Fantastic review. I actually was able to demo the Hightower, Tallboy, and this one over the weekend . Going into it, I was convinced the Hightower would be the bike best suited for me. In fact, the 5010 wasn't even on my radar and only reluctantly rode it while waiting for a Heckler in my size to return for me to take out on a spin. Wow, am I glad I did. This bike surprised me in so many ways. Like you mentioned, it was the best cornering bike I've ever ridden. Unbelievable! It was so much fun! Needless to say, of all the new SC bikes, this is now the one I'm really thinking about buying. It is really so good. Great review as always. Thanks for sharing it with us! 16:29
Nice review, I have the 2022 5010 and it is hands down the best bike I have owned, and I would say it sounds like the mx version even though mine is straight 27.5 wheel. This thing corners, wheelies, jumps, and jibs like nothing else. Just dropped Tsunami to Fireswamp on it today and never felt underbiked.

I've always been a XC rider and have been riding my 15 year old Superlight. Then this year I decided to to shop for a trail bike because my buddies have been busting my balls for being a snail going downhill. The trails I ride and pretty chunky so I wanted to get the 5010 this year at my favorite LBS, but they don't have my size. I don't wait to wait 6 months or more to get the bike. However, the shop has plenty of medium size Bronson, but the Bronson is too much bike for my trail. They also carry Blur trail, but I don't want another XC bike. But there's this one 2022 Pivot 429 Trail caught my eyes like a puppy in the animal shelter trying to get your attention. Bought the bike and took it out to my local trail and amazed how I didn't have to work hard going down a chunky trail. Unlike my XC 26 inch wheel, I have to pick the line going down and get left behind by my buddies. DW link suspension is awesome.

I also wondered why you didn’t compare it to the bronson. I’ve got a Bronson and everything you said about the 5010 is how I feel about the Bronson. It’s super well balanced. Corners better than any bike I’ve owned and is a perfect blend of stability and pop. I’m curious to try the 5010- but I think I’d still want the extra bit that the bronson offers sometimes. I do wish the bronson had the glovebox.
Glad you liked it! It’s tough comparing old SC with the new stuff. The suspension has changed so much. The new 5010 is more plush yet somehow more poppy than the TB.
Question for you guys - I currently ride a SC Blur (100mm travel), which is great for my local trails and the occasional rides in western NC, but can quickly get to be too much for the XC travel. Looking for a second bike that’s more confidence building on the rougher trails and one to travel with when riding unknown trails. Was considering between Tallboy and Hightower, but the Tallboy seems too close in geometry and ride to the Blur. Not looking for DH / enduro style trails. Since Santa Cruz are doing their summer sale and this is the best review of the 5010. I wanted to ask between the tallboy, 5010 and Hightower. Which would you for they would all run a lyrik setup and enduro setup? Cheers
I haven’t ridden the new Tallboy yet but I have ridden the Hightower and 5010. Of its any help to you there’s a 5010 hanging in my garage that sees more miles than any of my other bikes.
Great review! I loved my V2 5010, changed to an Evil V3 following about a year ago. Would love to hear how it compares to that. Still can't find a 5010 demo bike up here in the northeast.

Nice vid. Really enjoy your reviews. Currently I ride a Spur and I am thinking of upgrading the Sid ultimate to a 130 Pike ultimate. Already changed the sidluxe in the back to a deluxe ultimate and it made the bike way more capable. I also have a Rallon from 2021 in XL being 5'10 riding it as mullet. But I am not happy with it, so I will take it apart and rebuild my ripmo af with a cascade components link. The ripmo is more fun to me. After seeing your review I want a 5010 but I am not sure if it's too close to the ripmo and /or the Spur. As you are familiar with both of those bikes what would you say? Thank you in advance and cheers!
I think there's a significant amount of overlap between this and a Ripmo. This is more fun and playful than a Ripmo but I don't think it's really any/much less capable. The Spur is a very different bike. It's way more XC. Far less capable, but quite a bit more efficient.
Have you ridden the carbon mullet Patrol? I'd be really interested in a review of that, or even a mullet bike showdown! How does the 5010 or the Bronson compare to the patrol in cornering?
Your reviews are second to none. I have a 2021 5010 X01. In your opinion, is the new 5010 X01 hands down a better overall trail bike? Just wondering if it is worth the upgrade for the longer wheelbase, 29er front and suspension improvements. I definitely notice my 5010 is a bit squirrely at speed and would love some more stability. Now if I can just find the money to upgrade. :) Thanks you.
@@bikersedge Hi again. I am 5'8" and have a 5010 V4. Do you have any thoughts on the new 5010 vs. new Hightower for better overall trail bike? I ride a mix of xc/trail and blue/black descents. I am not that fast and generally don't send stuff. Average 49 year-old rider. Just saw your Hightower review, which was great. Thanks again.
Hey so I’m deciding between a Hightower and a last gen 5010 (before mullet) being from Minnesota there’s not alot of huge narly trails but every once in a while I’ll go do service lift. Curious what you’d think would best fit for me. Thanks!
I’d rather they work out size specific stays on the SB140 and frame storage before looking at mixed wheels. I don’t think it will happen though…it’s basically the same bike as sb130 in every way. The 5010 is a smaller bike than anything in their lineup.
hi, i have a meta sx, but i feel the bike heavy, i love the downs, the long trails, drops, ramps etc, but the meta sx is fast for down, bur its long and heavy por jumps, do you recommend me the 5010? i want some more playful, and i want that be able to ride anytrail
It tough to compare a single bike vs an entire suspension platform. Even with the same suspension design, each bike is going to feel different based on geometry and travel numbers.
What did you think about the 27.5 out back in chunky sections? I tried mullet setup on a trail bike recently and the small wheel felt like it fell into the holes more, slower in chunk, choppy in rough sections. Felt so much slower than full 29. Wondering if it’s different when a bike is actually designed for mullet.
Do you feel like they departed a bit from that bmx nature in favour of more all around trail? This just makes me more curious about the upcoming tallboy
Possibly a little. Although I don’t think this one is less playful than the old one. Also I feel like a lot of folks think they ride MTB like a BMX but in reality they’d actually be better suited on a bike like this.
Another review said the new 5010 wasn't plush at all in rough sections and the rear rode kinda chattery. Did you find this to be true? Im so close to pulling the trigger on one at your shop. I currently have the switchblade and am pretty happy. I can mullet it but i sat on a 5010 at your shop and felt it was pretty amazing. Only worried about a rough rear shock.
It’s tough to really describe any 130mm bike as plush. There’s just not enough to work with to be plush. If that’s what you’re after, go for a big bike. If what you want is a quick, lively cornering demon that’s capable enough to ride some rugged terrain on, then snag the 5010.
@@bikersedge So torn between the 5010 and Hightower. Years ago I opted for the V2 Bronson over the 5010 because of how it felt on the descents. Is the new Hightower “much” better than the new 5010 on the downs?
I own a ‘22 Stumpy Pro and can’t wait to ride the 5010 Mx. I may be selling the Specialized!! However, the Stumpjumper is a quick, nimble bike… especially with the mullet link and small back wheel.
One comment on the Santa Cruz 5010 or maybe for all mixed wheels. Looking at the new and looking online, mixed wheels are not I mean not readily available. So, for all of you trying to built the framset or even upgrade the wheels let say to nice enve with Chris king hubs, you will need to buy two sets (29 set and 27,5 set), bummer
Not even close to being true. Just bought myself a set of Reserve wheels in an MX configuration. I know Enve also sells MX wheelsets. You certainly dont have to buy two wheelsets.
I’m torn between getting a 2022 5010 or a 2023 5010 mullet. I was originally going for a 27.5 as I am 5’9” and have a smaller frame. I like the more “bmx” style riding as that’s what I rode growing up. 29ers just feel too big for me. Would I be losing much, like the nimble/playful feel of the 27.5 if I go with the Mx? Any help deciding is much appreciated.
Hey I’m 5’9” also and currently own a ‘20 5010. It’s my go-to bike and you can’t beat that SC magic feel. I now have a Mx on the way, size Med, and can’t wait. For reals, this guy was meant to review bikes. SC should get him on the payroll!!
@@An0n_Ym0us_79 that’s awesome and you should really like the new suspension too. I got in the first ride yesterday and very happy with it, minus the Enduro tires that I swapped out, but haven’t ridden yet. Mine did come with a 20 mm rise bars, not the 35 rise bar and I don’t know how to feel about that? Still, gotta love SC quality… it’s SICK!!
@@robscott8014 I haven’t picked mine up yet but did get to test ride it. Now that you mention it, the bars seemed relatively flat. I may have received the same, do you think?
It’s tough to compare new SC to the older stuff right now. The suspension has changed so much with these newer versions. I think the new 5010 is plusher yet somehow more poppy than the old TB or 5010.
I’ve ridden all my favorite trail on this bike. It doesn’t offer the confidence as a bigger bike on some of the rougher trails but it can handle most things you throw at it.
Enjoy your reviews! You really liked the Norco Optic in that review. Any similarities between the new 5010 and the Optic? I'd guess they are in the same class being on the aggressive side of trail bikes. Thanks.
@@bikersedge no this combo is not in the same ballpark as bronson ,it's only 10mm different and 34 s are a little undergunned for aggressive riding if you ask me a 150, 36 keeps this bikes intended use with a little more muscle
Just thinking that if you want to get aggressive with the riding, a Bronson might be better suited. Even with more fork up front, you're going to run into the rear struggling to hang. To each their own I guess.
Hey Im looking to switch for a transition spire to something more trail oriented since I have a long travel e bike that I now do most of my techy dh stuff on. I haven't had much time on an mx bike. I am 6' 1" tall and have owned older hightowers and I have demoed the spur I have also owned the last version of the tallboy. I want something that I can take to moab, that I can pedal my weekly workout lap on and that is still fast and can handle aggressive riding like whole enchilada and captain ahab and spinal tap, but that doesnt weigh 33-34 lbs like my spire does. I felt like the tallboy needed a little more travel when I owned it before and felt like it was underbiked for the way I ride ahab and spinal tap and whole enchilada but loved how fast it was on local trails. Am I going to hate having an Mx setup?? Would I be better to just go hightower? Thanks in advance
Don’t know if the 5010 is going to be the fast climbing bike you want. It’s not quite like the Spur. That said I’d be more than happy to ride my 5010 on Ahab, Grafton and any other difficult desert trail. It’s plenty capable on the descents and I think it offers a fun factor that the Hightower doesn’t.
@@bikersedge ahhh. Ok. Thank you so much. I rode a trek fuel ex-E today. I think the 9.7 will be my next bike. I haven’t had a mountain bike in over 10 years. Can’t wait to get back out there. I’m on a gravel bike now but living in the PNW I need a little bit more trail power
It rounds out the bike better giving it a wider appeal and a more versatile ride quality - Santa Cruz is trying to sell bikes and they're probably not selling too many bikes to folks who are doing 360s and backflips on the regular. Not too many drawbacks to the big front wheel. Still corners on rails, jumps really well.
This 5010 is extremely heavy for the price. I have the 5010 v1 and despite the fact is a different bike I think +2 kgs is too much difference, and mine hasn´t top components.
More expensive doesn’t always mean lighter. Sure you can buy lighter parts that are more expensive but you can also buy heavier parts that are more expensive. Lightweight doesn’t always equal better.
@@bikersedge you are correct, but here we are comparing apples to apples, my 5010 CC y a lightweight trail bike, you can do long distances and have fun in the downhills, that is the reason I payed a lot of money for it, but the new one is two kgs heavier, that is crazy. I have friends with heavier bikes struggling to survive in long adventures. Of course weight is not the most important factor but is relevant, that is why every model of all brand have levels of components and the lighter the more expensive it is. I think that a trail bike like this has to deal with the balance between weight and downhill capacities and this 5010 is not getting that balance at all, you have a trail bike with the weight of a enduro, just my opinion.

Having rode the spur and owning a 5010, they are not very similar.
Great honest review as always 👍. Any plans to review it big brother the V6 nomad
Hey thanks! Man I’d love to get my hands on one of those.
@@bikersedge butter up that local rep and snag a demo for a fee days
Do you think this climbs better than the Ripmo? Thanks, love the channel!
In terms of efficiency probably not. In terms of technical climbing I’d say this is better.
hey love the reviews you do, any chance you could ride the Nomad.......and Bronson to give a MX round table comparison
Those are the two I haven’t been able to get my hands on. Trying though.
these videos are so good, thanks!
Hey thanks! Glad you like them.
I wonder if I’d feel a difference between this and my 2022 tallboy. Run my tb as 140/120 but I bet the rear end is a bit more plush in the 5010.
You’d feel a difference for sure. The suspension on the new SC stuff is pretty remarkable.
Also running this set up and wondered how it’d compare. I’m pretty enticed. (Between that and Bronson)
Have you ridden the carbon mullet Patrol? I'd be really interested in a review of that, or even a mullet bike showdown! How does the 5010 or the Bronson compare to the patrol in cornering?
Unfortunately I haven’t ridden the new patrol or the Bronson. Wouldn’t be able to say either way.
Another great review! 👊Are you going to do a review on the Nomad 6? 😁
If I can get my hands on one I will
Your reviews are second to none.
Snot just trying to make you want a new bike here but yes, it’s a better bike.
Such a great review video. Thank you! What build was this tested 5010 ?
Hey thanks! This was the tip top X01 AXS RSV build. Pretty nice.
Hey so I’m deciding between a Hightower and a last gen 5010 (before mullet) being from Minnesota there’s not alot of huge narly trails but every once in a while I’ll go do service lift. Curious what you’d think would best fit for me. Thanks!
As I’m watching the end of the video I think I found my answer 😂😂
@@mackfeldten1520 I would think the 5010 would be a good fit.
2:24 Have you tried 26" wheels?. That's fun.
I expect the new Yeti SB140 and Ibis Mojo to be mullets.
Wont be a 140
I’d rather they work out size specific stays on the SB140 and frame storage before looking at mixed wheels. I don’t think it will happen though…it’s basically the same bike as sb130 in every way. The 5010 is a smaller bike than anything in their lineup.
I like the older 5010 better. The one with the rear shock attached to the top tube.
Do you have any plans to review the nomad 6? Really like the channel. Thanks
If I can get my hands on one I will for sure. Thanks for the kind words.
Great review 🤩 How do you think it compares to the Yeti SB140?
Haven’t ridden that bike so I can’t say.
Now I wonder how the bronson gonna be like. I know more travel but will it tame the cornering?
Not sure. Haven’t ridden that one yet. I’d like to for sure.
Love your videos, I would love to see you review the YT Izzo
Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately with YT. being D2C we wont be able to get our hands on one to make it happen.
hi, i have a meta sx, but i feel the bike heavy, i love the downs, the long trails, drops, ramps etc, but the meta sx is fast for down, bur its long and heavy por jumps, do you recommend me the 5010? i want some more playful, and i want that be able to ride anytrail
In the right hands this is plenty capable enough to ride any trail.
Great review as usual!
How does this bike compared to Revel CBF?
It tough to compare a single bike vs an entire suspension platform. Even with the same suspension design, each bike is going to feel different based on geometry and travel numbers.
@@bikersedge how about against Revel Ranger on climbs?
Ranger is way more XC than the 5010. It’s faster uphill for sure but the 5010 is smoother and offers more traction.
Definitely slower than full 29 in a straight line. Average speeds might be higher though because this corners faster.
How would this contrast to something like the Specialized Status 140? Both are "playful mullets"...
Haven’t ridden that one. Couldn’t say.
Thanks! So torn on this and Ripley. I know two totally different bikes. Being 2nd bike to my SB almost say Ripley but 5010 looks so fun. Thanks
The Ripley is more trail/XC while this is more trail/all mountain.
I would like to know how this compares to the Blur TR.
Haven’t ridden the most recent Blur TR but I can almost guarantee they’ll be nothing alike.
Awesome reviews! 5010 more of a bike than the Stumpjumper?
Hey thanks!
Not sure. Don’t know a ton about that one.
Live in Massachusetts, ride a lot trails with rocks, think 5010 could handle it?
Certainly.
Really torn between 5010 and TB.. Any thoughts?
Haven’t ridden the new TB yet so I can’t really say.
How would you compare and contrast the new 5010 and the Bronson?
Check the comments
How did the new 5010 compare to the Mojo 4 you converted to a mullet?
It’s maybe been too long since I’ve ridden that one to compare.
The only difference with a Tallboy now is the rear wheel? Same travel right?
No. This has 10mm more travel front and rear. Geo is slacker too.
Would you say it climbs closer to the Ripmo, or the Ripley?
Ripmo. Descends more like a Ripmo too.
Do you think a 6'2" dude could ride this bike in a large? I usually ride XL and was thinking a smaller bike would be more fun.
We did a video a while back on bike sizing. Go check that out. I'm 6'2" and am very happy on the XL.
@@robscott8014 thanks for your reply! Actually went with the 23 5010.
@@robscott8014 looks like the medium is supposed to come with 30mm. I’ll have to see what mine comes with.
Can you do a review about fuji rakan lt, it would be interesting
We don’t carry Fuji at the shop. Won’t be able to make it happen unfortunately.
@@bikersedge thanks for the interest!
how does it compare to the tallboy? i am coming from the old 5010 and now have the tallboy. i am curios if the new 5010 would be the sweetspot.
It’s tough to compare new SC to the older stuff right now. The suspension has changed so much with these newer versions. I think the new 5010 is plusher yet somehow more poppy than the old TB or 5010.
@@bikersedge yeah but compared to the tallboy?
Read my response closer. I compared it to the TB.
So I actually just moved to Utah and want to do this type of riding can I get away with this being my Swiss Army knife or am I limited?
I’ve ridden all my favorite trail on this bike. It doesn’t offer the confidence as a bigger bike on some of the rougher trails but it can handle most things you throw at it.
what camera you using wof recording video and what gier to hold on your body?
This one is a GoPro Hero 10 on a chesty.
Enjoy your reviews! You really liked the Norco Optic in that review. Any similarities between the new 5010 and the Optic? I'd guess they are in the same class being on the aggressive side of trail bikes. Thanks.
Hey thanks! Yeah I'd say they're similar. It's been too long since I've ridden the Optic, but from memory I'd have to say they're similar.
Why would I want less travel with 5010 than the other SC mix wheels?
Short travel bikes have a different ride quality. They offer things that the big bikes can’t.
Interested that you are on an XL. How tall are you? I'm currently on a 5010 V4 in large at 6"1.
I’m 6’2”. Pretty much always ride XL.
@@bikersedge I'm probably going to move to the XL for the V5
So … what does this mean for the tallboy ?
Not sure. One can only hope…
how tall are you and are riding an XL i want to get one but i am in the middle of a large and a XL
I’m 6’2”
Where in park city do you ride?
Mostly on the PCMR side
What about having a 150mm 36 on it
@@DarrenSmith-x6h I guess you could. At that point are you better off on a Bronson?
@@bikersedge no this combo is not in the same ballpark as bronson ,it's only 10mm different and 34 s are a little undergunned for aggressive riding if you ask me a 150, 36 keeps this bikes intended use with a little more muscle
Just thinking that if you want to get aggressive with the riding, a Bronson might be better suited. Even with more fork up front, you're going to run into the rear struggling to hang. To each their own I guess.
Which version is this? V4? V5?
V5
What trail are you riding??
A handful of trails at Alta.
This verses giant trance x 29er????
They don’t feel very similar at all. This is way more plush and playful at the same time. The Trance climbs better.
5010 vs bronson?
Still haven’t ridden a Bronson. Can’t really say.
It’s the SOLO…
I didn’t want to get sued
Please talk about tires a bit. I didn’t get the double down reference ! Shredding a tire after an hour does not sound fun. Thank you. Gret review
Double down tires have thicker casings. I had an EXO casing tear open in a corner on the first ride.
@@bikersedge were you able to get another tire pretty quickly or did that end the day way to early?
I know this is unpopular as hell but my biggest turn off to mullet bikes is that they look weird
When you’re riding it you can’t even see. Ha.
Why mullet your party bike?!
Santa Cruz just completely abandoning 27.5 ... Not much differentiates their lineup, specifically the Nomad, Megatower and Bronson.
Having ridden both the old 5010 and this new one. I’m pretty stoked it’s mullet.
Would you review yt bikes?
As a bike shop, YT isn’t a brand we have access to.
4th
Ho the f buy 27 bike
Shoulda gone full 29.
That’s what the Hightower is for.
Call it MX mode or motocross mode, not mullet. Let's ditch that jargon.
I’m a 90s kid. Mullet for life!
