailand is good for those with an average pension. Fairly inexpensive and visa is doable if you qualify. If on a limited budget or too young to qualify for visa IMO not the best. On the other hand if looking for a bit more sophisticated lifestyle or looking for a place to do business IMO Thailand isn't the best either. But for a guy with say 2k usd a month pension who can park 25k in a Thai bank for a visa he could live very comfortably. Are Thais the most foreigner friendly or outgoing people, that's a different issue.
